It is always advised to analyze system drives for data fragmentation before starting off with defragmentation process. Unfortunately, both Windows Vista and Windows 7 native defrag tools can’t recommend drives which have to go through defragmentation process for gaining quicker access. To quickly check drives and perform data defragmentation, try My Defragmenter – an application with dead simple usage. It is however not comparable with previously covered Defraggler by Piriform in terms of features but can be used to quickly check which drives need defragmentation. It analyzes your auxiliary storage drives to check whether data defragmentation will do any good or not. If you don’t not sure what is data defragmentation, it is a process of arranging data contiguously in order to increase the access time. With My Defragmenter, you can schedule defragmentation to run the process at defined intervals.

The main interface presents all the system drives with general information about the disk space and last defrag results. Before performing defragmentation of selected drive(s), click Analyze to check whether disk defragmentation is required or not.

We recommend analyzing all the system drives to find current fragmentation status. After the disk analysis is finished, it will show you the data fragmentation percentage while showing which drives need defragmentation. Now select the suggested drive(s) and click Defragment to begin the process.

After defragmentation is complete, check the drives again to view the level of data fragmentation. To schedule the defrag process, click Scheduler and set time to defrag disk at defined time. It works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

Since data defragmentation is carried out by making data contiguous, it re-organizes the Windows registry space to let installed applications fetch associated registry keys with more speed.

Editor’s Note: It must be noted that registry defgramentation does not necessarily speed up your system by a huge margin. It does however speed up access to registry (but the effect is very minimal). You should only defrag your registry when your PC is clogged and only as a last resort.

The application allows user to view the generic registry size related information beforehand to check the degree of fragmentation. On the main screen, click Registry Information to check the fragmented registry data size.

To begin the thorough registry space analysis, click Analyze to begin the process. It takes some time to completely analyze the system which is subjected to size of yours Windows registry. After analyzing the registry, it will inform you about the fragmented registry size which can be optimized.

Just click Defrag to begin defragmentation process. After the registry is defragmented, you can check registry information to verify the size reduced. It supports Windows XP/Vista/7 while testing was done on Windows 7 x86 system.

Update: One reader has informed us that this software is unsafe and on attempting to review it again we found that our reader is correct. Therefore, we have removed the download link for this freeware. Defragmentation is a phenomenon of streamlining the non-contiguous data to make it contiguous in order to access data more rapidly. Windows offers a simple defrag tool and you can also find Advanced Defragmentation tools in numbers, generally the process is lengthy and takes a lot of time to completely defrag the disk’s content. Considering the importance, wouldn’t it be great if you can defrag the data which you frequently use, Contig is designed to full-fill this very need.

It is small application which runs in CLI environment, you’d just require to specify the folder path which you wish to defrag and it will start start adjusting the data contiguously. Usage complexity is relative, you would need to open command prompt with administrative privileges and run its executable file followed by the path of the folder. While testing, the application defragmented above 1000 files without taking much time. If you’re in need to defrag only mostly used data, you can try this application out.

Disk defragmentation results in better performance of your hard disk, some people don’t realize that. Windows come with a build-in defragmentation tool, but is too slow sometimes. If your computer activity involves a lot of hard disk usage, it is recommended that you should defrag and optimize your hard disk at least once a month.

One of my favorite 3rd party defragger is MyDefrag(formerly named JKDefrag) that allows you to quickly defrag and optimize your local drives. It can also perform the operation on external hard disk, USB Drive, or Flash Drive. It does not come as one tool, rather it has a few separate programs, each for one task as shown in the screenshot below.

Once you run an Analyze or Defrag operation, it will perform it on the whole hard disk, one drive at a time. You can continue the operation to the next drive by clicking Run > Continue. You can zoom to any level inside the Diskmap and also view the overall statistics.

So why use MyDefrag instead of the default Windows build-in Defrag utility? Because according to the developer, it is much faster, has more broader options, is customizable, and much more. Overall, the Fast Optimize operation is what I like the most.

When someone says defragment, it is usually understood to defrag the whole disk. This is because almost all 3rd party software for Windows allow you to defrag the whole disk. Defraggler, if you haven’t heard of it before is an excellent defragmentation tool that lets you defrag specific files and folders. It is developed by Piriform, the company behind both CCCleaner and Recuva and is Windows Vista compatible.

As far my test shows, Defraggler is the fastest defragmentation tool out there. To being defragmentation, open the tool, select the drive and click Analyze.

Once the analysis will finish, it will show you the visual drive map along with the fragmented files.

Click on File List tab, select all files that you want to defrag and finally click Defrag Checked button and you are done.

The whole process took less than 15 seconds with Defraggler, and the same process with Windows default defragment tool took 45 seconds. So you can see who is the clear winner here. Enjoy!
