PDF Toolkit: Compress PDFs, Extract Text And Images In Different Sizes [Mac]

Feature rich free PDF tools and/or editors are hard to come by. PDF is one of the most common formats for viewing image rich documents on a slew of devices and that leaves you with little choice except to pay up for a halfway decent PDF tool or use several free alternative apps instead of a single one. PDF Toolkit is a PDF editing app for Mac that normally costs $4.99 but is free this month (makes you love Summer, doesn’t it?). PDF Toolkit isn’t for editing a PDF file i.e., you cannot add or remove text and images from a file. What you can do is merge multiple PDFs into a single file. Unlike free tools that only let you merge 2 files into one, PDF Toolkit gives you the freedom to merge as many files as you want. It can extract pages from a file, either in order or as per user specifications and create a new PDF from the extracted pages. Additionally, you can extract text and images from a file and compress it on four different standards to reduce the size. Note that this compression does not mean adding it to a zipped file, compression with PDF Toolkit is different and discussed in detail below. Read More

CodecInstaller Scans Existing Codecs & Downloads Missing Ones Required By Your Media Files

Windows 7, by default, comes packed with majority of the audio/video codecs that are required to play most media files. Even if a codec is missing, you can grab various third party media players, such as Media Player Classic, KMPlayer, VLC Player and GOMPlayer, or download a codec pack to do the job. Nevertheless, due to the wide-array of media formats, chances are, you still might have an important codec missing from your PC. To cope with this caveat, you can give CodecInstaller a try. It’s a feature-rich utility that aims to help you in three simple ways – scan the existing codecs in your PC, analyze a media file to find required codecs, and/or download new codecs from within the application itself. It’s fairly easy to use, and comprises a minimalist user interface. Details to follow after the jump. Read More

PocketCloud For iOS: Mac & PC Remote Access App With VNC Support

There are more than just a few iPhone or iPad apps out there that let you remotely access and control your PC or Mac. However, most such apps are nothing more than a novelty, and it is usually pretty difficult to really do anything useful on your computer using your iOS device. The reasons for that can be manifold, like the lack of the ability to run applications on your computer and inconvenient controls. You can use it to surf the web through your computer’s web browser, or even to run applications or games. The Easy Way To Change Hidden iTunes Preferences In Mac OS X

Apps and tweaks for iTunes aren’t rare to come by. Most iTunes apps allow you to control Mac's native music player from the Menu bar, while other, more advanced ones, let you access your library and even create playlists. These apps exist because it’s often annoying to have to switch app windows to change which song is being played, and also because iTunes itself is pretty heavy on system resources. As far as tweaks for iTunes are concerned, they are mostly for hidden preferences, i.e., things iTunes can do, but in Apple’s wisdom, should not be done, or something like that. The iTunes defaults are set to disable these hidden preferences, and to get them to work, you normally have to poke around in Terminal. Change Hidden iTunes Preferences is an excellent script for iTunes that is free to download and provides a GUI for managing some common hidden preferences, like enabling half-star ratings for songs, enabling Option+click for the mini player, globally setting the song/album view for all tabs, hide ‘Ping’ (which is now near extinction anyway), and more. The script does nothing more than modify existing options in iTunes, and doesn’t install additional apps. Read More

Freegate Lets You Access Blocked Websites At Optimal Speed

Internet censorship is becoming more serious an issue every day. On a lot of forums, you can read people discussing internet censorship bills, such as PIPA and SOPA, aimed at taking away the internet freedom of users by introducing censorship, as well as anti-privacy laws. Other than this, some websites are not offered in certain regions. Same is the case with some of the videos hosted on YouTube. Sometimes, when you click a YouTube video link, you are greeted with a message that the selected video is not available in your region. Today, we have a portable anti-censorship application called Freegate, which lets you access websites blocked in your region. While most VPN applications affect the browsing speed, Freegate provides as fast a connection to websites that are not available in your country as you'd get for local domains. Moreover, if anyone tries to access a website containing adult material, Freegate detects the adult material, denies the user’s request and does not allow passage. Keep reading to find out more about Freegate. Read More

