Annoyed by those accidental touches on your Android device’s screen that halt your progress while enjoying videos/movies, playing motion sensor-based games, or while wiping dust off it? If your answer is yes, then what you need is No Touch – a free Android app that allows you to block control through touch. The app sports multiple ways to help you prevent triggering controls via accidental touches, the simplest of them all being a tiny little button at the bottom-right of the screen that can be tapped to toggle between blocking and unblocking. Details to follow.

With the screen locked, you can even afford to hand over the device to your kid without having to worry about him/her messing up the device’s settings, making inadvertent calls, or indulging in any unintended misuse for that matter.

As mentioned earlier, there are multiple ways to trigger the lock/unlock mechanism; you can tap the persistent on-screen toggle, use the camera hardware button, or long-press the search button (if your device has one). That’s not all; by covering the proximity sensor of your device, you can temporarily unlock screen controls. It must also be noted that the locking mechanism does not apply to the notification bar or hardware buttons. You can still drag down the notification bar to take a look at your notifications, and/or use your device’s hardware keys even while the screen is locked.

Once installed, the app adds a couple of icons to your app drawer. While the No Touch Toggle icon, as evident by its name, can be used to initiate the app (reveal its toggle), the No Touch Settings icon provides access to the app’s settings screen that offers extensive customizability. Apart from toggling all aforementioned block methods on or off, you can also enable/disable the app itself or set it to auto-initiate upon device reboot from the same screen.

No Touch is available for free on the Android Market. The version that will be downloaded to your device is ad-supported. However, you have the option to Buy the full version from within the app for a meager $1.99. Upgrading to the full version removes ads, and adds the option to lock hardware keys as well. To purchase the full version of app, navigate to the very last option on the settings screen.

The download link and QR code provided below take you to the app’s Android Market page.

Download No Touch

Managing multiple windows in Mac OS X Lion is done primarily using Mission Control, where you can create different desktops and assign the windows you have open to each one, according to what you’re working on. It is somewhat equivalent of working with multiple monitors, except that you don’t have all your screens displayed at the same time, and you have to swipe through to get to them. When it comes to managing display space on a single screen, it takes a lot more effort to keep things organized. Spectacle is a Mac app that allows you to snap windows to one of four quadrants of the display, one of three parts of the height of the screen, and lets you switch to full screen, all using hotkeys.

The app comes with pre-defined hotkeys and runs unobtrusively in the system menu bar. To view and edit the hotkeys and set the app to start at system login, go to the app’s preferences.

To edit a hotkey, click the small x next to a key combination; this will delete the pre-defined one, and allow you to record a new one. Click the bubble that says Click to record, and type in the key combination when the bubble turns blue to read Enter hot key. To record the hotkey, press the key combination that you want to set. If you enter a combination that conflicts with a pre-existing one, the app will not record it and will prompt you that the combination is already in use.

The app itself works seamlessly, and will dock windows to different areas of the screen. Please note that you may only dock the active window, and not all windows of a particular program.

The app shouldn’t be considered an alternative to organizing windows using Mission Control. It is meant more to help you distribute screen space and work easily with multiple windows. The BetterSnapTool reviewed earlier this year is comparable.

If you are looking for an application that will let you move your mouse cursor over the edge of the screen to the other side, try Unlimited Mouse. It is a portable application which allows you to move your mouse cursor across the edges of your screen. It unlocks your mouse, and enables cursor movement from right-end of the screen to the left-end and from top to bottom without getting stopped by the screen edges. You can unlock and lock you mouse whenever you want to use this feature.

After installation, the application runs in system tray. Right-click the application to reveal Unlock Mouse and Lock Mouse options. Whenever you want to move your mouse across the borders of your screen, open the options and hit Unlock Mouse; vice versa, click Lock Mouse to restore the normal cursor behavior.

