Apple has finally announced the final version of iOS 5 in its Let’s Talk iPhone event today. This version has a lot of new features and will start rolling out to public on the 12th of October for all users. Don’t get too excited just yet though! Unfortunately, there is no way at the moment for anyone to grab a copy of iOS 5 final and take it for a spin on their devices just yet. However, that does not mean iOS 5 will not see the day of light before that day.
Apple release a GM version for developers that can be taken as a post-beta iOS. It is generally as close to the final release as it gets, if not an exact replica of it. There is a catch, however. This version – just like any other beta version of the iOS – is available only for developers so you’ll need to either already have a developer account with Apple, or will need to shell out $99 to register one. Once you have developer account access, you will be able to download and install the GM version of iOS 5 directly from Apple, and take it for a ride on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch right away.
iOS 5 comes with several new features, amongst which the most notable ones include:
- Siri – an intelligent voice command center
- Find My Friends
- Notification Center
- Twitter integration
- Camera updates
- Game Center updates
- Safari updates
- Mail updates
- PC-free OTA updates
So if you don’t already have a developer account but these features have already interested you enough to want to grab one to download iOS 5 GM version before the final release (and maybe even start off with development for iOS), head over to the iOS Dev Center and register to join the iOS Developer Program. Once registered, you will be able to download the GM version of iOS 5 from there. Once downloaded, you will be able to install it to your iPhone, iPad Touch or iPod through iTunes.
