The touch-tablet race is gathering some much anticipated momentum and now we have Augen Gentouch 78 geared with Android.
According to a Kmart circular this weekend, the Augen Android Tablet will be available at selected Kmart outlets.
The specs of this GenTouch Android Tablet are:
- 800 MHz Telechips TCC8902 Processor
- Android 2.1 Eclair OS
- WVGA 800 x 480 Resistive Touch Screen
- 256 MB RAM
- 2GB Internal Storage
- SDHC Card Slot
The specs of this tablet are pretty mid-level but it has the potential to target geeks with thin pockets. According to Kmart, this tablet will be available for $ 149.99 after discount.
As you can see from the specs, the tablet seems to be a low-to-mid-end device. While an 800 MHz processor isn’t exactly on par with 1GHz that is fast becoming the standard now, it isn’t bad with Android 2.1 Eclair. 256 MB of RAM also seems adequate enough for most users and use cases. However, the worst part of the entire spec-sheet is the resistive screen.
This is the age of capacitive touch screens, which are finger-optimized and provide a smooth and very responsive touch experience. Resistive touch screens on the other hand, are more optimized for stylus use and don’t offer a very smooth or responsive experience. Furthermore, resistive touch screens don’t support multi-touch, so none of those awesome gestures are possible.
Another shortcoming may appear to be the rather limited 2GB internal storage, considering devices offering significantly more storage are available. However, this may easily be compensated, thanks to the SD card slot.
Apart from that, the rest of the specs seem adequate enough for a mid-end device, especially considering the price. If you don’t mind sacrificing a smooth and responsiveness user experience for a budget tablet that works well as an entry-level portable media device as well, this can be the tablet you’re looking for!
