Mac’s native media player, QuickTime Player, has a multitude of features, allowing you to do just about everything, from screencasting to publishing your videos directly to YouTube or Vimeo. While the application is rich in functionality, not everyone uses all those functions, and if you just want to watch a couple of music videos, tutorials or play songs from your library, a much lighter music player like MPlayerX might be more suitable. This Mac app does what you would expect of a media player; it plays audio and video files of practically every format (even Flash), but additionally remembers the last position a file was played at and reopens them at it. It can be used to stream live broadcasts, and unlike QuickTime Player, you can drag & drop a file onto an already open window to play it.

The app’s interface is simple, and media controls appear when you mouse over the app window. You can increase or decrease the player’s volume by scrolling the mouse wheel. A button on the top right corner of the app, with two arrows pointing in opposite directions, allows you to toggle between full screen and normal screen view.

To add and view a live stream using the app, go to File and select Open from URL…. Paste the stream’s URL and click OK, and the app will start streaming the video.

To adjust sound and video quality, go to Windows and select the Video Tuner and Equalizer options. Adjust the audio and video settings from the windows that open.

To quickly change which file is being played, drag & drop the file on to the app’s window. The app will remember the point where the current file was stopped, and will play the new one. When you play the first file again, it will resume from where you left it off.

MPlayerX isn’t a high end media player that you would use for video editing or broadcasting, but it is a good option if you want to play Flash videos and need a lightweight application for playing music.

When it comes to media players, the market is so saturated that only a handful brand names such as VLC Media Player, GOM Player, Classic Player, MPlayer and native Windows Media Player are considered as the market leaders, and others barely stand a chance of attracting users. This, however, does not necessarily mean that other media players do not have what it takes to be the best.

VSO Media Player is a lightweight HD media player that not only supports a wide array of audio and video formats, but also enables direct playback from ISO, DVD and AVCHD files. Since playing movies directly from the DVD ROM can reduce it’s life, therefore many people have to rip or copy their DVDs to play them from local drive. You can open media files, load a playlist, video, audio, subtitles, switch to full screen mode and access VSO settings from the Menu button on the main interface, or by clicking the (+) icon.

Playlists can be either loaded from an .M3U file, or created by simply dragging and dropping audio/video files onto the VSO player interface. You can shuffle, save, add and repeat tracks to the playlist from the toolbar located at the bottom of the interface (within Playlist section).

The Settings menu provides a number of tabs for configuring VSO player options, including manual control of playlist menu, automatic launch of VSO Player in full screen mode (from Settings tab),  the option to associate media files with VSO Player (File Associations tab) and interface language selection (Language tab). Another good feature of VSO player is that it supports hardware acceleration. The Advanced tab provides the option to enable experimental hardware acceleration for nVidia graphic cards, enable multi-processor support and to use GDI to acquire better graphic quality than Direct3D.

VSO Media Player, despite its rich feature options, does have some issues. If you have GDI (Graphics Device interface) enabled (from Settings -> Advanced tab), it is likely that you may experience application crashes. It works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Noow is a feature rich application that serves as an HD media player, torrent downloader, podcast client and a multimedia file manager. You can integrate any web service which offers audio, video or torrent downloading capability to Noow interface. For example, you can integrate MegaVideo by simply adding its URL to Noow sources and browse through the website via Noow. When a video is played from a source website, a option to download to your local drive automatically appears. Similarly, you can add podcast feeds and torrent websites, browse through them and download content. Although Noow is an HD media player, it plays back even lower quality videos quite well.

During installation, you are provided with an option to select a directory containing your local media files. The audio and video files from a selected directory automatically get organized within Noow.

Noow comes with some pre-installed sources for audio, video and torrent websites, including YouTube, Hulu, PBS, YouTorrent and ClearBits. You are free to add other websites from the Sources section, for example, you can add MegaVideo, Vimeo, Iso Hunt etc simply by entering their URLs.

Once a web service is added as a Source, you can browse through the website. When a video or audio track is streamed, you are automatically provided the option to download it via Noow.

Similarly, you can download a torrent files by adding and browsing through source websites.

All downloaded files can be viewed and managed from Downloads.

Noow can also convert audio and video files to popular mobile formats, and contains presets for some popular devices including, Behold II, Cliq/DEXT, G2, Epic, galaxy tab, Hero, Magic, nexus, iPad, iPhone, iPod, etc.

By default, Noow comes with a number of podcasts including TED, Lifehacker, This American and VODOD. Adding new podcasts and updating existing ones can be done from Sidebar drop down menu. The section below podcasts allows creating custom audio and video playlists.

Noow is indeed a comprehensive multimedia application which provides robust functionality for managing, downloading and viewing audio, video  and torrent files. The best part of this application is integrating virtually any audio, video and torrent-based web service with Noow.

