Yesterday, I wrote a post titled How To Add Google Docs And Google Calendar In Your Gmail Account. Today I am going to teach you ways of adding your favorite Google Gadget in your Gmail Account. The process is tricky but fairly easy.
The title of this post could be confusing for some but this is how it works,
- All Gadgets that are available for Google Desktop are given in iGoogle Content Directory.
- Almost all Google Gadgets(that end with .xml url) can be added in the left sidebar of your Gmail account.
To begin adding your favorite Google Gadget on the left sidebar of your Gmail account open your Gmail Account, navigate to Gmail Labs(It can be found by going to Settings > Labs), enable Add Any Gadget By Url as shown in the screenshot below, and finally click Save Changes.
According to it’s developers enabling this small gadget results in the following,
Adds a "Gadgets" tab to Settings, where you’ll be able to specify the URL of any gadget. This gadget will show in a box in the left column.
Now you will see a Gadgets tab before the Gmail Labs tab in Settings as shown in the screenshot below.
You will now need to enter the url of the gadget in order to add the gadget in the left sidebar of your Gmail account.
Now search for your favorite gadget in iGoogle Content Directory, after you have selected your favorite gadget, click on Share This Gadget link as shown in the screenshot below.
It will open a pop-up dialog box showing your contacts with whom you want to share this gadget, just ignore this part, on the bottom of this box you will find a link saying Or Copy And Paste A Link To This Gadget, click this link and you will be shown a full code to embed this gadget.
Remember that this is not the link we are looking for, copy and paste this full code to some text editor(Notepad, Google docs, etc) and select the url of the gadget with .xml ending only as shown in the screenshot below.
Now copy and paste this selected url in Gmail Gadgets and click Add as shown in the screenshot below.
This will now add a gadget in the left sidebar of your Gmail Account.
Note: Only those urls ending with .xml can be added to the left sidebar of your Gmail Account.
Special Thanks to Dan P and Dong C for making Add Any Gadget By Url tool. Now start adding your favorite Google Gadgets in your Gmail account.
