Velox hasn’t been in the Cydia store for even a month yet, but the tweak has made a huge impact on the jailbreak scene. Everyone expected a few add-ons to come out for Velox but nobody had the idea that in less than a month, the Cydia store would be bursting with extensions for the tweak. Velox already works with most of the stock apps but thanks to these third-party add-ons, you can now get a modified versions of your favorite Velox widgets for even the third-party apps installed on your iPhone, and make the tweak handle them.

With so many of these add-ons available in the Cydia store, it has become a bit of a nightmare to find the exact extension you want. Searching in Cydia only yields a rather confusing mix of Velox-related themes and add-ons, so we decided to compile a list to help users who want to get the most out of this awesome tweak.

AppLook for Velox

Search the App Store right from your SpringBoard. Multiple results are shown within the Velox folder, complete with each app’s developer name, version number and price. Tapping an entry takes you to the app’s dedicated App Store page.

Repo: BigBoss

UnlimTones Velox Plugin

UnlimTones offers one of the best and easiest ways of getting new ringtones for your iPhone, so it is nice to see that this Cydia app has a Velox add-on of its own. With UnlimTones Velox Plugin, users can search for their favorite ringtones right from their SpringBoard. There is also the option of managing existing ringtones, thanks to a tab dedicated to just this in the app’s Velox folder.

Repo: BigBoss

Stopwatch for Velox

The stock Clock app is among the few iOS apps that don’t get a specialized Velox folder of their own by default. That’s not much of an issue though, since you can add a working stopwatch to this app’s folder using the Stopwatch for Velox add-on. This minimal stopwatch comes with start/stop and clear buttons, along with the time display.

Repo: BigBoss

Addial

The Contacts app already has a Velox folder by default, but if you are not satisfied with just a smaller version of your address book in the folder, Addial can prove to be a good choice. This add-on adds three options to the Contacts Velox folder. You can quickly add a new contact, call a number from memory, or dial a number after searching for it in your contacts list.

Repo: ModMyi

Compass for Velox

Get a fully functional compass on your SpringBoard by swiping on the icon of the stock Compass app for iPhone.

Repo: BigBoss

Google Search for Velox

This add-on opens a Safari webpage showing results for any query entered in the Google Search app’s Velox folder.

Repo: BigBoss

Torch for Velox

Although we tested this add-on with the Flashlight app from iHandy, the developer claims that Torch for Velox is designed to work with all popular torch apps available in the App Store. The plugin adds a single control in the supported app’s Velox folder, which can then be used to toggle the camera LED. Simply swiping on the app’s icon can instantly turn the flashlight on as well.

Repo: ModMyi

Carrox

CARROT ($1.99) is a popular to-do list app known for motivating users to complete their tasks by giving them different rewards, or throwing insults at them when they get lazy. The Carrox plugin for Velox shows a list of all your pending tasks within a Velox folder. If you are a regular user of CARROT, this add-on can be a great way of using the app as a simple task manager when you don’t feel like bearing the brunt of the app’s bad attitude.

Repo: BigBoss

iTunes for Velox

A bit disappointingly, this add-on isn’t like AppLook and simply shows search results within the iTunes app once you have entered your query in its Velox folder.

Repo: BigBoss

Calculator for Velox

It is a bit strange that Velox doesn’t come with a folder of this kind by default, but Calculator for Velox remedies this situation quite comprehensively. The add-on clearly demonstrates the usefulness of having a basic calculator on the SpringBoard.

Repo: ModMyi

Vexplosm

If you are a fan of Cyanide & Happiness comics, Vexplosm is a must-have for you. The plugin works with both the paid and lite versions of the official C & H app, showing the latest comic published on the site. Now let’s wait for someone to come up with a similar add-on for 9GAG.

Repo: BigBoss

All the add-ons discussed above are available in the Cydia store for free, so you don’t have to make any additional investment after purchasing Velox itself. Apart from these plugins, there are some Cydia tweaks out there that are either inspired by Velox (like FolderSwipe), or complement it in some way (IconFlip, which tilts the app icon whenever you are viewing a Velox folder, as can be seen in some of the entries of our list).

Which one of these is your favorite Velox add-on? Or did we miss it? Don’t forget to let us know in the comments section below.

