There are many task managers out there, we have covered some here, here, here and here. None of the above mentioned personal task management software have powerful notifications feature. If you are a heavy computer user, it is quite common to forget an important task. NotifyMe wants to change all that by introducing an app that alerts a user by showing an image, text overlay, balloon notification, and audio all at once. Guaranteed to make every user remember the important tasks, unless you are lazy.

It works very differently from both Growl and Snarl. You have to enter a custom message and choose the related settings. You can either set the time as countdown or select a certain time. To make sure the user never misses a task, there is an option to select full screen overlay, change desktop background temporarily, and display a pop-up window. For audio it supports both mp3 and wav format.

The notifications can fade in/out and repeat the process until the user stops it himself. Once a new notification is added, you will find it along with it’s preview on the main window. You can always save a set of tasks and open them later, comes useful when you need to migrate the tasks to another computer.

The balloon notifications are pretty straightforward as you can see in the screenshot below. It uses the default Windows notification feature to display the balloon notification.

You can choose to alert yourself of an important task via image, audio, overlay text, balloon notification, or all four at once.

Download NotifyMe

It works on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

Remember Doit.im, the awesome cross-platform software for task management that we covered a few weeks back. Earlier this month it got a huge update. The new feature list is so huge that I am going to list them all at the bottom of this post.

Among the new features, the most important IMO are using https(secure connection) to connect to server, sync tasks with Android OS phones(since the Motorola Droid has finally launched you might want to try out this feature), add friends as contacts for better delegation of operation, export tasks to CSV file, and sync with Google Calendar.

Some users were reluctant to try this service because of the lack of security, doubt on weather it would remain free forever, didn’t have the functionality to sync, and couldn’t share tasks with friends. All these problems are now fixed in the latest release 1.1, also the guys behind Doit.im now proudly state that the service will remain free forever.

The interface looks fresh with the new facelift, it is much more responsive and the features are now neatly laid down at the bottom of the app.

Copying the tasks to Google Calendar is a piece-of-cake, just hit the Sync Google Calendar button at the bottom, copy the iCal format URL to Google Calendar and you are done.

It has a Firefox add-on as well which allows users to quickly add the task while reading interesting articles over the web. Right-click any text, select New Doit.im task, enter your login credentials, and the new task will be added instantly.

The folks behind this app are dead-serious to compete with various other well known task managers. Hardly does a new service come out and launch an incredible list of features, we are going to keep an close eye on this one and so should you.

The complete list of features are as follows:

Support working on Doit.im offline, and sync with server once online

Doit.im on GPhone ( Google Android OS) can sync with PC

Use https to connect server

Integrate with Google Calendar

Conveniently review to-dos undone

Multi-pick to-dos to have them deleted, completed or dragged and dropped

Empty trash

Archive completed tasks

More hot keys, better keyboard operations: select all tasks in a list, switch to inbox and focus on quick-add.

Drag and drop a task in Projects to create a project by task title

Complete or Drag and drop a project

Add friends as contacts, Better delegation operation

Export to-dos as CSV

Tag management, add/rename/delete tags as needed

Attach tags to multi-selected tasks

Add url or file link into Task note

Invite your friend to use Doit.im

Send feedback to Doit.im directly

Download Doit.im

Doit.im Firefox Add-on

For those who don’t know, Doit.im is a cross-platform task manager developed on Adobe Air, read our original review to learn more about it. Enjoy!

It amazes me how many new to-do task management apps are out there. Everyone is trying to do their best to simplify the tasks. The most popular is Remember The Milk, a few days back we covered Doit.im which we assumed could be a serious competitor, and today we discovered another awesome task manger called PhiTodo.

Unlike Doit.im, it has a web interface build on Adobe Flash and also has a cross-platform Adobe Air client. Once you login, you are shown a dead-simple clean interface where you can start adding new tasks.

From the left sidebar you can create new items, simply right-click and select New Item, double-click the item name to rename it, or you can do all this by clicking the small options button.

On the top you will find the filter which allows users to quickly find the tasks. You can filter the task by various names, such as, Overdue, Today, Tomorrow, This Week, Next Week, Started, Starred, and more. To see the complete list, hit Options > Browse.

Once you have created a new item, select it and then hit Add Task button. In the new window you have to type the task name, give it a score, choose the date and the description. The score runs from 0-5 and is much like a priority.

