Where voice recognition has grown fairly common in the mobile industry, especially with apps such as Google Voice and Blackberry Voice Recognition, the same still requires sophisticated software and hardware solutions to be just as effective in computers. But Fairsay, an innovative add-on for Firefox changes all this, introducing voice application control to web browsers for the first time ever.

It offers voice support for opening and closing websites, carrying out web searches and broadcasting online TV programs. Though the voice support is very limited for now, it carries potential to completely redefine web browsing in future. Just imagine how fascinating it would be to sit back and surf the internet all with the control of your voice?

As with any other voice recognition software, the developers of this extension too, emphasize on the importance of quality microphones for a great voice control experience. The developer has also revealed that the future versions will focus on extracting the voice commands from background clutter, an issue that Google has addressed to a certain degree for its handheld product, Android.

Again, the functionality of this beta version is quite limited. For now, you can navigate to 45 different websites and watch 15 TV programs (on Hulu) that reside in the default pre-programmed list. It is also capable of carrying out a Web search through commands, such as Search Google Bermuda Triangle which launches a Google search for keywords Bermuda Triangle.

Despite all odds, we find it to be an amazing development that will totally revolutionize how we surf the Internet. When it comes to voice recognition, accuracy is of utmost importance. In the developer’s own words, “Improving recognition accuracy is key area for investment for us moving forward.”

Back in April, we reviewed ScribeFire, an awesome Firefox add-on which is a fully-featured blog editor that provides a convenient solution for writing and editing blog posts as you research relevant material online. Late last month, ScribeFire launched its newest version for Firefox, called ScribeFire Next (version 1.2). The developer also released version 1.2 of this extension for both Safari and Chrome.

We saw a number of interesting features in the latest build. Thanks to the Tag Autocompletion feature, now you do not have to worry about having to enter the tags over and over. The extension saves tags used in the previous posts and offers to auto complete the tags on your new posts.

For WordPress users, the add-on also incorporated Custom fields; the auto complete feature is also included for these fields. Some bugfixes were also carried out; the category selection works just fine now. In the previous version, linebreaks were lost due to another bug, which has also been resolved.

The add-on supports quite a number of blogs, such as WordPress, Blogger, TypePad, Windows Live Spaces, Tumblr, Posterous, Xanga and many more. With all the interesting changes that we’ve seen to this extension, it will definitely prove to be all the more helpful for bloggers. It supports Firefox versions 3.6 and above. For Firefox 4, if you choose to open the add-on in a new tab, then it appears as App tab.

This will open a new window from where you can select and assign more than 35 different actions, which include assigning key combinations, running specific program or file, and a lot more. Click OK to specify a particular action.

You can also add your own programs to appear in the list of actions. To do this, click on the Configure programs button and navigate to the program you’re looking to add using the Browse link. Click OK to add the application.

In the Options tab, you can control the commands that will draw the gestures. By default, it is pressing the right mouse button and drawing the gesture. If you’ve enabled the right mouse button to drag objects, then you can click on Enable timeout so the application ignores the gesture made after the timeout. Another impressive option is the ability to disable the application when certain pre-specified programs are already running on the PC. You can access this option from the Excluded programs tab in Options menu.

A handy tool which not only adds new functionality to the use of mouse for executing commands and actions, but even goes a step further to give users a high degree of control over the actions they wish to perform through mouse gestures. iGoSyncDocs is a desktop application that lets users access, download, and upload files to Google Docs across multiple computers. Using this application, you can instantly launch an instance of Google Docs on your computer. All you need is to enter the username and password to your Google Docs account. This tool will then import all your Google Docs files to your PC, allowing you to modify them just the way you like.

To start off with, launch the Java application on your PC. You will be prompted for username/password. Enter the required information and hit Login to proceed. When you hit the Login key, the application will sync and retrieve information from your Google Docs account.

The main interface is actually a Google Docs window right on your desktop. Initially, I thought it would be a make-alike that managed to capture the Google Docs interface. But this application goes beyond that to actually offer many of the useful features of Docs too.