Note: It’s worth mentioning here that this application is ad-supported, in that it offers to change the browsers homepage and default search engine. Totem is a GStreamer based media player for the Gnome desktop and comes pre-installed with Ubuntu. One of the features that Totem has lacked since the inception of the Unity launcher is a quicklist. As we all know quicklists provide easy access to major features of an application which is integrated with the Unity launcher. Not having a Unity quicklist has been bit of a short coming for Totem. However, that has now changed. A third-part developer has created a Unity quicklist for Totem which provides Play/Pause, Next, Previous, Volume Up, Volume Down and Mute options. This option makes it handy to run Totem functions right from the Unity Launcher by right-clicking on the Totem icon.

To get started, download The Quicklist from the download link given at the end of this post and extract the contents of the archive. Once done, double click on the SH file and select Run in Terminal option.

This will add a Unity launcher quicklist for the Totem player. In other words, you can right click on the Totem icon from within the Unity launcher to perform functions such as Play/Pause, Volume Control, etc.

We tested this quicklist in Ubuntu 11.10 beta and it is also compatible with previous Ubuntu versions such as Ubuntu 11.04.

If you are tired of continuously porting your favorite media files to your Android device from your computer or if your SD card cannot stand any more heavy media files, then may be it’s time to try Emit, a real-time media encoder and streamer that allows you to play media directly from your computer onto you Android device over WiFi. Emit Desktop Application is available for Windows, Linux and Mac and can be downloaded from developer’s website (link provided at the end). Once installed, users can add/remove directories to/from the server, affiliate their iTunes Library with the server and specify the Encode Folder from where they can download encoded media to their device. The Server Running option must be ‘checked’ on the server to allow access. The server application was tested without problems on Windows7 while the app was tested successfully on our HTC Desire and Desire Z.  The mechanism was put to test with several audio and video file formats and the streaming/encoding was as smooth as it gets.

Needless to say, the speed of streaming may vary with the strength of the WiFi connection. All in all, Emit for Android brings a whole new experience of remotely playing media files from your computer onto your device that makes the years-old method of copy/pasting data in and out of your computer look like a thing of the past. The free version of the app contains ads. If you don’t want ads appearing in the top-right corner of the screen during video playback, you’ll have to purchase the paid version for a meager price of $2.50. Many media players have built-in option to register hotkey combinations, so that you can quickly use their provided functions and features, such as, play/pause media playback, shuffle playlist, sort playlist items, jump to next/previous track, etc, but it becomes quite tiring to specify shortcut keys in each media player for performing more or less same type of actions, such as, play, pause, stop, etc.

MediaKeys offers a one-stop solution by allowing you to register global hotkeys for a range of media applications, including, Windows Media Player, Winamp, iTunes, foobar2000, and MediaMonkey. You can control these media players with same set of registered hotkey combinations. You switch between supported media players from the system tray in order to use specified shortcut keys. Apart from controlling media playback, you can also set global mouse click behavior and keyboard numpad + / – keys to control volume across all the media players.

After launching the application, right-click its system tray icon and select Edit Settings. From Controls window, select media program from the list and click create hotkeys.

Now register hotkeys for play/pause media player playback, skip forward key and back key. Once shortcut keys are defined, click Save on main settings window. In similar way, you can associate shortcut keys for other supported media applications.

After you’ve registered hotkeys for your favorite media player(s), head over to Volume tab to set mouse click-scroll behavior and enable numpad + key for controlling volume. Now, click Save followed by Close.

When you want to play media file, for instance, in Windows Media Player, just bring up MediaKeys editing window again to select Windows Media Player from the list in order to use defined global hotkeys with Windows Media Player. During testing, we found it to be working fine with all supported applications, however, developer needs to improve generic media player feature to control other non-listed media players.

For long I have relied on the open source VLC and the Windows 7 default Windows Media Player 11. It is not often that we come across a media player so comprehensive that it can match the quality of such robust players. UMPlayer or Universal Media player is a cross platform open source media player that can fulfill all your needs with over 270 built-in Audio and Video codecs.

It uses the famous Mplayer engine with more integrated features. It can play almost any media format with support for 270 Audio and Video codecs. These include widely used  codecs such as AAC, AC3, ASF, AVI, DIVX, FLV, H.263, Matroska, MOV, MP3, MP4, MPEG, OGG, QT, RealMedia, VOB, Vorbis, WAV, WMA, WMV, XVID as well as audio support for  CDs, DVDs, (S)VCDs, as well as TV / Radio cards, SHOUTcast Radio streams. Windows Media Player 12, despite its excellent features, provides very few customization options. The only changes that you can make to its visual appearance are perhaps the available Media Player skins. WMP12 Library Background Changer is a portable application that allows changing library background images of Windows Media Player 12. An earlier version of this application was released some time back which merely allowed switching between 5 different backgrounds. However, in the newly released version, you can make any image as your Media Player’s library background.

There are two ways by which you can change the WMP12 library background image. The first is to launch WMP12 Library Background Changer and choose an image from the 5 available options or click on no image to leave the background image blank. This is the option that was available in the old version as well.

Clicking on Apply will switch your media player’s library image with the selected image (among the five options). The Restore button can be used to switch back to the default background skin.

