iOS devices are used for a lot of purposes, not the least of which is navigation. Not only can you view detailed maps of any place on earth using your iPhone, there are also a lot of apps available in the App Store which supplement travelling and make navigation even easier. That’s exactly what Extra Mile does, as the app is a comprehensive replacement for the stock Maps app in iPhone and iPod touch. With Extra Mile, you get voice directions, route mapping, as well as a lot of other useful navigational features, like generating travel logs and calculating the fuel cost of your trips.

Without having to go through a lot of sign up steps, you can start using Extra Mile as soon as you launch the app. Just hit the Start button before you begin driving, and the app will begin its tracking. You even get a few seconds’ head start to make the calculations as accurate as possible. Extra Mile will track your current location automatically to present the most suitable maps for you, and is also smart enough to display the price units in your local currency without any prompting. The app will give you voice directions when you hit the Voice button in the map. If you juts start the app and begin travelling, Extra Mile will track your route and distances automatically, but it can prove to be more helpful if you use the GoTo option, which will help you map a route to your desired destination. An estimate for travelling time is also presented to the user.

If you want to make notes about your excursion, there is the Log tab for that, which will allow you to record the events and landmarks of your journey in a chronological order. Another way of viewing records of your travels is to go to the Calendar menu, which keeps all your navigation history in the app. The Dashboard section highlights the money you have spent so far on your trip, along with your current speed and the distance you have travelled. Extra mile is highly customizable, and you can specify fuel rates, your vehicle type and addresses for your home and work places. The app also advises to switch off your car’s engine if you stay stationary for a considerable amount of time.

Extra Mile can also be used to generate detailed reports of your travels and expenses, but to unlock the Reports section, you will have to make an in-app purchase of $2.99. Another limitation in the free version of the app is that you will only be able to save 20 trips at a single time, but it is possible to keep using the app indefinitely by deleting older trips.

Where To Go? is a location-based amenity and point of interest (POI) finder for Android and iOS-powered devices. Based on user preferences and interests, the app fetches relevant search results from no less than 12 location categories and subcategories, and displays them on a map. Whether you’re looking for a nearby ice cream parlor, transportation and education facilities, real estate agents, or want to locate a cardiologist anywhere in the world, this app takes you to the desired location in just a few taps. Categories can be filtered as per requirement, and once an appropriate match is found, you can use the app to get turn-by-turn directions to the selected location. In addition, the app maintains a history your recent searches, and lets you add locations to favorites. More to follow.

Although, the official Google Maps mobile client and several other navigation apps are quite sufficient when it comes to looking for nearby points of interest, most of them lag behind this app quite considerably in terms of customizability, interactivity and aesthetics. Sporting the looks and features of its iOS counterpart, Where To Go? for Android arranges all the content on its homescreen under various tabs, namely Home, Favorites, Recents, Goodies and Settings.

One of the highlights of the app is the unique, visually pleasing route that it takes to help locate your point of interest. It presents you with a compass under the Home tab, with various location categories arranged all along the circular dial. All you need to do is drag the pointer to or tap the required category. The screen that follows lists all the subcategories under your selection. Just tap the required subcategory to get all relevant locations displayed on a map.

Tapping the List button on the app’s homescreen displays search results in a list. Another useful feature of the app is that it lets you customize each category as per requirement. For instance, you can easily eliminate all junior schools from the list of educational institutions in your vicinity, and/or add a specific subcategory of your own.

While exploring locations on map, you can toggle between list and grid view. The app also lets you view contact numbers, star ratings and reviews of various locations. You can share this info over email.

Can’t decide where to go to pass some time? No problem; just give your device a little shake, and let the app will suggest a random location.

The only annoying aspect of an otherwise great app is the ads that are displayed within it. You can, however, upgrade to the ad-free version of the app for a meager $1. Although the app, with its current set of features is already way ahead of its counterparts, the developer has hinted at adding a lot more goodies in the future updates. Multiple language support and option to access the app’s content while offline are a few of the features that have been promised.

