In 2009, we reviewed FavBackup, which is a tool for backing up and restoring your web browser settings and other data. Since our last review, FavBackup has undergone a number of updates, and has increased support for a number of new browsers and browser versions. In this post, we will take a look at the updates that FavBackup has undergone, and what new features can users now benefit from.

FavBackup seems to have been keeping abreast with the quick updates of famous browsers like Firefox and Chrome. The tool currently supports old and new versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari. For instance, browser support in FavBackup is present for Chrome version 16 and below, Firefox version 8 and below, Opera version 11.60 and below, as well Internet Explorer 8 and Safari 4.

Since our review, favBackup has added support for backing up Chrome login data, Opera’s typed links data, has resolved Firefox AdBlock backup issues, and fixed support for Firefox user styles backup.

While the latest Favbackup updates have focused on support for Firefox and Chrome, it is unfortunate that support for the latest Safari 5 and Internet Explorer 9 has not been added. During testing, I was able to create the backup file with IE 9, however, the restoration process did not seem to bring back the old data. The Favbackup website currently does not state support for IE 9 and Safari 5. FavBackup works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Some common questions that can stir up a war in the most peaceful of situations are; iPhone or Android? Mac or Windows? Cats or Dogs? Why do these simple and harmless questions cause us to argue as if the life of a loved one depends on us being right and the other person being wrong? Possibly because it is our conviction that we’re using the best product there is. Something very similar happens if you try and tell someone they use an inferior web browser and that they should switch over to a better one aka the one you use. This post discusses what might be going on in a person’s head when they choose to stick to a web browser. People have been known to switch browsers and if you’ve been following recent stats, you’ll know that Chrome has beaten Firefox and that Internet Explorer is losing its user base. The question is what makes a person switch from one browser to another and what earns a browser a user’s loyalty?

Why Did I Abandon My Web Browser?

Broadly speaking, there are two kinds of web surfers in this world, those who use the default web browser that comes with their OS and those who opt for another one from the get go. So what compels someone to ditch the default browser?

The Default Browser is Terrible

Switching from the default browser to another one means you are forgoing an already installed and available program on your OS for something else. It also means that while you might be ready to make the change, if you fail to find another web browser that is better, you are likely to keep using the current one. Your judgment on what a better browser is, will be based on how your old one performed and how the new one is better. Reasons why a browser might suck are;

Lack of extensions and/or lack of good extensions

Slow and laggy, crashes frequently and chews out the sofa leg

It slows up my system by taking too much memory

Switching between tabs and windows is a royal pain

It doesn’t do what all the other browsers can do

It doesn’t render or load Java, Flash, flashy gifs and my Facebook profile as fast as the other browsers

You’ve heard bad things about the default browser and are scared to try it

The Other Browser Is Just Better

Any two web browsers can have more or less the same features and even similar interfaces but that alone will never be the deciding factor when it comes to picking a browser. It comes down to how well it works and how many of its features are actually useful for you. As browsers came and went, each had one specific thing that it did really well and was the main reason why a user preferred to use it. When browser wars were nothing more than a little brawl, Netscape held out against Internet Explorer for as long as it was the most feature rich browser there was. Opera on the other hand, which has been around almost since Netscape’s inception, has held out reasonably well through the browser wars and much of its survival can be attributed to Opera for mobile platforms.

Once Internet Explorer started upping its features, its popularity grew steadily until 2005, Netscape’s share diminished until the browser itself died or rather, it unleashed Firefox. The fact that features are what sells a browser becomes apparent when you look at the growing popularity of Firefox and its extensions. With the development of Firefox (known back then as Phoenix) in 2002 and the debut of Safari in 2003, people had a wider choice in web browsers and features mattered even more. Opera, maintained its share throughout and gained users steadily. From that point forward, browsers have battled it out not only on the feature front but also on interface (a major reason for Chrome’s popularity) and how well they perform their primary function i.e., loading and displaying web pages. The bottom line, the better the features, interface and performance, the more popular a browser will be.

Why Do I Love My Web Browser?

If you get down to it, it is somewhat meaningless to ask why someone changed their web browser; the fact is they’ve changed it and will now take anyone in a fight just to prove it is better.

My Browser Understands Me…

Fast forward to today, browser wars have matured and we’ve all taken sides. The browser war which was primarily fought on features now has a user’s emotional attachment to deal with if it’s going to win anyone over.

Warning: personal experience being related. I tried Chrome because I heard it was faster than Internet Explorer 6. Internet Explorer was the last version that I used of Microsoft’s browser because I was too lazy to upgrade and also because I didn’t think it would ever get better. I found Chrome wasn’t just fast but that it was really really fast. At the same time I fell in love with the Omnibar. Before Chrome, I’d open Google every time I wanted to search something and then type in my search. Tabbed browsing was something that just blew me away. I never wanted either of those things but when I saw them, I realized how inconvenient it was to use Internet Explorer. I never used Firefox, not then and not now, because it came off as unstable (constant crashes) and knowing the Firefox 7 had a bug that made your extensions disappear only makes me think I made the right choice in choosing a browser. Internet Explore has caught up now in most, if not all features, but I am reluctant to give it another chance.

