Annoyed by those accidental touches on your Android device’s screen that halt your progress while enjoying videos/movies, playing motion sensor-based games, or while wiping dust off it? If your answer is yes, then what you need is No Touch – a free Android app that allows you to block control through touch. The app sports multiple ways to help you prevent triggering controls via accidental touches, the simplest of them all being a tiny little button at the bottom-right of the screen that can be tapped to toggle between blocking and unblocking. Details to follow.

With the screen locked, you can even afford to hand over the device to your kid without having to worry about him/her messing up the device’s settings, making inadvertent calls, or indulging in any unintended misuse for that matter.

As mentioned earlier, there are multiple ways to trigger the lock/unlock mechanism; you can tap the persistent on-screen toggle, use the camera hardware button, or long-press the search button (if your device has one). That’s not all; by covering the proximity sensor of your device, you can temporarily unlock screen controls. It must also be noted that the locking mechanism does not apply to the notification bar or hardware buttons. You can still drag down the notification bar to take a look at your notifications, and/or use your device’s hardware keys even while the screen is locked.

Once installed, the app adds a couple of icons to your app drawer. While the No Touch Toggle icon, as evident by its name, can be used to initiate the app (reveal its toggle), the No Touch Settings icon provides access to the app’s settings screen that offers extensive customizability. Apart from toggling all aforementioned block methods on or off, you can also enable/disable the app itself or set it to auto-initiate upon device reboot from the same screen.

No Touch is available for free on the Android Market. The version that will be downloaded to your device is ad-supported. However, you have the option to Buy the full version from within the app for a meager $1.99. Upgrading to the full version removes ads, and adds the option to lock hardware keys as well. To purchase the full version of app, navigate to the very last option on the settings screen.

Managing multiple windows in Mac OS X Lion is done primarily using Mission Control, where you can create different desktops and assign the windows you have open to each one, according to what you’re working on. It is somewhat equivalent of working with multiple monitors, except that you don’t have all your screens displayed at the same time, and you have to swipe through to get to them. When it comes to managing display space on a single screen, it takes a lot more effort to keep things organized. Spectacle  is a Mac app that allows you to snap windows to one of four quadrants of the display, one of three parts of the height of the screen, and lets you switch to full screen, all using hotkeys.

The app comes with pre-defined hotkeys and runs unobtrusively in the system menu bar. To view and edit the hotkeys and set the app to start at system login, go to the app’s preferences.

To edit a hotkey, click the small x next to a key combination; this will delete the pre-defined one, and allow you to record a new one. Click the bubble that says Click to record, and type in the key combination when the bubble turns blue to read Enter hot key. To record the hotkey, press the key combination that you want to set. If you enter a combination that conflicts with a pre-existing one, the app will not record it and will prompt you that the combination is already in use.

The app itself works seamlessly, and will dock windows to different areas of the screen. Please note that you may only dock the active window, and not all windows of a particular program.

The app shouldn’t be considered an alternative to organizing windows using Mission Control. It is meant more to help you distribute screen space and work easily with multiple windows. The BetterSnapTool reviewed earlier this year is comparable.

If you are looking for an application that will let you move your mouse cursor over the edge of the screen to the other side, try Unlimited Mouse.  It is a portable application which allows you to move your mouse cursor across the edges of your screen. It unlocks your mouse, and enables cursor movement from right-end of the screen to the left-end and from top to bottom without getting stopped by the screen edges. You can unlock and lock you mouse whenever you want to use this feature.

After installation, the application runs in system tray. Right-click the application to reveal Unlock Mouse and Lock Mouse options. Whenever you want to move your mouse across the borders of your screen, open the options and hit Unlock Mouse; vice versa, click Lock Mouse to restore the normal cursor behavior.

When Unlock Mouse option is enabled, you will see the mouse pointer at the right side after it reaches the left end of the screen. Same behavior will be followed for top to down and down to top movement, that whenever the mouse pointer reaches the edge of the screen, it will appear from the other side.

Some time ago, we covered a similar tool named Edgeless 2 that performed the same function as Unlimited Mouse, but Edgeless 2 provides separate options to wrap mouse pointer in vertical, horizontal or both directions. Unlock Mouse is a lightweight tool and works on all version of Windows.

The automatic power-save mode of Windows comes useful in situations where you have to leave your PC unattended. When you are not working, power save mode cuts your display monitor’s energy consumption by turning it off. Even though Pin to Taskbar and Pin to Start Menu are useful options, the best way to invoke Sleeper is by using the hotkey combination. First off, place a shortcut on your desktop, right-click it and select properties. Choose Shortcut tab, press the hotkey combination (Ctrl+Alt+Key or Ctrl+Shift+Key) in Shortcut key field and click OK. Now, whenever you use the defined hotkey combination, your screen will be turned off.

Now there is no need to install additional programs or utilities to capture screenshots, you can use Microsoft Office 2010′s Screen Clipping Tool. Adding screenshots to your documents and presentations in only a couple of clicks away. If you use Firefox and are looking to increase your productivity, then this tip is for you. Split Browser is a free add-on for Firefox that splits your screen to make space for more content. It is suitable for those users who have large screens, i.e screens larger than 19” or those who have high desktop resolutions.

Note: Split Browser is quite an old Firefox add-on, I am reviewing it here for those users who haven’t heard about it before and for for those who don’t know how to use it.

It only splits the content area, not the whole browser. You can open tabs in new content window, just right-click the tab, select ‘Split Tab To’ and then select the area where you would like to split.

If you have multiple tabs, you can select to split them all by clicking ‘Tile All Tabs’.

It can split the screen both vertically and horizontally, you can select how you want to view it by going to Split tab.

Below is an example of screen split both in vertical and horizontal position.

There are various useful options which help in customizing the add-on to your personal need. You can configure the General settings, Appearance, Combination options, and Menu.
