There are many messenger apps in the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace, and a lot of good ones at that, but with every new release, something fresh comes to the Mango platform. GroupMe is not a new app for WP7 by any means, but it was taken off the Marketplace some time back. The good news is that it’s back, and better than ever. For those who are not familiar with GroupMe, the app lets users define groups, and then you can chat with all your contacts in those groups. If you are living in the US, the app will even let you send group text messages, increasing its usefulness. Read on to know more about GroupMe for WP7.
A bit like Facebook, GroupMe can be considered a social network. First of all, you have to sign up for a new account before you can start using the app. The signing up procedure includes the provision of your name, email ID and a new password. You will also have to specify your country and phone number in the form. All the countries in the world are listed in the app, and once you have given it your number, you will receive an SMS almost instantaneously, containing an activation code. Now, enter that code when GroupMe asks you to do so, and you are good to go. On the homepage of the app, there are many predefined groups, complete with cover photos, and you can add contacts to any of them. If you want, the app will let you start a group from scratch if you tap the Start Group tile. In the featured section, you will some of the most popular groups, pertaining to different places and events.
Whenever you want to add contacts to a group, go to the the group’s members area, and wait for the People hub contacts to load up in GroupMe. Once that has been done, you will be able to add anyone to the app’s network. If a person is not using GroupMe, or doesn’t have a WP7 device, they can chat using the web service of GroupMe. For the app’s US users, it is possible to communicate through SMS as well. Like all good messenger apps, GroupMe supports attachment of photos to your chat messages, and you can load any image from the Pictures hub.
GroupMe is a free app, and with the convenience it brings to life, you just might get addicted to it pretty soon.
