Helping small businesses scan paper to the cloud and access them easily from anywhere, anytime, OfficeDrop has finally taken another step ahead. After the iPhone and Android platform, you can now scan, search, organize and store your paper files with their newly released app on the iPad 2. This app is available on iTunes for free. It uses the camera of your iPad 2 to scan a document and store it on its server so you can browse it anytime you want. All you need to do is take a snap of your document with the rear camera in bright light and steady hands.

How it works

When you open the app, it will take you to the log in screen. You can easily register your account if you don’t have one. When you register for a new account, you get the free plan where there is a storage limit of 1 GB. Besides this plan, you can opt for single user or multi user paid plans that cost $9.99 and $44.95 respectively. I doubt that you will go for the paid plans because the captured images do not occupy that much storage space and you will also be deleting the old useless documents after sometime.

After logging in, you will then be taken to the folders tab. If you already have been using OfficeDrop web service or the iPhone app, you will be able to browse your folders there. You can also browse your files in the labels tab, if you have assigned labels to them. Apart from these, there is a favorite tab where you can view your favorite scans.

To scan a document, tap on the upload icon in the bottom-bar. There are different ways to upload documents to OfficeDrop server, i.e. either you scan a new document with your camera, upload already captured images from your photo album or you can upload from the saved files on your app. These saved files are actually using the storage of your iPad and not the cloud. This is a good option available in OfficeDrop which lets you scan and save documents even if you aren’t connected to the internet. Make sure your hands are steady and there is enough light in the surroundings while scanning a document.

When you have captured a document, the app will provide you with the option to scan more documents or save a single image. This is because OfficeDrop can link multiple scans in a single pdf file. The downside here is that you can scan a hand-written document but OfficeDrop will not recognize the contained characters. Character recognition only works for printed documents. After you have captured a document, the app will ask you to name the file, give labels and assign a folder to it. If you don’t select any folder, the scanned document will go straight to a folder named as ‘Items not in folder’. The labels are more like categories, e.g if you usually scan your electricity bills, you can assign ‘bills’ label to it. This will make it easy for you to browse through all bills at once by using the labels tab.

The recognition comes into play when we search for a word/ character from one of our scan documents. The search integrated in this app uses OfficeDrop’s paper search engine. The search engine will scan through all the documents and recognize the words or phrases that we have searched for. This is why I stated above that you should always try to scan printed documents as they are easy to search for if you don’t remember the names, folders or labels assigned to them. I scanned a document two times and saved it with two different names. The documents contained a word ‘Mac’ which I searched for. The app scanned the documents and recognized the word at two different places before showing it in search results.

Features

Already stated above, this app comes with OfficeDrop’s paper search engine which lets us search for words or phrases in our scanned documents. We can organize our documents in different folders and also tag them with related labels. OfficeDrop offers us our own personal email inbox, i.e. ‘yourusername@myofficedrop.com’. This email inbox can be used to forward and receive emails along with attachments. Unlike OfficeDrop’s web service, we cannot connect our storage account with other cloud services such as Dropbox, Evernote or Google Docs. The settings tab that we didn’t cover above needs some improvement in my opinion. There was only a logout option in that tab and we hope OfficeDrop’s new version will bring us something new and out of the box.

Turntable.fm, a recent musical start-up that already was very popular around the globe, released their iPhone app yesterday (Update: Now available for Android as well). Their previous desktop version allowed you to enjoy listening to your own favorite songs as well as the ones liked by other users. A huge amount of traffic was attracted towards the app because of its integration with Facebook i.e. before now, one could only start using the app once they had received an invitation on Facebook but now you can simply log using your Facebook account. This is an ingenius addition but it has resulted in a problem that we will discuss in detail later. You can install this app for free from the App Store and log in using your Facebook account as I told you before. A long list of rooms created by users from every corner of the world will be available on the home screen stating the number of listeners and DJs inside each room. To connect to and enter a room, you simply have to tap on its name.

Once you enter a room, a huge crowd will be there along with the DJs standing behind their counter. Every DJ has his/her scored points which can be seen by tapping on his/her head. You can also become a fan or vote for a DJ, if you have spun on the tune he/she played. The songs that are played in the room can also be voted as either ‘Lame’ or ‘Awesome’ which would help the server rate the songs and skip the ones that get rated as ‘Lame’ by many. You can also chat with other listeners in the chat room which can be reached by tapping on the conversation icon on the right of Turtable.fm logo. Apart from that, there is a share to Twitter or Facebook option available on the far right of the upper bar.