With the news of Yahoo’s acquisition of Tumblr still no more than a few hours old, everyone was a little surprised to see the service’s iOS and web versions getting significant updates. Almost certainly though, the updates don’t have anything to do with the acquisition because the new features don’t deal with any additional Yahoo! integration, and the service keeps getting updates pretty regularly anyway. The focus in both the updates seems to be on enhancing the user experience and offering a better interface. This doesn’t mean, however, that the main Tumblr UI has been overhauled. The changes have mostly occurred in the options that deal with posting new content to Tumblr blogs. On the web, you get a much cleaner ‘compose’ box for text posts, and a photo upload dialog that support drag-and-drop. For iPhone users, the app might appear unchanged at first glance, but when you try to compose a new post, a revamped selection list for post types shows up.

Tumblr For Web

In the service’s web version, the main UI has not changed a great deal, but the posting options have been freshened up. Hit the ‘Text’ button from the top bar, and you’ll see the new composition screen. Some of the buttons that were previously available on this screen have been taken away, but this makes the view a lot more simplified and easy to use. The compose box is pretty compact, and looks somewhat inspired by Tumblr’s mobile version.

When it comes to posting photos to your blog, the upload screen looks quite efficient now. You can post up to ten photos at a time, with support for both drag-and-drop and manual selection. Tumblr displays all the selected photos in a neat grid before you hit the ‘Publish’ button.

If you are still getting the old composing options on your Tumblr account, be patient; the changes are to be rolled out gradually to all users.

Tumblr For iOS

Tumblr’s official iOS app has received a couple of changes, the less eye-catching of the two being the newly added app attribution for posts. This means users can now check the source of a particular post or reblog. This might not be useful for everyone but for people with high-traffic blogs, the new feature can prove to be a big step towards making the Tumblr experience more complete on iOS.

The other change is the new ‘type selection’ list that pops up whenever you hit the compose icon. A lot of people have compared this list to different menus displayed by Path, though the Tumblr list is certainly more colorful.

Tumblr for iOS a free and universal app that you can download from the link provided below. Yahoo! might soon decide to add some features of its own to Tumblr, so watch out for even bigger updates for the blogging network in the near future.

Apps like Metrogram and InstaCam were the only way for Windows Phone users to get a taste of Instagram on their devices, until recently. While both these apps look great and have some nice features, they can never be true alternatives to an official Instagram client, since you cannot upload photos to your account using them. In a bid to get the official Instagram app on WP8, Nokia even came out with the #2InstaWithLove campaign, but that hasn’t done much good so far. Things took a turn for the better recently though, when Instagraph was released. The app was the first for WP8 to offer the ability to upload photos to Instagram. People might have been content with it, but competition makes everything better, so it is good to see that another app with support for uploads has appeared in the WP Store. Itsdagram has a really neat interface, which resembles Instagram’s UI on other platforms. The app offers a variety of filters and account management options, and unlike Instagraph, has a free trial version.

Despite the fact that the Itsdagram welcome screen asks users to sign in with their Itsdagram account, you just have to enter your Instagram credentials to get started. The ‘Home’ section of the app displays an endless feed of updates from people you follow. You can like or leave comments on each post without having to navigate away from the main page, just like Instagram. Swiping to the right brings up the ‘Popular’ grid, and the section next to it displays the activity notifications related to your account.

Itsdagram supports notifications, but they might reach you with a delay of up to 30 minutes. In order to activate live tiles and notifications, you have to head to the app’s settings and enable ‘Background Updates’.

When it comes to uploads, which is the main feature of Itsdagram, you can only post one photo to test thing out, if you are using the app’s trial version. The filters available in the app are a bit different from the ones that come with Instagram, at least in terms of names. Each filter can be previewed by tapping it once, and the photo isn’t really altered until you hit the ‘next’ button, just the way it is in Instagram’s official apps. The upload screen allows users to add a description and mentions to the photo.

Itsdagram fetches for $1.49, but the trial version can be used indefinitely if you don’t intend to upload photos. WP8 has other Instagram clients, but there can be no doubting that Itsdagram resembles the official app most closely. Give the app a go by heading to link provided below.

