The Nexus S gets it’s first taste of CM9
, the ICS based AOSP ROM! ICS ports are all the rage right now, and the team at CyanogenMod went underground to work on their new CM9, thus keeping things a wee bit. Guess what? Koush, the guy who made ClockworkMod recovery and ROM Manager possible, is working on the CM9 project for the Nexus S, and he has released his build to the users for some early testing. The ROM, still in an Alpha stage, is said to be stable enough to be used as a daily driver. Apparently almost everything seems to be working just fine, and if a few bugs do exist, the ROM is in Alpha 11 of its stage, so bear with it if you do want to give it a go.
HTC EVO 4G gets Ice Cream Sandwich! Android’s latest OS to date that is all the rage these days, with fans looking forward to get ICS ROMs up and running on their devices as quickly as possible. Editing a photo can be done for many reasons. It can be for professional purposes, for sharing with family and showing off your creative skills, or even just for fun. Whether its simple cropping or adjusting contrast, you’ll need an image editor to do so, and what better if the said editor is available anywhere, as a web app! Recently, I've been playing around with a range of photo editing web apps, and I must say, I'm impressed with their capabilities. Most of these apps let you add filters, frames, create avatars, cartoons, paintings and so much more. Furthermore, you can also work on your photos by using a combinations of these amazing tools. In summary, they provide a more-than-sufficient photo editing experience for the casual photographer.
Now, it's my belief that a new contender has a hard time making space for itself in presence of well-established names and brands. With this in mind, I chose to ignore famous photo editing web apps like Picnik and Pixlr, and right after the jump is a run down of 5 of my favorite, lesser-known online image editors.
Both, the Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire came out rivaling each other and both were rooted almost a few days into their release. That said, both suffer from the same issue, that is refusal on the tablets part to allow the installation of third party keyboard apps. Earlier we covered the installation of alternate keyboards on the Kindle Fire, but the Nook Tablet has not been left behind either, thanks to XDA-Developers forum member Robertely, who has devised a method to help you get your keyboard apps up and running on the Nook Tablet. Credit also goes to yaggermr and XIndirect. Read More
There was a time when smartphones were used mainly by people associated with business, primarily on account of the assistance that these little gadgets provided in the form of finance-related apps. Although times have changed, and smartphones have started to spread to the masses (especially since Android came into being), a large contingent of users still pay special attention to apps pertaining to stock prices and stock exchange in general. Despite Windows Phone 7 being a rather-new platform, we already have an impressive collection of stock market apps for it. IntelliStocks
is a nice addition to the Marketplace’s financial arsenal, and brings a ton of new and welcome features to WP7. Head past the break to find out all about this new and useful app.

So who knew installing something as minor as a third party keyboard app from the Android Market would leave you in despair, and not work at all on the Kindle Fire. Things seemed to be going just fine for the dual-core powered tablet, but users hit a road block when they realized .that just because they got the Android Market working after root, does not mean the keyboard apps will work as well. Lucky for Kindle Fire users, XDA-Developers forum member vtluu figured out a way around this issue, letting you install an alternate keyboard. However, the method involved isn’t exactly a walk in the park. Read More
Try looking for navigation apps for Windows Phone 7 in the Marketplace, and you will find a bunch of those there. One caveat, however, is that almost all of them are focused on assisting WP7 users while driving a car, but as we all know, automobiles are not the only mode of transportation used commonly; in fact, far from it. What if you are a cyclist and like to take your two wheels up the hills, or to the mall? Now, there is an app which will help you in that, too. Using Cycle Assistant,
you can not only see where you are going with the help of the app’s compass and map, but also keep track of your previous rides and the routes you took.
When creating an application, it is important for developers to know how much time it takes to load up once the user clicks its executable file. Imagine if you are trying out a new application, and when you run it, it takes ages to load. Most probably you will not use the application again, right? There are plenty of alternatives available for each type of software and if you want people to use your tool, you should make sure that everything is running smoothly. AppTimer
is an application start up time bench marking tool that lets you run an executable file a pre-specified number of times, and check how long it takes for the application to be ready for use after execution. The application logs the start up times to a log file after each execution of the application. It comes in handy if you are trying to compare the performance of one software on different hardware, or multiple software on a single hardware.
When configuring an MS Exchange or other mail server account for MS Outlook, one often requires importing PST files (provided the user was not using an OST file). This occurs when a user switches to a new system, or after a fresh wipe and load Windows installation. Normally, a PST file can be added or removed in MS Outloook 2010 from File –> Account Settings –> Data Files. SmartPST
is an easy to use application that simplifies attaching and detaching PST files from MS Outlook. It works even when MS Outlook is not running, and automatically attaches/detaches files, depending on their availability. This means that if a PST file is removed from the system, it will automatically detach it and also check for it later on. If the PST file becomes available again, the program will automatically attach it back to MS Outlook. Other features of SmartPST include drag and drop support, the option to rename PST files and more.

