We’ve covered desktop apps for downloading music from SoundCloud for Windows 7, and we also featured a browser script that lets you do the same. SoundCloud Downloader, as common as the name is, is a downloader app for Mac, which allows you to search for a song from the said service, download it, and add it automatically to your iTunes folder. The app doesn’t have a music player, which means you cannot preview a song before downloading it, and will only know if you’ve got the right one once download is complete. The app downloads songs in MP3 format.

When you launch the app for the first time, follow the walkthrough for setting up preferences. You can modify the preferences later if you like, but they have mostly to do with where to save downloaded files and whether or not to add them to iTunes. It’s probably best to get it out of the way in the beginning, so you can find your downloaded files easily.

Once the few preliminaries are complete, go to the app’s main interface and type in the URL of a song from SoundCloud, or enter a track name, and the app will search for it and display results in its own browser window. There is no separate search button, so when you add a URL to the app’s search bar and click the Download button, it’s downloaded automatically, but doing the same for a track title will return the search results in the app’s own music browser.

You can download multiple files at a time, and the download progress is shown in the main app window below the search bar. When downloads complete, a magnifying glass appears at the end of the progress bar, clicking which will open the file at its location.

The app’s browser window has three tabs, one for Favorites (pulled from your SoundCloud user name), Browser for search results, and Downloaded listing all songs that you’ve downloaded. The browser also has a search bar that you can use to search for more songs. Depending upon your settings, downloaded songs will get added to iTunes automatically, which can be altered from Settings.

The app is fairly simple, and a media player to preview the music before actually downloading would have added to its usefulness. Nevertheless, SoundCloud Downloader is a practical solution to grabbing tracks from the popular service.

When searching for your favorite artists or songs, do you ever wish to see the entire list of albums and songs produced by them? AllSongsBy is a web service that provides the entire discography for any artist. Songs and other details are all fetched from YouTube’s massive music collection, and then  neatly displayed as interactive lists. AllSongBy has a slick interface that lets you search for music by Artist, Album or Song. Furthermore, it also lets you view the most popular artists, and you don’t have to go to YouTube or anywhere else to play your videos. In addition to that, if you’re interested in buying a song, you can simply purchase it through iTunes. AllSongsBy displays detailed information about each song, such as Name, Video, Views, Previews, Artist and Price.

At the top of the page, you will find different song genres such as Classical, Country, Rock, Reggae, Karaoke and several others. You can either select one of the categories, or search for your own song/artist. Underneath the search bar, you will find Popular music artists, listing a wide range of famous singers.

When you search for a particular artist, the entire list of songs and albums produced by them is  displayed, with the video shown to the right of Albums. You can select any song from the list and play it right there – no extra browsing required. Click Show all albums to see a complete list.

Once you’ve searched for an artist, the entire list of music by them is shown below the video. Songs are displayed with details such as Name, Video, Views, Preview, Artist and Price. The price for each song is given, and you can purchase it from iTunes.

AllSongsBy is a user-friendly web service that makes the whole music listening experience more interactive. It features a clear and clutter-free interface, which lets you enjoy the song or video and also makes navigating the site easier. SciLor’s Grooveshark Downloader was a desktop tool we covered a while back, which essentially lets you search for songs to download from Grooveshark. GrooveDown is a similar tool with one additional song information feature and a better interface. It lets you search and download multiple songs at once, you can define how and where the song(s) will be saved and check song information by right clicking a song from the list which SciLor’s Grooveshark Downloader didn’t.

If you compare it to SciLor’s Grooveshark Downloader’s interface, you’ll see how GrooveDown is better; as opposed to showing the song search and the files queued for download in the same window, it separates them neatly in to two tabs. To add a song to the download list, double click it. You can download multiple songs at the same time. To remove a song from the download list, right click it and select Delete Song from list.

Download progress is shown across two bars; the smaller bar shows download progress for an individual song and you can see which song is being downloaded on the thin bar at the very bottom of the window. The larger progress bar shows download progress when multiple songs are being downloaded; it indicates how much of the total download job remains. You can stop individual songs from downloading even when after download has started by right clicking it and selecting Delete Song from list.

