RealVNC: Control Remote Windows, Mac & Linux Systems Through VNC

Just a few days ago, we covered OnlineVNC, a VNC solution that allows you to control a remote PC via a web browser. Today, we will look into another VNC application called RealVNC, which is quite different from OnlineVNC in terms of the way it allows users to interact with a VNC server. Both the server and client (viewer) come packed into a single setup file. Instead of using the web browser, you need the Viewer application to access the shared machine from the remote location. Moreover, RealVNC supports multiple platforms, namely Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Solaris, HP-UX and AIX, and has paid Viewer apps for Android and iOS as well. RealVNC is very powerful, and becomes quite user-friendly too once you get the hang of the VNC connection's setup process. Read on for more details. Read More

BufferZone Pro Uses Application Sandboxing To Secure Your System

Sandboxing is a highly effective way of protecting your PC from malware attacks and online threats. If you have used programs like Sandboxie or Avast’s Sandbox feature, for instance, you must have an idea what sandboxing is all about. In layman's terms, it’s a technique to safeguard your PC by putting programs in a sandbox, i.e., separating the programs from host system and put them in a virtual environment. Developed by Trustedware, BufferZone Pro is a Sandboxie-like security application that automatically puts your frequently used programs (especially those which are prone to external attacks) in a Bufferzone. It easily detects your web browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Firefox etc.) and other applications like Skype, P2P programs, Instant messengers, and launches them in the virtual environment. Just like Avast's Auto-Sandbox feature, it runs sandboxed applications in a red-bordered window. In addition, it also has the ability to create state snapshots, which help users roll back to a previous state by restoring a snapshot. Details to follow after the jump. Read More

Share Images On Facebook Directly From The Stock iOS Photos App [Cydia]

iOS 6 might not be coming to your iPhone any time soon, but the rumors of its features are certainly thick in the air. One thing that the next major update of Apple’s mobile platform is almost sure to come with, is Facebook integration. A lot of people really appreciated all the Twitter-related stuff that iOS 5 flaunted, and now everyone can't wait to see what changes will be made with respect to Facebook integration. If you have a jailbroken iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, though, you don’t have to wait too long to try out one instance of iOS-Facebook combination. With the newly released FacebookThis Cydia tweak, users can post photos to Facebook right from within the stock Photos app! The tweak adds a new button in each photo’s options, and using that button, you will be able to publish photos to your wall without much ado. Admittedly, the Facebook option offered by the FacebookThis tweak is not as smooth or efficient as it would have been in an official update, it isn't too shabby either. Read More

Instagram for Chrome: A Light, Elegant Viewer For The Photo-Sharing Giant [Extension]

iPhone is popular for a lot of reasons; it practically pioneered the design, technology and feature concepts we see in today’s smartphones, but the apps that are available for download are also a huge part of the user experience. Once insanely popular app for the iPhone is Instagram. Although it is now available for the Android platform as well, it was made popular on the iPhone. Even with the Facebook acquisition, the service has yet to have a web interface and the large database of pictures can only be accessed from your phone.  If you've been using an iPhone long enough, chances are high that you, yourself, might at some point have used Instagram, either to share your own masterpieces with the world, or to view those shared by others. Smartphone-only apps like Instagram are cool, but they end up breaking the experience when we want to check our feeds through our desktop. Imagine someone who just wants to browse through, say, Instagram's most popular feed, and doesn't want to be bothered with comments, likes, or the whole 'Instagram package', for that matter. That is where Instagram for Chrome comes in. It is a handy Chrome extension that lets you view Instagram photos and the likes and comments on them right from the Chrome toolbar. Unlike previously reviewed InstaBrowser for Chrome, this extension is lighter, better-looking and closer to the original Instagram interface. Read More

Bypass Facebook Social Reader App Install Requests To Read Articles In Peace [Chrome, Firefox]

While browsing Facebook, we often come across articles shared by our friends from apps like Yahoo!, The Gaurdian or Washington Post. You might have noticed that when these links are clicked, you get redirected to the social reader’s app install request page, which accesses your personal information and posts on your behalf, including people you liked, articles you read and more.  Not only do these apps access your private details to learn your reading habits, but can also be very annoying thanks to their wall posts. If you want to read articles from various social readers but, at the same time, don't want to authorize a third-party application to access your basic information, then Unsocialize is just what you need. This Chrome extension and Firefox add-on adds an Unsocialize option to the right-click context menu, which allows you to open articles in a new tab without getting redirected to third-party apps and having to grant them access to your information. Encode Videos Or Extract Their Audio Using Mac Finder [Tip]

The Finder in Mac is generally just a file explorer with no hardcore features that would warrant calling it anything else, but it isn’t really as bare as it seems. As far as videos are concerned, the Finder can do much more. Specifically, you can use the Finder to encode and resize videos, as well as to extract their audio. The feature, built into Mac, requires no codecs to be installed, and works only on files that Mac supports. Hence, Flash files cannot utilize this encoding, but the common MP4s can be used without needing to think twice. Read More