Anyone who takes security seriously, or has had a mobile phone snatched from them in the past, might already be using apps like Prey on their smartphone. Prey is arguably the most popular anti-theft solution available on iOS and Android but if you own a jailbroken iDevice, there are also some less feature-rich yet effective alternatives to the Prey app out there. ICaughtU might not track your stolen device for you, but it can be used to get a photo of the thief. There is certainly a lot of potential in Cydia apps when it comes to countering phone theft, and inner demonstrates that quite clearly. This app has a ton of features, which make sure that every base is covered in case your phone gets stolen. inner can spring into action automatically when an unauthorized SIM is placed in the device, and also allows you to send commands to your phone remotely using the app’s desktop companion.

Although it is not possible to sign up for a new inner account from within the iPhone app, the rest of the configuration must take place on the device. First of all, enable inner using the toggle at the top of the options list. The options below it can be used to define your strategy for the time when your device gets lost or stolen. To give the device a heads-up in such situations, it is possible to register your SIM card with inner so that whenever an unrecognized card is detected, the device goes into theft mode. In this mode, depending upon your choices, inner is capable of tracking your phone continuously, or at regular intervals. To complete the security, users can set a password on the app, or make its icon disappear whenever foul play is detected.

So now that you have configured everything on your device, it’s time to visit inner’s website (www.inner.mobi). Creating an account is easy, and requires just your email ID and a new password. To connect your iDevice to this account, you have to enter the ‘Serial Number’ from the About section of your phone.

Users who are logged in can send a host of commands to their device, regardless of whether it has an authorized or unauthorized SIM in it. These commands deal with tracking, alerts, data and accessing different parts of the device. Some of the features include the ability to protect your personal data remotely, accessing SMS or getting texts forwarded to a new number, shooting photos of the thief at intervals of your choice and viewing call logs. Even the ‘Siren and Alert’ section is pretty thorough, letting you send a 30 second-long vibration, a siren or a text alert to your device.

inner has been around in the Cydia store for a long time, but it is now available for free. The rather long feature list might appear to be a little intimidating at first, but the app is a worthwhile download and should reside in your device as a safety precaution. Give it a go by heading to the ModMyi repo of the Cydia store.

It is a common practice among developers these days to make to-do list apps that rely heavily on gestures and color-coding. Clear kicked off this trend, but more recently we have seen similar concepts implemented in apps like Listacular. Since the whole point of using gestures in a task manager is to make it uncomplicated, these apps aren’t too heavy on features. The new myQuests though, clearly shows that it is possible for an app to be feature-rich without making things too tangled up. The app can prove to be a great tool for project management, specially when you have to work in a group, because it lets users share tasks with others, and has an elaborate commenting system of its own that can be used to stay up to speed with all the latest happenings regarding any to-do list or individual task.

To let you invite your friends for collaboration on projects, and sync the data over cloud, myQuests requires you to sign up for a new account before you can use the app. The registration can be done using email or Facebook. Once logged in, a list consisting of basic instructions regarding myQuests is shown. To create a new list, tap the arrow icon in the bottom-left corner and choose an appropriate folder from the sidebar. There are two ways of adding tasks to myQuests list. You can go for the more thorough input method by hitting the ‘+’ icon, or add a new entry by quickly swiping downwards from the top of the screen. In this quick mode, users get to enter a task’s name, category (personal, business, etc.), priority level and due date. If you want to associate a specific date or time with a task, quick mode is not for you, since it doesn’t offer that level of detail.

In the detailed input method, there are a lot of fields that can be used to make sure that each task in a project is defined completely. You can add notes to tasks, set an alarm for them, and invite other people (via email) to view or edit the current list.

myQuests offers plenty of ways to view your lists. The tasks can be viewed by priority, by due date or by category. Collaborative tasks support comments from people with viewing and editing rights. You can give your feedback on a project’s progress with commenting system, or use it to get in touch with other collaborators.

The app’s pro version ($0.99) offers support for multilevel lists, additional themes, and icon packs for categories. Everything else works perfectly in the free version of myQuests. The app is optimized for iPhone and iPod touch. Give it a go by heading to the following link, and you just might find the task manager you have always been looking for.

Just the other day, while testing the tweaks that allow users to attach long videos with their iMessage and MMS, I realized that for anyone who texts a lot, finding media files in the Messages app is a real headache. Even the search feature in the stock Messages app is limited, and only works for parts of threads that have been loaded manually. In this situation, a section maintaining a collection of all media files saved in the Messages app might have been really useful. Since no such feature exists in iOS, the Cydia store has a pretty decent solution up its sleeve. MediaExport is a Cydia app that shows photos and videos saved in all of your message threads. You can then save these files to the camera roll, or share them using the service of your choice.