On the contrary, if you would like to add a custom image as your WMP12 library background, change your wallpaper to the desired image and click “Replace With Wallpaper”. This will switch the current library background with your wallpaper. Changing the desktop wallpaper again will not affect your library skin, unless WMP12 Library Background Changer is used to change the background image again.

This way you can give your WMP12 library a custom background image. If the changes are applied when Windows Media Player is running, then simply restart WMP12 for the changes to take effect.

This application works only with the latest Windows Media Player 12.

yTunes is an online service that plays YouTube videos in an iTunes like interface. On the yTunes homepage, videos can be sorted by most recent, most popular, most discussed, top favorites and other categories. Greenfish Subtitle Player is a portable subtitle player which can only play SRT files, allowing you to overlay subtitles on any streaming movie. Since the interface is partially transparent and offers extensibility, it can be moved over any streaming movie being played online. Useful when watching movies online that are in foreign language and do not include subtitles.

As we all know that many streaming videos doesn’t come with hard-coded subtitles and apparently there is no direct way to include the subtitle file, this tool enables user to view subtitles on the fly. All that is required is to specify the subtitle file (SRT), it will automatically start playing the subtitle file. Now drag it over the streaming player or any video player. The navigation controls will let you sync subtitles with video. Unfortunately there is no built-in mechanism deployed for video synchronization, so you’ve got to sync it manually.

The application is small (11 KB) and works as intented. It runs on all versions of Windows, testing was done on Windows 7 x86 system.

Kantaris is a new media player developed by Christofer Persson, a computer science student at Lund University. It is based on the code derived from VideoLAN Media Player (VLC Player) and Bass Audio Library. The user interface looks quite different from the official VLC Player and is more similar to that of Windows Media Player. Since it is based on VLC Player, it can handle any media file thrown at it and the sound quality is great (thanks to Bass Audio Library).

On the main interface, you will find four main tabs, Playback, Last.fm Radio, Movie Trailers, and Video Library (which is actually both video and audio library). Just like Windows Media Player, you will find the recently playing media list on the right sidebar.

Both video and audio cover arts are downloaded and displayed in the video library tab where you can scroll to navigate between various media files seamlessly.

During audio playback, it will also show all the relevant options and controls along with CD cover art and embedded information. The visualizations can also be changed.

When playing video, the right-click menu offers all the useful options like playing DVD, streaming media, configuring audio properties, subtitles-specific settings and syncing options, etc.

One useful feature is that it uses OpenSubtitles.org to automatically find subtitles for the currently playing video. Users can also sync subtitles with the video, just like they can do it in VLC Player.

When trying out Movie Trailers tab, we found all trailers to be playing seamlessly. It streams the trailers directly from the famous Apple Trailers website.

The Last FM Radio tab actually calls Playlist.com service API. Since only paying subscribers of Last.Fm are allowed to stream radio from any external source, developer has replaced the service to Playlist.com, which works perfectly fine.

From main settings window, you can customize the A/V behavior, and change General and Information Panel-specific settings.

Kantaris Media Player has some nice features and is a good attempt by a lone developer, but it has a long way to go when compared with other mainstream media players. It runs on Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and 7; testing was done on Windows 7 x86 system.

It is one brilliant looking media player which also caters almost every feature and option you might be looking for.

The very first thing you’d notice is its broad and beautiful layout. All the features, options and viewer settings are expanded on the upper part of the interface. Furthermore, usage is a cinch & absolute expressive in terms of adding files by simply dragging over it, moving library items, etc, thus you can do customization in every facet you’d think of.

With handy right-click options, you’ll be able to quickly set the song equalizer, clear associated meta-data, rate the song, enqueue in playlist, open the file location, view complete information, etc.

For adding information in the song you can select the track and click More Information in the upper part of the window to populate the song details with basic information which includes; Song title, year, genre, artist, etc. You can also insert album cover art by clicking Browse in More Information window.

The video player is quite handy as well, apart from basic playback option it also lets you manage the movies and other videos archive in nice looking way. As you can change the position by simply dragging the file, sorting the media in its interface is quite easy to get along with.

Other noteworthy features are controlling viewer settings and efficient real-time search feature, it includes an easy-to-use viewer slider from which you can easily change the playlist view and if you’re dealing with enormous music archive then its fast search capability will surely help you in navigating through the playlist.

In short, it is one awesome media player which is worth giving a try. Even though the interface is quite hefty on memory and could take 150MB while playing a video file, but its aesthetics will surely appeal you in every aspect. At the moment it is in Beta so you will hopefully find more features in the full and stable release.

Though we’ve covered tons of media players, every time we came across multi-featured media player which is distinctive in its attributes, we can’t wait to test it out for you. Since the portability of media players is big advantage, GreenForce Player is one which offers mobility along with multiple features. Apart from the simple playback features & options, securing media files with password protection is the most shinning one among the features list.

The interface is quite neat and all the simple playback options are expanded on the lower part of the window. It also includes a handy playlist manager to manage all of your media files quickly.