HTC might have raced ahead in the Windows Phone 7 device market with Titan and Radar, but on the apps front, Samsung remains the most active developer for WP7. As we said in our reviews of FunShot
and Wireless Manager
, Samsung Zone is getting updates and new apps pretty regularly these days. People had started to accuse Samsung of ignoring their first generation WP7 devices, and to counter those allegations, the developers over at Samsung have come up with Extra Settings
. This is an app that, once downloaded, will disappear from your app list and make additions to the Settings
menu. So what are the new settings brought by this app? Read on to find out. Read More
Over the years, we have seen quite a lot of utilities surface for the Android OS, with the majority of them being mobile based, and a select few, desktop based. Developed by Roman Nurik
, Android Design Preview
is a handy tool for Android, that lets you mirror a portion of your desktop screen onto your mobile device over a USB connection. While we’ve had apps in the past that let you stream your desktop onto an Android device (the likes of Teamviewer), this app's purpose is much simpler. It is actually meant for developers who want a quick way to see how their apps or themes look on their mobile devices. A beta of the tool is out, and you can check it out, provided you have Java Runtime Environment installed.
The Ice Cream Sandwich, Androids latest offering, has found it’s way onto the Motorola Defy, and the wheels have been set in motion. This comes in from XDA-Developers forum member Epsylon,
and while the ROM is a categorized as a test ROM by the developer, it is only natural that a lot of bugs do exist. However, the fact that ICS for the Defy is under development is worth getting exciting over. Read on for more on the ROM and how - if you dare to - you can get it up and running on your Motorola Defy.
A couple of months ago, we covered an Android app called AppLovin
that allowed the users to see what apps and games are currently being used by their friends. Although the said app gives you a good idea of the taste and preference of your friends in terms of Android apps, it reveals very less about the popularity of certain apps at a comparatively larger (or, if you like, at a global) scale in the Android Market. If you’re looking for an app that provides you detailed and updated information about some of the hot-running and trending apps on the Android Market in terms of ranking, number of downloads, region, price, availability or grossing, then AppRank
should catch your attention.

It is pretty surprising that the Acer Iconia A500, being such a capable Honeycomb tablet, had more potential than Acer actually made it out to be. Did you know that the Iconia tablet's camera is capable of recording videos at full HD 1080p. Well we said, capable, did not tell you it does. This is where XDA-Developers forum member m-deejay
comes in and makes all of this possible. Thanks to him, you can now easily mod the Iconia's camera and switch to recording videos at full HD resolution.
Last year, we covered Go Contact Sync,
which is an open source application for
synchronizing Google Contacts with MS Outlook, and vice versa. Since our review, this application has been updated with a few more options that allow more robust synchronization of contacts. These include synchronization of contacts (and not just deleted contacts as was the case in the older version) along with synchronization of notes and proxy setting configuration.
When downloading content from the internet, it is not unusual that you may have multiple copies of the same item in different memory locations, wasting precious storage space. Deleting the duplicate files is a lengthy and tedious process if done manually that requires you to open each file and check if another file with exactly the same contents exists anywhere else in your computer or not. However, to avoid all that work, there are tools available that check selected folders for duplicate files according to different criteria, such as file as, metadata, and resolution for images. NoDupe
is a duplicate file and folder finder that locates duplicates in your hard drives, and allows you to delete these dupes, resulting in more free space and less cluttering in your system. NoDupe can locate duplicate files, directories and music files even if they don’t share the same ID3 tags. The application allows you to search for duplicates in local as well as remote locations, select only the duplicates, and delete them all at once.
