Wiki Reader: Wikipedia Browser With A Filmstrip-Like Image Viewer [Mac]

Wikipedia may be cited as the number one resource for students who need to get an assignment done overnight, but unsurprisingly, it has a much larger reader base. No matter how you look at it, Wikipedia is a go-to website for most people looking for quick information. For people who need to use Wikipedia more often than others, a desktop client might be a better way to access it instead of a web browser. Wiki Reader is a free Mac app available in the Mac App Store, and is a fairly good browser for Wikipedia. It isn’t likely to help you out with research, since there are no note-taking or bookmarking features, however, it’s a good site-specific browser. Wiki Reader lets you choose which language you view the website in, i.e. which language repository, and has an excellent image viewer that allows you to view all images associated with an article in a slideshow or filmstrip of sorts. Wiki Reader supports full screen mode and maintains a compete history of the articles you’ve opened. Read More

TumbleOn Comes To iPhone; Lets You Create & View Custom Tumblr Image Streams

Tumblr might not be as popular as Twitter, but this microblogging service certainly has its fans. Tumblr is all about sharing media content quickly, and the platform does boast an enormous collection of photos related to just about any topic in the world. Although there is an official Tumblr app for iOS, and a pretty good one at that, there is still room for an app that focuses more on image viewing rather than account management. TumbleOn is just such an app. It allows you to create customized image groups even if you don’t have a Tumblr account. A large portion of the data on Tumblr is public, which is what TumbleOn aggregates. Of course, there are account management options available in the app as well, but its distinguishing feature is its personalized photo streams. Read More

Free Screenshot Capture Includes A Color Picker, Ruler, Protractor & Other Extra Tools

One type of Windows applications that intrigue me a lot are Screenshot utilities. For me as a reviewer, screenshot tools let me demonstrate each and everything to my readers, in a simple way. Back in March, Fawad compiled a list of 5 of the best screenshot utilities for Windows. It looks like we have another winner on our hands, simply labeled as Free Screenshot Capture. Aside from being a screen capturing utility, this nifty little tool comes packed with various unique options including Webcam Capture, Protractor, Color Picker, Ruler, Magnifier, Brightness adjuster and a Whiteboard. Also included is a Screen Capture with Delay option, which enables the tool to automatically trigger the capture instance after a defined amount of time. It fully supports global hotkeys, letting you easily and instantly take the screenshots. The application sits in the system tray to provide you with quick screenshot capture modes and options. Transfer Files From Mac To iPhone Over Wi-Fi Without Using iTunes

The iPhone is easily one of the best things that Apple has ever made, but there are certain things you have to accept about an iPhone. One of them is that you cannot use the iPhone as a mass storage device. You literally have a considerable amount of storage on your phone that you will have to fill with audio, video and image files. iTunes does have a file sharing option, but since you can only authorize 5 systems to sync with your phone, it is far from a universal solution. There are, however, apps available to make this file transfer easier, and if you’re a Mac user, File Storage Companion is an app that, coupled with its iOS client File Storage, lets you transfer files from your Mac to your iPhone over Wi-Fi. The Mac app is free and available in the Mac App Store, whereas the iOS counterpart costs $1.99. The iOS app isn’t just a means of transferring files, but is also a fairly good file viewer that can create directories (folders) and open zipped files. Read More

InstaTalks Is A Chat Client For Instagram Users [Android, iOS]

When it comes to mobile-only social networks, Instagram needs no introduction. The insanely-popular photo sharing network for iPhone and Android has gathered countless fans across the globe in a rather short span of time. However, it holds true for Instagram as well that nothing’s perfect, and there’s always room for improvement. Take the interaction among the service’s users, for instance. The only interaction options that you get are through comments and “loving” a picture, but that’s about it – there are no direct messages, chat or anything else of the sort. While Instagram itself seems to deem it sufficient, third party developers disagree, and that’s perhaps the reason we see InstaTalks released in the iTunes App Store. Developed by Natrobit S.r.l., the app allows you to chat with any of your Instagram followers that also use InstaTalks. You can even search for the app’s users in your vicinity and connect with them on the go. Update: InstaTalks is now available for Android. We've added a link to its Play Store page at the end of the article. Read More