MediaExport installs as a standalone app on the SpringBoard. All of the media files available in the Messages app are imported to MediaExport automatically – no manual configuration required! The app displays both received and sent files, which include photos as well as videos. On the main screen, there are options to export all the files to iFile at once, or use the ‘Multi. Sel.’ option and choose any number of files you want for exporting. This batch export is carried out after packaging the files into a ZIP archive, which can then be accessed via any SSH client of your choice.

MediaExport can be used to view each file individually within the app as well. Sharing options can be accessed using the arrow icon located in the top-right corner, while the ‘Delete’ button visible quite prominently in the viewer lets you get rid of any unwanted items. The exporting options offered by the app include SkyDrive, Dropbox, iFile, Contacts, Twitter, email and other compatible services installed on your device. Before deleting a file from MediaExport, make sure you really don’t need it, since the app permanently removes it from Messages as well.

MediaExport is ad-supported, but there’s little reason to complain about that since it’s available as a free download in the BigBoss repo of the Cydia store. If used in conjunction with tweaks like Attacher, MediaExport can prove to be super useful but even without that, the download is totally worthwhile for accessing, managing and sharing all those photos and videos from one place. The app is compatible only with iOS 6 and despite having a rather lackluster interface, works completely as advertised.

Ever since Apple started its crackdown on app discovery tools, vendors have started coming up with ingenious ways of slipping past the stringent App Store scrutiny, and pushing out apps that might help you in keeping your iPhone interesting. A few days back, we covered AppShopper Social that adds a dash of user-collaboration to app discovery. Push notifications are an important part of any app like AppShopper, but there are other tools available for different platforms that are designed to work in the background, and only alert users whenever there is something worth checking out in the app collection. For Android, Amazon App Notifier serves a similar purpose, whereas iPhone owners can now give the new Apps Notifier a shot. You just have to add your favorite apps to the Apps Notifier watch list, and then wait for any updates or price drops to come along. There’s is no need to even repeatedly come back to the app, since it is based almost completely on push notifications.

One thing that a lot of users appreciate in the apps they use is simplicity. Apps Notifier is ready to be used almost as soon as you launch it. There are no accounts to set up, and all the users have to do to get started is to add their favorite apps to the ‘Watch List’ section. Apps Notifier does not scan your device to account for apps that are already installed, so the only available route is to use the ‘Search’ tab and add apps to the list manually. This can be done by tapping the ‘+’ icon that shows up next to each entry in the search results. For now, a maximum of ten apps can be added to the watch list, but an alert claims that this capacity will be increased in a future update.

By default, all apps are configured to generate notifications whenever any of their properties change. These properties include rating, file size, languages, description, title, version and price. If you want to be a bit selective though, you can uncheck any of these entities by tapping the arrow next to the app’s name in the watch list, and choosing the ‘tracking settings’ option. Other app-specific options include ‘view in iTunes’ and ‘remove from watch list’.

Apps Notifier is a free and universal app. You can give it a go by heading to the App Store link provided below.

On the surface, Twitter’s 140 character limit might seem like a hindrance, but in reality, this feature has helped make Twitter the social networking giant that it is today. The limit helps keep tweets interesting, and makes sure that people can easily go through their timeline even if they follow a large number of profiles. Vobok is a social network for smartphones that works on the same idea of intentional limitation, but instead of written words or links, Vobok focuses on audio. The app has been designed to let users record short voice messages, and then share them with their friends and followers. Even private messages can only be sent in audio form, making the whole network voice-based. In the past, Audiolip has offered a similar functionality for desktop, while mobile users have had VoiceBo. Vobok still has its own special place in this genre though, owing to the fact that it is a no-frills app, and enjoys integration with Facebook and Twitter.

Vobok offers three sign up options, including Facebook, Twitter and email. The welcome screen also lets users associate a profile picture with their new account. One signed in, Vobok displays a list of all of your contacts who are already on the service, while letting you send an invitation to anyone who is not using the app yet. Apart from personal contacts, people who have chosen to keep their Vobok profile public can be followed by anyone as well. These friends and followed users help populate the ‘Feed’ section of the app.

