Popular music streaming and lyrics sharing web service TuneWiki hardly needs an introduction, owing to its ever-growing list of users. The web-service has been around for quite a while for iOS and Android, and it was about time that Windows Phone 7 users joined the gang as well. Remote Dictate Allows Speech-To-Text Dictation From iPhone 4S To PC

Speech-to-text functionality is commonplace for both mobile and desktop platforms, but dictating text to your PC via your iPhone 4S was a concept unheard of until very recently, when an app by the name of Remote Dictate made its way into the App Store. This app lets you dictate text to any application running on your PC provided it is using the same Wi-Fi Connection as your iPhone 4S with has Air Mouse server running on it. Remote Dictate is ideal for those people who you have to sit in front of the PC and type for hours on end, and wish to give their hands a rest.

Remote Dictate offers a simple interface that does not require much to figure out. To start dictating any text to your PC, you will first have to connect to it by tapping the settings icon in the top-left corner of the screen, which in turn requires installing Air Mouse Server on your PC. The IP address and port displayed within the server application are to be entered in Remote Dictate’s settings menu to establish the connection. Tap on your PC’s name once the app detects it, and if a tick-mark appears next to your PC’s name, you are good to go.

The rest of Remote Dictate’s functionality is similar to regular Siri dictation. Just tap the small microphone on the keyboard to start speaking and press done when you need to take a break. The app dictates text to any application installed in your PC, provided it is added to the list of programs within Air Mouse Server. If that is not the case, you can add the required program to the server application from within Program Setup.

Zip Browser For iPhone & iPad: View The Content Of ZIP Files On The Go

More and more people are gradually beginning to conduct their businesses on the go via their iDevices, a major portion of which involves sending and receiving files of considerable size in .zip archives. ZIP browsers are, therefore, becoming a necessity. Zip Browser for iOS lets you view the contents of .zip files attached to the emails within the stock Mail client. The app provides a simple interface and allows you to share files within a ZIP archive in bulk via email.

Web Scroll Capture For iPhone: Take Full-Length Webpage Screenshots

There are quiet a few people out there whose line of work involves capturing screenshots of webpages (graphic designers, for instance). Now, there may be a lot of extensions for desktop browsers that let you capture the entire length of a webpage but the same functionality is rare for mobile platforms, which is what makes Web Scroll Capture an excellent addition to the iTunes App Store. The app lets you take screenshots of whole webpages, from top to bottom, while browsing on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

The procedure is simple. Just launch the app, tap URL to go to the webpage you want to Capture. By default, the app does not capture the entire length of a page, just the part visible at the time you tap the Capture button. You will have to tap More to enable the Scroll option to capture whole pages. Also, the browser of the app tends to crash at times, and does not support the pinch-to-zoom functionality. Captured images can be saved to Camera Roll (Photos) or sent as an Email to a friend.

The legibility of text within a captured screenshot depends on the length of the webpage. The lengthier the webpage, the more illegible will the text be. Still, it is better than having to capture multiple screenshots for a single webpage.

PDF+PDF Lite: Read & Annotate Two PDF Documents Side By Side [iPad]

There are quite a few PDF readers on the App Store, but this is the first time we’ve come across an app for iOS that lets you read and annotate multiple PDF documents simultaneously. The app is called PDF+PDF Lite and it is designed specifically for the iPad. The app is designed to relieve you of the headache of consulting and annotating books, journals and documents when the time is scarce and you have ample studying to do. With PDF+PDF Lite, you can crop pages in a PDF doc, change background color, annotate important sections and copy text from one PDF document to the other all within the app.

PDF+PDF Lite requires you to add PDF documents in the app through iTunes. The app provides you with the option to read and annotate two PDF documents side by side. You can easily change the order of their placement by drag one over the other or remove a PDF document from the reading view by dragging it over the bin in the bottom-right corner of the app’s homescreen. While reading, you can switch from double to single document view by double-tapping one of the two.

Tapping the center of the screen while reading a document brings up a circular annotating menu, which allows you to crop a section of a document, change background color, scribble on a document as well as copy and paste text from one document to the other or somewhere within the same document should the need arise.