Your favorite browser is your favorite because it does for you what few others have been able to do for you, making another switch means:

Admitting you were using an inferior browser (being wrong on the internet is difficult)

Learning the ropes of the new browser is frustrating, especially if the layout and functionality is very different from your current browser

Customizing the new browser to work for you and finding solutions or a work around to problems you had already resolved in your old browser will take time and effort

Browsers are updated quite frequently to the point that for some like Chrome, Firefox and Opera, version numbers are now less relevant. With updates coming so fast, it is highly likely that the feature you are switching over for will be incorporated in your current browser and the switch will a complete waste

If you use different extensions, you might have to sign up for other services, you might not be able to tweak you mail or keep your bookmarks organized as well. The new browser might not import your preferences from the old one the right way even if you stick to the same extensions and services

I like…

Chrome is by far preferred for its minimalistic and clean look, its speed, faster start up time and the fact that if one window crashes, all others won’t. For the average web surfer, this is a perfectly good reason to use the browser. Developers, on the other hand, will rightly favor Firefox because for years it’s given them excellent support and is still unmatched when it comes to providing a good testing and development environment and those killer extensions in its vast repository. For both Chrome and Firefox, extensions are a huge part of browser loyalty and one great extension is enough to keep you hooked to a browser. Internet Explorer was sadly late on the extension front and suffers to this day because of it. Similarly, Opera users will stick to their beloved browser because of the great desktop to mobile support it provides. The point, there is a reason behind everyone’s loyalty. Safari, while a great browser, might be limited in its users because it does not run as well on a Windows PC (the dominant desktop platform so far) and because the number of Mac users is small compared to Windows users.

What’s wrong with all the other browsers?

They’re ugly? Not really. Other browsers might just be as good as our favorite browser but being ‘just as good’ isn’t going to get you to switch. Just as Google+ being as good as Facebook wasn’t reason enough for people to switch, similarly, if a browser is just as good or slightly better than our favorite, we aren’t going to make the switch. We have grown to love our extension, we love the password manager, we love the sync feature, we love the pop-up blocker, we love the security, there is something I every browser that keeps a user hooked.

Conclusion

Think of moving from one browser to another like getting a puppy for your birthday when you were a kid. You’ve feed it and trained it and it has a special place to sleep on in your bed, you wouldn’t just stop loving it because it’s grown up and not as cute as it used to be? You’ve fallen in love with it over the years and you are now emotionally attached; no starry eyed cat can ever take its place. At AddictiveTips, 8 people use Chrome, 2 use Firefox and one uses Opera. Only one admitted that given undisputed scientific evidence that their old browser was better, they would actually consider giving it a try.

Your old browser is something like a bad ex that made you suffer so much that you’ll never forgive or forget it and you are even less likely to betray your current browser for a third one, you might occasionally cheat but it will be nothing more than just a fling. The question is, what keeps you hooked to your browser? Given undisputed scientific evidence that your another browser is just as good, if not better, than your current one, would you switch? Which browser did you switch from and why?

In the world of marketing, getting your message across effectively is probably the best advertising technique, and brands, organizations, companies etc, employ all possible means to achieve this. Generally, when consumers are continuously reminded of a product/service, chances are high that they’ll remember it more than others. This appears to be the thought behind Brand Thunder’s Engage – a free web app that allows anyone to create a browser theme (currently supporting Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer). Since a browser window is almost always present in front of a user when surfing the web, having your theme splashed across their screens is, arguably, one of the best ways to market yourself. So, if you’re a blogger, service provider, product manufacturer, or would just like to brand yourself, hit the jump and see how Engage can serve you.

The application sports a clean, easy interface that is pretty self-explanatory. You can hit the Get Started button to begin building your theme right away, but we recommend creating an account first, as you’ll need that for saving/downloading and sharing your theme. Account creation requires a valid email address, name and password. Once you’ve verified your account (you will receive a verification email), logging in will take you to your Dashboard, where you can view/manage your existing themes or create new ones.

Hitting Create a new theme will pull up the theme builder interface, containing a browser previewer in the middle, context-sensitive properties dialog to the right, and Assets at the bottom, which include predefined Backgrounds, Logos, Widgets and My Images (for uploading your own items). The browser previewer allows you to visualize how your theme will look on Firefox or IE, changeable using the buttons on top.

You start off by selecting a background for your theme, which can be anything from a simple color to a predefined image or an image of your choice (uploaded through My Images). The Theme Properties dialog on the right lets you provide a name and description for your theme, as well as a color picker with dropper-selection enabled, allowing you to find the exact match that you’re looking for.