The best among its features is locking media files, you can secure media files with a password. Under DRM menu, select Protect Video to specify the source file and the output folder to save it with password-protection being enabled. You can also tag the video by inserting relevant details and add coverflow along. It save videos in its native format (gfp), so you wont be able to play it on any other media player. Extravagant Video Effects

VLC  include numerous aesthetic video effects, such as; Image adjustment, Transformation, Video cropping, Geometrical view & magnification, Video rotation, Color fun, and Image modification. You can access these video features through Extended Settings from main VLC IDE. Switching to Video Effects tab will show up these features in numerous tabs.

Basic Image Adjustments

VLC provides basic image adjustment options. Under Basic tab, you can play around with various color adjustments; Hue, Contrast, Brightness, Gamma, etc. On adjusting the color,  you can view changes in realtime. Color adjustment options can also be very helpful especially when you are playing a video, having noise, glitches and lacks normal color pattern.

Video Sharpness effect

Apart from basic image adjustment options, there is another much demanded feature which will let you adjust video sharpness up to the acme of clarity. Under Basic tab, enable Sharpen option and adjust the sigma control as required. It will show you the changes in realtime so you can promptly adjust sharpness accordingly.

Scrutinize the wonderful sharp effect it produced in the video shown below.

Transforming to different angles

The Transform option allows you to rotate video by multiple degrees. Enabling Transform option would activate the video rotation feature. It offers rotation in 90,180, and 270 degrees. This comes useful if you have a video that you recorded via the camcorder in a different angle.

Video magnification/Zoom in & out

Another intriguing feature is Video Magnification. Under Geometry tab, enable Magnification/Zoom option, to let it zoom in/out the video. You will see a small window at top left corner with main magnification control. Fill in the triangle by clicking it to zoom into the video. To view the desired video portion, move the square capturing screen across the box.

Video Rotation

With an excellent rotation feature, you can rotate the video in any direction. Enable Rotation option, and start moving the rotary control in circle.

Add a bit fun with Puzzle Game

The moment you hit Puzzle game option, it would turn the video into puzzling pieces. Enter number of columns & rows in which you need to solve out video puzzle. It divides the video into specified chunks on the screen.

Under Color fun tab, you can play around with colors, there is absolutely no list of colors to select from. You can write color code to introduce it in the video. Apart from this, through Color Extraction option, you can enter a specific color code to extract it from the video.

Panoramic view (Optimal for Muti-Screen)

Vout/Overlay is another superb feature, allowing video junkies to spread the video on the desktop wall in multiple windows. In this way, you can individually handle, manage and change the position of the video parts separated in windows. To make this effect look awesome, try it on a large HD TV or projector. On the left side enabling Add text option would add the text in each window.

Adding Logo

Overlaying logo option comes in handy, you can easily insert a logo (PNG/JPG format) in the video as a watermark. It also helps in overlaying existing logo with an image. To make use of this feature, under Logo tab, specify the full path of image where it is residing, adjust transparency control and allocate the position. The importance of this feature is that you can add the company logo while giving a video presentation.

Synchronization

Kudos to VLC for bringing up sync feature, those who haven’t used it yet, really missed out an important one. Under Synchronization tab, you can manually manage the A/V (Audio/video) sync and deal with them by adjusting the time. Most of the converted videos lacks A/V sync primarily because of change in FPS (Frames Per Second), this actually invokes the problem of either video or audio lagging behind. For adjusting the A/V sync problem, change the values in Advance of audio over video input pane, positive value refers to as video is lagging behind and conversely is the case with negative values which refers to as audio lagging behind.

Right beneath A/V sync settings, you will find Subtitles settings, to make subtitle properly sync with video, i.e, appears on right time. Adjust the timing in a way as defined in aforementioned criteria for A/V sync, positive values refers to subtitles showing up ahead of video. At the bottom, you can change subtitles speed. It may happen sometimes, on downloading subtitles from different source, or from different author, the speed (FPS) is not aligned with the video FPS, i.e, video running on different FPS and conversely subtitles FPS differs. To cope up with this problem, speeding of the subtitles option helps amazingly.

Record Webcam Video

Recording video from a webcam is another awesome feature VLC offers. It automatically populates the list of devices attached with your system. To record a video from the Webcam, under Media menu, click Capture Device. From Video device name, select the webcam device and click Play. It will turn on the webcam, from it’s main IDE, you can start recording the video instantly

Bookmarking media

Now this must be surprising to most users. Did you know that you can bookmark as well? VLC allow users to bookmark media files, whether you are playing it from local media, or streaming it from any remote location. You can instantly bookmark the media file and access it anytime later.

Advance Open File

Bluray DVD discs & rips comes with separate audio channels for giving the real effect of surrounded sound. Unlike others, VLC features Advance Open File option, which allows you to open a video file along with the separate audio file (if existed). You will find rip-less video synchronization with the external audio file ‘phenomenal’. Next time, you are planning on playing Bluray rip, take a whir of this feature.

