A few months back, we covered a web service named PicYou, which promised to be the Instagram for web. Now, however, the service is no longer web-only and has gone a step further. The developers have launched an iOS app for it as well. Not only does the app come with a respectable quantity and quality of filters, linking up with your friends on Facebook and Twitter is also very fast and convenient. PicYou for iOS offers photo effects, some basic editing options and decent integration with social networks. It has the edge over Instagram because of its web client that is sure to attract a lot of users.
If you already have an account for the PicYou web service, you can use it to log in to the app, or you may sign in using your Facebook or Twitter account. An app-specific account can also be created from the sign up menu, which is going to be a relief for many as most people like to shield their Facebook credentials from third-party services. Before you even log in, you can browse through the photos uploaded by other users. Once you have signed in to your account, you can invite any of your Facebook or Twitter friends to your PicYou network from within thea the app. All your friends’ activity on the network will show up in the Feed & Activity section of the app.
As with all apps of this kind, there are two ways you can upload a photo of your own to the PicYou network; you can either choose a photo from the Camera Roll, or snap a new pic from within the app. In both the cases, you can apply effects (the app comes packed with ten effect as of now) and frames to the photo. Each effect is the combination of a filter and a frame. You can toggle the frame on or off with a single touch. After the chosen effect has been applied, you are ready to share the photo with other PicYou users, or friends who aren’t on the network, via Facebook and Twitter.
The app is particularly useful for people who have been using the web service, but even if you are new to PicYou, the app is pretty good. If you’re looking for an alternative to Instagram, you should definitely give it a try. The app is available for free on the iTunes App Store.