Click the screenshot above to enlarge

Once you complete a task, check it and it will vanish from the main list. To see the completed task, go to More > Show History. You can move the tasks, edit them, add a star(give higher priority), and share it with other users(friends).

Click the screenshot above to enlarge

The awesome thing about PhiTodo is that both the web interface and Adobe Air client have the exact same interface. Do you love simplicity and ease-of-use? If yes, then give this app a shot. It is free and did I mention that you can also organize tasks into projects, group tasks, and see the time spend for each task?

PhiTodo

The cross-platform app works on Windows, Linux, and Mac. Enjoy!

When it comes to managing important tasks, we all love Remember The Milk but today I came across a newly launched service called Doit.im which could soon become a serious contender.

It is a free service that allows users to manage all types of tasks easily, it comes with a cross-platform Adobe Air app that works on Windows, Mac, and Linux. All you have to do is sign-up with them and start adding and organizing the tasks.

When you start the desktop app for the first time, hit the Sign Up button and fill the form as usual. It will then send you an email address with the password(which can be changed later).

Now sign-in with the email and the password provided and you will be taken straight to the main window.

You will also find two additional options, sign me in when Doit.im starts and start Doit.im when the computer starts. The user interface is much similar to that of Mac OS X.

On the left sidebar you will find Inbox, Today, Next, Tomorrow, Scheduled, Someday, and Projects.

Inbox is used to quickly collect and record To-Do Items when you considerate what to do in future.

Today shows tasks that needs to be done today, all items here will also be listed under Next from where you can review, evaluate, and arrange the tasks.

Tomorrow shows tasks that needs to be done tomorrow, they will be added to Today after 12 O’Clock Midnight.

Scheduled holds all tasks that are not in Today and also those tasks that have not been completed yet.

Someday holds tasks that you can’t commit now but plan to perform in future.

Projects holds all projects that needs to be done, it includes multi-step tasks.

Once you understand the purpose of every folder, using the app becomes a breeze. The tasks support drag & drop, you can drag and drop the tasks from one folder to another easily. You will find two more folders on the bottom of left sidebar – Completed and Trash. Completed will hold all tasks that have been marked as complete and Trash will hold the tasks that you have deleted.

Adding a new to-do task is quite easy, just hit the New button, enter the task name, tags, notes, and choose the due date, select if you want to forward the task to anyone, and finally choose in which folder this task should be added. There is also an option to repeat a certain task after every few days.

The option to forward the task is very useful indeed since it helps sending tasks to other Doit.im users. Once you send them, the tasks will appear in their Inbox folder.

Did I mention that it supports hotkeys too, you can manage and perform tasks by using simple hotkeys. To view the hotkeys or to modify them go to options and then navigate to Keys tab.

Sync and Options button are both together(See screenshot above). If you want to access your tasks from anywhere else, simply hit the sync button and it will synchronize all the tasks with the server.

The apps for Android, iPhone, Windows Mobile, and Symbian are coming soon according to the developers which will allow users to remain up-to-date with their tasks anytime, anywhere, and on any device.

The only downside of is that it doesn’t have a web interface, but that could probably change in future. Otherwise having said that, it is one of the best complete task manager I have come across and thankfully it is free.

Download Doit.im

Enjoy!

Update: Reader BrianC400 notifies us in the comment that this app seems like a ripoff of Things. Since Doit.im is developed by some Chinese developers(who have history of ripping off stuffs), surprisingly it seems 80% similar to Things. Anyways, the good thing is that Doit.im is cross-platform and free while Things cost $49.95 and is for Mac OS X only.

Update 2: Doit.im gets UPDATED, the latest version has plenty of new features. Read the full list of new features here.

Unlike other confusing to-do task managers, it is simple, quick, and easy-to-use. Just head over to File > New, enter the task title, tags, priority, and other details. When done, click OK and it will be added instantly to the list.

Once it has been added to the list, you can edit it later, remove it from the list, or mark it as complete, all by right-clicking the selected task.

The items completed and those left to be completed along with the overall progress are shown in the status bar. It also supports system tray reminders but is disabled by default. Head over to Edit > Preferences and check Obstructive mode(Alerts every 15 minutes about the incomplete items) to enable reminders.

Download mCheck

This simple app has been developed on Java and works on all Windows OS. According to the developer, the next version will also support sorting by tags, title, and priority. Enjoy!