The Vobok feeds display a list of all the recordings posted by your contacts. These recordings can be played in-line without leaving the feed. The title of a post, along with its associated image (if any), also show up. Swipe across a recording if you want to re-post, add it to your favorites, or post a clip of your own in reply. The reply option only works for posts from people who follow you as well.

To create a Vobok recording of your own, hit the ‘Broadcast’ button from the bottom bar. To help keep things organized, you are strongly advised to give your posts a title. Attaching an image with the recording can also looks pretty good as the post’s cover. Thanks to the two button at the bottom of the recording area, users can choose to publish their posts to other social networks as well as on Vobok. To view your past posts, head to the ‘Profile’ section of the app, where you can also get an overview of your followers and people you are following.

Vobok has been around for a few months but before its latest update, the invitation method wasn’t exactly convenient. Now, however, this free app is truly uncomplicated, letting users focus on creating recordings rather than inviting friends.

There are plenty of tools for all platforms that can be used to manage your followers on Twitter. On one hand, there are services that let you trim down the list of people you follow, while other apps raise the alarm as soon as someone tries to quietly unfollow you. As Vine is still not too old, we haven’t seen a lot of similar services for it just yet. Another contributing factor might be Vine’s iOS-exclusiveness. Thankfully though, now there is a very uncomplicated way of finding out if someone has recently unfollowed you on Vine, or if that’s just your paranoia kicking in. Followers on Vine is not a feature-rich app by any means, but it is enough to let Vine users keep track of their followers if they are conscious about keeping their Follower/Following ratio in a certain range. The app can also be used to find the people you follow who aren’t following you back on Vine, and even see a special list of your new followers.

Followers On Vine is a really simple app, but getting started with it could have been made a little easier. For now, it is not possible to connect a solely Twitter-based Vine account with Followers On Vine, and you have to add an email address to your Vine account before it can be used with the app. Doing so isn’t too difficult though, as you just have to head to the Vine app’s ‘settings’ located on your profile page, and enter an email address there. Once the address has been added, you can easily login to Followers On Vine with those credentials.

The app’s main page shows the user’s profile picture and total post count on Vine. The lists of contacts are maintained below this information, and following are the criteria based on which you can browse through your connections.

Followers: Includes the names of everyone who follows you on Vine.

New Followers: Noticed an increase in your follower count since the last time you checked Followers On Vine? Head to this section and see who your new fans are.

New Unfollowers: You can get your revenge on anyone who has recently unfollowed you by unfollowing them back.

Followers You Don’t Follow: This list can help people who like keeping things fair, and think that any new follower they get should be followed back by them as well.

Following: List of people you follow.

Users You Follow That Don’t Follow You: How dare Kate Upton not follow you back, even after you have been faithfully watching all her posts for the past two months? Head to this list to see if there are any other people you’re following who haven’t returned the favor.

Unless you turn off the ‘Tweet Prompt’ option in the app’s settings, Followers On Vine keeps displaying a tweet draft whenever you check your stats. This can be easily changed with a toggle, but there are other features of the app that are only accessible via an in-app purchase of $0.99. These features include the ability to follow and unfollow people form within Followers On Vine, and getting rid of the in-app advertisements. Everything else can be used for free in this universal iOS app.

Forget its status as the iOS management suite; iTunes is among the most popular music players on desktops. After all, not many players let you purchase songs and albums from right within them. When it comes to features, iTunes is good enough to hold its own against any competitor. The only area where it was slightly lacking was the interface, but that issue was addressed pretty efficiently in the iTunes 11 visual overhaul. The MiniPlayer was among the features that got a complete makeover in the November update, and people liked it so much that there have even been attempts to emulate MiniPlayer view on iPhone and iPod touch devices. Apparently, even the existing MiniPlayer wasn’t good enough for Apple, despite its popularity, and that is why it has been tweaked a little more in the latest iTunes update. There can be no denying the fact that MiniPlayer changes constitute a large part of the iTunes 11.0.3 change log, but there are other changes as well, including more efficient management for albums with multiple disks and and a ‘Song View’ that looks better than ever.