Schedule System Tasks & Launching Of Applications With Z-Cron

Better resource management requires automation for efficient scheduling and execution in order to save time, which itself is a limited resource. If you could schedule important tasks of your system, you could save both energy and usage. For example, instructing your computer to automatically shutdown or wake up according to the specified time, would result in conservation of energy. Z-Cron (similar to Unix Cron) supports a wide range of programs with an extensive function library. Parameter-based starting/stopping of applications, auto-saving of websites, copying/deletion of files, archiving, compressing and auto-backup are some of the features that make it unique from the other tools available out there. You can specify when to start or stop any specific job in light of daily, weekly, monthly scheduled startups or shutdowns. Read More

Loom: Create Mosaics Out Of Photos From Facebook, Twitter & Instagram [iPhone]

There are many web services and iOS apps that are focused on letting users generate collages and mosaics out of the photos of their choice. A few of those apps offer convenience, while others attract people due to their ease of use. Loom Photomosaic Builder is an app that takes ease of use to a whole new level. You just have to choose as many images as you like, and this iPhone app will mesh them all together to provide you with a new image. However, that’s not the best part of Loom. The app is different from all others in its genre due to the fact that you can use photos from all your social networks to create beautiful collages. In addition to that, Loom is also a pretty good tool to awe your friends by quickly sharing the mosaics you create. Read More

Explzh: An Excellent File Compression Alternative To 7Zip & WinRAR

For file archiving and data compression, WinRAR is among the most popular tools. However, WinRAR is paid. 7-zip, an open source utility, is also a handy and powerful solution, which, due to its robust compression ratio, has won many accolades. Although both WinRAR and 7-Zip don't seem to be lacking in features and functionality, you can try Explzh as well, should you need an alternate solution (I still can't figure out how to pronounce it, though). Albeit simple in design (well, that’s how most file archivers are, anyway), Explzh seems to be one of the best in the business. It supports a multitude of formats, including LHA, JAR, RAR, ZIP, ISO-9660/ISO-13346, just to name a few, and can easily extract files to target locations, including FTP support. It also includes an integrated file splitter to easily split large files into your desired-sized fragments. Furthermore, it can be used to compress and encrypt files using AES (Advance Encryption Standard). Additional features include tabbed windows, thumbnail view of archived files, search for in-archive content, file editing within the archives, OLE2 drag & drop support, incremental search, AutoComplete, Batch compression, and much more. Kaliki For Nokia WP Devices Brings Audio News From Various Sources

News apps are nothing new for Windows Phone 7, and there is even a category for news + weather in the Marketplace. The profusion of news apps for Mango means that there needs to be something really special about an app to make it a favorite among WP7 users. Kaliki is a new Lumia-exclusive app that is not a conventional news aggregator, although it might look like one on the surface. Kaliki has categories for all news items that might interest an average user, but instead of providing you with written news articles, the app features professionally recorded audio clips for all news stories. This can be really helpful if you are driving (or doing something else) and just want to listen to all the best news items and articles. Read More

Open Any URL In Chrome For iPhone & iPad Through iOS Action Menu

Chrome for iPhone and iPad took the Apple fanboys with a storm, and the speed with which it reached the top free app slot on Apple’s mobile platform is a testament to the popularity of Google’s most-popular web browser. Then, it wasn’t just Chrome that made its way into iTunes App Store and then to millions of iPhones, iPod touches and iPads worldwide; a lot of Cydia tweaks and hacks for the mobile browser sprouted in the very week of its release. Just a few days back, we covered Jon Abrams JavaScript-based bookmark for opening any Mobile Safari link in Chrome, and then did a compilation of some of the most useful Cydia tweaks for Chrome on iPhone/iPad, catering to our jailbroken users, and featuring the likes of immensely-useful BrowserChooser and Chromizer. A new contender in town in this regard is Chrome for Action Menu. Courtesy of r_plus, the package essentially adds a ‘send to Chrome’ shortcut to iOS’ action menu, letting you view any link in Google’s browser rather than Apple’s own offering. Read More

