News can prove to be a tad bland at times. Sometimes, one just need some spice and glamor, with a little bit of current affairs thrown in. That is what AOL is all about. The service offers a perfect blend of news, technology articles, showbiz stories and some pretty great humor. The best thing about AOL is its dependency on videos and visual content, rather than written items. Now, you can access all that and more on the go using the official AOL On app for iPhone, iPad and Android. The app lets you view breaking news and regular video segments from AOL, search by keyword and category and share any video clip to social media, making sure that you’re never out of touch with the latest from around the world in a way much less dry than your conventional news video app.
The main page of AOL On lists a nice mix of trending and latest videos from the network. There is a banner at the top of the homepage where all the top stories are featured. You can browse through them by swiping across the banner. Below it are some of the other trending videos, with their sources and categories listed on their thumbnails. As stated before, AOL On isn’t your run-of-the-mill app for news video highlights. You won’t find regular news categories the likes of “Business”, “Cars” or “Politics”. Instead, AOL On categorizes its videos under the labels “OMG”, “LOL” and “Geeky”.
To view videos by category, tap the menu button located in the top-left corner. Below the list of all categories displayed on this screen, you’ll find a grid of trending categories. The same menu also allows users to search for videos of interest by keyword. If you would rather browse videos based on their sources, hit the icon in the top-right corner of the app’s home screen.
The video player in AOL On is pretty decent, and comes with a sharing menu of its own, which allows you to post videos to Twitter and Facebook from within the app, or add them to your favorites.
Both the universal AOL On iOS app and Android variant are available for free.
