Many iOS users jailbreak their iPhone, iPad or iPod touch devices to get the amazingly detailed customization options the Cydia store has on offer. There are countless themes, wallpapers, fonts and ringtones available in the jailbreak store, but there are tweaks that still venture into unexplored avenues and bring something completely new to the mix when it comes to cosmetic features and customization options. Vuziq is one such Cydia app, and it is designed for the sole purpose of letting users set a video as the ringtone on their iDevice. Not only can you set the video ringtone as your default call alert, but it is also possible to choose separate videos for different contacts. The app uses YouTube as its source, and that means that it has a huge collection at its disposal.
Using Vuziq is simple, and looking for videos is as easy as searching YouTube. Before you get started, it is necessary to register for a new Vuziq account, and that requires nothing more than inputting your name, email address, age and favorite band. Once you have done that, you will be taken to the homepage of the Cydia app. You’ll find a strip for Music News, where you can read articles from various sources to stay up to date with the latest happenings in the music industry. This is just a secondary feature of Vuziq, and to get down to business, you have to navigate to the Download section using the big button in the middle of the bottom bar. Here, users will be presented with the trending videos on YouTube, and you can also search for any video using the bar at the top of the page.
Each video you find on Vuziq can be previewed before you download it. To do so, you will have to hit the Video Stream button. If you like what you see, tap the Download button, so that it becomes possible to use that video as a ringtone. Video found on Vuziq can also be shared with friends via email, Facebook and Twitter. Downloaded videos can be trimmed from the editing menu, so that they will begin playing from the part you like most. After you are satisfied with the video, go to the Contacts menu and choose the group or person to which you want to assign the video ringtone. It is also possible to set any video as a default ringtone, although it won’t override any videos you might have assigned to particular contacts.
The video ringtones from Vuziq will work both for phone calls and FaceTime requests. The only bad thing about this free app is that it is ad-supported, and displays ads both within the app, and when the video ringtone is being played. Apart from that, Vuziq is a fun app, so do give it a try by heading to the BigBoss repo in the Cydia store.