The app offers you a rotate option in the annotating menu that lets you read a book backwards from the last page to the first. You can choose various colors to scribble on the documents along with the thickness of the pen. In case you do not like the location of an arrow or note you have scribbled, the app lets you adjust its position. You can choose a from six available background colors for a document. The crop feature of this app lets you shave off the empty space that some documents have, to have the text occupy as much space on the screen as possible.

PDF+PDF Lite has gone an extra mile in its genre. This app is not only meant for students and professionals who have to go through grueling hours of study everyday, but also for the bookish lot out there who eat, sleep and drink literature of all sorts. Music Cloud For WP7: Search, Stream & Download Songs From SoundCloud

We have all used SoundCloud at one point or another, either the web service itself, through browser extensions, or on our Android or iOS devices. Windows Phone 7 users, however, have been missing out on the fun. Not any more, though. Released this holiday season for you and your family to dance and groove on the songs showcased by the music sharing giant, Music Cloud for WP7 is a third-party SoundCloud client that lets you search for, play and download music on the go along with making playlists of your favorite songs. The app has both a free trial and a paid version, where the only difference between the two is that the free variant is ad-supported.

Music Cloud offers a run-of-the-mill interface common to most Windows Phone 7 apps of this genre. Just tap Search to look for any track from SoundCloud, and if it’s a particular favorite of yours, you can Download it, and add it to a Playlist that you have created. Whatever song you are listening to, the app adds it to a Queue - a sort of history of the songs you have played so far.

For those who do not have a particular music preference, Music Cloud offers a selection of Hot Music, which is a collection of the most popular tracks in SoundCloud. The app also supports background playing and downloading, for when you want to read a book or surf the internet while listening to a track. Similar to the Queue, there is a History option in the app which holds a record of all the tracks that you have listened to and downloaded so far.

SoundCloud has a huge following, not only as a web service, but also on iOS and Android devices. The release of an unofficial Windows Phone 7 client would be a relief to all those users who like to share their music tastes with their friends and the world. Popular project-management web service Asana needs no introduction since its list of users is growing by the day owing to the simple yet productive interface it offers. For all those who had been maintaining a track of their ongoing projects on Asana and collaborating with their colleagues on it, we have some good news; the iOS client for this web service is now available. Now you can add tasks and comments pertaining to your ongoing projects in Asana from your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to stay on top of things on the go.

Instapad Is A Good-Looking Unofficial Instagram Browser For iPad

There is no point denying that photo galleries can best be enjoyed on the iPad, especially when it comes to photos from the popular (and still iOS-exclusive)

The app requires you to log in with an Instagram account to open photos and add comments. You can sift through popular photos or the users you are following on the Instagram network, mark a photo as favorite or comment on it both from within the app’s grid and individual view of photos. If you like the work of a particular photographer, you can tap on their username to see the rest of their shared photos. Once you’re logged in, you’re username too appears at the top-right of the screen. Tap it to view all the photos that you’ve shared on Instagram so far.

While viewing individual photos, you can swipe across the screen to switch between photos. Tap the button beside the refresh icon in the top-left corner of the screen to return to the homepage.

The app’s interface looks amazing, but feels quite laggy. The transitions between certain screens are choppy, and at times, the app seems to take forever to load certain photos (we made sure the latter problem wasn’t the result of poor internet connectivity). Hypotheticals For iPhone: A Collection Of Conversation Starters

Often at dinner parties, we end up siting next to complete strangers and find ourselves struggling to make pleasant small talk, so that we can get through the evening without feeling awkward. At such times, we wish we had a small diary tucked somewhere in our pockets filled with one-liners that will spark up lively conversation with our dinner partner. Hypotheticals is an app for iOS that arms you with countless “would you rather” conversation starters, or ‘hypotheticals’ for just such occasions.

Hypotheticals divides all its one-liners into various packages (Base Pack, WTF Pack and Bonus Pack). Some of these are free while others can be purchased from within the app (e.g. Super pack).