If you right-click on any file, you will get the option to create a new document, presentation or spreadsheet (this option is also accessible from File main menu). From the right-click context menu, you can also choose to upload files from your computer to Google Docs. If you want to download a particular file from Docs to your computer, then just right-click on it and select Download Document. Other options include Star, Hide, Rename and Share. Even the option to share the documents is also there. Just like Google Docs, you can share the document, spreadsheet or presentation that you’ve created with other users, only using this application without having to visit the website.

Wait for the file sharing window to appear. Enter email addresses of users and choose whether they should be able to read or/and write the file. If you want to edit the privileges of an existing user, then right-click on that user and select the appropriate option.

Some functions might not be fully functional, this is largely because the application is still in beta. According to the developer Windows and Linux installer version will be out soon, hopefully with the final release.

Back in July, Usman reviewed the latest version of TimeComX, a system automation tool with considerable improvement in its features and options. Today, we discovered another, arguably more viable automation program, Shutdown Timer. Though TimeComX takes on a totally new appearance and offers a much more refined UI, we believe it is totally out of Shutdown Timer’s league.

The tiny application offers an eye candy interface that is sure to please your eyes. You are presented with a well-oriented list of four different tools to help you with your automation tasks. To start off with, you can select an automation command from the dropdown menu. The menu includes Power options, such as Shutdown and Restart, System Options such as Logoff and Lock, and a Software option that includes Open Web Page.

Of the four automation methods that the program offers, you will have to select any one. The four methods include Time & Date, CPU & Memory, Networking and Processes. We will now closely look at each of the four methods to see how they can help us automate our PCs.

Click on CPU & Memory to activate automation tasks using CPU and Memory Usage stats. You can specify a command to be performed after the CPU Usage, CPU Temperature or PC Memory rises or falls beyond a pre-determined point. This option wasn’t included in TimeComX.

Use the Networking method to perform an automated task in response to a change in upload/download speed. Select your network adapter from the options list, and select Download or Upload from the options. Select if you want the task to be performed when the selected (download or upload) speed goes above or below the specified bandwidth. Enter the bandwidth range in the small box. Click Activate to enable the automation. Again, this degree of control in task automation was unheard of in other similar applications like TimeComX.

In Processes, you can specify the system process for which the automation is to be performed. You can also choose if the automation is to be enabled when the process is running/not running. Click Activate to enable this option.

The Time & Date method basically performs any of the selected actions from the dropdown list at a particular time/date. There is nothing unique about this option as you can perform the same task using Windows Task Scheduler tool as well.

To access settings, go back to main interface and click on the lower-right wheel icon. You can force the applications to shutdown if an automation task is to be performed. Check Remember the options I select in the program to avoid re-entering your settings over and over. You can also select an automation task to auto activate by checking the option and selecting the profile to run.

Under Notifications, you can choose to minimize the application to system tray. If an automation task is to be performed, you can select to be notified 30 seconds prior to its occurrence.

The portable version is also available. You will also find Windows Gadget (has to be downloaded separately) which only includes 5 actions – Shutdown, Restart, Log Off, Lock, and Suspend. Select any action and duration before hitting Do It! The list includes duration from 1 minute to 2 hours, if you want to manually enter the time, hit Manual link and enter the defined time. It is a small gadget for basic purpose only, which is to perform quick action.

Shutdown Timer supports Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7; testing was carried out on Windows 7 32-bit system.

Generally, there are three ways of getting rid of unwanted files and junk data. Of these, the two common options are to send the files to the Recycle Bin or use shift + del to remove them permanently. Password tools bundle is a free password analyzer, generator and manager. The developer has updated the ever-useful FileMenu Tools to support 64-bit OS. Now it can be used in both Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit simultaneously without having to download a separate file for each version. One interesting feature in the latest version is ‘Run with Parameters’, which adds option to run applications with Administrator privileges.

