With each passing day, more and more applications and services are beginning to appear on the internet. A lot of simple functions, from opening and editing text files to listening to music and watching movies, can be performed without having to download anything to your computer. Pandora is an online radio service that allows you to listen to music by visiting its home page. Now, someone has been kind enough to develop an open source desktop client for Pandora, named Elpis, to manage your account, and listen to your favorite bands and artists. It allows you to view, sort and select stations, as well as play, pause, skip, thumbs up, thumbs down and mark a song when you tired of it to stop it for appearing in the list again. The application allows you to sign in to your Pandora account, bringing in all your favorite stations and music to the program. The Settings button at the top right allows you to set default application options, such as Audio Format, Station Sort Order, Global Media Keys etc.

Once you are logged in to the application, the Add button at the top right allows you to search for new artists, songs, and related playlists.

Double-clicking a station will automatically activate its playlist, and add the station to your account.

In the playlist view (accessible from Playlist button in the top-left), you can Rename, Delete, Add Variety (add similar stations) and view Station Info.

Freemake Music Box is a music player that lets you search for free online music, and listen to millions of songs. It allows you to find, listen to and organize your favorite music, and automatically plays videos from YouTube. You can search the music by artist name, album name or the exact song name, depending on your choice. The application enables you to create and save playlists, change the order of songs in playlists, and keeps the playlists intact for listening to your favorite songs at a later time. While Activity Monitor is quite a comprehensive parental control and online activity monitoring and regulation application, it’s interface needs some work, and should be improved by the developers to make options more easy to identify, combined with a more attractive UI. JukeRec has a massive collection of online radio stations specializing in a variety of music genres. All the stations are neatly divided into categories defined by their genre. If you like a radio station and feel that you might like to listen to it again, you may add it to favorites for quick access. The application allows you to record radio streams and save them to your hard disk. You can also edit the radio stream list and add new stations by their URL. JukeRec keeps a log of both play and record activity during a session.

The interface of JukeRec is divided into two panes. Record, Options, Radio Stream List, Activity and Help tabs are in the left pane, and their details appear in the right pane when selected.

The Record tab is the default selection. To stream a radio station of your choice, select a Category, Station and click Play Radio Stream. Click Record Radio Stream to start and stop recording the stream, and the audio file generated by the recording will be automatically saved on to your hard drive. Click Move to Favorite if you wish to store a station in your favorites list, which, in turn, can be accessed from the Category menu.

The Options tab lets you define the Name and Output Directory of the recorded files. Either you can choose a limited time duration, or you can record the whole radio stream.

In Radio Stream List, you can Search, Edit, Delete and Add an a new radio stream to the list. To add a radio stream, click Add and enter the name, URL and select a category for your desired radio station.

The Activity tab keeps logs of Play and Record Activity for the current session only.

I covered a post on extracting colors from websites. But what if you want to extract colors from an image? CSS Drive’s Image to Colors Palette Generator is a free online service that lets you generate colors pallete instantly. You can either upload the image from your computer or enter an image link. Only png, .gif, .jpg and .jpeg images are supported and they must not be bigger than 1MB in size.

I uploaded a very unique multicolored art image, the end results were astonishing.

Just move your mouse over any color and you will see it’s Hex number which you can use in art, web development or simply for inspiration. It’s great tool but unfortunately it only supports 1MB image maximum, perhaps the developer can increase the limit since most images these days are heavier in size. To use this tool you will have to compress the image first and then upload it.

It also generates Photoshop swatches and CSS stylesheet, just navigate all the way to bottom and you will find their links respectively.

I recently came across a useful little app that lets you save your IM chat history online. IM-History is a free tool that resides on the system traybar and uploads all IM chat history to one secure website, which can be later accessed from anywhere in the world. It is a small yet powerful tool, that takes very less system resources while running seamlessly in the background.

It currently supports Windows Live, Yahoo, Skype, AIM,  ICQ, Trillian, Pidgin, Miranda, and QIP 2005 Messengers only. Once you run the program, it will ask you to sign up, that will take a few seconds if you are fast. Once you have confirmed your email address click Proceed. It will begin detecting all Instant Messengers installed on your system and you can then choose which IM chat history do you want to save, you can select all if you want to save all chat history(see screenshot below).

In my test it failed to detect Windows Live Messenger 2009, I believe it supports Live Messenger 8.1 and older versions only. You will have to restart your messenger once you have selected it to save chat history.

You can send your file to be scanned by email. Simply create a new email, write SCAN in the subject field, attach the file that you want to scan(file size should not exceed 20MB), and send it to scan@virustotal.com. That’s it.

Windows Uploader

Download VirusTotal Uploader for Windows here. Once you have installed it, an option will show in your right-click context menu under Send To option. See the screenshot below to get a more clear view.

Right-click any file that you want to scan, select Send To and click VirusTotal. This will upload your file to their server for scanning and a new browser window will open with the scanning process. If your file is infected, delete it immediately, otherwise you can spare it’s life. Enjoy!

A few days back we covered how to send secure and encrypted email messages using lockbin. Common Problem 1: No download link when I paste the video address in.
-Be sure to paste in the Video URL in the right format. See the example near the Help button. You will have to cut off things like "&feature=bz301" that might come with the copied URL address, if any present.
-It might be possible that the video you are trying to download was removed from youtube and is not accessible anymore.
-You are maybe using a browser that doesn’t have support for this service. Try using the latest Firefox or Internet Explorer.
-You might not have Javascript Enabled on your browser, or your Security Settings are too high. -The SaveTube server is too busy, sometimes there are 100 people trying to backup at the same time. Be patient, click GO and wait for your turn.
Common Problem 2: I don’t know what to do with the get_video file that I got from SaveTube
When the download is finished, just rename the file from get_video to somevideo.flv … Just add a .flv extension, then use an FLV Player to play it. You can also convert it. Go to the tools page for more info.