When you tap any of these packages, the app opens a set of flash cards, each bearing a “would you rather” question that you can choose to save an Answer for or Post To Facebook by tapping Options. The flashcards can be sifted through by swiping upwards or downwards. Tapping Home takes you to the app’s homescreen from where you can choose another package.

MyTextTwister For WP7: Decorate Your Text Messages With ASCII Art

In the olden times, people used to hire calligraphers to create beautiful illustrations of text for various purposes like sending invitations, special messages, or as decorations. Nowadays, it just takes a Windows Phone 7 to create ornamental messages for your loved ones with MyTextTwister, an app that offers an interesting set of styles to decorate your text messages (SMS, emails etc), and is ideal for sending greetings to friends and family.

MyTextTwister has a straight forward interface. Just type your desired message, and choose a style for your text from under the Twisting Logic option. Once you are satisfied with your choice, you can send the text as an sms, email or share it on Facebook.

Wiz Tiles For WP7: Customize The Text, Color & Icons Of Live Tiles

It seems the trend of Live Tile customization apps for Windows Phone 7 is growing. Just recently, we covered two apps from said genre, namely Skinery (which offers custom themes for tiles of stock apps only) and Themes For WP7 (offers better theming options, but for unlocked WP7 devices only). New to the Windows Phone Marketplace, Wiz Tiles makes some nice new additions to the genre. Like Skinery, it only lets you customize the tiles for stock apps, but in addition to selecting a background image of your choice for each tile, the app lets you set custom icons, titles and text. Wiz Tiles launches to a screen filled with Live Tiles for all the stock apps such as Browser, Map, Status, Phone etc. Tap any of these Live Tiles to change their color, text, icon and background images. Once your done with customizing the tiles, you can pin them to the Start screen, save the entire theme to the app’s collection or discard it.

Wiz Tiles offers a wide variety of icons for each category that you can access by tapping icon when you are customizing a particular Live Tile. Similarly, you can pick a color of your choice for each Live Tile from a color palette. There is also the option of choosing a background picture from your Photos hub. The images you choose for a particular Live Tile get saved in the apps repository and can be accessed later from within the app to customize another Live Tile.In addition, there are many Windows Phone 7 Live Tiles Theme available on the internet that you can use with the app by entering the URL of the website where these themes are available in the Wiz Tiles Download Themes section.

There is one disadvantage of using tiles created with Wiz Tiles, though. The tiles do not point directly to the apps that they are meant to launch. That is, when you tap a custom tile created with the app, it first launches Wiz Tiles to determine the app that has to be run, displaying the Wiz Tiles splash screen each time, making you wait a couple of extra seconds.

Wiz Tiles has set the bar higher for Live Tile customization, and is certainly worth a try if you are bored of looking at the same solid color on your Start screen day after day. The app is available for free on the Windows Phone Marketplace, and can be downloaded from the link provided below.

Action Movie FX For iPhone: Add Awesome Special Effects To Your Videos

Action and sci-fi movies would be incomplete without special effects. You often find friends huddled outside cinemas discussing scenes of a movie involving exploding cars, planes, buildings; in short, pretty much everything involving an explosion. Just imagine for a minute how much fun it would be if you could film videos and add similar special effects to them (like a missile hitting your car, or a car smashing your friend) right from within your iPhone. Action Movie FX for iOS makes doing so a piece of cake. The app lets you create explosive (pun intended) videos with special effects common to action and sci-fi flicks in just a few taps. The beauty of the app is that it is extremely simple to use and the results come out looking great almost every time. On the app’s welcome screen, just tap GO to start making your very own action scene. The screen that follows displays all available special effects, out of which the app offers two for free, namely Missile Attack! and Car Smash. The rest can be purchased from within the same screen. After you have chosen a special effect for your movie, you can start recording your video. The app indicates the point within the viewfinder where the special effect will appear. For example, if you’re using the Missile Attack! effect, that point will be where the missile hits.