Every Windows Phone 7 out there has a GPS embedded in it. Mostly, this extremely useful part of the hardware is just used for navigation and while using maps, but actually, the GPS can be used to do a lot of other cool stuff as well. GPS Calculator is a new app for Mango phones, which unleashes the true potential of GPS, and lets you perform just about anything related to location and maps. Read on to know all about this new app, which comes with a refreshingly useful concept.

The first section which comes up when GPS Calculator is launched, is the Project menu. Here, you get to find out the place which lies in any direction from a location, at a certain distance. You can either choose your current location as the projection’s starting point, or there is the option to select a location on the map. As soon as the Project menu gets a starting point, the longitude and latitude of that place start showing up in respective fields. Now you have to tell GPS Calculator the direction and distance you want to move for, and that is done by filling the Distance and Bearing fields. You can choose the unit for distance by tapping the button next to the field (Miles by default). When you are done, hit Calculate. This will give you the coordinates of the location you will end up at if you move in the projected distance in the specified direction. As getting just the coordinates might not be too useful, you can ask GPS Calculator to plot them on map for you by tapping the show on map button.

GPS Calculator is very useful if you want to find out the distance between two places on the map. Like the Project menu, Distance can take input in one of the two ways; via locking on to your current location, or through selecting a location on map. You just have to define two points, and the app will tell you how far apart they are from each other. Once again, you can change the unit of distance by tapping the Miles button.

Arguably, the most useful feature of GPS Calculator is the calculation of Area. Doing so is easy, and you just have to define 3 or more points on the map, forming a closed shape, and the app will tell you the approximate area of the enclosed space. If you know a location’s coordinates, then the app can come in handy for converting the longitude and latitude values to exact, and more understandable, bearings.

GPS Calculator will allow you to store most of its results for offline viewing if you add them to your favorites, and its calculating features can work offline too. For free, the app is definitely worth a try due to the bundle of really useful features it brings to WP7.

Every week, a new fitness app makes its way into the Windows Phone Marketplace. Such apps offer to track your GPS location during your workout sessions, the amount of calories you burn, the duration of your workout and much more. Nokia had pioneered the concept of a fitness app during the days of its Symbian OS and now it has re-launched Sports Tracker for its new mobile platform, Windows Phone 7. Sports Tracker offers various options for tacking your workouts whether you are Walking, Running, Cycling or Skiing, and keeps a diary of your workouts over a period of time. It doesn’t take much to figure out Sports Tracker once you have launched it. Just tap start a new workout to track how much calories you can burn in a stretch. During the workout, the app lets you keep a track of  your pace and the distance you have covered. You can swipe your finger on the screen to alternate between a map view and data view. The map view primarily shows your GPS location on Bing Maps with the distance traveled, duration and average speed displayed at the top of the screen. Tapping the GPS icon in top-left corner of the same screen centers the map around your location.

The data view lets you view the amount of calories you have burned and your altitude above sea level, which can be very handy if you are skiing, trekking, or rock climbing.

While human beings cannot match computers in terms of efficiency and speed, there are some things which can only be done properly with a human hand and mind, at least until now. Many services and apps for iOS can help you navigate while driving, but the information is, usually, pretty mechanical, and can never replicate a phone call from your co-worker, telling you of a road-block on the way to work. Waze is an app for iPhone and iPad that lets people collaborate with each other to map out the best route to a particular place. Users of the app broadcast any information they might have about a hazard or accident regarding a particular area of any road. Details after the break.

If you don’t really want to be a part of the community, then you can use Waze without signing up for an account, as that way, you will be able to see all the reports filed by other users, but the app won’t allow you to submit reports of your own. Signing up is easy, and will just require your email ID along with a new username and password. Once the sign up procedure is complete, you will be guided through Waze via a graphical tutorial. In setting up the app, choose the relevant area, and even if you don’t, your current location will show up on the map by default (provided location services are enabled and the app has been permitted to use them). You can use Waze like any other navigation app, with voice-based directions support.