This dialog box changes with the item you’ve selected, so if you select an image or logo, options offered change to opacity, locking aspect ratio, defining a target URL (for logos, only), as well as a preview of the image. Background images and logos are both resizable and movable, and you can even mix multiple background images with varying opacity settings for a more complex effect.

Another interesting aspect is the ability to build widgets inside your theme, letting you put either Buttons or an RSS/Atom Reader within the toolbar. These could be anything from a visit us link to affiliate and e-commerce buttons, adding more bucks to your cash-flow, and the RSS aggregator can help generate more visits, since your latest updates will be served to your audience right within the browser, without dependency on any third-party service/application.

Once you’re done creating your theme, and verified that it will, indeed, appear correctly in both supported browsers, hit the Finish button on top right to build and download. While Engage continuously saves your progress as you build, there is also a Save Progress option available to do so manually. A finished theme can either be downloaded/installed right away, published to the Brand Thunder gallery, or shared on social networks and even through email using the Share URL generated. It will also remain available in your Dashboard for future use.

BT Engage is one web app that I found highly useful and practical. It’s easy, it’s slick and best of all, it’s free. The rudimentary AddictiveTips theme that I created for testing can be seen in the first screenshot above, and despite being rather bland, it was functional enough. My only complaint with the app was lack of support for Chrome, but let’s see if the developers pay heed to us on this one. Give it a try, and I’m sure you’ll find it helpful in delivering a more personal experience to your audience, not to mention the increased branding.

As most of our desktop computing devices move from 32 bit towards 64 bit platforms, more and more programs are being made available in both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. While Windows 7 has already had Internet Explorer 9 in both these variants, they were available as separate apps. That changes with Windows 8, as both versions have been consolidated into one version of Internet Explorer 10. For further details on switching between the modes, continue reading.

Most Windows 7 users must be familiar with having both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Internet Explorer 9 installed on their 64-bit computers. For those who haven’t noticed it before or haven’t used 64-bit version of Windows 7, here is how things were.

In Windows 8 however, things are done a little differently with the new Internet Explorer 10 – there are no two separate versions of the browser in the start menu. However, the browser still retains both its 32-bit and 64-bit modes. To choose which mode to use, you will have to take a different approach.

Open Internet Options from the Tools menu of Internet Explorer (the gear icon in top-left) and switch to the Security tab. Under the slider for changing different security settings, you will notice a new check box saying “Enable 64-bit Mode (requires restarting Internet Explorer)”. However, enabling/disabling it has been associated with security zones, just the way the remaining security settings and Protected Mode are. This means you can set 32-bit mode for the Internet zone while using 64-bit mode for your local intranet, or you could use 32-bit mode for trusted sites for maximum compatibility and 64-bit mode for untrusted sites for maximum security.

Once you have chosen your preferred settings for all the security zones, simply restart Internet Explorer. You will now be able to browse the zones in the corresponding 32-bit or 64-bit modes. This new method seems to be a welcome change considering it removes the necessity of having two versions of the same browser installed while still granting access to both versions.

One annoyance which many web developers face while viewing changes from application development IDEs is that development platforms only open or refresh the local webserver (localhost) link without providing any option to automatically update the web document. Since there is no direct way to monitor changes in HTML, PHP, ASPX, CSS document to view the updates and changes as they happen, therefore they have to either refresh the web page manually by hitting F5 to view the changes or use a third-party script to automatically update the page after defined amount of time. ReloadIt is a standalone application for Windows which enables web developers to monitor multiple HTML,PHP, ASPX, CSS, etc, documents to show visual alerts as soon as the change happens. RelaodIt works like Live Reload, a popular web developer tool to view changes in real-time. The downside of the ReloadIt is it only works with Internet Explorer.

Apart from monitoring changes in documents on local webserver, you can add any specific web page to monitor the changes and updates. When it detects an update, it immediately prompts users with links to quickly view the changes and additions. The application works in conjunction with Internet Explorer. Just open the URLs that you want to monitor in Internet Explorer. Once all pages are done loading in the browser, launch ReloadIt and press F5 to fetch all opened links.

When all links are added to the application, you can separately add URLs underneath Refresh Enabled checkbox to monitor the changes in specified web documents. Now enable Refresh Enabled option for URLs and press F12 key to start the monitoring process. When it finds an update, new addition, or change in document, it will prompt you to view the changes.

The Alert button in Status bar shows the total number of alerts it found during the monitoring process. Upon click, it will show all the updated links with time stamps. ReloadIt also lets you bring any selected tab to front, close the tab and manually refresh the tab from web link right-click context menu.