The app requires you to record each video with at least a 5 second duration for the chosen effect to be applied. One you have recorded the video, the app lets you adjust the time in the clip where the special effect appears. Tap OK on this screen, and the app will begin rendering the video, and once that is done, you can save the video to your Camera Roll or share it with your friends on Facebook.

As mentioned earlier, the results are very impressive. If you just want to have some fun with your friends video clips, and don’t want to empty your wallet on (or spend all that effort learning) professional video editing software (such as Adobe After Effects), Action Movie FX is the best deal you can get, with two free effects and two pairs of paid ones currently available as in-app purchases (for $0.99 each). Evernote’s Skitch Now On iPad, Lets You Edit & Annotate Photos, Maps & Webpages

Yes, we know that there is a new drawing tool almost everyday in the App Store and there is absolutely no point in downloading another one, but if you get a combination of a drawing, map and image editing/annotating tool that has been launched by none other than the productivity app giant Evernote, then you ought to give it a second thought as, previously available only for android platform, Skitch by Evernote is now available for iPad users too. With Skitch, you can capture and annotate snapshots, navigate and mark map locations, or use the iPad’s larger screen to create some elaborate sketches.

Like the Android variant of the client, Skitch for iPad too has a very straight forward interface. There are a few added features in this version of the mobile client, though. In addition to editing/annotating photos taken directly from within the app or imported from your Camera Roll, Skitch for iPad lets you snap and annotate maps and webpages.

Once you are done with editing/annotating an image, the app allows you to save it to the Camera Roll, or share it over Twitter or email.

For those of you unfamiliar with Skitch, it’s not a regular drawing app. Its map and image annotation features make it very useful in day-to-day professional use, especially for people whose line of work involves a lot of traveling. Sign Docs Electronically On The Go With Adobe Echo Sign For iPhone & iPad

More and more people are using electronic signatures in the corporate sector for secure transfer of legal documents since it is a much better alternative to sending your documents via courier or air mail, especially if you have offices or clients overseas. Also, electronic signatures are ideal for confidential fax and emails that can easily fall into the wrong hands. Popular electronic signature web service Adobe Echo Sign has has released its official mobile client for iOS devices to allow the secure sending and receiving of important legal and corporate documents from anywhere and at anytime. The app allows you to keep track of all documents that have been signed or are pending for signatures with this app and send electronically signed faxes.

The app requires you to log in with your Echo Sign account, after which it catalogs all your documents into various categories. You can upload documents to your Echo Sign library from your device or cloud services such as Dropbox or Box.

The app points out the areas where your signature is required within a document. You have the option of choosing a signature Echo sign has generated for you or swipe across the screen to make your own. Once you sign the document, the app mails it to the respective client or institution via email, and catalogs the document in the Signed documents category.

browsAR: Scan QR Codes To View Facebook Profiles In Augmented Reality [Android & iOS]

The reason QR codes are so popular with mobile device users is that they eliminate the need to go through the hassle of typing in the information contained, be it URLs or plain text. Scanning a QR code simply displays the information on a separate screen within the scanner or, in the case of an encoded URL, launches the browser. Wouldn’t it be much more convenient if you view the encoded information right over the QR code, without having to navigate to a separate page? Developed by Gravity Jack, browsAR for Android and iOS blends the concept of QR code scanning and augmented reality into what the dev team calls QAR (Quick Augmented Reality) codes. As of this writing, the app allows you to create and scan QAR codes for Facebook profiles. When you scan one of these QAR codes with the app, the associated Facebook profile information appears right within the scanner’s viewfinder, as if hovering in mid air.

The app launches to its scanner, which when set on a QAR code, reveals the Facebook profile encoded within it, along with a profile picture, last status update and the option to add as friend. The last option requires you to connect the app to your Facebook account. The app will automatically ask you for your login info when you tap Add Friend, but you can also authorize the app to use you Facebook account from within its settings menu.

