gm-notify (Gmail Notifier) is a lightweight app-indicator for Ubuntu which integrates with the system tray to provide Gmail notifications. gm-notify is designed to utilize notify-osd and indicator-applet to deliver seamless integration and bubble message pop-ups. Hence, it works quite well for the newer versions of Ubuntu such as 10.10 and 11.04. What makes gm-notify better than other applications of its kind (such as the previously reviewed CheckGmail) is that it uses Canonical’s notify-osd on-screen-display notification agent, with semi-transparent click-through bubbles. Notify OSD presents these notifications as ephemeral overlays, which can be clicked through to avoid obstruction during work.

Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04 users can install gm-notify from the Ubuntu Software Center; the Launchpad package (link given at end of this post) or by entering the following command in the Terminal.

sudo apt-get install gm-notify

As mentioned by the developer, gm-notify will not run on very old Ubuntu systems. However, Ubuntu 10.04 users can install gm-notify from the below PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gm-notify-maintainers/ppa
sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install gm-notify

Once installed, launch gm-notify from the Unity Dash and login with your Gmail credentials.

Once done, gm-notify will integrate with the system tray and allow you to access your Inbox and provide a display of unread email count.

Notifications for new mails will be displayed in the form of click-through bubble messages.

Gmail Notifiers are abundant, we have reviewed some good ones, such as, Spiffy and Scott’s Gmail Alert, but it becomes quite difficult to find a good Google Services notifier which supports both Gmail and Google Reader – two tools which every webmaster and tech enthusiast is familiar with. GWatchman is a portable system tray app that offers notifications for both these services and also supports Growl (a great addition).

The default notification is good enough as you can see from the screenshot below, but users who want alerts to display via Growl can enable this functionality as well.

Most users, like me, rely on Growl for all notifications to prevent multiple applications from displaying notifications and creating a conflict. So having a Growl support is a plus.

To set it up, first you need to provide your Google Account credentials. Both username and Password are saved inside the XML file (with password being encrypted). The checking interval can be set to either Manual or from 30 seconds to 3 hours.

Select Alert from left sidebar to select the Layout of the native pop-up notification. Growl can also be enabled from here.

It is completely portable since all settings are saved inside a simple XML file, residing in the same folder as the executable. It worked seamlessly on our Windows 7 x86 system and was surprisingly stable, requires .NET Framework 4. The developer is actively working on the application so you can expect some new functionality in future.

Download GWatchman

Update: The developer has released the latest version with some new features:

Added option to turn off mail or reader checking

Added support for checking all folders/labels for gmail

Added option to change background image and text color for native pop-up

Added “dismiss delay” option to native pop-up settings

Spiffy is an advanced portable GMail notifier for Windows. Simply place it somewhere safe and double-click it to begin. What makes it unique is that it is totally customizable, which means every aspect can be customized.

Want a skinnable tray popup alert? Done. Want tray icon to change on new email? Done. Want a custom sound alert when a new email arrives? Done. Want to customize the GUI? Done.

But the ability doesn’t end here. You can set a custom check mail interval, choose the show the alert once or when the message is read, there is a build-in Tell Me Again option for missed alerts, it supports authentication(Proxy support), has autostart and hide options, and more.

It supports up to 2 GMail accounts. The only think I would like to see in this app is the jumplist support. It would be great if all new messages are listed in the jumplist and you can access any email quickly. But since Microsoft has not provided any documentation for jump lists to 3rd party developers, this feature will have to wait.

Download Spiffy

It works on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003/2008, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. For more, check out previously covered Scott’s GMail Notifier for Windows and CheckGMail for Ubuntu.

In June, we reviewed a brand new tool called up2date that was mainly targeted towards geeky users who would love to keep a watch on their GMail inbox, latest tweets, and favorite RSS feeds. While I gave version 1.1 a try, it was quite buggy and lagged sometimes.

Today the developer has released version 1.2 which fixes almost all bugs, improves the performance, has a whole new interface(gives a more MAC style look and feel), and adds some new features. Now you can not only read latest tweets, but can also post a new tweet.

You can also quickly access the accounts and other options from the system tray context menu.

Note that you can add multiple GMail and Twitter accounts, it also supports multiple RSS feeds. If you want keep more privacy, you can password protect it(using the lock button). I was having hard time using this lock in previous version, the new version has this fixed too.

Download Up2Date

It works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. Enjoy!
