Facebook For iOS Gets Voice Messages, Video Sharing & A Better Nearby Tab

At the beginning of this month, Facebook Messenger’s Android and iOS clients got updated with voice messaging. The Android app for Facebook received the same feature a few days later, and now the iOS variant has also been updated to let you attach audio recordings with your messages. The latest update adds some other changes to the mix as well; you can finally record and share videos without having to leave the app. There is no apparent change in the photo sharing menu, but once you initiate the camera, you now get the option to switch between image and video capture. The Nearby tab has been revamped, and you get to apply a variety of filters while performing a search in nearby locations. In the past few months, Mark Zuckerberg and his team have been working quite hard to beef up the Facebook Messenger app for Android and iOS with some handy features. What started as a rather simple, standalone mobile messaging app for avid Facebookers now qualifies as a handy SMS replacement that doesn’t even require a Facebook account to get configured. So far, the app’s content sharing capabilities revolved around text messages, images, emojis and locations. The latest update brings the added functionality of voice messaging to both Android and iOS variants; instant 1-minute audio messages that can be shared as part of a conversation. Back in August, the official Facebook app for iOS was updated with significant speed improvements and overall performance enhancements, courtesy the company’s decision to finally let go of its heavy reliance on HTML5 in order to rebuild the app using native code. As expected, this resulted in an improvement in the app’s ratings in the iTunes App Store, as more users opted for the official Facebook client instead of using one of the various third-party alternatives or the web interface. It’s been four long months since Android fans have been waiting for a similar update to head their way and today, Facebook has finally put an end to their wait. The official Facebook Android app has been updated in the Play Store with noticeable speed improvements, a brand new stories bar and better photo viewing. If you linked your Facebook account to your Mac running OS X 10.8.2, Mountain Lion, you would have noticed there was an option to import your Facebook friends to the Contacts (previously called Address Book) app. As far as automatically importing data from your Facebook account to Mountain Lion goes, this is the full extent of it. There is still other information, like Facebook events that you could do with viewing in Calendar (formerly known as iCal) but there isn’t an apparently easy way to do it. It is extremely easy to import your Facebook events to Calendar and the process only seems obscure because you can’t import them to Mountain Lion from Calendar; rather, you have to export them from Facebook to Calendar. You’ll need to open Facebook in your browser on Mac, not necessarily Safari, but you will need to be using your Mac. This isn’t something you can do by accessing Facebook on your iOS device. The latest update adds the much-desired Share button to posts on your News Feed, but that’s not the only new thing in the app. You can tag people in posts and comments now, and there are a lot of new emoticons that you can use in messaging. The Android app has been updated with the option to create albums. The tagging works just like in the Facebook website, provising you with suggestions as soon as you start typing a name. There are two big online social networks in the world today: Facebook and Twitter. I don’t know about you, but I use them quite differently.
