Wikipedia, the most popular Free Encyclopedia is
celebrating its three millionth English article published several hours ago. The 3,000,000th article is Beate Eriksen who is a Norwegian actress and film director. This landmark is achieved about two years after Wikipedia reached the two million English articles mark, though it took less than one and a half years to go from one million articles to two million before that.
One of the Wikipedia’s contributors has written a special bot to determine the exact number of articles and the bot broke through the 3 million mark. Wikipedia is delighted and shows its rejoice by putting this announcement saying “The English-language Wikipedia thanks its contributors for creating over 3,000,000 articles! (The 3,000,000th article is Beate Eriksen.).”
Some were quick to predict the collapse of Wikipedia as creation of new articles slowed in recent years as did the number of edits. These concerns were shown in a recent study by the Palo Alto Research Center.
But this recent achievements clearly show that its not happening any time sooner. Wikipedia is growing and has over 13 million articles in all languages and the German version coming close the one million mark by itself. The declining number of creation of articles may not have anything to do with the functionality, looks or its authenticity but as a matter of fact there is less to write about. With 3 million articles in English, it has become the largest encyclopedia where as Encyclopedia Britannica, the largest traditional English encyclopedia, having 120,000 articles only.
