The official Spotify website boasts that the popular music service has about 15 million tracks in its humongous library. This is awesome when you know what exactly you’re looking for (or at least have a vague idea) but if you just want to spend some time listening to quality music, good luck browsing through all those tracks! That’s where Metafy enters the scene. Metafy is a music discovery app for iOS which uses MetaCritic’s (a popular rating service) data to rank Spotify songs according to a variety of criteria. So if you are an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch user and want to discover quality music you are yet to listen to, Metafy is for you.

The screenshot you see above pretty much sums up Metafy. It can be thought of as a rating system for Spotify tracks. The app is not, however, officially affiliated with MetaCritic or Spotify.

So coming to the app’s actual working, it is a pretty simple app covering the essentials and doing what it is supposed to do in an uncluttered, efficient way. There are two main sections in the app. You can browse latest releases timeline-wise, or based on the scores those releases have been given. The other option is to browse tracks on the basis of their all-time scores. This isn’t restricted to just new releases, but all the songs on Spotify.

The timeline browsing is pretty handy if you want to keep pace with the latest tracks hitting the market. The High Scores allows you to see which track was the most popular in any given year.

The app would have been a lot more useful if it came with customizable filters. Say, filters that allowed you to view the highest scored releases of a particular genre or artist. But even as it is right now, the app is certainly worth a try for all you music-lovers out there. And you have nothing to lose, as Metafy is available for free on the iTunes App Store.

Ever create a great playlist in Spotify and think your work of genius should be shared with the world, or your friends at the least? Or have you ever had one of those days when all your music was just boring you to death and you couldn’t find something better to listen to? ShareMyPlaylists is a web service that not only makes it easy to share your Spotify playlists on Facebook and Twitter but also with the ShareMyPlaylists community. It gives you access to a large library of user created playlists that you can browse in your browser but play in Spotify.

Sharing a playlist is a simple three step process. Copy the URL of the Spotify playlist you want to share. Click Submit Your Playlist! on the site and a panel will open. Paste the URL in the Enter Spotify URL field. The Playlist name will be entered automatically (same as the one you’ve given your list). Enter a brief description of your playlist, pick a genre and click Submit Playlist!. It gives you the option to generate artwork for your playlist by clicking Generate Artwork.

You can post your playlist on Twitter and Facebook the same time you submit it.

The site lets you play single tracks or entire playlists. Search ShareMyPlaylists for playlists generated based on a particular artist or for a particular song or artist. Click the play button and allow you browser to connect and play the track in Spotify. All tracks in a particular playlist are added to queued tracks in Spotify. To save them, create a new playlist and add all songs to it. You can also connect your Last.fm account to this service. The service also provides lyrics to individual songs.

Ever wanted to control iTunes or Spotify desktop player without having to open their main windows? In the past, we have featured iTunes menu bar controllers which allow playing and skipping through tracks from their menulets, such as, myTunesControl, MyTunesController, Bowtie, and Musica. Just like for iTunes, there are many tools available for Spotify too, such as, SpotiMy, Spotify Menubar, etc., which sits in menu bar letting users control Spotify streaming and track navigation. If you don’t want to clutter up your system menu bar with iTunes and Spotify menu bar controllers, you may want to have a look at DockPlay iTunes and DockPlay Spotify.

These tools are developed to control their respective applications from dock bar. For instance, if you want to control iTunes playback and navigate through current playlist tracks, put DockPlay iTunes control buttons in system dock to play tracks and skip through playlist items. Similarly, you can dock DockPlay Spotify buttons to control and navigate through lined-up streams.

Once buttons have added to dock, you can play track in the playlists of respective application and move through playlist items using playlist navigation buttons.

Don’t forget to enable option to keep DockPlay iTunes and DockPlay Spotify buttons in dock from Options menu to use them whenever you want to play iTunes and Spotify playlists. It works on Mac 10.6 or higher.

Spotify, despite being one of the most popular online music streaming service, doesn’t provide advanced options to enhance music listening experience. One feature which I feel is missing and must be integrated into Spotify desktop client is the audio equalizer. Spotify has a nice interface but when it comes to player related options, it only caters to basic features, like playback controls, track navigation controls, etc. Equalify is an audio equalizer for Spotify developed by a third-party developer. Instead of tweaking your sound card’s native audio settings, you can launch Equalify from within the Spotify UI to amplify and enhance the sound quality. It is a preset-based equalizer supporting as many presets as you can save.

Equalify places itself next to Spotify search bar. By default, it’s disabled. When you click EQ, a small 10-bands equalizer with AMP will show up from underneath the search bar. Click ON/OFF button to toggle equalizer on/off.