At the bottom left of the screen, the menu of Waze can be accessed. Menu is your personalized dashboard for viewing the latest activities of people around you. You can view your history and profile in the My Waze section, and even set your mood for everyone to see. Not all moods are available by default, and you have to accomplish certain milestones to be able to unlock these features (like travelling 160 kilometers with Waze). The app’s visual and navigational Settings can also be customized from the main Menu. If you are done navigating, and just want to explore the app, use the Switch Off button to turn navigation off. For simple Navigation from one place to another, just choose that option from the menu, and mark your destination. Waze will show the estimated time to travel, and the distance from your current location to that place,

Reports is the feature that really defines Waze, and sets it apart from other apps of its kind. You can read reports about your area from the main menu under the Reports section. The three types of reports which Waze supports include Police reports, Accidents and Traffic alerts. In addition to these, you can interact with other users via the Chit Chat section of the app. To report an incident of your own, you have to go to the separate reporting section of the app. If you want, you can even add pictures with your reports, which might prove helpful in making others understand the real nature of the problem at any place.

Waze is a free app, and if you are a driver, and hate getting stuck in traffic, then do give it a try.

After installation, you can create a group for your employees to join later. Just enter a Name and Password, and the app assigns you an ID for your group, with which your employees can Join Group later. GPS Punch! requests your physical location, so that it can keep a track of your, as well as your employees’, locations thereafter.

The app presents five main options, namely, Groups, Status, Record, History and Settings. You may Invite a New Member through Groups. The Status tab lets you view your current location, while List gives an overview of the members of the group, and their present status.

Members of the group can update their status using the bubble icon on top, and these statuses are shown with each member in the List mode. Settings offers tweaking preferences such as changing username and password, and Groups Management, where you can set the Administrator privileges to only yourself with Personal, or to the entire group by tapping All.

GPS Punch! comes with a few bugs, too. For instance, it crashed upon tapping History after having been used for a few times. Inviting people through email was also a little problematic. Despite the shortcomings, however, considering that it is a free app (ad-supported, though), it may still merit a try. You can find it at the iTunes link below.

Provided you’ve downloaded the map of your current location on your device, you can use the app including the aforementioned Follow Me service while offline. The mechanism works as follows. The Follow Me feature, when activated, triggers your device’s camera, GPS, internet (if used online) and various sensors to trace your exact geographic location, position on road and car movements. On your screen, you can view the road in real, a virtual map, as well as a car that serves as your guide for the route. Not only does the car lead you to your specified destination, but also keeps you apprised of all the turns and stoppages via flashing indicators and brake lights. In addition, the app, through various alarms and on-screen driving details, ensures that you remain fully alert, and hence, safe while on the drive. The Follow Me feature is currently available in selective countries only.

Maps, on the other hand, are packed with informative and 3D content. You can manually search for a place anywhere on the globe, rotate and zoom in/out of maps, get detailed directions between any two locations on map, and get the entire route spoken aloud in multiple languages, select from various map layers/content (speed cameras, traffic information, 3D buildings etc.), styles (map, satellite) and points of interest as per your liking. The app also supports displaying detailed 14-day weather forecasts of various locations on graph. That’s not all; you can also view real-time reflection of day/night time in various regions of the world through the rotating globe.

Starting with Windows 7, the Windows Sensor and Location platform was provided by Microsoft to enable applications to adapt to computers environment, including tracking your location with the help of GPS devices, WLAN radios etc. The platform was introduced to provide a standard way to integrate sensor and location devices into Windows. Geosense is a Windows Location and Sensors platform for computers running Windows 7.  It delivers accurate positioning information without requiring any GPS device. Once Geosense application is installed, you can enable the location sensors from Location and Other Sensors in Control Panel.