The only drawback we noticed with RelaodIt is that it doesn’t support other widely used web browsers, such as, Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera, etc. For this reason, you need to set Internet Explorer as live preview browser in web application development IDEs to monitor the changes through it. ReloadIt is an open source application that supports both Internet Explorer 8 and Internet Explorer 9.

Download ReloadIt

For now the update is available to developers only and has recently been released to manufacturers. Microsoft announced that Mango will come equipped with 500 new features! That means a lot more new functionality compared to the previous big update (Nodo). The official list of all the changes has not been made public yet and developers are left to discover new features by themselves. However, one feature that doesn’t require much thorough searching is the availability of multiple tabs in the new OS. It is there, and it looks awesomely cool!

With Mango, you can now manage as many tabs as you want in Internet Explorer with just a simple procedure. Open the tabs menu and you will see all the entries of your previous tabs present there. Though if you find the official method a bit less efficient, you can simply use the hardware Back button to use the task switcher (much like the Android one). Once in the internet browser, with multiple tabs opened, press and hold the Back button for a few seconds. This will automatically bring the tabs list in front of you. Just tap the one you want to navigate to and it will open (that too in landscape view, which is another Mango improvement).

Some basic features like creating new tabs have remained the same and you have to go to the bottom menu of the current page in Internet Explorer, to perform these tasks.

Due to this essential role of search engines, many web browsers come integrated with search engines. You simply have to go to your browser’s address bar and key in any word you want to search. This is a time-efficient tool as you don’t have to go all the way to the search engine’s website and search from there. Being a pretty slick OS, Windows Phone 7 uses Internet Explorer as its default web browser and Bing search comes integrated with it. But if you are more of a Google or Yahoo fan, you can change this setting using a little registry tweaking.

Disclaimer: Please follow this guide at your own risk. AddictiveTips will not be liable if your device gets damaged or bricked during the process.

Requirements:

You will need to have a registry editor. TouchXplorer will do fine. For download and details read our guide on registry editors.

For registry access you will need to have a developer unlocked or jailbroken device. Here’s how you can jailbreak your WP7.

Instructions:

Run the registry editor.

In the path field, enter the following
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes

This will lead you to a value named Default Scope. Remove Bing from there and put in the name of the search engine of your choice. This is basically the tag which will be used for searches.

For Yahoo, in the path field, enter
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\Yahoo]
and then change the displayed URL to
“URL”=http://de.search.yahoo.com/search?p={searchTerms}

To choose Google as your search Engine, use this
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\Google]
and set the URL to
“URL”=http://www.google.com/m?hl=en&amp;gl=us&amp;client=ms-hms-tmobile-us&amp;q={searchTerms}

So in this manner, using your registry values, you can change the default search engine of Internet explorer in your WP7 phone.

In this age of busy and fast living, very few people have got the time to sit in front of a TV and listen to the latest news to keep themselves up to date with happenings around the world. However there is a lot you can achieve if you have a smartphone, and getting in touch with the world is certainly one such thing. There is quite a fair number of news-related apps for even a young and budding platform like Windows Phone 7. Now which news service or app you should choose for your everyday use, that’s the important question. BBC is a household name all across the globe and is almost synonymous with the word “News” in some parts of the world. BBC News Mobile is a third party client of BBC news for WP7 and has got some pretty cool features.

The app comes with a clean, fast interface and the homepage is populated with the latest news stories currently on the BBC website. These stories are shown on the basis of the number of views they have got, bringing the most popular news items to your home screen. Simply tap the icon of the piece you are interested in, and the full story will be displayed.

The sync button loads any news that might have just arrived. The app lets you read a story from within the app, or if you want, just tap the Internet Explorer icon at the bottom of the screen and you will be directed to the webpage where the item is present. If you want, there are awesome Live Tile notifications that can be activated in the settings menu. Also, in the same menu you can subscribe to Breaking News alerts, which notify you of any important news on the go.

The customizability that the Feeds page provides is the best feature in the app. Just choose the categories you are really interested in and you will be provided with news pertaining to those fields only, without any useless (for you at least) information cluttering your app’s feed area. So after doing this, if you really like any particular news article, just hit the share button and you can send the article to anyone via SMS, E-Mail or Facebook!

The app is free to download, and comes with live tile support, so head over to its Marketplace page via the link provided below and grab it!

By default Internet Explorer is the browser used in WP7 phones, and it doesn’t allow you to sync the bookmarks from your PC to your phone. Do you wish that you had the ability to import all the bookmarks from your PC to the WP7 device you are using and vice versa? It is possible, and it’s simple!

Instructions:

Go to this download link from your PC and grab Opera.

Install the recently downloaded browser but without importing any bookmarks.

Access the Bookmark Files menu by navigating to “Menu” and then “Bookmarks”.

In the files menu choose the option to import files from the browser you are currently using on your desktop.