Take Snapshots (PNG,JPG format supported)

As VLC offers instantaneous pause and allows playback in frames, as you can see here. You might need to take a snapshot of either specific frame or an instant paused frame. Guess what? VLC lets you take screenshots as well. You can capture a frame either by pausing the video, or while playbacking video frame-by-frame. To take snapshot more promptly assign a hotkey to snapshot feature from VLC Preferences. Otherwise from Video menu, click Snapshot to capture a screenshot of a frame.

Customize Interface

There are so many features & functions VLC offers which makes it distinctive from others, Among those features, one is interface customization feature. Under View menu, you will find Customize Interface. It allows you to; change menus, buttons, add/delete buttons, change layout of main layout, and change playback controls positions as well.

Here you can see some customizations that I have performed on the main interface.

Debug Logging

Want to know what went wrong with Video FPS, codecs you are using, why some feature is not compatible, or why you are encountering lagging and other relevant issues? VLC can tell you about any problem. With it’s intrinsic Debug logging feature, it can inform you about info like; lack of correspondence (in Network), video discrepancy, why feature is not supported or not compatible, which codec is missing, app crash, and erratic A/V halt due to unidentifiable reason. To view log, from View menu, under Add Interlace, click Debug logging.

Windows Media Player is Microsoft’s flagship media player that comes pre-installed with Windows OS. It not only supports wide variety of audio/video formats but gives a user choice of configuring the supporting plug-ins, skins and visualizations. It has gone through many overhauls over the period of time and though the latest version boast of many advance features, one still wishes to see more.

Windows Media Player Plus! is a plug-in for Windows Media Player that lets you add various user interface and playback enhancements.

Advanced Tag Editor was a very popular feature prior to the launch of WMP 11. After Microsoft ditched it in newer versions, many users felt it wasn’t the smartest decision. Amongst other alternatives, Windows Media Player Plus get the brownie points for providing a tag editor that not only replaces the Advanced Tag Editor but also works fine on all the newer WMP versions.

It supports real-time “find as  you type” library search means you can start typing your search without having to click the provided search fields.

With it you access the standard Explorer menu of a media file from within the Windows Media Player (see first screenshot above). Likewise, you can access the settings of a WMP plug-in from the tools properties without having to go through Options menu. You can restore the last running media item or playlist on startup.

It also allows one to send information of the currently playing song to Windows Live Messenger.

This tool only works with Windows Media Player 11 or higher. We tested it on Windows 7 32-bit.

When it comes to media playback, many big players instantly spring to mind. VLC Media Player, KMPlayer, Media Player Classic are perhaps the top three all across the product line. With the features that these applications bring, its hard to fathom a newcomer making any place. So was the question in my mind when I came across the software Power Video Player.

I played with for a while, wondering if there was anything in this player that would qualify it for a review. As I was to give up, I noticed something, HD playback. Power Video Player had the most amazing rendering of 1080p videos.

Let me explain. I have an Intel Core i3 processor in my laptop with a 15.6”, 1366 x 768 screen.  Theoretically, with VLC or KMPlayer, 1080p videos were at best grainy, with obvious stuttering. VLC fared even worse with those on default settings. With PVP, the difference was obvious. The software claims to employs DirectShow, COM Interop and PInvoke programming, and the resulting 1080p playback was as smooth and crystal clear as any other video format. There was no stuttering element at all.

Other than this, the interface is minimalist, with not much settings to play with. Primary features include:

- Convenient UI
- Plays almost all multimedia formats (requires appropriate codecs to be present on the client system)
- Full DVD Support (MPEG-2 and AC3 decoders should be installed on the client system)
- Video control: Video size, aspect ratio
- Playback speed control
- Windowed and fullscreen playback
- Displays detailed information about each video and audio stream
- Reports the format that could not be rendered because of the missing codec(s)
- Customizable keyboard and mouse actions
- Multilingual interface: English, Russian
- Skinnable (only one default skin is shipped now)
- Supports various video renderers: Legacy Video Renderer, VMR/VMR9, EVR

The program is written in C# as a Windows Forms application and works with all versions of Windows. Our testing was done with Windows 7 32-bit OS.

PsyMP3 is portable opensource audio player sporting a simple, minimalistic, and keyboard-driven user interface. It is a general, all-round, simple media player named after the bar spectrum visualization, which is a simple psychovisual display.

When started, select the song that you want to add to the playlist, you can only add one song at a time. When done, click Cancel and the songs will start playing automatically.

Files can be chosen in multiple formats by changing the Files of Type drop down box. It supports the following file types:

• RIGHT:   Fast forwards playback, 1.5 seconds at a time
• R:         Restarts the playing track
• L:         Loads a new track into this playlist slot temporarily
• I:         Appends a new track to the end of the playlist
• B:         Turns on “Repeat Track”
• Z:        Displays frame rate counter

It provides Last.fm Scrobbler support by showing Now Listening and your Last.fm user profile page will state that you are using PsyMP3! It will create a file by name “lastfm_config.txt” where you need to enter your username and password to connect with Last.fm. It also works with Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, and remote control via the Winamp remote-control interface (e.g. Foxy Tunes, the Winamp toolbar, etc.) by showing Now Playing audio file name.