Managing PDFs have become an essential in creating, reviewing and collaborating academic work. GDuplicateFinder: Search For Duplicate Files Based On Auto-Generated Hash Values

With fast internet speeds and large hard drive spaces, it is very common for people to have multiple copies of a single file in their hard drive. For instance, it can happen that you download a song in one folder, and after some time, you forget about the previous copy and download it again into another folder. This will cause you to have two copies of the same file. Even if you have a lot of free disk space, more than one copy of the same file is a waste of storage. Same is the case with images; you can have the same image with different names in a folder, or with the same name in different locations. This duplication of files eats up disk space, along with cluttering up the system. Whenever you come across such files, you can delete them manually; however, performing a complete sweep of the hard drive to look for all the duplicate files is sure to be a tedious and time consuming task for anyone. Previously, we have covered a lot of applications, such as Anti-Twin, a portable application to search for duplicate files, and CloneSpy, a tool that scans for files with same names and data. Today, we bring to you GDuplicateFinder, an open source application that looks for duplicate files and generates their hash value for verifying if the files match. Read More

Cloudpipes: Set Up Automated Data Transfer Between Dropbox & Android

There is no denying the fact that cloud computing has truly taken the technology world by storm. However, despite the emergence of umpteen number of nascent cloud storage services, the popularity of Dropbox hasn’t seen a significant dip. In fact, even the inception of Google Drive hasn’t affected the user base of Dropbox a great deal. Just like the service itself, the companion Android app of Dropbox has also been constantly improving on quality as well as the set of features with every subsequent update that it receives. That said, there are certain key areas where the service’s official Android client can still improve, and this is what encourages third-party developers to come up with their own solutions. The latest to join the list of some very promising unofficial Dropbox clients for Android is Cloudpipes (beta). Apart from letting you remotely access your cloud content, the app brings forth the concept of scheduled data transfer to the table, so that you may automate uploading/downloading any type of content from your Android to Dropbox, and vice versa. MultiStorey: Get Enhanced Music Controls & An Extra Row In iOS App Switcher Tray

About a month ago, we covered a Cydia tweak named Switchy that adds an extra row of icons to the App Switcher tray. Although the functionality offered by Switchy was really useful for almost everyone, many shied away because it was a paid tweak. MultiStorey is a new tweak for jailbroken iOS devices that serves almost the same purpose as Switchy, but without some of the more fancy features and the price tag! This free tweak doubles the App Switcher tray’s height, thereby letting you see 8 icons in a single view (make that 12 for the iPad). Not only that, MultiStorey makes the App Switcher music controls much more convenient for users, and adds the volume slider to the same screen as other music options. Read More

Stoffi: Minimalist Music Player With A Windows Explorer-Like Interface

Music players come and go, but only a few ones actually grab users' (and our) attention. One such that crossed my way is Stoffi Music Player. At first glance, it would seem just another music application boasting features that are already found on other popular media players, but oh boy, was I wrong! Three things define Stoffi’s persona; minimalistic interface, instant access to everything and ease-of-use. The application’s GUI itself is a perfect example of the developer’s fondness to Windows 7. Although open source, the application is perfectly integrated with Windows 7, where its interface is not the only thing that seems to be carved out of Windows itself, but the application makes full use of Jumplist and Taskbar for instant navigation. Stoffi not only lets you define custom hotkeys, but also, you may use hotkey profile presets from other music players, such as iTunes, MusicBee, VLC, Banshee, Foobar2000 etc, should you make a switch. There’s an iTunes like Genius feature, too, called Random playlist, which instantly generates a playlist by randomly selecting soundtracks. What’s more, the application has a system tray icon to Play, Pause and jump to Next, Previous tracks, along with visual notifications. Read More