Now go to “Synchronize Opera” located in the Menu. Choose the option “Enable Synchronization”.

This will give you a new dialog box. Just tick the first option (i.e. Bookmarks) and leave the rest as it is before you hit Next.

Download the app named “Opera Link” from the download link given below, and get it running on your phone.

In the app, choose “Forever” as your permission option.

The app will now show you all the bookmarks you have on your PC. Simply tap a bookmark to open it with your default WP7 browser.

FileServe Manager is a free download management application which is designed to optimize your system resources and to provide you with accelerated download speed. It is much similar to the widely used Orbit downloader and supports downloading files from Windows clipboard, resumption of broken downloads, provision for managing downloads by means of adjusting speed limit, and download scheduling.

FileServe Manager can also be integrated into both Chrome and Internet Explorer, letting you download files directly from the web without having to copy and paste source URL to begin downloading process. Unlike Orbit, it automatically moves downloads into convenient categories according to file types. You will, for instance, be able access all the downloaded apps, photos, and audio files from Software, Picture, and Music categories. Other than serving as a download manager, it also has an uploading utility to instantly save and access your files to and from the cloud. If you have your download URLs stored in a text file, you can append them in its Batch download window to start downloading all the items in one go.

To get started, click Add button, enter a URL, and click OK to quickly initiate the downloading process. However, the advance download settings are also available here. You can set a port, login credentials (if required for downloading file in question), specify maximum threads, and download directory before starting the download process.

The downloaded file is automatically sent to appropriate category based on the file extension for easy identification and sorting of downloaded files. You can use the buttons on the toolbar to add, remove, start, stop and adjust priority of the files being downloaded.

A system tray message alerts you when a file download is completed. You can also perform downloading tasks and access Options from the system tray context menu.

The General tab allows starting FileServe at system startup, whereas, the Connections tab can be used to set the number of threads per download, retires per download, HTTP and FTP connection timeout and pause duration vetween reconnects. Traffic restrictions can be imposed by specifying a maximum bandwidth limit.

Similarly, you can set a maximum number of simultaneous downloads, default directory and auto rename downloaded files from the Downloads tab. If you have a FileServe account, you can use the Host account tab to login to FileServe for performing downloading tasks. Unfortunately, FileServe only provides integration for Chrome and Internet Explorer which can be enabled from the Integration tab.

You can use the Scheduler tab to set downloading schedules and auto shutdown or hibernation after completion for downloads. The schedule can be set according to a specified time, date, and day of the week to initiate automatically.

FileServe can also be used for uploading large files. Just click on Account option from left side menu, select an upload file and click Upload. The file will be saved to the cloud.

When you right-click on a download link, an option enables you to download the file using FileServe manager. Unfortunately, the supported Browsers only include Chrome and Internet Explore and do not include Firefox or Opera.

FileServe is quite a comprehensive download manager, however, it is worth mentioing here that it displays some unwanted ads for signing up for a Premium FileServe account, which can be a bit irritating. These ads are mainly displayed from the Account tab. The premium account enables users to download unlimited files, upto 2 GB file uploads and unlimited storage. The packages begin from $9.99-$99.99 depending upon the package type. FileServe works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

If your PC gets infected with malwares, spywares, and phishing scripts even in the presence of configured anti-virus internet security components, you should deploy an additional security layer for your web browsers to ensure system stability. Since it’s not recommended to install more than one anti-malware software to protect system from malware, spyware, and phishing infested codes, you must use a dedicated security tool which looks for viruses, malwares, spywares, and security related vulnerabilities found in web pages. Similar to previously featured – TrafficeLight, G Data CloudSecurity is another web security tool which integrates into Firefox and Internet Explorer to protect you from malicious scripts. Before going into details. it’s worth mentioning here that it doesn’t erupt any sort of virus detection conflicts with other installed anti-virus suites nor does it disable any web-security functions of anti-phishing / anti-malware components of anti-virus.

G Data CloudSecurity doesn’t block the compromised sites right away. When it detects any malicious code or spying attempt from a web server, it will immediately prompt user to either continue browsing or blacklist the web page in question.

After you allow G Data CloudSecurity integration in Internet Explorer, you can access options from add-on bar. If for some reason, it fails to detect any web page with malicious code, click Report suspicious site to block the all similar web pages.

G Data CloudSecurity Pro costs $39.95 which offers some extra security layers to protect your system from viruses and malwares. However, the free version is enough to detect the all the known types of phishing attempts, malwares, spywares and the like.

As many of you may already know that apart from speed and performance improvements, Internet Explorer 9 also focuses on making full use of Windows 7 Jumplist. IE 9 defines the website pinning in Windows 7 super bar in a whole different way, allowing you to gain control over every little feature related with pinned applications, like, Jumplist static and dynamic items, Thumbnail live Preview, Taskbar notifications, and so on. Build My Pinned Site is an web service to incorporate all features of Windows 7 pinned application into your website, so your readers / visitors can engage into defined activities and check updates of your websites without having to manually find them from your website.