On YouTube you can find almost every song, so what better way than making a complete media player out of it? Today we will cover two different apps – Muziic and TubeRadio.fm. Muziic is a desktop app that allows users to play YouTube music while TubeRadio is a web app. Both have the capability to create custom playlists.

Muziic

Create a media player to play local files, add YouTube, add Radio, a few other features and you get Muziic. Basically most of it is based around YouTube itself. You just need to search for an artist or song and the results will be displayed instantly. Note that apart from the results it also shows the channel.

On the right side you will find the video preview of the music you are playing while below it is an option to organize playlist. To add a song to your playlist, simply hit the ‘+’ button in the search result. Once you have added the songs to the playlist, click Save to save it permanently.

TubeRadio.fm

TubeRadio is an alternative for those users who prefer an online service rather than a desktop app. The benefit of web service is that your playlist and the favorite music collection can be accessed from virtually anywhere.

It has a very clean interface and looks pretty much like iTunes and Spotify. Just search for an artist and you will be shown the albums(album art taken from Last.fm), search for a song and you will be shown a huge result list.

The saved playlists are displayed under My Playlist on the left sidebar. You can also make a public playlist and share it with the world. An option to shuffle and repeat songs are given just above the volume slider.

TubeRadio.fm

AniPlayer X is a newly developed portable media player designed for those people who love watching video series(mostly Anime). With this video player the developer has targeted a very niche audience of Anime lovers, thus the name AniPlayer(Anime Player).

Apart from the fancy DimLight feature and Playlist sidebar on the right, I really couldn’t find a feature that would compel people to watch Anime videos in this player. The only thing that actually makes it look good is the sleek eye-candy user interface and the option to open multiple instances of AniPlayer.

The black interface and the straight forward eye-candy buttons might appeal the anime lovers, but that too is something I would highly doubt. Want to give it a try yourself, hit the link below, but at AddictiveTips we love VLC Player more than anything else.

VLC Media Player 1.0 gets launched after years in development, you download it instantly and launch it up. “Huh! There seems to be nothing new”, you proclaim. This is exactly what this post is about, showing you eight new useful features of VLC 1.0 that your faint eye can’t see otherwise.

Instantaneous Pausing

“Is this even a feature?”, say ex-vlc fanboys who have ported over to other media players. In fact, this is one of the many features that has been requested for such a long time. Instantaneous Pausing allows a user to pause any video the moment he/she hits the pause button, no more delays. It pauses at the exact frame(without skipping) which is quite impressive.

Live Recording

Yup, you heard it right. The latest version now supports on-the-fly recording for all type of medias. In case you are wondering how to make recording easier, go to View menu and hit Advanced Controls. You will now see a Record button next to control buttons.

Frame By Frame Playback

So you are watching a superhero movie with your friends and a huge explosion goes off. To enjoy it once again, you can now go over it frame-by frame with the frame by frame playback functionality. When you enable advanced controls from the View menu, apart from Record, Snapshot, and Loop buttons, you will find the Frame-by-Frame Playback button. Clicking it once will move your video to the next frame, pressing it again will move it to another frame ahead and so on.

Before VLC 1.0, if you had to take a snapshot of any part of the video the quickest way would be to hit snapshot button at the right time during the video. If you don’t get lucky, an alternative way is to try hitting the Pause button which will actually pause the video after missing few seconds. Frame by frame playback makes tasks such as snapshot much more easier.

Customizable Interface

So you don’t like the look, right? No problem, now you can customize the interface according to your own styles and needs. Simply head over to the View menu and hit Customize Interface. Now go ahead and select the buttons that you want, the position at which you want them, and much more. There are also some pre-configured Profiles that you might want to try out.

AirTunes Streaming

For those who don’t know what is Airtunes streaming, it is a functionality for Apple’s Airport Express that allows you to play media files on your home stereo speakers. Originally it was developed to work with iTunes but now VLC has officially added the support for AirTunes streaming as well.

If you have Apple’s Airport Express properly installed, all you need to do is to load up your favorite media file on VLC Media Player, head over to the playlist, right-click the media file and hit Stream. Ofcourse you will need to tweak some basic settings later, but it works flawlessly.

Full screen Interface/Minimal View & Better Video Scaling

Whether you have an old 17” monitor or the latest 40” LCD, VLC Media Player will now scale your videos better in fullscreen mode. Don’t get confused between Fullscreen Mode and Fullscreen Interface, the former is the same old fullscreen when you double-click the video, while the later is the new functionality. Fullscreen interface and Minimal view, both can be accessed from the View tab and are important in their own terms.