For those who missed our last review, FileMenu Tools is a freeware that lets you add advanced features to your right-click context menu. The  application sits in the Windows Explorer context menu and can be accessed by right-clicking the mouse over any file/folder. It offers a wide array of options, including Copying/Moving files, Changing File Attributes, Advanced File Search and File Delete, Shred Files, Un/register DLL and more.

In the main interface, you will see the default commands for the application. There are more than 30 different commands that are available by default. You can add any of all of them in the context menu. Let us take a look at some of these commands.

To start off with, the Command Line from Here option is used to open a command line window from the folder you have selected. Copy To and Move To commands are used to shift files to other directories. Duplicate Files creates another copy of the file in the same folder. You can shift selected files to a new sub-folder by clicking Pack to Folder. Synchronize is used to sync one folder with another. Copy UNC Path copies the path of a file to clipboard. Change Time changes the time at which selected files were created, last accessed or last written. Find and Replace replaces text for selected files/folders. Advanced Renamer is used to rename files/folders in bulk. Advanced Delete deletes the selected files. Use Delete Locked File to delete a file, even if it is locked by some other application. Shred Files is used to create files that are not recoverable through recovery tools. Register/unregister DLL is used to register/unregister files in system so other applications may use it. Use Change Icon to change icon of file/folder. Send to Mail Recipient sends the selected file/folder as an attachment.

Useful application that enhances the right-click context menu with a number of advanced options. It supports all versions of Windows; testing was carried out on Windows 7.

Desknotes is a freeware that lets you create sticky notes on your desktop. You can use it to take important messages, reminders and to-dos on your desktop. The desk notes that you create can also be configured to display a reminder when the time for a particular event lapses. Lastly, this tool also enables users to sync their notes with MS Outlook.

Initially, you’ll be required to specify a data file and an archive file where all your current and archived notes will be saved. Notes that are no longer required can be moved to archive. The archive directory enables easy searching of files using different filters, making it simpler to find the file, even when the archive gets very large.

The application saves itself to the system tray. To add a new note, right-click on the dn icon in the System Tray and click on New. You can add as many notes as you want.

To set a reminder for an important notification, just right-click on it and select Reminder. Enter the time and date for the reminder to go off. The message for which the reminder was set will be shown by a clock icon. When the specified time elapses, you will be intimated by a small system tray  message.

All desk notes for which reminders have gone off are crossed. You also have to choose an action for the missed reminders, such as Dismiss, Dismiss All, and so on.

Old and unimportant notes can be archived by right-clicking on it from the main interface and selecting Archive.

Access more options by right-clicking on the application’s icon from system tray and selecting Settings. Here, you can change the appearance of the notes as well as the archiving method. Under Advanced tab, you will find the option to play an alarm when a reminder goes off.

You can also sync your notes with Outlook by right-clicking on the system tray icon and selecting Synchronize All. This option can be useful if you want to transfer the notes to Outlook and from there, to other devices, such as cell phone.

To get started, right-click on any folder that you’d like to map to virtual drive. Click on Map virtual drive. You will then be presented with a few options to choose from.

Specify a drive letter for the new virtual drive. Also, enter a label of your choice. You can leave the Icon option unchanged. Choose from permanent or temporary mapping options. Click OK to confirm.

Now, a new virtual drive will be created which can be accessed from My Computer.

Desktop Reminder is a free task planner for Windows that offers quick options to let users manage tasks and to-dos efficiently. You can use this application to keep track of missed, urgent and future tasks. Furthermore, reminders for events can be set several weeks or months prior to the event, just to ensure that you never miss an important task anymore.

To get started, click on the New Task icon. Other options include Modify to edit a task, Remove to delete a task, and Mark as done to mark an event as completed. You can enter a search term in the Filter box to search for a particular task.

When you click on the New task icon, a new window will appear. You have to provide details about the task in this window. For instance, in the top Date field, enter the date when the event is due. You can also tip yourself as to the nature of this task. Choose the level of urgency by clicking on the appropriate option in How early the task is urgent. In the Day time field, specify whether time of day matters or not by clicking on the appropriate option. Click OK to save the task.