If you don’t like the songs played in the rooms created by others, Turntable.fm gives you an option to become a DJ yourself on your own dance floor. To create a room, you have to tap on the plus (+) icon while browsing through the list of rooms. The room you create can have upto 5 DJs maximum. You may choose to list the room on the server or keep it private. Once you have created a room, just tap on the ‘Play Music’ sign above the DJ counter. This will start playing songs.

Being their first effort in the iOS app store, Turntable.fm has done a good job, specially with the interface. But the popularity of the brand has attracted too many users which has slowed down the process of creating and joining a room as well as playing the songs. The cartoonish avatars are also too small in size which makes it hard to tap on their heads if you want to become a fan or vote for them. Overall, the app is worth a try specially if you missed a party for the night because you can create your own dance floor and listen to music with your friends.

Update: The app is now available on Android as well. The following link will take you to its Google Play Store page.

We have been covering some tweaks from Cydia store that help you perform actions or open apps with the help of gestures. There is now a similar Cydia tweak that iolate developed recently known as AppDialer. Android users will find it easy to play with this tweak as it works with the help of Android- esque dialer-pad and pattern-pad.

Once you have installed AppDialer from the Bigboss repo, you will find it in the settings where you can assign patterns and numbers to different actions or apps. The first option in the settings is the activation methods. This will help you select the method to activate AppDialer. There are lots of methods listed in there, such as holding the headset button for a short period of time, holding the home button, single or double press the home button and some involve swiping on the status bar. Many methods have a default action assigned to them in iPhone and thus the best method that I prefer which won’t interfere with other actions is shaking your device.

After selecting your activation method, you can set patterns and assign dial codes to specific actions or apps. The option to this is available down the list in AppDialer settings. The turning ON and OFF of WiFi and Bluetooth are on the home screen of the actions tab but you can select an action or app from the activator events. You can set as many patterns and dial numbers as you want. The only restriction is the number of actions and apps available on your device. If you want the dial-pad to appear instead of the pattern-pad, just switch off the pattern mode in the settings.

Here are some screen shots from inside the settings of AppDialer.

If you are a web-designer, the bug known as Viewpoint Scaling might have confronted you which occurs in the Apple devices i.e iPod, iPhone and iPad. Sometimes, when we rotate our Apple device from portrait to landscape orientation, the site zooms in, showing us a view having a width larger than the device-width. This is because the designer has set the viewport width to the device width. To help you get an idea how this bug works, we designed a sample page and rotated our iPad from portrait to landscape view.

A quick fix for said bug guides us to set the ‘maximum-scale=1’ in the viewport meta tag. This does fix the problem for the time being but the page is no longer zoom-able because we fix the maximum width similar to the device-width.

<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width; initial-scale=1; maximum-scale=1">

This quick fix isn’t exactly the perfect solution. Through the hard work of designers like @mathias, @cheeaun and @jdalton, we now have a javascript that can be added to the <head> section in order to get a permanent solution. Under this solution, the page will remain zoom-able.

<script type="text/javascript">
(function(doc) {
	var addEvent = 'addEventListener',
	    type = 'gesturestart',
	    qsa = 'querySelectorAll',
	    scales = [1, 1],
	    meta = qsa in doc ? doc[qsa]('meta[name=viewport]') : [];
	function fix() {
		meta.content = 'width=device-width,minimum-scale=' + scales[0] + ',maximum-scale=' + scales[1];
		doc.removeEventListener(type, fix, true);
	}
	if ((meta = meta[meta.length - 1]) &amp;&amp; addEvent in doc) {
		fix();
		scales = [.25, 1.6];
		doc[addEvent](type, fix, true);
	}
}(document));
</script>

These are the only known solutions that the designers have come up with so far. But if you have another one to fix this bug, do share it with us in the comments.

A great alternative for Safari on iPhone and one of the best browsers on Android platform, MoboTap’s Dolphin Browser, was released for iPad yesterday. Dolphin is the first gesture based browser on the iPad with some new added features compared to its iPhone’s version. You might have already read our review of Dolphin Browser for iPhone. This version for iPad is not that much changed except for some little tweaks. Along with the gesture-based browsing, this browser has a Webzine feature, which is basically a built-in elegant RSS reader. It also has a speed dial feature on the new tab/home page along with tabbed browsing. Details of the new features and changes after the break.