You can choose how folders are created for each song; GrooveDown creates a separate folder for each song based on the album name and the song artist. Multiple songs can be downloaded and each is saved to its respective folder, it can detect if you’re downloading a song twice and removes the duplicate from the download list when you click download. You can change where songs are saved and how folders are created for each song by going to Settings.

To view song information, right click a song and select Get Song Information.

GrooveDown is build for Windows but the developers have covered methods to make it run on both Mac and Linux.

Alright, not a single click, but with maybe three clicks you can easily export your iTunes playlist and listen to your music on any other player. iExporter is a free portable opensource tool that lets you export your iTunes playlist instantly. Even a five year old can export the playlist using this tool, seriously.

Note for those who don’t know what exporting means: When you export the playlist, you are in fact exporting the mp3 files which you can play on any other media player.

This is how you do it.

1. Run iTunes
2. Run iExporter (Simply extract the zip file and run iExporter.exe)
3. Click Playlists and select the playlist you want to export
4. Choose directory where you wan tot save the songs and click Export

It is a dead simple app that everyone should carry on their USB drive. You can run this tool on your friend’s computer, export the playlist to your USB and grow your music collection. Enjoy!

Did you just download a song from YouTube or any other online video site? Now suppose you want to listen to this song on your iPod or any other mp3 device, or maybe you want to add it to your music playlist. The best way to do this would be to convert this music video in flash format (flv) into mp3 format. There is a nifty little free tool called Hash FLV to MP3 Converter that can do this job.

Run the program, click Add files button or press Ctrl+A to add flash music videos to the list.

Once all videos have been added, click Convert to Mp3 button or press Ctrl+M to being converting these videos into mp3 format.

Everyone knows that iTunes can’t be controlled with keyboard. There are many apps that add keyboard control functionality but they suffer from poor interface. iControl is a free, simple, and easy-to-use remote control for Apple’s iTunes that uses Global keyboard shortcuts to control it. It is still under development and the version available for download is Beta.

Surprisingly it worked very well on my system running Windows Vista. Just run iControl.exe and it will load iTunes instantly. Once iTunes is loaded, press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+F12 to bring iControl settings window.

Here you can change the shortcuts(by clicking the link ‘Let me change shortcuts’) to anything that suits you best. To Play/Pause any song you can make the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+P, to stop a song you can make it Ctrl+Alt+S, etc. Once done, click ‘OK, I am done’ link and click OK. When a song is played you will see the information window(see screenshot below).

It also shows when you control the playback of any song.

Here are some features of iControl:

In my last post I discussed about downloading specific files from inside zip or rar archive with LoadScout. Another useful feature of this app is that it lets you download and play a small portion of any mp3 or avi file for free.

Suppose you want to download a high quality audio podcast in mp3 format that is of 100mb. You can download and play a small portion of this podcast and decide whether you like it or not. If you like it then you can go ahead and download the whole podcast or just find the next podcast. In similar way, suppose you want to download a video(in avi format), instead of downloading the whole video, you can download a small portion and play it to see if it’s the right video for you.

I tested this feature of LoadScout by uploading an mp3 song to my server and then downloading a portion of it.

Run the program, click OpenURL, enter the url of the mp3 or avi file(in my case it was mp3 song) and click OK.

Now you will see the mp3 file’s details on the right sidebar. In my case it was a mp3 song of Metallica.

Now to begin extracting a small portion of this mp3 song, click Extract button. It will show a pop-up window where you can select the range which you would like to extract and also select the destination where you would like to save the file.

Make sure you have checked Open When Finish checkbox and click Start. Once it has finished downloading the portion of the mp3 file, it will open it automatically. I have basically tried many apps for such features but this tool stands out from the rest and best of all it’s free. The whole process was seamless and easy, and you will surely enjoy it!

Note: You can use this software to download the whole mp3 or avi file too, in my above example I was merely testing it’s feature by downloading a small portion of it.