MiniPlayer

The UI of the player hasn’t changed a great deal on the surface, but there are a few subtle changes that are sure to improve the listening experience for iTunes users. In the album info view of the player, a volume button has been added, which brings up a slider. When it comes to control view, the change might not be perceivable immediately, but the newly added seek bar is something that a lot of people have been craving to see in the iTunes MiniPlayer for a long time. You can easily skip to any part of the song using this bar, and there is no need to switch to the full view just because you don’t like the starting part of a track.

Song View

Clicking the album art takes you to the Song View, but it is not the view you might be used to. Previously, Song View had an interface that was a bit different compared to other areas of the music player, as you can see in the screenshot above. The UI looked a bit old-fashioned, and there was no integration for the new ‘Up Next’ feature. All this has changed now though, and Song View is much neater than before.

In iTunes 11.0.3, this view has volume controls in a new place, right next to the playlist icon and the search button. This search button lets you quickly find a song from your library without having to revert to the maximized view. You can also manage the Up Next list by using the arrow located in the top-right corner.

Albums With Multiple Disks

Previously, it was not possible for iTunes to distinguish between separate albums, and music on separate disks belonging to the same album. This small yet annoying quirk has finally been addressed in the 11.0.3 update, and the music player now keeps you library much neater than it did before.

As is the case with almost any update, iTunes 11.0.3 also carries some minor bug fixes and performance improvements. You can give it a go by heading to the link provided below.

After Twitter’s introduction of photo filters of its own, one might make the case that the future of standalone photo editors for smartphones is not too bright. For now, however, there are some things that just can’t be done without the help of apps that have been designed specifically for the purpose of tweaking photos. When it comes to third-party image editing apps, Hipstamatic is not a new name in the game. We have already seen some really good photo-related apps from Hipstamatic, including the popular IncrediBooth and Hipstamatic Disposable. That hasn’t stopped the vendor from spotting room for more, and has come up with the new Hipstamatic Oggl. This app supports both real-time filters and post-capture editing. The main feature of Oggl, though, is its ability to let users combine different filters and lenses to come up with unique results. It is also possible to snap photos of your own using the exact filter combos used in any of the photos publicly shared by others.

For now, Oggl is invite-only, so you’ll have to find someone who is already using the app, or send Hipstamatic a request from within the app and wait for an invitation code (we got one within three days). Once registered, users can start looking for profiles to follow. A looking-glass icon is located in the top-right corner of the screen for this purpose. To see the app’s public galleries, hit the globe icon from the bottom bar. Posts from people you follow are available in the tab next to the global one. To view the filters and lens used for shooting any photo, simply tap it once. The right sphere shows the name of the poster, while the one on the left displays the effects added to the image. To snap a new photo using the mentioned filters, tap the left sphere and choose the ‘Shoot With This’ option. This makes it super-easy for anyone to add the same effect to their photo that they saw someone else add to theirs and really liked. It is also possible to add a combo to your ‘favorites’ in the filters collection for future use.

The camera view in Oggl is pretty good. Just like old-time cameras, the viewfinder has crosshairs and other parameters that might be actually helpful in adjusting your phone’s position before snapping a photo. The filters and lenses can be accessed from the bottom of the screen, but you don’t have to worry about them before shooting photos, as Oggl allows post-processing. Having said that, it is possible to get a preview of any filter/lens combo in the viewfinder. Photos shot using Oggl can be shared to Flickr, Twitter, Foursquare, Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr. To make things more organized, there are options for adding a location and text description to the images.

Although Oggl itself is a free download, you can gain access to a variety of filters by purchasing a quarterly ($2.99) or yearly ($9.99) subscription. Head to the following link to get your hands on the app.

The Google I/O keynote yesterday brought a lot of important announcements, but the revamped Hangouts service seems to have managed to cause the most excitement among them all so far, probably because it has already been rolled out for users all over the world. The iOS app is available in the App Store, while lot of Android users have managed to get their hands on the Hangouts update for their Google Talk app as well. Google already offered its Google Talk (also called GTalk, Google Chat and Gmail Chat) already enjoyed integration with Google+ and Gmail but compared to the Hangouts feature of Google+, it wasn’t too heavy on features. Some of you might have wondered why the plain old chat can’t become as cool as its Google+ variant. Even if you have never thought of that possibility, Google seems to have been thinking along those lines. The new Hangouts can be considered a consolidation of Google Talk and Google+ Hangouts that works on Android, iOS, Google+ and Chrome. The service offers everything from video calling to group chat, and even a huge collection of emoticons.