Once the sensors are enabled, you can use any application that supports geo location sensors to find out your current location. This can be handy when you might require finding out your current address during travelling and/or require searching a nearby spot (e.g. a restaurant). For demonstration purposes, the developers have provided a demo application with Google Maps integration, which displays your current location and address.

Using this demo app, you can also search for places using Google Maps. Similarly, you can track your current location and search for nearby buildings by using other applications, which are compatible Windows 7 location sensors.

Needless to say, GPS must be enabled on your device to let the app send your location coordinates over to the website. Each tracked location can be opened on map using the widely-renowned Google Maps service.

With your device configured, all you need to do is login with PDASpy through their website using your credentials, and start tracking all the details remotely.

A big caveat of using Cell Phone Spy PRO+, despite the fact that it requires password-fed access to its interface, is that it can easily be uninstalled from any device without requiring any authentication from the user (obviously, unless you’ve secured your device using a PIN, pattern, password et al), hence putting into question the app’s reliability and effectiveness.

iOnRoad is an Android app that, through its augmented reality driving assistance, real-time collision detection and automatic audio-visual alert feature, ensures that you always drive safe and stay alert of potential traffic accidents, making it an extremely handy tool for novice drivers. Using iOnRoad is simple. All you need to do is mount your device (in horizontal position) on your car’s dashboard or windshield mount (stand) with its camera lens facing forward. Make sure that iOnRoad is activated on your device with your device’s horizontal and vertical levels (option to check said levels within the app) adjusted to perfection. In case you’re driving your way to some unavoidable danger, the app alerts you through separate audio and video warnings based on its various calculations. The green, yellow and/or red indicators on the vehicles moving ahead of you notify you of headway distance (time to collide) along with alert sounds so that you can adjust your speed accordingly.

For the app to work effectively, make sure that a strong internet connection and GPS is activated on your device. To ensure that you do not have to leave app’s interface to access various phone features such as the dialer, navigation, gallery and music, iOnRoad contains shortcuts to all mentioned applications. The app even lets you change the applications that each of the four shortcuts launch. This can be done from within the app’s settings screen.

Automatic Driving Detection feature of iOnRoad keeps it actively running in the background while you’re busy driving. In this way, the app keeps you ever-alert of potential threats on road in case you’re about to undergo that moment of lapse in concentration.

The app offers ample customization options so that you can adjust the app according to your personal driving preferences. You may toggle various Activation settings such as Automatic driving detection (a handy feature, provided the device is mounted to a windshield mount), Bring iOnRoad to foreground (to automatically display app’s interface when active) and automatically Close iOnRoad when device is unmounted from the windshield mount. You may also adjust separate Minimum Battery Levels to keep the app active when your device is running on battery or when it is connected to the charger.

In addition, you can modify various Display settings such as toggling the Opposite display on/off (flip the app’s display to adjust with left-hand driving). There is also an option to change Temperature scale (units) and Speed units (kph or mph). Tapping on Car information on the settings screen lets you change the information that the app should display. You can select to display gap (in time) between your car and the one just ahead you, your distance from the car and/or your car’s speed.

From the Sounds & Alerts settings menu, you can toggle various settings on/off, such as Activation Sounds (along with an option to play them in full volume) and Headway Distance Monitor (in case you’re driving too close to the vehicle ahead). You can also specify crash alert time for comparatively tighter situations.

The app allows you to toggle Snapshot burst mode on/off which can be availed to take 3 snapshots in a row with just a single tap while driving. All these customization features are there to ensure that once you’re set out on a journey with the app activated, you don’t fall an easy prey to your negligence. Even if you do, iOnRoad won’t!

Senior XDA member, crypted, has developed a GPS optimization scripts that initially improved GPS locking in North America and was later made compatible to support worldwide geographic locations. Majority of the users who have deployed this patch on their HTC devices have managed to get GPS lock within 10 seconds.

