Instagram is among the most popular iOS apps of all time. The photo sharing service has been on the top of its genre for so long that the idea of a competitor app appears almost laughable, but the team behind Via.Me seems to think otherwise. Via.Me is a new iPhone app that, like Instagram, lets its users apply filters to their photos, and then share them with a single touch. The filter collection pretty impressive, and sharing options include your own social network, as well as other users of Via.Me. You can follow your friends to stay up to date with their posts, forming a Via.Me network of your own. Update: Via.Me now has an Android app, too. We’ve added a link to its Play Store page at the end of the article.
One of the most convenient things about Via.Me is that you don’t have to sign up for a new app account, and all you need to do in order to enter the network is to link up your Facebook or Twitter account with Via.Me. After your social networks have been linked to the app, it will present you with the option of inviting your contacts to Via.Me. Even if you decline, it is possible to add them any other time you want. To get started, upload a photo to Via.Me. This can be done by tapping the big camera button in the middle of the bottom bar. The camera in the app has options that let you load a photo from your iPhone or iPad’s camera roll, or you can choose to shoot a photo from within the app and publish it straight away. However, before you publish the pic, Via.Me gives you a multitude of really awesome photo filters (18 in total), and you can apply them to the image with a single tap. The filters are named mostly after countries, and you can get a preview of each from the provided thumbnails.
When a photo is all set to be published, hit the Next button. This brings you to the Caption screen. Here you can add any companion text that you want to post with the photo, and this area also has options which let you choose the posting destinations of the image. You have the option to post on your social networks, or you can choose to share the image with Via.Me users only. All the posts you publish on Via.Me will appear on your profile as well in the Feed section. The feed also displays updates from your other friends on the app.
To view publicly shared photos from users you don’t know, there is the Explore tab. In there you will find trending pics, and if you like any of them, you can follow the user who published it. The app is free, and you can grab it at the download link below.
Update: Via.Me is now available for Android as well, and can be downloaded from the Google Play Store via link provided below.