- Fullscreen Interface comes useful when you have to watch the video in fullscreen and at the same time want access to the menus. (Hotkey: Ctrl+H)

- Minimal view comes useful when you want to watch the video in fullscreen mode and keep watch on other windows in the taskbar as well. (Hotkey: F11)

Finer Speed Controls

Remember the good old days when you were able to easily forward and reverse your movie in the VHS Player, such a functionality is back in the latest release of VLC but in a whole new way. Head over to the Playback menu and you will find all types of Speed Controls from faster/slower to jump forward/backward.

New Formats And New HD Codecs

If you are searching for a good video player that can play HD-DVD and Blu-Ray movies seamlessly, you just found one. The latest release of VLC brings many new HD codecs, formats, and adds some improvement to various Demuxers and Encoders. Now you can play Blu-ray and HD-DVD movies without any lag.

Note: If you experience lagging while playing HD Movies, make sure that your hardware actually supports it before complaining about VLC to the developers.

Miscellaneous

Apart from the features that we have mentioned above it now also supports two new playlists: Windows Media Player Playlist(WPL) and Zune Playlist(ZPL). It also brings some core improvements to the subtitles and allows you to export the playlist in HTML format. Another important improvement has been made to the video when running in fullscreen mode, you can now zoom inside while keeping the black borders. One of the perks of Linux is that it offers a large numbers of free tools and applications. Ubuntu supports a vast number of media players, below we have reviewed 12 of them along with their installation instructions and usage. The benefit of writing the installation instructions along with a short review is that it helps a user to install multiple apps easily without having to visit the product page.

VLC Player

It is a very stable, cross-platform  and portable media player which can  also be used as media converter. There is long list of audio and video formats like Wave, DivX, MPEG, mp3, ogg, and aac which VLC player can support.  Installing and using it on Ubuntu is easy. To install it, run the following command in terminal.

sudo apt-get install vls vls-plugin-esd mozilla-plugin-vlc

Once installation is complete, it can be loaded from  Applications > Sound & Video > VLC Media Player.

It has very rich set of features and a lot of options are available. You can use Media tab to perform basic media operations like Open File, Open Directory, Open  Disc, Save Media File and Convert etc.

Similarly Audio and Video menus offers wide range of options,  you can check various play list options from Playlist menu.

Mplayer

Mplayer is also one of the most used media player across all operating systems.  It offers features like user-friendly interface, support for large number of media formats,  etc. We have already covered MPlayer in one of our previous post, you can check the full details regarding its installation and usage here .

Amarok

Amarok is a cross-platform media player which has gained quite a popularity over the time.  It has rich set of features like playing all media formats files, tagging music, creating and editing play lists, etc. Bbasically it uses the components of KDE and in case you are going to use it in Gnome Desktop environment then you will need to install its supporting components. Installation is very easy, just follow through the following steps.

Go to Applications > Add/Remove.

Search and Choose Amarok and click Apply Changes, it will install all its required components as well.

Once installation is complete, load it from Applications > Sounds & Videoss> Amarok. Here is screenshot showing its main window.

As discussed in its introductory paragraph that it offers wide range of features, you really need to spend some time with it to get familiar with its all set of feature.

SongBird

SongBird is one of the most famous open source, customizable media player. It is well known for interacting with online contents using its plugins.

To install it, first download its latest release from its official site. Once download is complete, open terminal and go through following steps.

1. Untrar the downloaded file as :

tar -xvf Songbird_1.2.0-1146_linux-i686.tar.gz

2. Go into extracted folder

cd Songbird

3. Run following command to initialize the installation wizard.

sh songbird

Now, go through the graphical installation wizard. At first step accept the license agreement and click Continue.

Next, choose Add-ons and click Continue to proceed further.

In the final step, click Finish.

Now, songbird will initialize to install, it will hardly take couple of minutes to complete installation.

Thats all, now here is how it looks when launched.

Banshee

Banshee makes organizing, playing, and sharing music much more easier. It has very eye-candy and user friendly interface. It encodes/decodes different media formats by using GStreamer on the back end. To install it, run following command in terminal.

sudo aptitude install banshee

Once installation is complete, load it from Applications > Sounds & Video > Banshee Media Player.

You can play any media file with it by going to Media > Open Location option. Here browse the directory structure and select the file.

It lets you import/export  music libraries from Media > Import Media option. You can also create your own play lists (called smart list) in Banshee.

Rhythmbox

Rhytmbox is originally inspired by Apple’s iTunes, it also works very well under Gnome desktop environment. It lets you play and organize the media files, to install it in Ubuntu, run the following command in  terminal.

sudo apt-get install rhythmbox

Once installation is complete, load it from Applications > Sound & Video > Rhythmbox Music Player.

It has an icon bar located under the main bar. Here you can find most commonly used options like  Play, Shuffle and Repeat. You can add play lists form Music > Playlist > New play list option.

One of the most exciting feature of Rhythmbox is that you can subscribe to podcast (podcast is actually a series of media files which are available to be downloaded via web).

It also lets you update your subscription with podcast in an easy way by using Update option.