On average this patch engages 7 to 9 satellites and some users have also confirmed 11 satellites being locked at once. In order to install / flash this AGPS Patch on your HTC Sensation, Desire HD or inspire 4G, you must be root with ClockworkMod Recovery installed. You can use the search bar on our site to find detailed rooting and ClockworkMod flashing instructions for these devices.

Here are the step by step instructions to download and install AGPS Patch on your HTC Sensation, Desire HD or Inspire 4G:

1. The first step is to download AGPS Patch for your phone [Sensation, Desire HD / Inspire 4G] and save the zip file on your desktop.
2. Once done, connect your phone to the computer, mount SD Card or SD Ext and copy the downloaded file to your SD Card root.
3. After this reboot your phone in ClockworkMod Recovery.
4. Once in the recovery, go to “Mounts and Storage” and Mount /System Partition.
5. After this go to recovery main menu and flash / install the patch using “Flash Zip From SD Card” Option.
6. Once the patch is installed / flashed, reboot your device.

The absence of GPS capability in the WiFi-only iPad was termed a dealbreaker by some when it was released and again when its 2nd generation counterpart hit the market. With either of the two devices, the only time the OS allows you to view your location on a map or, say, geotag a photo is while you’re connected to a WiFi hotspot. Furthermore, location data returned via WiFi triangulation is only as accurate as the number of WiFi access points in range, that is, usually not that accurate. Looking for a workaround? Look no further. If you’re one of those tech enthusiasts who own both a jailbroken iPad and an Android phone, then the following workaround should make your GPS-deprived iPad whole. It involves a Cydia Store application by the name of BTstack GPS and a GPS-over-bluetooth sharing Android app. As of this writing, BTstack only works with select GPS units and, as you will see in the guide that follows, Android phones. The developers behind the app are still working to find a an iPhone-to-iPad GPS forwarding solution.

Following is a step-by-step guide for GPS data forwarding from an Android phone to an iPad.

1. Launch Cydia, search for BTstack GPS and install. To use BTstack GPS with other applications, you will have to purchase the $5 full version. The demo version of the app merely displays your location within the app, allowing you to test your GPS forwarding setup. The app requires iOS 3.0 or higher.

2. Download and install any of the following (free) apps on your Android phone. We tested this setup successfully with the first two.

• ShareGPS
• Bluetooth GPS Output
• Bluetooth GPS

2. Exit Cydia, open the Settings menu and turn Bluetooth off if it is on (BTstack uses its own Bluetooth stack to connect to external GPS devices).

3. Select BTstack from under Extensions and set BTstack as the Active Bluetooth Stack.

4. Launch BTstack GPS.

5. On your Android device, navigate to Settings > Wireless & network settings > Bluetooth settings, turn Bluetooth ON and check Discoverable. You should now see your device in the Devices list within BTstack GPS.

6. Under Bluetooth devices hold down on / select your iPad to pair with it, enter a PIN of your choice in the dialogue box that follows and tap OK.

7. A pairing request should now appear on your iPad. Type the same PIN you entered before and tap OK to confirm.

8. Once both devices are paired, you may launch any one of the aforementioned GPS forwarding apps to begin sharing GPS data with your iPad.

If, for instance, you plan to use Bluetooth GPS Output, launch the app and simply select your phone from the list of devices in BTstack. With ShareGPS, you can establish a connection either by selecting your phone from within BTstack GPS or by selecting your iPad from within ShareGPS (Menu > Connect Bluetooth device).

9. As soon as a connection is established, BTstack GPS displays your location, or rather, the location of your Android phone on a map below additional GPS data.

BTstack GPS remembers the last device you connected to, allowing you quick access to it next time you launch the app.

