MSE Update Utility v1.1 Is Fixed & Other Small Rants

So we released MSE Update Utility a few weeks back and it had some bugs. One of the most serious was the Exception Error which was due to the date format. This error is fixed now, but we did however find something interesting along the way.

It would work for every US, Short Date Format except in which “MMM” comes because in these type format the Month’s no. is replaced by its Name e.g (27/11/09) = (27-Nov-09) so VB(Visual Basic) is not able to interpret Nov and gives an error, rest it’ll work perfectly.

You can yourself try it on different Short Date Formats, and Short Date Format can be changed from “Control Panel > Clock, Language, and Region > Change the date, time or number format”.

We changed a major code of it, so you can also see if it updates Daily, Weekly and Monthly as required by just changing your System Date.

Please note that it requires .NET Framework 3.5 to run. Grab the latest version from the MSE Update Utility homepage.

Upcoming Features:

1. We might add proxy support(only if you guys ask for it).

2. The next release will have an option to check for updates multiple times a day(every 1 hour, every 2 hours, every 6 hours, and so on).

If you find any bugs or want any other feature, do let us know in the comments.

‘Slow Tips Day’ And Other Rants

Ever heard of the term “Slow News Day”, you can call today a “Slow Tips Day”. We are taking a small break today due to holidays but the tips will be back from tomorrow and this time you guys are in for a surprise.

We have a record for posting tips every day, even if it is one tip a day(you can count this post as a tip :P). Its been more than a year and we are still going strong.

Please Note: If you are having a certain problem or would love to request some tips, do let us know. We can technically work on almost any problem and try to fix it, and when we can’t, then there is always a workaround. ;)

Thanks for the update. There was a little problem though, before I could install.

You see, I never removed the old 1.1 after the date errors persisted. I just turned of the option to start up with windows. Now I downloaded the new 1.1 and tried to install. This is what I got: http://imgur.com/S0c8r.png

In case you're wondering: yes I have .NET 3.5 installed. I need to run Visual Studio for school and have the latest version of PAINT.NET installed, which requires .NET 3.5 SP1

Did you change the Date/Time format to US? This is very important since it won't work with any other Date/Time format, this is also one huge drawback.

  • http://twitter.com/Vordreller Vordreller

No, I didn't change the Date/Time format, and I'm not going to. I use this computer every single day for various applications. I can't just change my timeformat for 1 app, it's not practical.

I think this would be possible in C#, though I'm not sure. Perhaps you could ask on http://www.stackoverflow.com

    • Nakodari

Agreed, it is definitely not practical. The app will work for US users only(due to their correct date/format), but we will code it from ground up again in C# which will work with any date/format. This is one limitation at the moment and we have mentioned it in the post as well.

Among the problems I would like to address: your SEARCH bar (once I filled in any search items) doesn't have an arrow or whatever to click on to do the search. I've moved the mouse pointer as far right as possible, so that isn't the problem. What could it be?

Next issue. I cannot find on the Microsoft webpages any link to the MSE updater download.

Next. Even when I downloaded the MSE updater update 1.1, the product info still shows version 1.0.

Next. Even though I checkmarked updating on STARTUP in both places in that window, MSE still does not update on startup. I still have to update manually.

Your help is so much appreciated.