Tab Bar

The shortcuts that were present in the right side bar of the iPhone version have been replaced by a Tab bar in iPad version. This bar lists all the opened tabs and easily let us close as well as reload them. It also lets us open a new tab by tapping the plus (+) icon on the top. This feature can be handy in situations where we have a large number of tabs opened and it’s hard for us to tap on the cross (x) with our finger in order to close the tab. Sliding towards left still takes us to our Bookmarks bar where we can browse through our history and bookmarked URLs.

New Tab

In the iPhone version, you had to swipe left on the new tab screen to access the Webzine screen. Dolphin Browser HD has both WebZine and Speed Dial on the same page. This might be a step to cover the large empty area in the iPad compared to a small screen of an iPhone. Speed Dial lets us add our favorite sites on its line up so we can easily access them with just a tap rather than typing their long URLs in the address bar. The Webzine feature provides you with a magazine-like interface to read through your favorite websites.

Gestures

In our review of the iPhone version, we told you that the browser is very similar to Chrome in looks. The iPad version has taken it a step further by moving all the extra feature buttons towards the right of the address bar from their previous placement that was underneath the page in the iPhone version. The gesture features is, once again, a step towards minimizing the time consumed in typing a site’s URL but this feature doesn’t open a site with a Tap, instead it brings out the artist inside you to draw the gesture that you have assigned to a site in the settings. By default, you have ‘G’ for Google.com, ‘F’ for Facebook and ‘T’ for Twitter.com along with other default gestures. To give you an idea of how it works we assigned the gesture ‘A’ for AddictiveTips.com and we suggest you to do so too to make it easy for you to access our site. Just tap on the Gesture icon on the far right of the address bar which is of the shape of a hand, and draw an ‘A’ on your iPad’s screen. As soon as you lift your finger from the screen, the browser will direct you to ‘AddictiveTips.com’ or any site you have assigned to your drawn gesture.

Often in the morning when the alarm on our clock or cellphones starts beeping, we hit a button and snooze it for a while which results in us getting late for office or college. Wake N Shake is a merciless alarm clock app for iPhone that makes sure you wake up in the morning at the time you have set your alarm. Unlike an ordinary alarm clock, we cannot snooze this one by hitting a button after waking up or maybe accidentally touching it while sleeping. The only way to turn off the alarm clock is to shake your iPhone till the meter on the screen rises to the top. It requires a rigorous shake to shut down the alarm clock and when you are done with turning the alarm off, you are wide awake and ready to start the day.

When you have installed the app, you will be taken to the startup screen where it requires you to give your iPhone a shake until the meter rises to the top and if you stop in between shaking it, the meter will again come down resulting in a longer shaking time than if you hadn’t stopped shaking. After you’re done with passing the shake test, you are taken to the screen where your alarms are listed. If you don’t have any alarms listed, you can easily set the time for an alarm by going to the alarm setting menu on the top right of the ‘Alarms’ tab. While setting the alarm, you can select the day for which you are setting it or you can set it to repeat every day of the week. The app gives you a variety of choices while selecting the sound for your alarm which includes some humorous ones too. The shaking that is needed to turn off the alarm depends on the Shake Intensity. The intensity of the shaking ranges from ‘Hard’ to ‘Painful’. If you get too lazy waking up in the morning, I prefer you set your intensity on ‘Painful’.

For situations where you need some more sleep or your wake up timing has changed and you have forgotten to change the alarm time, you can use the ‘Quick Nap’ feature, which lets you easily select a predefined time, go to sleep once again and wait for the alarm to start beeping after the Quick Nap time. You can also set your own Quick Nap time by going to the custom menu. But I doubt you’ll be using this feature after going through the exercise required to turn the alarm off.

This app is pretty useful for students as well as workers who find it hard to wake up in the morning. If you’re laziness forces you to repeatedly turn your alarm clock to snooze every morning, then you’d do well to install this app on your iPhone. Check out the video below to see how the app works.

There are two different versions of the app available on the App Store, i.e., a free version which includes Ads on and a paid one that doesn’t. The paid one costs only $1.