For instance, you want to grow people interest in your online shop – shopping cart. It’d be rather great to bring products and services related hot updates and best deals into Jumplist dynamic section, so users can easily view them and directly open links from Jumplist. You can also create static elements of a shopping cart, i.e product/service categories, and add them into Jumplist, letting user easily open the required category right from Jumplist rather than from shopping cart main menu. Similarly, each feature can be utilized in such a way that users eventually start taking maximum benefit out of pinned website on their taskbar.

So how does Build My Pinned Site help webmasters? The process becomes rather simple once you know how and where to embed the code. The developer elaborates the procedure of incorporating all the features in detail. The integrated code generators generate the user customized code for each pinned website function.

In 5 simple steps, you can insert all features in your website right from Jumplist items and thumbnail dynamic preview, to notifications. Let’s take a look at the first step – Create a hi-res favicon. It’s a drawing panel where you can either draw a favicon from scratch or import favicon from external source. Underneath drawing panel, it generates code for inserted favicon and tells you how to embed generated code in your main index/master page.

You must read the instructions listed with each step. The Get the Code link opens the code generator, showing customized feature code for your website. The steps beneath it defines how to customize the code according to your website requirements.

Below you can see Rotten Tomatoes pinned website Jumplist items and Thumbnail Cache Preview.

Are you hanging on to Internet Explorer 9 and badly need an efficient spell checker to identify and correct spelling mistakes? Today, we have an awesome spell check extension for Internet Explorer, called Speckie. It highlights mistakes in real time and suggests you a list of corrections. The extension allows customizing numerous spell check related settings whilst supporting multiple dictionaries. You can alternatively replace the squiggly line that underlines the incorrect words with not only customized highlighting colors but fonts as well. Apart from this, you can switch between 4 default mistake tag styles, ranging from highlight, single, thick-dash, and wave.

The noteworthy part is that Speckie supports adding dictionaries. If you want to, lets say, include German dictionary, just head over to Speckie product page and download it. Once downloaded, you can either replace the default English dictionary or add it in the list.

You can check out the suggested corrections for spelling mistakes from right-click context menu (see screenshot below).

Speckie settings can be accessed from either right-click menu or Settings –> Manage add-ons. By default, it doesn’t check spelling mistakes in single line text fields, however, if you want to check mistakes in, for instance, websites search field, enable it from Spell Check section. The Tag Properties contains all the supported word highlighting styles with option to customize each style.

Underneath Tag Properties, you can add more dictionaries and replace existing one. Check out a list of available dictionaries here. Speckie is available for both 32-bit and 64-bit IE editions.

Since every browser renders web page in a different way, it becomes necessary to change the outlook of web elements in websites in order to make them appear properly on all the widely known browsers. Amongst the list of famous browsers, Internet Explorer popularity is steeping high day by day with IE 9,which can make full use of several Windows 7 UI functions, including Jumplist. To make your website use Windows 7 and IE 9 features up to full potential, try out IE9 Creator. It is a small tool which generates code snippet for creating a website with IE 9 features. It takes only basic set of information, like, Website name, Tooltip, Start URL and importantly Window Size (Width and Height) to enclose the provided info into your website header meta tags.

Once generated, all you need is to copy the snippet and past it underneath the <head> tag of your website master/index page. The application is in beta testing phase, hence others features, including Jumplist support, are not included yet. Hopefully, we will able to see jumplist support with other essential Windows 7 UI features in next iteration.

Keeping track of changes to news feeds, social networking accounts, weather reports and your favorite websites can be a quite difficult as the changes that occur can be numerous and hard to differentiate from previously viewed online content. Diff-IE is an experimental Internet Explorer extension that allows users to keep track of such changes by highlighting the differences that occur to a websites.

In todays time of cutting edge technology, news and blogs are updated with lightening fast speed. Social networking websites are also more robust in providing users with options to interact with friends and family with many simplified methods. Tracking such changes with with accuracy requires a complementary source that works with the same velocity as the changes that occur to the website. Diff-IE enables users to view and compare these changes with previously cached versions of the webpage.

Once Installed, this extension can creates a tool bar on top of the address bar. From here users can modify the settings of the extension according to their requirements.

By clicking on the settings button, users can configure caching options, change the color of the highlighted content and ignore sites from being cached. Enabling caching of pages allows the user to compare images of previously stored pages with the recent changes that occur on a webpage. The user can chose to save some parts or the entire page according to their liking. You can also configure the quality of the image that will be saved for comparison from the general tab in settings. Along with, changing the highlight color that displays the new changes to a webpage and select a threshold above which changes are not highlighted on a website.