Many people like adding geographical information to their photos. This includes, precise coordinates including the latitude and longitude of the tagged location (saved as the EXIF data). Several camera manufacturers have started concentrating on providing GPS support. If your camera does not support it or have a bunch of old photos lying around which you would like to manually geotag, then you have come to the right place. Once a local GPS data folder has been specified, GPS data from WINTEC WBT202 or GARMIN GPX devices will be downloaded (provided the program is running and the GPS device is plugged in). If camera and GPS items are synchronized, the GPS coordinates  may easily be added to image(s) by clicking the second menu button from the left. The hack has been posted on XDA forum by a senior member jz3. The hack works on the principle that the GPS server for Google is known to be less accurate as compared to the Nokia GPS server. What we have to do is switch the default Google server to supl.nokia.com. In addition to this, the enforcing of Assisted GPS (AGPS) also helps a lot to improve the initial lock time. However the question remains, how can all this be achieved?

The answer is simple enough. Just follow the easy step by step instructions given below.

1. Your Infuse 4G must be rooted first of all. To get an insight on how that’s done, you can read our article on this topic dealing with the procedure of rooting your device.
2. Download the modified gps.conf file to your SD Card from the given link.
3. Backup the original gps.conf file. For this, go to root explorer and look for system/etc. In this sub-directory you will find the gps.conf file. Copy and save it to any location on the SD Card.
4. Now replace the existing gps.conf file with the downloaded modified one. Simply delete the previous one and paste the new one on the same location in system/etc.
5. Access LBSTestMode and change the mode of operation to MS Based.
6. Staying in LBSTestMode, go to SUPL/CP settings, and set the values as follows: Server:supl.nokia.com, Port:7275, Secure Socket:OFF, AGPS Mode:SUPL
7. Everything done? Reboot your phone, and behold your new and improved GPS. You can test it using any GPS testing app.

The controversy involving the iPhone and anonymous location-data collection has now expanded to the Android and Windows Phone 7 platforms. While the iOS and WP7 dev communities are yet to join the fight for user privacy, Android developers are already on the move. Developed by XDA member mopodo, Location Cache is a free tool for rooted Android devices that not only allows you to view and wipe all cached cell-tower and WiFi hotspot locations but lets you block location caching altogether and unlike the alternative method that involves disabling location collection through wireless networks (Settings > My Location > Use Wireless Networks), the app does so without slowing down location fetching. In addition to the aforementioned features, the app sports the option to export location data to the SD card in the form of a GPX (GPS eXchange) file, which is basically an XML file containing GPS data. You can view exported GPX files later on your Android device using Google’s My Tracks app or, if you’re okay with uploading personal data to the web, in any internet browser using online services the likes of GPS Visualizer.

Tapping the view list option on the app’s homescreen displays detailed information on all cached locations in textual form while the view map option, as the name indicates, overlays all locations on a map.

We tested the empty caches and empty & block caches options without any problems and found the developer’s claims to be accurate. Wiping location caches did not seem to slow down location fetching.

Setting date and time based reminders on mobile devices is old news. If you own an Android device, then with Geo Reminders Lite you can move a step further in utilizing your device to the full. The freeware allows users to add multiple locations, each with its own proximity radius which, unlike that in Imcoming, doesn’t have to be equal to or greater than 1 mile.  The application keeps running in the background, waiting for the device to come within the specified range of a saved location, in the event of which, it alerts the user with a notification. When the device is within range of a particular location, a notification is displayed in the notification bar as well as within the info below said location.

The Lite (free) version will only show the reminders in the notification bar. Future updates will bring reminders via SMS, email and audio, as well as in the form of Facebook updates. When you’re driving to a friend’s house and you want them to know you’re almost there, using your phone to send a text or connect a call becomes an ordeal you would rather avoid. What if your mobile device could automatically send a text message whenever you were within a predefined radius of your friend’s place? It would make your life easier wouldn’t it? Well, if you’re an Android user, you’re in luck for we have just the application for you. And its free.

Imcoming for Android lets you set multiple locations, each with its own proximity radius (least count: 1 mile), entering which makes the application send a predefined SMS alert to a selected group of people from your contacts list. More info after the jump.

