A few recently conducted online surveys reveal that Facebook is the most used Android app. While there is no denying the popularity of said social network among web and mobile users alike, it does not imply that there is no room for a new entrant. The impact of social networking on our lives is such that people nowadays prefer spending more time in the virtual world than in the real one. The growing trend of sharing your ‘life’ with the world via all these platforms is what inspires new services to emerge onto the global scene. Add to this list MindTalk – yet another attempt at providing users with a nifty little socializing medium wherein they can share their thoughts, photos, (YouTube) videos with others via various custom channels (represented byhashtags) based on topics of their interest. You can now enjoy all that on your mobile device with the official MindTalk client for Android.
Like its web interface, the UI of the mobile client too is quite neatly designed, and is fairly simple to use. To access the app’s features, you must log in with a valid MindTalk account. New to the service? You can easily and instantly sign up for a fresh account from within the app.
Once logged in, you’re taken to the app’s homescreen on which you can view the live Stream of all your and your friends’ recent activities on the network. The icons at the top of this screen provide you quick access to your MindTalk Supporters (or those whom you’re Supporting) on the network, Inbox and the Notifications. To post a fresh stream, tap on the note icon in the top-right corner of the screen. With each Stream, you can add a brief message (much like a status update) and attach a photo. You have the choice of grabbing a fresh snap or importing one from your device’s gallery.
To access the various channels on the network or to create a new one, navigate to the My option under the CHANNEL section of the app’s main menu. While on the channels screen, tap Menu > Create channel, specify the Channel Name, enter a Description, Keywords (tags), choose a Logo and tap Create.
Apart from checking activities on your own channel, you can also explore others’ channels. For each channel, you can check the total number of added members, questions, shared posts and articles. In addition, you can also check profiles of various users, join their channel, comment on, like and share posts. Apart from sharing the post on MindTalks’s own network, you have the choice of sharing them on Facebook and Twitter.
To search the network for other people or channels, you can simply tap the more/menu icon in the top-left corner of the app’s homescreen. From within the same menu, you can log out of the app and quickly jump to other segments of the app, such as your personal MindTalk profile, Stream, Whisper (personal messages), Popular/New channels, People and the app’s Settings.
The app’s language and notification settings can be modified from within the settings screen. You can specify the time interval after which the app should check for new updates, and enable/disable Background notifications etc.
Just like any fresh service, MindTalk is in need of more users to help it compete with the best. Releasing mobile clients for other major platforms could help the network in this regard.