The ignore sites tab enables users to add those websites to this list that they do not wish to track changes for. This way users can add exceptions to this extension for specified websites.

The cache tab enables users to view the saved pages and select the number of versions that they wish to store per page. It also displays the cache size on the hard disk and provides user the option to delete the saved data when Internet Explorer history is deleted. This can be done by checking the “clear cache when IE history is deleted” option. Users can also remove selected or all saved pages from this tab.

After you have configured settings and enabled caching you can view, track and compare the changes made to webpages when you visit them. All changes can be differentiated by the highlighted text.

The difference in the webpage can be tracked by clicking on the show/hide diff button from the Diff-IE toolbar. This enables the user to view the page without the highlighted changes. Clicking the button again returns the highlighted text. To ignore any pages from showing the difference in content, users can click on the “Ignore This Website Button” from the toolbar and also load the selected page version in a new tab by clicking on “Load the selected Page Button” (green arrow button).

A side by side comparison can also be achieved by clicking on the Side-By-Side Compare button from the Diff-IE toolbar (the button that displays the magnifying glass). Clicking on this button displays a comparison of the new and cached page in a new window.

Diff-IE is a unique and effective add-on for tracking changes to webpages, however, I do believe that if a user does not wish to track several websites than it can be quite laborious to add several websites to the ignore list and to click on the “Show/Hide Diff’ button to view the pages without the highlighted text. This extension works with Internet Explorer 7, 8 and 9 (beta).

If you’ve had the experience of working in a dual monitor environment, you may have come across the fact that you cannot play a flash video in full screen on the second monitor and perform some other task at the same time. Supposing that one of your monitors is playing a flash video in full screen mode, as soon as you perform some other activity on the second monitor you’ll notice that the full screen mode is gone. Apparently, this is one of the limitations of the flash plugin for almost all modern browsers.

IgnoFlash is a patch for browsers that allows a flash video to run full screen in a dual monitor setup even when focus is lost from the video. Full screen mode can still be get rid of through conventional methods (like the Escape key), but mouse clicks won’t affect it.

To use the patch, unzip the downloaded file, close all browser windows, run the executable and make sure that the correct DLL file is selected for your current browser (it automatically selected the right one for me). Depending on browser, you will either have to select ActiveX or Netscape modes, which define how the flash plugin interacts with the browser window. Hit apply when done, and that’s all there is to it. Enjoy your flash videos in full screen while continuing work.

IgnoFlash has been tested with Opera, Firefox and Internet Explorer 8. It is cross platform and cross architecture, that is, for Windows, Mac and Linux (both 32- and 64-bits are supported).

Download IgnoFlash

Twitter is one of the best information sharing portals, there is no argument to that. It is the platform that actually brought the concept of micro-blogging into the mainframe. It is also one of the best means to promote your website and to find out about other trends, what people like and dislike. Independent Twitter applications like TweetDeck, Seesmic Desktop, and various others have also made Twitter indispensible to those seeking new information.

TicknTalk is a browser sidebar companion currently for Firefox and Internet Explorer only. It uses your Twitter account to bring the latest and hottest links right to your browser, including useful information about the website that you’re browsing. You can discover the most popular links within a website, and make your own contribution by ‘ticking’ anything that you deem share-worthy. You can observe trends on Twitter relating to a particular page or in general, and also find people with similar browsing habits and interests as yourself.

When the add-on is installed, you’ll need to login with your Twitter account for a personalized experience. The sidebar on default view displays Top links, which you can customize on the basis of language preference. These are the links that have been tweeted about the most, and hence become popular.

Once you’ve logged in, you get your own timeline underneath the top links box. You can customize timeline view into all your tweets, direct messages, mentions, and so on.

Whatever page you’re browsing, you can view its Twitter stats through the ‘Top Links on….’ box. As you can see the screenshot below shows top links for AddictiveTips. You can also tick a page that you like through the Tweet about this page box.

If you click on the green button that shows the number of ticks about a page, you can actually see what those ticks say, as shown in the screenshot below. You can also see your own profile next to the home button on top.

TicknTalk is a useful add-on for Firefox and Internet Explorer, and serves to further elaborate Twitter’s power as an information sharing medium. It is under development for Google Chrome and Safari as well. Our testing was done with Firefox 3.6.11

BakRex Internet Explorer Backup is a complete backup and restore tool for Internet Explorer versions 6.0 to 9.0. It can backup favorites, proxy & connection settings, security zones, user customizations, cookies, history, dialup accounts (people still use dialup?), and form autocomplete entries.

A wizard will help you backup, restore, rollback, or schedule backup in just three steps. In the first step select what you would like to do, in the second step select the folder where you want to save IE settings, use compression, and password protect the backup archive, finally in the third step select the settings and data to backup. If you want to backup all the settings and data, click Internet Explorer (also selected by default) and hit Next.