The method of adding a location is manual (as of this writing). Selecting the tool on the top-right, locations can be pointed out on Google Maps and subsequently tapped to add a proximity radius and a custom auto-text that will be affiliated with only that location.

Locations may be removed by pressing menu on your device and tapping any of the three options that appear as per requirement.

To remove locations one by one, tap the Delete option to select from a list of all saved location labeled by their affiliated SMS alerts.

The icon that appears at the site of an added location can be tapped to customized the message body of the automatically generated SMS alert. By default, the application adds a greeting along with the address.

After adding at least one location, you may tap the green play button on the right to start the service. Tapping the play button will take you to a list of all contacts stored on your device. Any contacts you select from this list will receive auto-texts for all added locations.

Once that is done, the application continues to run as a background service and provided the GPS remains enabled, keeps sending auto-texts to selected contacts whenever the device comes within the specified ranges of the saved locations, displaying an “SMS sent” notification in your status bar each time.

There are countless free speedometer applications and widgets on the Android Market. Speedy is a similar application that just recently hit the Market bringing with it elements new to the genre. These include selective distance and displacement (shortest distance between to points) measurement in addition to the constantly updated speed, distance, and acceleration meters. So if you’re an Android user who likes to keep tabs on car mileage or a record of the distance traveled during your daily walk, Speedy is a handy tool to have on your device.

Note that in order for this application to work, your GPS and mobile data / Wi-Fi must be enabled and your device must have a satellite line-of-sight (view of the sky). Following are screenshots of the application during a test run done on foot.

The application has a simple, minimalistic interface. At launch, it scans for a GPS signal and on getting a fix on your location, begins to update the speed, distance and acceleration meters. The Trip Meter is disabled on launch and can be enabled by pressing the menu button on your device, tapping Trip Meter and then Start trip meter in the Trip Meter Controls that appear.

The Trip Meter simply measures the distance from the point where the user enables the meter (Set start position) to the one where he disables it (Set end position).

The distance meter, on the other hand, measures the shortest distance (displacement) between said points/GPS coordinates.

The settings menu has some basic options that allow the application to preserve the odometer reading on exit, keep the screen from dimming while it is running, change the orientation of the display and the units of measurement.

The Reset option in the application menu lets you reset of a meter/reading of your choice, or all, to zero.

The GPS receiver of Samsung Captivate is definitely not amongst the device’s best performing components. Many users have had issues with it, and several fixes have been released but those can often be lengthy and complicated processes, like the process we featured earlier on fixing the GPS on Samsung Galaxy S. Thanks to GustavTheLion at XDA-Developers forum, there is now a less cumbersome way available to put the Captivate out of its GPS troubles.

To enable this hack, you must get into LbsTestMode. You can do so by getting an app called ‘Any Cut’ that is available for free in the Android Market. Once you have it installed, here is how to get the GPS fix working:

1. Launch ‘Any Cut’, go to ‘Activities’ and create a shortcut to ‘LbsTestMode’.
2. Select ‘Delete GPS Data’.
3. In “SUPL/CP Settings”, enter the following lines:

Do you use Windows Mobile and are jealous of your iPhone friends using GPS location based services? If you use Yahoo’s Fire Eagle service to share your location with the world, then you have a good chance to show off as well. Hineini is a free app that runs natively on Windows Mobile and allows you to send your location in almost real-time.

All you have to do is to download the app from the link given at the end, install it in Windows Mobile, and login to Yahoo’s Fire Eagle service. That’s all, now your location will be updated periodically depending on the settings you have chosen.

You can also choose to update your location when GPS fails. In this case it will use Cell Towers and estimate your location.

The time intervals to update you location can be set to as low as 1 minute and as high as 60 minutes(1 hour).

You will be able to see your location on the map when the app is running on the foreground. Otherwise it will run in the background updating your location periodically thus preserving the battery life of your mobile.
