Install Android 2.3 Gingerbread Themed ROM On Droid X

Motorola Droid X users excited about Android 2.3 Gingerbread and wanting to get it on their phone ASAP? While you will have to wait for the official Android 2.3 Gingerbread release, you can grab the ApeX 1.3.0 FroYo ROM that is themed with the latest Gingerbread goodies on your Droid X. Unlike Gingerbread ROMs ported from the SDK, this one is fully functional and merely adds UI enhancements making it mimic the latest Android release.

Whenever a new version of Android is released, there is frenzy amongst the developer community to quickly port it to all their devices before the manufacturers release an official update. While this is usually done within days of the release of Android source code for the latest version to AOSP (Android Open Source Project), some devices don’t get to enjoy it due to restrictions placed by the manufacturers, and that’s the case with the Droid X as well. Due to the encrypted bootloader of the Droid X, porting Android unofficially to it that’s based on a newer version or AOSP isn’t possible, since the boot partition can’t be written and thus the kernel can’t be upgraded. That’s why for now the closest you can get to Gingerbread is using a Froyo ROM that themes all its user interface elements to look like Gingerbread.

Released yesterday by user Fabolous at Droid X Forums, ApeX 1.3.0 is based on Android 2.2.1 FroYo and has all the FroYo features fully functional. The enhancements include:

  • System-wide Gingerbread theme,
  • Gingerbread multitouch keyboard with switching script,
  • Customizable Neural Network LWP from CyanogenMod,
  • 3D gallery,
  • Latest Gapps,
  • Transparent notification shade,
  • Built-in browser ad blocking,
  • MMS app,
  • Custom window transitions,
  • Yahoo! mail and corporate sync,
  • Several customization scripts and
  • Several bug fixes, amongst others.
Please note that while this ROM attempts to bring you as close to Gingerbread as possible on Froyo, it does not contain all the changes made to the operating system itself  in Gingerbread at the core functionality level, and can not be considered a full substitute of using Gingerbread. For the complete feature list, updates, feature requests or bug reports, head over to the ROM’s thread at Droid X Forums.
