As we have seen in the past with apps like M.dot and Weebly, creating simple websites on an iPhone is not a very difficult task. There are already many services that offer the option of managing websites from handheld devices, which makes sense since more and more people have started switching their everyday tasks to mobile devices from desktop computers. Jimdo is yet another iOS app that allows users to create websites via their iPhone. The great thing about Jimdo is that it has a decent desktop side, too, enabling users to update the site with ease both on the go and from the comfort of their home. The app creates both mobile and desktop versions of each page, which is a great feature and has the potential to save users a lot of trouble of having to do so manually.
Even before you sign up for a new Jimdo account, the service asks its users to choose a starting layout for their website. There aren’t too many templates on offer, and the app can really do with the addition of a few more designs. Once a theme has been selected, the next step is to provide the service with your email address, and the subdomain for your site. All domains created via Jimdo end in jimdo.com.
Every website created through the app comes with an example post, containing instructions regarding the usage and features of Jimdo. The pages in the app don’t have too many bells and whistles, but all the essentials are there. To add any element to a post, hit the blue ‘+’ button at the bottom of the screen. You can add headings, plain text blocks, photos, and photo galleries. To edit elements that are already there, simply tap them once or hit the button located in the top-right corner.
For photos, Jimdo offers the option of adding ones from the camera roll or snapping new ones right from within the app. It is also possible to add captions to images, or link them with other posts. The options for adding text are minimal, but enough for a simple website.
Jimdo does not have any limit on the number of posts you can create on your website. To start a new page, just head to the app’s main menu and hit the add button. Although your website is available publicly on the internet, you can also promote each post individually by using the app’s sharing options, which include Facebook, Twitter, SMS, email, and even WhatsApp.
Jimdo is a free app, and using its web version doesn’t cost anything as well. To view traffic stats though, you need to be a pro user of the service. Jimdo for iOS is a universal app, and can be found at the link below.