Swiping left across the screen reveals a sidebar. Scroll down the options on the sidebar and tap on the help option to go through the basics of the app. From within the same screen, you can learn how to generate a QAR code for your Facebook profile. From within the webpage that the help file tells you to go to (qar.cc), you can specify what information you want your QAR code to display (Profile Picture, First Name, Last Name, Status & Relationship Status), and even order a t-shirt with the QAR code printed on it.

browsAR’s new QAR concept could be the next standard for QR code scanners. We’re hoping Facebook profiles are just the beginning, and that we’ll be seeing augmented reality Android Market and iTunes App Store download pages next.

Official MSN Autos Apps Released For Android, iOS & WP7-Using Car Lovers

If you are one of those blokes who like to visit every car showroom in the city and watch re-runs of Top Gear, scour the web for the latest updates about the automotive industry, and dream of owning a Lamborghini someday, then you are probably familiar with MSN Autos, which is considered to be the largest source of information about all kinds of cars on the internet. If the name does ring a bell with you, and you happen to own an iOS, Android or Windows Phone 7 device, then here’s some good news for you. The official app for MSN Autos is now available for all three mobile platforms. The MSN Autos client offers a comprehensive set of features, including search of new and used cars by make/model, category and favorites, slideshows of latest cars in the market, and articles/blogs pertaining to them. MSN Autos offers a run-of-the-mill user interface wherein you can search for cars either by make/model, or choose among various criterion (fuel type, horsepower, drive, fuel economy etc) offered by the app to narrow down your search. The app also offers some custom categories to help you look for cars. The recent news & videos lets you view the latest articles about what’s hot in the automotive industry.

In addition, the app offers slideshows of cars featured in an article. You can launch the slideshow by tapping any picture within the article or the see all option under recent news & videos. MSN Autos displays a thorough set of details pertaining to to each car including its specs, photos and its market competitors along with the option to mark it as favorite.

iOS comes Movie360, an app that lets you record videos with thirteen amazing real-time effects, and up to a length of two hours per clip.

The app’s interface is fluid and to-the-point. Select an effect from below and tap the record button to start shooting. The app allows you to switch to another effect in the middle of a recording. You don’t even need to pause to switch effects. Like in the stock Camera app, you can switch between front and rear cameras and toggle the camera LED (that is, if your iDevice has one).

The app has a good-looking built-in 3D browser that allows you to play and delete your recorded videos or copy them to the Camera Roll. The app can record videos in three levels of quality.The video quality is set to Low by default. To switch to High or Medium quality, tap the settings button in the top-right corner of the app. The settings screen also lets you set the app to auto-save clips to Camera Roll.

At High quality, the app records videos at a resolution of 480×360, which is much lower than the highest resolution at which certain iDevices can capture videos, but the results of the applied effects are, nevertheless, impressive.

Power Planner: Schedule Classes & Pending Assignments On The Go [WP7]

You have an important quiz due next week, but despite making many resolutions to open your books, you start studying barely a few hours before the quiz. Even though you curse yourself for not having a planner highlighting all your upcoming quizzes and due assignments, we all know that nobody has the time to make a planner on a notebook and consult it every week. If you have a smartphone, you probably won’t have to. There are countless student planners across all major platforms that make creating and following study schedules extremely easy. Power Planner for Windows Phone 7 is an excellent addition to apps of this genre. The app schedules classes and reminds you about pending homework. This app has both a free trial and a paid version, where the trial version lasts indefinitely, and has all the features of the paid version except for the option to schedule an upcoming exam. On the app’s homescreen, just tap ‘+’ to add a new class that you have signed up for. You can set the timings and location of this class along with the days when you have to attend it within the add class feature.

Once you have added information about the classes you are taking this semester, you can add homework relevant to those classes with due dates and Details for each. The app then automatically reminds you about your upcoming assignments and class schedules. Reminders for homework appear twice a day to ensure that you get it done.

From the app’s homescreen, you can start snapping photos by tapping start new camera. From within the screen that follows, you can go with the default (D-fault) camera or purchase other disposable cameras (each with a different effect) from within the app. After you’ve made your selection, the app lets you choose a sticker (skin) for your camera. As mentioned earlier, you can invite friends from Facebook who have the app on their iOS devices to capture snapshots with the same camera. The resulting album is shared between all participating users.