Hangouts For Chrome

The new Hangouts extension is available in the Chrome Web Store and once installed, it makes sure you stay in touch with your friends even when Chrome is closed. If you choose to stay logged in permanently, the extension becomes active as soon as your computer is turned on like a system tray app (with an icon there too), ensuring not a single message is ever missed.

The first thing you have to do after installing Hangouts for Chrome is to sign in to your Google account. Upon doing that, all your Google contacts show up in the main screen’s list. To begin a new chat session (or Hangout), simply begin typing a contact’s name or ID in the field at the top of the window. You can chat with a single person, or start a group hangout. The chat window itself is pretty simple, and has two main views. The buttons at the top of the screen can be used to switch between text chat and video calling. During a video call, you can invite more people to join your hangout, control the call’s volume and switch cameras. If you are simply sending text messages, you can share photos or send any of the 850 available emoticons. From the extension’s settings menu, you can configure its chat windows to always stay on top of all other windows.

The New Google+ Hangouts

Google+ has received a major overhaul today, and the new Hangouts improvements apply here as well. No matter where you are in Google+, initiating a hangout is never difficult. Simply click the green icon in the top-right corner and choose your ‘Hangout Party’. The chat windows aren’t too different from the ones that show up in Hangouts for Chrome, so basically it’s this Google+ version that has been used as a model for the other apps of the service, which makes sense since Hangouts launched as a Google+ feature in the first place.

Hangouts For iOS

Since there has never been an official Google Talk client for iOS, it is pretty big news that Hangouts has been released for iPhone and iPad as well. Although Hangouts were available as part of the Google+ app, having a standalone client that even lets you chat with your GTalk contacts has got to be welcomed by many. Not only does the iOS app let you stay in touch with your friends, but you can now swap video calls with any number of your friends as well. Group hangouts allow up to ten participants, which is more than enough for most scenarios.

Using the app isn’t too difficult, as Google has refrained from making things overly complicated. To begin a hangout, tap the ‘+’ icon from the top bar and begin choosing your correspondents. All ongoing sessions have entries of their own on the app’s main screen. These threads can be archived simply with a leftwards swipe. Your hangout archives can be accessed by tapping the gear icon located in the top bar. From the same settings screen, Hangouts users get to snooze notifications and manage received requests or blocked profiles.

Much like the Chrome and G+ versions of the service, the chat window has video and text modes. Video controls are located in the bottom bar, while you can view a thread’s options by tapping the contact icon at the top of the screen. During text chats, it is possible to share photos straight from your iPhone’s camera, or by attaching the ones that are already in your camera roll. For every thread, you can add more people, toggle notifications, or go off the record. Lastly, you can block contacts and delete or archive conversations.

Hangouts For Android

For Android, Hangouts has been rolled out as an update for the stock Talk app, and is gradually rolling out to all Android devices running 2.2 Froyo or later. The app is sure to be visible for everyone in the Google Play Store but if can’t seem to install it from there yet (it may tell you that you have the app already installed, basically referring to Google Talk), you have to wait for a while longer till you get the update notification in Play Store on your device.

There are some UI differences between the Android and iOS versions of Hangouts. On Android, the app’s settings are accessible right on the main screen, and you don’t have to go to a separate section for them. Rather than having to use the back button to go to the conversations view, users can simply swipe between the most recent chat window and the list of all active threads. Unlike the iOS app, Hangouts for Android has an emoticon button of its own, which lets you open the categorized collection of smileys from Google.

The biggest criticism that Hangouts has been facing until now is that there is no way of changing your availability status on it. So, if you like staying ‘Invisible’ until initiating a chat session, Hangouts is probably going to be a little disappointing. Also, there was a lot of speculation about Google integrating SMS support into the service, making it truly ubiquitous for all communication, but that hasn’t happened. Lastly, the chat section in Gmail still shows the old interface and hasn’t been updated to Hangouts yet, which is a significant omission since many of us use Google’s chat service in Gmail.

The Android and iOS apps are a little buggy for now, but we are sure the service will have Google’s constant attention so that it can keep getting better. You can start using the new Hangouts without downloading anything by heading to Google+, or grab them for Chrome, iOS or Android from the links provided below.
