Jailbreak iOS 6.1 On iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS & iPod touch 4G With Redsn0w

Apple has just released the final build of iOS 6.1 to the masses, and just like previous versions of iOS, it can easily be jailbroken, but for select devices only. Latest iterations such as the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 and the 5th generation iPod touch aren’t supported, but earlier devices which work with the famous Limera1n exploit, like iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G can be jailbroken (tethered). Head past the jump for the step-by-step guide!

iOS 6.1 doesn’t bring any major changes to the table, which is slightly disappointing, considering how Apple took so much time with it and 5 betas were released in preparation for it. New features include 36 and 23 new LTE carriers for iPhone and iPad respectively, the ability to purchase movie tickets using Siri, and the option for iTunes Match subscribers to download songs selectively to iCloud. You can read more about it in our post on the new features in iOS 6.1.

Update: The highly anticipated untethered jailbreak  tool “evasi0n” is now available for all iOS 6 and 6.1-supported devices. The method below is for tethered jailbreak. Read our guide on how to jailbreak iOS 6 & 6.1 untethered using evasi0n. The guide also covers converting tethered jailbreak to untethered.

Requirements

  • An iOS device based on Apple A4 chip or earlier. This includes: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G. Newer devices powered by A5, A6 or A6X aren’t supported.
  • iOS 6.1 installed on your device. If you haven’t updated yet (and are not currently jailbroken), just navigate to Settings > General > Software Update and tap on Download and Install. If you plan to use the upcoming untethered jailbreak, you should download the iOS 6.1 IPSW for your device from the following links and do a full restore.
    iPhone 3GS
    iPhone 4 GSM
    iPhone 4 CDMA
    iPod touch 4G
  • Download iOS 6.0 firmware for your device from one of the following links:
    iPhone 3GS
    iPhone 4 GSM
    iPhone 4 CDMA
    iPod touch 4G
  • The latest version of Redsn0w for Windows/Mac from iPhone Dev Team blog downloaded on your computer.
  • Software for unzipping compressed files. We recommend 7-zip.

Instructions

  1. Extract the contents of the Redsn0w ZIP file you downloaded using 7-zip.
  2. Launch redsn0w from inside the extracted folder. Windows users must right-click on the EXE file and run it in Administrator mode while OS X Mountain Lion users must use Ctrl+Click > Open.
    Extras Select IPSW
  3. Navigate to Extras > Select IPSW and select the iOS 6.0 IPSW file you downloaded separately. Once redsn0w picks it up, you can return back to the main menu.
  4. With that done, click on “Jailbreak” from the main menu, be sure to select the option to install Cydia and then follow on-screen instructions.

  5. Choose “Autoboot this device when it connects in DFU mode” at the end.

Booting Tethered

Now, as we mentioned before, this is a “tethered” jailbreak, which means that in the case you power off your iOS device, you will need to connect it to your computer and boot using Redsn0w. To do so, connect your powered off device to your computer via USB cable, launch Redsn0w, navigate to Extras and click “Just Boot”.
