The recently covered rabt and Mickey Video are just two of many apps on iOS that can help you kill countless hours by browsing through videos of your interest. You can waste a lot of time looking for things to watch that are interesting, but apps like rabt can help you perform this task with minimal effort. There is some content, however, that is exclusive to certain networks, and can’t be legally found anywhere on the internet without paying. Yahoo! Screen is a new app that accumulates videos that are Yahoo! originals, or taken from shows that have a partnership with the company. You get to see clips from Saturday Night Live, The Onion, and other videos featuring some big stars. The best thing is that all these videos are available free of charge, and in good quality. The content gets updated frequently, and the way Yahoo! Screen presents them all is pretty decent, too.
Yahoo! Screen starts playing the first video that is in the ‘Popular’ section of the app as soon as you launch it, but this Auto Play feature can be disabled by hitting the menu icon in the top-left corner and then turning off the toggle at the top of the sidebar. There are no other options to speak of, as Screen seems to be one of those app that are intentionally kept free of many bells and whistles.
By swiping vertically down the screen, it is possible to browse through different categories on offer in the app. Swiping horizontally, on the other hand, allows you to take a look at all the videos that are present inside a section. Other than Popular, there are videos from SNL, Comedy Central, The Onion, NFL, MBL, Vogue, ABC News, Wired, Martha Stewart, etc. The categories present a nice mix, but a lot of them have something to do with humor.
The video player in Yahoo! Screen is pretty basic. You can pause/play videos, control their playback using the seek bar, or access the sharing options by hitting the icon located in the bottom-right corner. This button also shows a box containing additional information regarding the clip, including its source, time of publishing, and title. The sharing buttons include email, Facebook, and Twitter,
Yahoo! Screen is a nice app, and comes optimized for all iOS devices. Even on iPhone and iPod touch, it only works in landscape mode, which shouldn’t be any issue for most users. Give it a go by heading to the following link.
