Stream AirPlay Audio On iOS From iTunes, Apple TV & Other iDevices With AirFloat

AirPlay has been around in iOS for so long that at times it tends to get ignored when people are showing off all the great things their iPhone can do. Siri, iCloud and even the chameleon status bar get mentioned more than AirPlay, but that doesn’t diminish its usefulness and importance. Apple has kept things pretty simple with AirPlay while keeping it quite efficient at doing its job of streaming media to other iDevices in the vicinity. Maybe this near-perfection is the reason not many Cydia developers have thought about making changes to AirPlay’s default functionality. AirFloat, however, goes against this trend and demonstrates that AirPlay can be improved. The app that was taken down from the App Store in 2012 has returned to iOS via the Cydia store to provide you with an easy way to convert your iDevice into an AirPlay receiver, allowing you to play audio streams from iTunes, Apple TV or any other iDevice. YouTube For iOS Goes Universal, Offers AirPlay Support & Other Improvements

Google’s YouTube app for iOS has generally received positive feedback from most users since it's release, and has emerged as a major improvement over the pre-iOS 6 native YouTube app by Apple. Until today though, iPad and iPhone 5 users could only run the YouTube app in letterbox view, as it wasn't optimized for the high screen resolution and aspect ratio of these devices. Things have finally taken a turn for the better and after a wait of exactly three months, Google has made the YouTube app universal. Even if you are on iPhone, there are some new things on offer. The app now supports AirPlay, lets users edit playlists from their device, and introduces improved voice input options. Read More

Stream Airplay Audio From An iOS Device To Android Using HIFI

Being Apple’s proprietary wireless media streaming protocol suite, the renowned AirPlay feature can be used to remotely stream multimedia content across various iDevices. Courtesy of the company’s decision to authorize other manufacturers to utilize the audio (and in some cases, video) streaming aspect of AirPlay, there are quite a few solutions out their that allow non-iOS devices to receive streamed media content from any AirPlay-compatible iDevice. XDA member Android-HiFI has been busy developing an app that enables your Android device to act as an AirPlay receiver, which means you can now listen to whatever audio is being streamed from your Mac, iPhone, iPad or iPod touch on your Android device. The app sports a rather simple interface, and can run in the background. For streaming video content, you’ll only be able to listen to its audio. Other salient features of the app include manual adjustment of playback delay to sync audio with videos or other receiver devices, auto-adjustment of volume levels in case of incoming calls or upon unplugging the headset or turning off Bluetooth, and the option to keep the screen awake during playback. AirServer: Comprehensive Mac & PC AirPlay Suite With Screen Mirroring

I’ve never tried to hide my preference for iOS over Android, and for multiple reasons. While both platforms have a healthy share of strengths and weaknesses, iOS offers certain features (natively) that tip the scale, at least for me, in its favor, one of them being AirPlay. The formerly-labeled-AirTunes protocol received a feature and nomenclature overhaul back in 2010, whence it included not just audio, but any kind of media to be streamed to any AirPlay compatible device. Then, with iOS 5, Apple pooled in AirPlay mirroring, allowing you to replicate your supportive iPhone, iPod touch or iPad’s entire screen on the likes of compatible HDTVs, laptops, Macs etc. Speaking of Windows PCs and Macs in this regard, there’s perhaps no shortage of AirPlay apps for both platforms, paid or free, that offer pretty reasonable functionality. That’s why I was not too enthusiastic about AirServer, an AirPlay server application for Mac and Windows that claims to be way ahead of all its peers. Turns out, my skepticism was ill-warranted, as the app clearly blows away all the competition. Read More

Air Stream Media Player – Stream Videos & Photos From iOS Devices To Windows PC via AirPlay

If you have an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch running iOS 4.2 later, you should know you don’t need to buy an AirPlay receiver device to make use of the integrated AirPlay feature. While there are already a couple of solutions for Mac (such as AirPlayer and AirServer), users with Windows-powered computers needn’t despair either. Like (previously covered) Shareport4w for Windows, Air Stream Media Player streams media from from your iOS device to your Windows PC over a shared WiFi network. But while the former only streams music, Air Stream only streams videos (this includes YouTube videos) and photos. What’s the point? No wires and no waiting for your device to sync – that’s what. The next time your friend visits you with his iPhone after a hiking trip, you needn’t plug it in, login with his Apple ID and wait for it to sync just to view a couple of pictures and a few minutes of recorded video.
