It is always advised to analyze system drives for data fragmentation before starting off with defragmentation process. Unfortunately, both Windows Vista and Windows 7 native defrag tools can’t recommend drives which have to go through defragmentation process for gaining quicker access. To quickly check drives and perform data defragmentation, try My Defragmenter – an application with dead simple usage. It is however not comparable with previously covered Defraggler by Piriform in terms of features but can be used to quickly check which drives need defragmentation. It analyzes your auxiliary storage drives to check whether data defragmentation will do any good or not. If you don’t not sure what is data defragmentation, it is a process of arranging data contiguously in order to increase the access time. With My Defragmenter, you can schedule defragmentation to run the process at defined intervals.

The main interface presents all the system drives with general information about the disk space and last defrag results. Before performing defragmentation of selected drive(s), click Analyze to check whether disk defragmentation is required or not.

We recommend analyzing all the system drives to find current fragmentation status. After the disk analysis is finished, it will show you the data fragmentation percentage while showing which drives need defragmentation. Now select the suggested drive(s) and click Defragment to begin the process.

After defragmentation is complete, check the drives again to view the level of data fragmentation. To schedule the defrag process, click Scheduler and set time to defrag disk at defined time. It works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

We have previously reviewed a list of registry optimization & defragmentation utilities, such as, Simnet Registry Defrag, QuickSys RegDefrag, and Registry Life, the first two tools are designed especially to make registry data contiguous while latter is an advanced tool for cleaning & optimizing registry. Today we have come across WinMend Registry Defrag – an application which which claims to effectively rebuild the registry index in order to remove the unused fragments/voids. Since data defragmentation is carried out by making data contiguous, it re-organizes the Windows registry space to let installed applications fetch associated registry keys with more speed.

Editor’s Note: It must be noted that registry defgramentation does not necessarily speed up your system by a huge margin. It does however speed up access to registry (but the effect is very minimal). You should only defrag your registry when your PC is clogged and only as a last resort.

The application allows user to view the generic registry size related information beforehand to check the degree of fragmentation. On the main screen, click Registry Information to check the fragmented registry data size.

To begin the thorough registry space analysis, click Analyze to begin the process. It takes some time to completely analyze the system which is subjected to size of yours Windows registry. After analyzing the registry, it will inform you about the fragmented registry size which can be optimized.

Just click Defrag to begin defragmentation process. After the registry is defragmented, you can check registry information to verify the size reduced. It supports Windows XP/Vista/7 while testing was done on Windows 7 x86 system.

Update: One reader has informed us that this software is unsafe and on attempting to review it again we found that our reader is correct. Therefore, we have removed the download link for this freeware. We have covered some great registry defrag tools, so have a look at some alternatives – QuickSys RegDefrag, Registry Life, and Auslogic Registry Cleaner.

Defragmentation is a phenomenon of streamlining the non-contiguous data to make it contiguous in order to access data more rapidly. Windows offers a simple defrag tool and you can also find Advanced Defragmentation tools in numbers, generally the process is lengthy and takes a lot of time to completely defrag the disk’s content. Considering the importance, wouldn’t it be great if you can defrag the data which you frequently use, Contig is designed to full-fill this very need.

It is small application which runs in CLI environment, you’d just require to specify the folder path which you wish to defrag and it will start start adjusting the data contiguously. Usage complexity is relative, you would need to open command prompt with administrative privileges and run its executable file followed by the path of the folder. It comes with four switches, which are v,a,q,s for printing defrag information, analyze defrag process, run defragmenter in quite mode, and perform recursive defragmentation of sub-directories respectively. However, for newly created folder, you can simply run contig.exe without any switches followed by the path of folder.

Once defragmentation is completed, it will display number of files processed and average fragmentation before and after the process.

While testing, the application defragmented above 1000 files without taking much time. If you’re in need to defrag only mostly used data, you can try this application out.

It runs on all Windows based OS, we tested it on Windows 7 x86 system.

Disk Speedup is a simple and efficient, two-click defrag tool. It compresses data on the hard drives, optimizing it for enhanced computer performance. Generally, computer users reject defrag applications because they assume them to be complex and time-consuming. If you’ve also avoided computer defragmentation thus far, then you should consider giving this super-fast defrag application a shot.