Note: With Scheduled backup feature you can backup all your data daily, weekly, or monthly.

It is a brilliant tool which helps in migrating of settings and data from one operating system to another. Not only can it backup and restore from a single version but you can also backup Internet Explorer 8 and restore all settings/data in Internet Explorer 9.

It works on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003/2008 Server, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

The latest version of both Firefox and Chrome now support HTML 5 video tags, Microsoft however is reluctant to move to HTML 5. IE user Chistian Adam has released the latest version of Xiph.org Ogg Codecs that adds basic HTML 5 video tag support to Internet Explorer.

It is just a technical preview since it only supports basic playback as for now, with no controls, interfaces, and seeking in this version. Nevertheless, it is a giant leap forward and shows that Internet Explorer could handle HTML 5 just fine if Microsoft actually tried to implement it officially.

Note that you need to add xmlns=”http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml/video” attribute to enable <video> tag in Internet Explorer. Both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the setup are available.

You can watch the screencast showing HTML 5 in action over at Chistian Adam’s blog.

If you often need to check different web applications for web browser compatibility, then Internet Explorer Collection will come in real handy for such testing. It lets you run multiple versions of IE on the same system simultaneously.

It supports all IE versions from 1 to 8, simply download and run its installer, during the installation process, it will let you select the versions that you wish to install. Choose the versions as per your requirement and then click Next to resume with the installation.

Once completed, you will see all the selected versions installed, you can launch any version from Start > All Programs > Internet Explorer Collection option. I installed two versions and they are available under my Windows 7 Start menu.

Well nobody uses IE 5 or browsers before that but since IE 6 is not dying yet, you can use this tool to test any design on IE6 and IE7.

Download Internet Explorer Collection

It works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. Also have a look at IE Tester, which is a simple app with multiple versions of Internet Explorer. Enjoy!

But if you are using some other browsers, such as, Firefox or Chrome due to their security and speed, then you might like to disable Internet Explorer 8 to conserve system resources.

Disabling IE8 is very simple, first of all click Start, type Windows features on or off and hit Enter, the Windows Features dialogue box will be displayed. Once the Windows Features dialogue box is populated, you will be able to easily locate the Internet Explorer 8 option, uncheck it and click OK, it will take some time to apply the changes.

Once done, reboot your system and you will no longer see Internet Explorer. Enjoy!

If you are looking for a way to restrict the use of internet on your computer, then Internet Explorer 8 can really be helpful in this regard. Now you can easily password protect internet explorer so only the person who knows the password will be able to use the internet on your computer.

Ofcourse anyone who wants to access the Internet can install some other browser, but in most cases you will need to download the other browser through IE and if it is locked then there is no other way.

First of all launch the Internet Explorer and navigate to Tools > Internet Options. Now in the Internet Options window, go to Content tab and under the Content Advisor category click the Enable button.

It will now ask you to set the supervisor password, this password will be required to use the internet via Internet Explorer 8.

Click OK and restart the IE for the changes to take effect successfully. Now whenever someone will try to access any website from this computer, IE will ask him/her to enter the supervisor password.

RunRes is a free tool for Windows that can launch an application in any resolution you define. Mostly the applications in question can be any browser or software that you commonly use. Suppose you are a web developer and want the browser to always open in 1024×768 resolution for testing purpose. In such situations you can define the size in the program and it will always open it in that specific resolution.

To add a new application, click Add, choose the program and hit OK. Once the app has been added, drag the slider to define the resolution, select the program from the list, and click Run.

Both Firefox and Internet Explorer are added by default, but you can add other browsers and applications too. In my testing both both Internet Explorer and Firefox were launched successfully, but had no luck in running other apps in a specific resolution.. You can give it a try and let me know if it works great on your side.

Download Run Res

It works on all versions of Windows including the latest Windows 7. Enjoy!

Do you switch between different browsers for daily activities when some of the sites don’t work properly in particular browser? Then you should consider using Lunascape 5.0(currently in Alpha version) which lets you integrate Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome into one powerful browser. With Lunascape you will have a choice of selecting the rendering engine for various incompatible websites to the other browser which makes switching between browser less tedious. It optimizes the most of the rendering engine that benefits the end user.

One of the best features of Lunascape is that it supports most of the common Internet Explorer add-ons and toolbars and is optimized with enhanced anti-crash technology which is based on JavaScript Execution for best possible performance.

The three rendering engines of all the browsers namely Gecko, WebKit and Trident can be selected by the users weather they open a new tab or a new window. The rendering engine can be changed even in the middle of the browsing session by right clicking on the tab easily.

This browser may come especially useful for web developers when they check the web content for compatibility issues with various rendering engines. This browser will keep on improving because its still in its alpha version but its worth a try if you are annoyed by switching between different browsers.

Got some opinion? Don’t forget to share it with us. Enjoy!