Each camera has a slider to set the intensity of the filter/effect that is applied to each photo. Tap the flash toggle, and the app lets out that familiar sound old camera flashlights used to make while powering up. The number of photos left in a camera (or at least the D-fault camera) is displayed in the bottom-left corner of the capturing screen.

When the camera roll runs out, the app lets you view, geotag and share all photos over Twitter or via email. Sharing can be done in bulk or individually.

Sports Tracker offers various options for tacking your workouts whether you are Walking, Running, Cycling or Skiing, and keeps a diary of your workouts over a period of time. Drive On For WP7 Provides Voice Guided Turn-By-Turn Navigation

We all get lost once in a while driving in a new place, and some of us just aren’t good at remembering directions. Other major mobile platforms have countless apps to help you navigate while driving. The same cannot be said about Windows Phone 7. Drive On is one of the few comprehensive navigational apps on the Marketplace. Not only does it provide vocal turn-by-turn navigation (like Google Maps Navigation for Android), the app lets you know about the nearest restaurants or rest stations; a handy provision for when you have been driving for hours on end.

From the app’s homescreen, you can tap the route button at the bottom to chart down your route and your mode of travelling. Drive On keeps a record of all your routes, allows you to mark routes as favorite and share them with via email. Hitting the route button allows you to choose from your Favorites or Recent routes too. Drive On will display a list of directions for you, and immediately start reading them out one by one. The blue menu that appears after you’ve picked your route can be dragged onto the screen for a detailed view of the list of directions. To have the app fetch your location, tap Coordinates.

If you tap the navigation button, it highlights your current location on the screen and displays information about it as stored in Google or Bing Maps.You can make the small compass, speedometer and zoom controls disappear from the screen by tapping the options button in the top-right corner of the screen.

If you have chosen a vehicle as your mode of transport, you get a speedometer on your screen highlighting your current speed. Tapping the small compass icon on the right of the screen displays a large compass indicating your direction from north. The search button at the bottom lets you view the nearest gas stations, restaurants, resting stations, supermarkets, pizza places etc and manually search for places of interest.

In the settings menu, you can activate/deactivate voice directions and choose from among 13 languages, opt for Bing or Google Maps, specify whether you want your screen to be locked, and more.

Microsoft Releases Official SkyDrive App For Windows Phone 7 & iOS

Almost every smartphone these days has its own cloud solution. Google has cloud services for its Android platform, while iCloud exists for iPhone users. Microsoft, however, has gone an extra mile, and has released its official SkyDrive cloud storage service app for both Windows Phone 7 and iOS. With Microsoft SkyDrive app installed on your Windows Phone/iOS device, you can view existing files in your SkyDrive account, upload photos, or create new folders on the go. SkyDrive app demarcates your personal and shared folders in your files collection view. Details after the break.

You can feel a slight difference in the user interface of the SkyDrive app for WP7 and iOS, where ease of access has an edge in the Windows Phone version over the other. Take the thumbnail view option, for instance, which can be readily accessed with a tap at the thumbnail button at the bottom menu in Windows Phone 7, whereas in iOS, you have to tap the share button at the top right to do so.

However, the scales are set even with iOS supporting video uploads to SkyDrive, something that is amiss in WP7, where only photo uploading is possible. You can delete a folder in SkyDrive by pressing an icon long enough, or swipe over it, as WP7 and iOS (respectively) natively operate. SkyDrive also lets you make any folder or file public, or share with friends through email, in both platforms.

The fact that SkyDrive is available on both iOS and Windows Phone 7 can definitely bridge some gap between these two distinct smartphone platforms, particularly for cloud sharing and storage. Views supported include a graphical chart of blood pressure, along with a tabular record, which shows details of the the time and dates you took your blood pressure on. Apart from hardcore medical data, you can also track your general fitness with Microsoft HealthVault by storing your weight/height, and the increase or decrease in it over a period of time. You can also store details of all the medication you are taking, or had been taking in the past, which can be a great help if you start suffering side effects from some pills you just started taking.