It has an appealing interface with easy-to-follow buttons, which makes it a perfect choice even for novice users. Like other similar applications, it offers to analyze the hard disks before starting the defrag operation. Based on the analysis, you can decide whether or not defragmentation is required. You can check the hard drives you wish to defragment from the Defrag Now option in sidebar. Clicking the Defrag Selected button will start the defragmentation. If you are performing the defragmentation after you’ve finished your work, you also have the option to shut down the system after the process completes.

Schedule defragmentation is also supported. You can specify the action to be performed (analyze, defrag or both) as well as the frequency, day, time and disks on which it is to be performed. Additionally, you can also set the application to perform auto-defrags when the PC is idle for a pre-defined time period.

As compared to other defrag applications, we found it to have a simpler interface. The commands can easily be followed even by novice users, making this tool a good choice for defragmentation of your hard disks.

This product supports Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. Testing was carried out on Windows 7 x86 system.

Even though Windows build-in defragmentation tool is easy to use and can be scheduled to automatically defrag selected drive(s). You might be thinking as to why go for a dedicated defrag tool? The reason being, Windows intrinsic defragmentation tool is not that efficient in terms of defragmenting data and especially in speed. Smart Defrag is a free and powerful defrag tool, which promises you to instantly defrag your data. It is both efficient and optimized fragmentation analysis algorithm proven to be one of the best when it comes to other defrag tools available.

Defragmenting the data is something that repels novices to get their hand-on to it. With it’s interactive interface & simple usage, you won’t need any special guidance, as usage is quite simple. Just select the drives that you want to defrag and an option from the given list which includes; Defrag Only, Fast Optimize, and Deep Optimize. Once all settings are in place, click Start to begin the defrag task.

If you’re defragmenting your drives for the very first time, click Analyze to let it generate a complete report and let it reckon you for the best defrag option to go for. Analyzing takes less than a minute and helps a lot in knowing the defrag ratio, files to be defragmented, and other system details.

The best amongst other options is that it lets you choose the auto-pause resources usage amount, whenever the resource usage exceeds the specified amount, it will automatically pause the defrag process. So, you can carry on to your work along with defrag process anytime without conceiving any trouble in system performance. You can also let is start automatically when your system is in idle state. Under Auto Defrag window, you can easily configure these options.

Under Schedule & Options window, you can schedule a weekly/daily defragmentation of drives and configure other settings respectively. Under Options, you can enable/disable: SmartSilent technology while defragmenting and stop defrag process on batteries.

We were wholly satisfied with an instant defragmentation process. It is especially built keeping large disk volume in mind. So, if you’ve been dealing with enormous data and haven’t defrag your drive lately, try giving this tool a shot to defrag your data without much hassle involved.

It runs on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. Testing was carried out on system running Windows 7 32-bit.

WinContig, unlike most other defrag apps, has a straightforward interface which allows one to defrag any files and folders instead of the whole disk. We all know that the default Windows Disk Defragmenter is too slow since it would analyze and defrag the whole drive instead of a specific file or folder. We have reviewed plenty of other alternatives, such as, Defraggler, Auslogics Disk Defrag, and MyDefrag.

What makes WinContig stand out is the portability, fast efficient analysis, and defragmentation speed. According to the developers, it doesn’t create any installation directories or registry entries. Thus, making it an excellent tool for system administrators while on the go.

After analyzing all files, it asks to check the disk for error and clean all temp files before defragmentation. Below are few sets of screenshots you might want to go though before giving the app a shot.

The latest version improves the overall performance, adds the ability to pass a file/folder path in the command-line, and exclude items from the analysis and defragmentation operations by masks and sizes. Worked seamlessly on our Windows 7 32-bit OS system.

Download WinContig

Auslogics Disk Defrag is a free tool to fight disk fragmentation. It works extremely fast and is not only a disk defragmenter, rather it also performs disk optimization tasks. Its key features include that it keeps the free space consolidated, arranges the system files in a smart way and keeps the MFT reserved zones(it is basically a place where the operating system saves metadata about every file and folder) clear.

Simply select the drives and hit the Defrag button to start the defragmentation process, the Pause and Stop buttons allow you to control the defragmentation process.