Pinstagram: Retina-Optimized Instagram Viewer For iPad With Pinterest Integration

Instagram is one of the most popular apps on iOS, and although the service released its official Android client recently, the majority of Instagram users are on iPhone and iPad. Owing to the service’s popularity, Instagram has got many third-party iOS clients in addition to the official one. Instamap For Android Lets You Browse Geotagged Instagram Photos On Google Maps

The release of the official Android client of the popular photo-editing and sharing app, Instagram, has to be lauded as a massive success. In a matter of a couple of months of its release in the Google Play Store, the app has seen an overwhelming response in terms of the number of downloads. In fact, Instagram now enjoys the status of being the best Android app from the social genre. Having said that, you can still find quite a few third-party Instagram clients for Android that focus on the features that the official app is currently lacking in. One good example of such app is Instamap that, at best, can be cited as a fine amalgamation of Google Maps and Instagram. Fresh to the Google Play Store, Instamap lets you explore geo-tagged Instagram photos on Google Maps. Using the app, you can navigate to virtually any part of the globe from where you wish to view various images shared by avid Instagram users. AVG Family Safety For WP7 Released; Censors Inappropriate Web Content & Ensures Safe Browsing

The rather strong presence of Internet Explorer as the stock browser in Windows Phone 7 has made sure that no other web browser app gains too much popularity in the Marketplace. It’s not that IE is the perfect browser for your Mango phone (it doesn’t even have private browsing), but most people are content with the convenience and efficiency it brings to WP7. AVG Family Safety is a new app (by AVG, the antivirus guys) that aims to go one step ahead of IE by offering the option to control content that can be browsed on your Windows Phone. If you are using the AVG PC suite, you can block any website on your phone (the WP7 app requires the same credentials as the PC variant), and in addition to that, the app also alerts users if there is malware on any website you visit. AVG Family Safety might be lacking some of IE’s flashiness, but it certainly does provide you with a more secure way of browsing the web. The app can be extremely useful for people whose children use their phone for surfing the net. Read on if you think AVG Family Safety can be of use to you. Read More

Typ-O: Mac OS X Text Editor With Grammar Check & Next Word Prediction

Spell check, as we’ve often said before, is a life saver in many situations, and perhaps that's why it exists universally in Mac OS X. Another equally useful feature, though not natively present in OS X, is grammar check. Normally, what you have to work with is a spell check and auto-correct feature that will correct those little typos you make, but can seriously alter the meaning of a sentence if it doesn’t predict a word correctly. Typ-O is a three-in-one Mac app with a text editor that creates and saves files in RTF format, a spelling and grammar checker, and a quick typing tool that allows you to insert a word via the function keys on your keyboard, so that you don’t have to type them out. Typ-O supports both American and UK English, and German. It adjusts its suggestions and the degree of corrections it needs to make, based on your language skills. Read More

Set Up Google Chrome Metro App In Windows 8

You may know that Windows 8 supports two types of applications - Metro Style Apps and Desktop Apps. In the Desktop mode, applications run normally as they do in Windows 7, but Metro Style apps, accessible from the Start Screen, are quite different from desktop applications. There are some apps, such as the Internet Explorer, that have the ability to run in both Metro UI and Desktop modes, depending on their launch location and default file association settings.  For instance, if you launch Internet Explore from the Desktop while it is set as the Default Browser, it will be launched as a desktop app, but if you launch it directly from the start screen, it will open  Metro Style Internet Explorer. A lot of people like to use either Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome as their default browser, instead of stock Internet Explorer. However, both Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome were only available as Desktop apps till now. Recently, The Chromium Projects team developed a new version of Google Chrome that can be run as Desktop app as well as Metro Style App. Since it is in experimental phase, you may encounter some bugs and exceptions while browsing. In this post, we will show you how to download, install and run Google Chrome as a Metro Style App in Windows 8. Read More
