Install CyanogenMod 6.1 Android 2.2.1 Froyo On myTouch 4G

The wait is finally over – CyanogenMod 6.1 built on Android 2.2.1 FroYo is finally available for those using the myTouch 4G. It is a nightly build but seems to be pretty stable so far. If you can’t wait to try out the latest CyanogenMod on your myTouch 4G, read on after the break to find out where to grab it from and how to install it to your device.

This build brings several changes and updated features (view official changelog), and the source code is available for those who want to tinker with it or modify it for their own releases. It does not include any of the official Google applications but they can all be installed.

In case you are making a first CyanogenMod install:

  1. Download the ROM from the link given at the end of this article.
  2. Connect your phone to your computer via USB, mount the storage card and copy the downloaded ROM to the root of the SD card.
  3. Your device needs to be rooted in order to install this ROM. If you haven’t already done so, we have already featured how to root myTouch 4G.
  4. Clockwork Recovery also needs to be installed on your device. If it isn’t already installed, check our our guide on installing ClockworkMod to your myTouch4G with ROM Manager.
  5. Reboot your phone into recovery and perform a NANDROID backup. If you don’t know how, we have written a guide on how to perform and restore a NANDROID backup.
  6. Wipe your phone using the options given in recovery. For details, you can follow our guide on how to wipe your Android phone.
  7. From recovery, tap ‘apply zip from sd card’, select the ROM that you copied to the SD card earlier and follow the instructions, confirming any prompts that you get.
  8. Once the ROM has been flashed, reboot the phone when prompted and you’re done.
  9. In case you need Google apps, grab them from the link given below and install them from recovery. You will just need to copy the downloaded zip file to your SD card, boot your phone in recovery again, tap ‘apply zip from sd card’, select the zip file that you just copied to the SD card, and follow the instructions, confirming any prompts that you get.

In case you are upgrading from an earlier CyanogenMod installation:

  1. Reboot your phone in recovery and perform a NANDROID backup. If you don’t know how, we have written a guide on how to perform and restore a NANDROID backup.
  2. From recovery, tap ‘apply zip from sd card’, select the ROM that you copied to the SD card earlier and follow the instructions, confirming any prompts that you get.
