There can be no denying the importance of navigation apps for smartphone users, since they let them reach their destination quickly. Having said that, there is an even more important objective that you must always remember while driving, and that is to reach your destination alive and in one piece. Drunk driving, texting while driving and falling asleep on the road are among the biggest causes of automobile accidents. Of course, being sensible is always the best precaution you can take against these problems, but technology can also help you to some extent. Meet Drive Awake, an iPhone app that scans your eyes while you are driving, and literally raises the alarm as soon as your eyes start closing. Since Drive Awake has been developed in collaboration with Café Amazon, and points you to its nearest outlet whenever you are caught napping.
To make sure Drive Awake works flawlessly when you really need it, start with calibrating the app first. This can be done by hitting the ‘Pre-Setting’ button from the main screen. During calibration, your face is scanned thoroughly, with both eyes encircled in virtual targets. To indicate the accuracy of the results, Drive Awake shows a ten-point rating on the top-right corner of the screen.
Although using the app isn’t too complicated, you can get help by reading the instructions available in the ‘How To’ section. To get started, dock your phone on your car’s dashboard right in front of your face. Now hit the ‘Activate’ or ‘Drive Awake’ button (both do the same thing) and start driving. If it is dark inside your ride, tap the ‘Night Mode’ button, which brightens the screen so that Drive Awake becomes able to scan your eyes with greater accuracy. Whenever the app detects that the driver is getting drowsy, it sounds an alarm and starts playing flashing animations on the screen. All this is followed by the display of a map, pinpointing the location of the nearest branch of Café Amazon.
It will be rash to say that you should rely solely on Drive Awake for road safety, as despite being a nice app, it has its limitations. So, stay alert on your own as well, and use Drive Awake only as a supporting tool (or just to impress some of your friends). The app is available for free, and is recommended to be used with iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. For those of you on Android, iOnRoad might be a good alternative to this app.