Download Auslogics Disk Defrag

We have also covered a registry cleaner tool by Auslogic in the past. Auslogics Disk Defrag tool works on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. It works on both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. Enjoy!

We have covered material regarding Disk defragmentation in the past, you may check one of the important posts for Windows 7 disk defragmentation here. No doubt Windows 7 has many added features in comparison to Windows Vista and XP, one of them is the Advanced Disk Defragmentation feature, now you may easily perform common disk defragmentation tasks from the command line as well.

Now first of all launch the command prompt by clicking Start and then type cmd and press Enter. The command prompt will be loaded, now you may run the defrag command to perform the necessary operations. But you will need to use different switches with the defrag command in order to perform different tasks relevant to defragmentation. Simply type defrag and hit enter, Windows will then list down all of its available options(also called the switches).

Now let me tell you some of the common options which you may use with the defrag command to perform disk defragmentation.

defrag /r Defrags multiple drives simultaneously

defrag –a Performs the disk defrag analysis

defrag –v Prints the defrag results

defrag –w Defrags each and every thing

defrag C: -v –w Defrags the whole C drive

For example, here I executed the disk defragmentation analysis command (defrag -a) on my C drive successfully.

The core benefit of performing the disk defragmentation via command line is that the speed of the disk defragmentation process is exceptionally fast. Enjoy!

Disk defragmentation results in better performance of your hard disk, some people don’t realize that. Windows come with a build-in defragmentation tool, but is too slow sometimes. If your computer activity involves a lot of hard disk usage, it is recommended that you should defrag and optimize your hard disk at least once a month.

One of my favorite 3rd party defragger is MyDefrag(formerly named JKDefrag) that allows you to quickly defrag and optimize your local drives. It can also perform the operation on external hard disk, USB Drive, or Flash Drive. It does not come as one tool, rather it has a few separate programs, each for one task as shown in the screenshot below.

Once you run an Analyze or Defrag operation, it will perform it on the whole hard disk, one drive at a time. You can continue the operation to the next drive by clicking Run > Continue. You can zoom to any level inside the Diskmap and also view the overall statistics.

So why use MyDefrag instead of the default Windows build-in Defrag utility? Because according to the developer, it is much faster, has more broader options, is customizable, and much more. Overall, the Fast Optimize operation is what I like the most.

Download MyDefrag

It is compatible with Windows 2003, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003/2008, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. Both 32-bit and 64-bit OS are supported. For more, also check out Defraggler and Windows 7 Disk Defragmentation.

The defragmentation process searches your disk partitions and makes sure that the stored files are in one contiguous piece which results in better system performance. If you want to maintain your file system then the easiest and perhaps the most important way is that you should routinely defrag your drives. The windows 7 has improved disk defragmentation utility which gives users more control over defragmentation tasks. The most important features of Windows 7 defragmenter is that it lets you safely terminate the defrag process any time without any adverse effect and can defrag multiple volumes at the same time.

Note: Also check out a 3rd party advanced tool called Auslogics Disk Defrag, it is much faster and performs better.

Lets explore how to do it in Windows 7. Launch it from Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defregmenter.

By clicking Defragment Disk you will be able to start defragmentation of the disk. You can also schedule the defragmentation process by clicking Configure Schedule. Specify the Frequency, Day, Time and Disk and click OK to configure scheduled defragmentation.

Once defragmentation is complete, you will be able to see considerable change in your system performance. Enjoy!

When someone says defragment, it is usually understood to defrag the whole disk. This is because almost all 3rd party software for Windows allow you to defrag the whole disk. Defraggler, if you haven’t heard of it before is an excellent defragmentation tool that lets you defrag specific files and folders. It is developed by Piriform, the company behind both CCCleaner and Recuva and is Windows Vista compatible.

As far my test shows, Defraggler is the fastest defragmentation tool out there. To being defragmentation, open the tool, select the drive and click Analyze.

Once the analysis will finish, it will show you the visual drive map along with the fragmented files.

Click on File List tab, select all files that you want to defrag and finally click Defrag Checked button and you are done.

The whole process took less than 15 seconds with Defraggler, and the same process with Windows default defragment tool took 45 seconds. So you can see who is the clear winner here. Enjoy!
