If you are a fan of GIF animations, then iOS is a pretty good platform to be on, owing to the number of GIF creating apps available for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. A few months back we covered GifBoom, which allows its users to create GIFs by stitching together as many photos as they want. The output provided by the newly released MoPic is pretty similar, but it comes with the ability to use a video for creating animations, rather than just photos.

Using the app is pretty simple. At the start up, you have to choose how you want to create the GIF. There is the option to choose a video or set of photos from the library, while you can also shoot videos from within the app. For importing videos, you get the option to select the quality of each import via choice from among Smooth, Normal and Rough.

So, once you have the video imported (or shot) to MoPic, you are ready to proceed with setting up the GIF. For all videos, the app will display the frames on the top of the screen, and a user can select which frames they want to add to the animation. After you are decided on the frames, hit the Use button, which will automatically take you to the Effects page. A little disappointingly, there aren’t a lot of effects available in MoPic for now, and you can just adjust the speed of the created animation. The speed can be tinkered with via the slider provided below the preview. When all is ready, go to the Share/Save section, and from there, you get the option to send the video to Facebook, or to any of your friends via email.

MoPic is an app, which obviously needs a lot of enhancements and new features, but if you want to easily convert a video into a GIF image, do give this app a try, which is free and ad-supported.

Say hello to Animado - a fun way of sending animated text messages from Android as GIF images. Animado doesn’t use any of those commonly used (and rather boring) swivel, slide in or dancing animation effects for your texts. Instead, the app, records whatever you type in its text box complete with all typos and corrections that occurred in between and allows you to replay them later. In addition, the app lets you convert those recorded text messages into animated GIF images and share them with your friends. Details to follow.

Recording begins as soon as you land on the New Message screen. Type whatever you like in the text box and replay your text using the Play button. The refresh button at the top can be used to reset the text box whereas, to modify font color/size, animation speed and the app’s general settings, tap the settings button on the top-right corner of this screen.

Once you’ve recorded a message, tap the Animate button to convert your message into a GIF sequence. The Animate button now gets replaced by a green Share button that can be tapped to display the share menu.

The My Message button on the app’s homescreen stores all your messages. You have the choice to replay, animate and share each saved message as many times as you like. Animado is simple to use and a fun way to let your friends know whatever blunders you made while typing the message that you’ve shared.

One of the first (if not the first) of its kind on the Android Market, Gifinator is a well-crafted, easy-to-use GIF animation creator for Android. The app allows you to take multiple snaps from your device’s camera, then chains them together in a GIF sequence with a user-defined resolution and frame rate. With enough creativity (and a few taps) you can create awesome stop-motion animations with your Android smartphone’s camera. You may then save these GIF files to your device or share them with your friends. The free version of the app lets you string up to 10 snaps only while the full version sports no such limitation. Also, the free variant only allows you to save GIFs in the lowest of the three available resolutions (160×120, 320×480 and 640×480).

I’ll be honest. When we first installed the app, we expected it to have a run-of-the-mill interface and nothing but the most essential features. Needless to say, the app far exceeded our expectations. The interface is extremely well-crafted and the app itself is quite flexible.

Each photo you capture within the Shoot screen makes for a frame in the resulting GIF sequence. As you capture one photo after the other, the app displays a preview of each at the top of the screen along with its serial number. Swipe left or right across the screen to scroll to frames that may have moved out of view. Select a frame and tap the “X” button below to delete it. You can even select one of three available effects / filters (Mono, Negative and Sepia) for each frame you capture.

Once you’re seuquence of photos is complete, tap the ✔ button below to proceed to the Edit screen. Said screen displays a preview of the resulting GIF file and allows you to alter its frame rate (speed with which the GIF file cycles between captured photos), resolution and orientation.

On tapping the ✔ button on this screen, the app creates the GIF file and displays the rendered result in a separate dialogue box from within which you can Share the GIF animation with your friends or Save it to your device. All saved files can be found within the mnt/sdcard/gifinator/ directory (the /gifinator directory on your SD card).

DP Animation Maker is a simple software that converts common images into moving animations. You can transform a simple PNG, JPG, BMP etc into an AV, GIF and an EXE file with excellent graphical effects. It contains many built in options to add effects like  rain, lightning, falling leaves, etc to make your still images into dynamic graphics. You can then save the graphic in GIF or AVI format. These can later be added to a website or can be used as a profile picture on a social networking website.

You can import images from the File menu via the Open Project option. From here, you can later add effects and save the project.

Click on Add Animation button and select animations to add to the image. From here, you can also add other images and immerse them in the current image.

Your selected effects will be automatically added to the image and will continuously appear on the image, hence making it a moving graphic. As you can see the image below, the rotating lighting effect has been added to the image.

You can edit the added effect(s) via the Edit Animation button from the left hand side menu and set animation boundaries. Multiple effects can also be added to a single image. For instance, the below image has grass, falling leaves and magic dust effects added to it which has transformed its look.

To remove any effect, select it from the left hand side menu and click on the Remove button. You can save the created graphic as a GIF or AVI from the File menu or the buttons on the top of the main interface.

The saved AVI file can then be played in a media player (e.g. Windows Media Player, VLC Player, etc) that supports AVI files. The still image hence becomes a moving graphic or video.

We have covered many posts which are centered around GIF image format, such as create animated GIF from images, convert video to animated GIF, and extract images from GIF among many others.

So why GIF? Because it is easier to distribute animation in GIF format than some video format, and the animation can be created with both images and videos.

UnFreez is a free tool that allows users to create GIF animation from multiple GIF images. The images must be in the same resolution. Just drag & drop the GIF images, set the options, and hit Make Animated GIF button.

Unfortunately it does have some limitations, like you cannot create an animated GIF from multiple GIF animation images, nor does it convert the images to GIF format. For the latter you can use Image Tuner or Image Format Converter.

How many times do we come across some awesome gif animation and wish that we could extract some frames? GIF Frame Extractor(direct download link here) is a free tool for Windows that lets you extract frames from any animated GIF and save them to JPG or PNG image formats instantly. You can use the extracted frame image as your profile picture or just share them with your friends and co-workers.

Run the tool, click Open and select the GIF animation whose frames you want to extract. You will see the number of frames on the left sidebar.

Select any frame that you want to extract and click Save. You can choose whether to save them in JPG or PNG format.

In the screenshot below, you will find multiple frames extracted from my favorite Awesome Human Skating GIF animation.

The only drawback is that you cannot batch extract all frames with a single click, you will have to manually select every frame from the left sidebar and save them manually.  Otherwise it’s a great tool for quickly extracting your favorite frames from GIF animation. Enjoy!

Cool Webcam Avatars is an online service that lets you create a short two second animated avatars with your webcam. Two seconds seems like a very short time, but it’s really fun to make an animation in this short span.

Click Create Avatar button on top, it will ask for permission to access your webcam, click Allow.

Now click the Start button and it will begin recording. Once it’s done, you will be able to see the preview, clicking Download will take you to another page where it asks for registration. You can ignore it and download it by clicking the link on the left side. Registering with the site allows you to make this animation yours so that it can be accessed later.