When Unlock Mouse option is enabled, you will see the mouse pointer at the right side after it reaches the left end of the screen. Same behavior will be followed for top to down and down to top movement, that whenever the mouse pointer reaches the edge of the screen, it will appear from the other side.

Some time ago, we covered a similar tool named Edgeless 2 that performed the same function as Unlimited Mouse, but Edgeless 2 provides separate options to wrap mouse pointer in vertical, horizontal or both directions. Unlock Mouse is a lightweight tool and works on all version of Windows.

The automatic power-save mode of Windows comes useful in situations where you have to leave your PC unattended. When you are not working, power save mode cuts your display monitor’s energy consumption by turning it off. Sleeper is a portable application that lets you turn off your computer screen with a specified keyboard shortcut. Well, you can also turn your monitor off with power button, but isn’t doing it with a hot key just better? Although Windows power-save mode turns monitor off after a defined interval of inactivity, this application is useful when you have to randomly leave your PC for short periods.

The application doesn’t have an interface, nor does it require you to configure any type of settings. Just launch the application to turn your display monitor off. The versatility of Sleeper lies in the number of ways that you can set it to turn off your screen. You can put the file in a folder of your choice and run the application whenever you want to turn your screen off. A desktop shortcut for Sleeper can also be created. Another option is to pin the application to Taskbar or Start Menu. This way, it will be more efficient, since you always have your Windows Taskbar in front of you.

Even though Pin to Taskbar and Pin to Start Menu are useful options, the best way to invoke Sleeper is by using the hotkey combination. First off, place a shortcut on your desktop, right-click it and select properties. Choose Shortcut tab, press the hotkey combination (Ctrl+Alt+Key or Ctrl+Shift+Key) in Shortcut key field and click OK. Now, whenever you use the defined hotkey combination, your screen will be turned off.

Move your mouse, or press any key on the keyboard to wake up the screen again. Sleeper works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

WindowsShades is a portable screen color adjustment tool to create tinted overlay which can be easily configured by defining the color and opacity. Along with these primary adjustments, it offers many other color-specific settings to overlay specified color on screen for better viewing. According to the developer, it is built for notebook users who need one full-fledged color adjustment application.

For instance, it comes useful for user who goes out frequently with his/her laptop for various purposes and needs to adjust screen color every so often according to the environment color scales. Another useful scenario is when reducing the brightness does not help in late night reading, adding tinted overlay on screen can help when eyes are sore.

After the application is installed, you can launch it from system tray, simple click will overlay screen with green shade. From system tray icon, you can toggle the shade and configure color and opacity.

It offers HSV-based color picker which lets you choose color of your choice, beneath HSV, you have opacity slider to adjust it in a desired way.

In case something goes wrong, it also provides user with multiple pre-defined counter measures. For example, you can press Escape key three times to restore the previous/default settings immediately. It runs on all versions of Windows, testing was done on Windows 7 x86 system.

Do you get distracted by other items on your browser window when you’re watching a video clip on YouTube? How about you’re making an important assignment using Word and hate it when a new message window pop ups from the task bar? You’re not alone. Everyone gets to do something that requires focus but distraction becomes the biggest enemy.

CinemaDrape is a small but useful tool that lets you focus on any one area you want on your computer screen. Start the program, the background will automatically get dimmed, and you’ll get a drape like frame which you can move, resize, and place anywhere on the screen. By right-clicking anywhere on the frame, you’ll get a context menu where you can tweak settings for optimized use. For instance, you can change the color of drape, increase/decrease opacity, and select up to nice selection areas on your screen.

The best thing about CinemaDrape is you no longer have to manually clean up your work screen or close other opened windows. You just get rid of distracting visual elements like unnecessary windows, applications, cluttered desktop, and much more so you can fully focus on the work at hand.

It is a portable tool that starts directly from the EXE file. After you are done using it, just press Esc and you’ll be out.

This application runs on Windows XP, Windows Vista & Windows 7. If you’re using XP, .Net 2.0 Runtime is required for it to function properly.