When a notification time is up, the application will display a popup message that will contain the description of the task. No alarm is rung to intimate the user. After the notification is given, user has three options: delete the task, edit the task and set up re-reminder after a specified time period.

The application does not minimize to the system tray, by default. You have to enable it from Options, you will also find many other settings, such as, first day of the week and database location.

Autodelete is a freeware that automates the task of deleting files and folders. You can select any folder and specify a particular time after which it is to be deleted (all files in the folder will be permanently deleted). The application will automatically delete files that are older than the specified time period. A log of all deleted activities can also be created.

The settings are categorized in three sections; the top, middle and the bottom pane. From the top settings, you can control if the application should Autostart with Windows. The option to create a log of deleted files is also found here. In the middle section, you will see the folder settings. In Folder settings, you can select as many folders and add them to the application. Then, you can specify different settings for different folders. For instance, you may be looking to delete files from Temporary Internet Folder on a daily basis, whereas you’d like to delete installer files that are a month old. You can add these folders separately and specify different settings for the both of them. You can also add filters for files that are to be deleted from the options here. To delete a particular file type or to prevent the application from deleting it, just select the appropriate option given. Then click add filter and specify file/folder type on which these actions should be applicable.

From the bottom section, you would need to choose what to do with the selected folder. You can specify the period after which the files are to be deleted. You can also choose to send files to Recycle bin or delete permanently. Another option is to move the files after the specified time period to another PC folder.

Accounts Tuner allows users to access added security settings for Windows accounts. You will not be able to change some of these settings using the build-in User Accounts in Windows.

It is a freeware application that must be installed on your system. You can launch the program, even if you do not have administrative rights; however, in this case, you can only view system information that is displayed on the application’s main interface. If, on the other hand, you logon as Administrator, you can edit all enhanced security settings for your user accounts.

Choose Local Computer or Server from the top options box. You can only access the settings on your server if your computer has joined a local network and it has an administrative account on the server. In the left window, the settings for Local Computer are shown, whereas the right window displays Server settings.

Some of the settings are only available for preview, and they can not be changed even by Administrator. The right window displays settings on the server. These include Maximal Password Age – expires the password after the specified time and offers to change it at next logon, Minimal Password Age – prevents password from being changed before the specified time in this field expires, Minimal Password Length – password can not be shorter than the number of characters in this entry, Lockout duration – time for which an account remains locked, Bad Password Timeout – prevents logon counters from increasing for a specified time interval after a failed logon attempt, thereby disabling account lockout, Lockout Duration – specifies the interval after which the locked account gets unlocked, Password History Length – prevents user from reassigning a formerly used password, and Password Expiry Warning – prompts user to change password after a specified time period. To apply any or all of the settings, click the Set button.

Google Chrome offers users the option to browse the Internet in Incognito mode. In this mode, you can browse the Internet without having to worry about your browsing history being stored. While switching to Incognito mode requires you to either use hotkey  Ctrl + Shift + N or open an Incognito window from Options menu, now you can type an address, e.g, gmail.com or twitter.com to automatically launch it in Incognito mode. The extension still needs some fixing for the domains preset to open in Incognito mode are still saved in browser cookies. These domains show up on the address bar search. So if you want to remove the domains from the cookies, you will have to go about this task manually.

RightToClick is an add-on for Firefox that allows you to right-click on any webpage that has forbidden this command. There are many such instances where administrators disable the right-click command in a bid at preventing users from copying the text or images. In such cases, the right-click command fails to execute and you are prompted with the Right-click has been disabled message. The add-on lets you right-click on any page, even those for which the right-click command is disabled.

It occupies a tiny space at the bottom right of window. You will see a golden mouse icon there. Left click on the mouse to enable the right-click command on the page you’re browsing. So every time you visit a webpage that blocks right-click selection, you should just click on the mouse icon to enable right-click context menu for that page.