Equalify doesn’t provide other options to calibrate Spotify audio streaming quality. However, the proxy options lets you enter server details to automatically update the product. When you click the Presets button, it will show two options; Save and Delete. After adjusting the EQ settings, click Save and give the preset an appropriate name. Once saved, it will start showing up in the preset menu while the Delete option lets you remove previous presets.

Equalify not only prevents users from using other equalizers which open separately but also gives a more dynamic boost to your Spotify audio streams. It runs on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

Playlists, once created are the easiest way to listen to your favorite tracks; whether you’re jogging, working or trying to get inspired, you always have a set of songs ready for the occasion. What can sometimes be a pain is of course creating a playlist especially if you’ve grown tired of the ones in your current list and are looking for something new but similar. Spotify Playlist Generator is a desktop application that creates playlists for Spotify based on a single artist of your interest.

To create a playlist, type in an artist’s name and hit Generate Spotify Playlist and wait for the application to generate a complete list. It uses Last.fm to find songs that are similar to the artist name you’ve entered. Once complete, you can select all or just a few of them and copy and paste them to Spotify. Alternatively you can also drag & drop your selection on to your Spotify playlist.

The application only creates playlists based on the Artist name you enter and not based on a song or genre. The application is currently only available for Windows.

Spotify is a popular music service where you can listen to the music for free but hey, with free version comes advertisement which is run after every two or three song tracks. For some people it is fine because they get to listen to the music for free but if you really feel irritated, Smutefy is an ultimate application wich will help. It is developed to block Spotify ads while listening to your favorite music. It is a very lightweight system tray application that runs in the background and automatically detects and blocks Spotify ads. Search the good looking Smutefy icon in your Application folder to launch it. Once launched, it sits to right side of your menu bar. As it detects an advertisement, it changes the color and mutes the system sound. As soon as the advertisement finishes, it unmutes the system sound and lets you re-enjoy the music.

You can choose to automatically check for update daily, weekly, or monthly from the Preferences.

There is, however, one small catch, before running it you will need both ‘Growl’ and ‘Soundflower’. The former is used for notification, while the latter is used to forward audio from one application to another.

Spotify is no surprise growing at a very fast pace. It is the most popular music service in Europe and the desktop client, simply put, is “Awesome”. But like all other desktop applications it lacks some necessary features which is what brings you to this post. Spotify Tweaks is a simple addon for Spotify that adds additional functionality to the original program. In layman’s term, it acts like Spotify’s extension and adds six new features.

Spotify is the latest upcoming music service that is taking the world by storm. At the moment Spotify is only available in selected countries across Europe and will soon open in US. Spotify allows user to search and listen to their favorite music, if you like the song you can purchase it.

Today I came across a tool called Spotify Recorder. It determines when and what Spotify is playing and then automatically saves the song in mp3 format.

With a huge growth, Spotify will have to learn to live with such tools. Just take an example of YouTube, it doesn’t allows video downloads but there are so many 3rd party apps for this purpose.

Update: The app has been updated, now users can select a directory where they want to save songs, choose recording device, adjust bitrate, and normalize volume. Also the wav support has been enhanced and made stereo, the music will sound better now.

Spotify is the fastest growing music service in Western Europe and is soon going to expand to USA, Canada, and other countries. Even through the Spotify desktop app is liked by most users, there is one downside to it – no remote control support. Yes you heard it right, almost everyone wants to control Spotify from his/her iPhone or iPod Touch, but there is no way to do it, until now.

We discovered a rather clever method to control Spotify from any device and it requires SpotifyRemote app(kudos to the developer for releasing this awesome app). Before you read the step-by-step guide, make sure you have the following.

1. Spotify installed in Windows.
2. iPhone, iPod Touch, Zune or any device that supports WiFi and has a browser.
3. Both Computer and Device connected to the same WiFi network.
4. Spotify Remote Control app, download it here.

Once you are ready, extract the SpotifyRemote zip archive and copy the folder to a safe location. Run SpotifyRemote.exe file, select the port(default is 8080) and minimize it to the taskbar.

Note: If you want to test it, click the Test button. It is perfectly fine to close the browser later after you have tested it.

Now open Command Prompt by typing cmd in either Start Search or RUN dialog box. In command prompt, type ipconfig and scroll all the way up to find your computer’s IP address.

Now launch the browser in iPhone, iPod Touch, Zune, or any of your favorite device and type:

[IPAddress] : [Port]

Since my IP Address is 192.168.1.104 and port is 8080, I will type 192.168.1.104:8080 in my browser and hit Go. It will then load a simple interface from where you can control basic playback settings such as Play, Pause, Next Track, and Previous Track.

Note: It also shows the music that is currently playing, but you cannot see it in the above screenshot because Spotify is not yet available in my country.
