View Trending Stories From Facebook & Twitter With NewsWhip For iOS

A lot of iOS apps claim to be your best source for all the latest news from around the world. Most of these apps offer staff-picked new stories, meaning users have to rely on the choice of a few individuals. NewsWhip changes that by providing you with news picked by millions of people on social media. The app analyzes the social media sharing stats of news stories to present its users with articles that are hot on Facebook and Twitter. You can follow topics that are trending in any part of the globe, or browse through news based on topics. The app has the ability to retain your usage history, and offers pretty neat sharing options as well.

A great thing about the app is that you don’t have to register for any sort of account to use it, which is unusual for an app like this one. By default, the app displays stories that are trending worldwide. To view the trends from a particular area, tap the ‘Places’ button in the sidebar. Currently, news trends from following places are listed in NewsWhip:

  • U.S
  • U.K
  • Canada
  • Ireland
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • India
  • Europe
  • China
  • South Africa
  • Africa

These location filters can also be combined with various topics. NewsWhip offers topics like tech, gossip, sports and culture. Some of the topics (like Sports) have various subcategories, and thanks to these, users can customize their feeds to an even finer level.

The NewsWhip feed is endless, and the stories are sorted based on their freshness and popularity on social media. You get a basic preview of the article on the main page, usually accompanied by a relevant photo. Hit the item’s title to read it in detail. The ‘More Info’ menu lets you view detailed sharing stats of the story, and also provides options for sharing it on Facebook and Twitter yourself. Each story is assigned a score by NewsWhip, depicting the popularity it has enjoyed over Facebook and Twitter.

For reading full stories, NewsWhip has a viewer of its own that looks and feels pretty much like a web browser. You can navigate back and forth, refresh an article, or open it in Safari using the buttons provided in the bottom bar. NewsWhip also lets you keep track of the topics and stories you have viewed in the past, from the ‘My Whips’ section.

NewsWhip is a universal and free app. Despite being a fresh release in a crowded genre of the App Store, its social news ranking feature makes it stand out from the crowd. Check it out for yourself by heading to the following link.
