There are multiple applications that let you download videos from different websites, and then there are software to convert them to different formats, but this process is very tiresome. If you are using Firefox, then there is a cool little add-on called MediaConverter which lets you download videos from Youtube, Blip.Tv, Break, Dailymotion, LiveVideo, Metacafe, MyVideo.de, and Veoh and then automatically converts them from within the browser to any format of your choice. This add-on is one of my top favorite, and I use it almost on daily basis.
According to the developer behind this plugin,
There are plenty other video downloaders out there but none of them is able to directly convert the video.
This is a video downloader and video converter in one simple extension. So this addon will help you to download your favourite web videos and provide it in the necessary file format for your mobile device.
One of the best thing about this add-on is its usability and ease of use. Once you have installed this add-on it will show an icon next to address bar and the Google search box as shown in the screenshot below.
As soon as you visit a website where Media Converter is able to download the video the icon will become blue otherwise it will remain grayed out.
Once you click the icon, it will show you a pop-up dialog box asking you about the format that you would like to convert your video into and also the name that you would like to give it just like its shown in the screenshot below.
Once you have selected the file type and output name click Next Step, and it will ask you to set additional options for audio and video conversions(for advanced users only). If you don’t know what to do here, you can skip this step.
Once you have made the changes click Next Step and it will automatically download and convert the video as you can see from the screenshot below.
Be patient, because the conversion will take some time. Once the process is complete, enjoy watching the video. But where does the video get saved? It downloads the video in the default directory which you have set in Firefox. To see the download location go to Tools > Options. The only drawback of this add-on is that it is slow in converting the videos, maybe the developer can utilize the add-on to use the CPU properly, so that it can convert faster in future upgrades.
There are tons of other software out there that charge you money for downloading and converting the videos, this add-on does everything for free. Enjoy!