Download CinemaDrape

Now there is no need to install additional programs or utilities to capture screenshots, you can use Microsoft Office 2010′s Screen Clipping Tool. Adding screenshots to your documents and presentations in only a couple of clicks away. It is one of the important features of Microsoft OneNote that has been added in both MS Word 2010 and MS Powerpoint 2010.

Lets explore how we can use it in MS Word 2010. First of all launch MS Word and click Insert Menu, you will be seeing Screenshot tool located at icon bar as shown in the following screenshot.

Now, you will notice the drop down button, click it and you will see list of available screenshots and screen clipping tool.

You can use any already created screenshot, otherwise click screen clipping, choose you screen area and it will be captured in MS Word. For example, I captured a specific area of my desktop and here is screenshot showing the area captured in MS Word 2010.

Its that simple. Enjoy!

If you use Firefox and are looking to increase your productivity, then this tip is for you. Split Browser is a free add-on for Firefox that splits your screen to make space for more content. It is suitable for those users who have large screens, i.e screens larger than 19” or those who have high desktop resolutions.

Note: Split Browser is quite an old Firefox add-on, I am reviewing it here for those users who haven’t heard about it before and for for those who don’t know how to use it.

It only splits the content area, not the whole browser. You can open tabs in new content window, just right-click the tab, select ‘Split Tab To’ and then select the area where you would like to split.

If you have multiple tabs, you can select to split them all by clicking ‘Tile All Tabs’.

It can split the screen both vertically and horizontally, you can select how you want to view it by going to Split tab.

Below is an example of screen split both in vertical and horizontal position.

There are various useful options which help in customizing the add-on to your personal need. You can configure the General settings, Appearance, Combination options, and Menu.

It is a simple, easy-to-use, and powerful add-on. There are other similar screen splitting plug-ins out there, but Split Browser stands out from the rest and includes the most functionalities. Enjoy!

If you have a multi-monitor setup, then you know how hard it is to change wallpapers or background colors for each desktop. Windows will automatically extend the wallpaper in the first monitor to other monitors as well. If you want to keep different wallpapers for each monitor and change them frequently then it is almost impossible to do it from within Windows.

Wallmaster is a free opensource tool which allows you to set different wallpapers and background color for each monitor in a multi-monitor setup. If you have two monitors with different resolutions, it will automatically resize the wallpaper for each one of them.

You cannot use your webcam with more than one application at a time and there is no such option in Windows to make it possible. If you want to collaborate between multiple people who are in multiple IMs, then you will need to split your webcam. SplitCam is a free virtual video clone tool that connects multiple applications to a single video capture source. At maximum you can connect 64 clients to a single video source. In other words, it splits the video stream coming from the video source and tunnels it to numerous other client applications such as ICQ, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, Skype Video, Camfrog, AOL AIM, Pal Talk, etc.

Just install and run this tool, click Video, and select your webcam from the list of available devices as shown in the screenshot below.

You will now see your webcam working, you can also take the snapshot if you want.

To split your webcam and use it in multiple applications or Instant Messenger clients at the same time, just connect them to Split Cam virtual capture device and you are done. In this way it will look like 64 independent video sources have been plugged in your computer.

Features include:

Choose almost any video source as a primary video capture device.

Digital zoom.

Digital pan 180°.

Select a desirable frame rate from 5 to 30 fps. Usually you use 15 fps for videoconferencing.

Set up base video options directly from the main SplitCam window.

Bring up a manufacture provided options for fine tuning the physical video source.

Use any resolutions in client applications: 160×120, 320×240, 640×480, etc.

Every application can have its own video resolution.

You can disable unused video resolutions to lower the processor load.

Auto-update will ensure that you always have the latest version of the software.

Capturing photo images and providing them as a video source to client applications.

Basic photo editing of photo images before sending them to client applications.

Enjoy!