JuK

JuK is free audio media player for Ubuntu and it supports MP3, Ogg Vorbis, and FLAC audio files. It has strong focus on management of music but it also offers CD burning feature. Installing it in Ubuntu is a piece-of-cake, go to Applications > Add/Remove. Choose Juk from list of available program and click Apply Changes. It will take some time to install as it involves some dependencies.

Once installed, you can launch it from Applications > Sounds & Videos > Juk.

You can open audio media file by using File > Open option. Further you can explore its different available options to get acquainted with its different feature, e.g View menu offers rich set of features.

Quodlibet

The main goal for quodlibet is to provide an easy-to-use interface for organizing media collection. It is an audio media that most people prefer to use it in Ubuntu. To install it , run the following command in terminal.

sudo apt-get install quodlibet

Once installation is complete, load it from Applications > Sound & Videos > Quodlibet.

You can easily manage your audio collection form Music Option which is located in the main menu. You can add new files/folders, browse your already created libraries, set preferences for Quod Libet and install many useful plugins.

Totem

Totem is  yet another media player to play audio and video in Gnome Desktop environment . It has features like advanced coding support, full screen mode, forward and seek facility. You need not to install it as it comes as a part of Ubuntu distribution.

It can be launched from Applications > Sound & Videos > Movie Player.

One of the well known feature of totem is Youtube support, you can browse and watch Youtube video in it. To watch it, select Youtube from Playlist drop down.

Xine

Xine is also a free, light-weight, and high performance media player in Ubuntu. It offers very powerful API and is further extended and used by many opensource applications.

Run the following command to install it in Ubuntu.

sudo aptitude install xine-ui libxine-extracodecs

Once installation is complete, launch it from Applications > Sounds & Videos > Xine Media Player. Here is screenshot of how it looks.

Exaile

Exaile media player offers a wide range of advanced features specially automatic fetching of album art, handling of large libraries, and lyrics fetching etc. To install it in Ubuntu, run the following command in terminal.

sudo apt-get install exaile

It will take almost no time to install, once installation is complete you can easily launch it from Applications > Sounds & Videos > Exaile. Let me share the screenshot of its main window.

You can find common media playere’s functions like Opening media files, discs, etc from File Menu.

Beep

Beep is a free media player  which is actually based on XMMS (XMMS  is a free, opensource audio player just like Winamp).  To install Beep is a piece-of-cake, run the following command in terminal to install it.

sudo apt-get install beep

Once installation is complete, you can load it from Applications > Sounds & Videos > Beep Media Player. Here is screenshot showing how it looks when playing music file.

Microsoft’s free Zune software is a great place for managing your music collection, for $15 a month you can have access to unlimited music downloads and 10 DRM free downloads every month.You can download and manage your music playlists, but these playlists are not compatible with Windows Media Center. To convert the playlist, select both Zune playlist folder and Windows Media Player playlist folder and press Convert.

You can also backup existing playlists easily. Some people may argue that you can do the same by opening the playlist with notepad and changing the header, but it gets both tedious and boring when dealing with multiple playlists that get updated frequently. Multimedia Keyboards are those which contains some additional keys to control Videos/Music and open programs such as Email. These buttons work great with Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center but they fail to work with 3rd party media players such as VLC and Winamp. That’s probably because these media players don’t support such keyboards. Media Keyboard 2 is a free tool that adds multimedia keyboard support to these unsupported media players.

I have a little hearing problem which makes it a little difficult understanding what actors are talking in the movie. I usually see every movie with English subtitles, so when I don’t understand the dialogues, I can read them. This is very helpful for both ordinary people and hearing impaired people, I have seen people who can hear and understand the dialogues but still prefer to use subtitles so that they don’t miss a single dialogue.

Since I watch every movie with subtitles, many people have been asking me the best and easiest way to add it. So today I will share a post on how to download and add subtitles in Dvdrip movies.

Downloading Dvdrip Movies and Subtitles

I usually download Dvdrip movies from 2 uploaders, FXG and aXXo. Many people are familiar with aXXo calling him a legend, but I will recommend FXG for some movies which aXXo has not released so far(such as IronMan).

Subtitles are not embedded in these movies as default, they are available as a separate file. FXG usually uploads the subtitle(.srt) file along with the movie in a single torrent, while aXXo uploads subtitles separately which can be downloaded from here.

Installing The Media  Player

Dvdrip movies are in .avi format, which many media players run poorly. I will recommend VLC media player, which plays every video format without a glitch.

Installation is quite easy, make sure that you install all contents of VLC player, some of them can be helpful in the future.

After the installation is complete, run the media player, it will look something like this.

Adding The Subtitle In the Movie

After finding and downloading the subtitles, make sure that both movie and subtitle file are in the same folder.

Before you play the movie, open the VLC player and navigate to Settings > Preferences.

Now on the left sidebar navigate to Video > Subtitles/OSD.

Click Browse and then locate your subtitle file and click Open and then click Save in the preferences box. Now close the VLC player and then play your movie with VLC player and you will see the subtitles displaying with the movie.

If the subtitle is not displaying, right click on the screen and navigate to Subtitle track and then select Track 1.
