The official Android client of the well-known web-based task-management service, Nozbe, has been updated to v2.0 with a complete UI overhaul and a bunch of improvements, such as better syncing and integration with content stored on Evernote, Dropbox and Box, easier access to your personal notes, to-do lists, inbox, projects, errands, reminders and lots more. In addition, the app has received quite a few vital bug fixes and is now much more stable than previous versions. Details to follow.

The best thing in the entire update is that users no longer require to log in to the app to access and manage their locally stored notes, to-do lists and tasks. When launched, the app prompts users to either sign in with a Nozbe account to access their cloud content, or tap the plus (+) button at the bottom to start adding and saving their notes/tasks locally.

As far as improvements in the UI are concerned, the updated Nozbe client for Android provides better and easier browsing of your Inbox, Next (upcoming) tasks and Projects. From within the Inbox tab, not only can users check their upcoming, completed and most important tasks, but also filter them by the different types of content that it supports (Tasks, Notes, Evernote, Files).

As mentioned earlier, the updated version of the app now supports better and faster syncing with all your notes, tasks and documents stored on any supported cloud service that you’ve affiliated with the client. From any where within the app’s interface, just hit Menu > Sync to update all the content manually.

Despite receiving such a massive update, Nozbe still remains free in the Android Market whereas its iOS counterpart is priced at $4.99.

Back in 2010, we reviewed Librarian, a Windows 7 library manager that helps you conveniently manage Music, Videos, Documents and Pictures libraries. It lets you add, edit and delete existing libraries as well as create new ones. Recently, the application received an update, fixing all the reported bugs such as crash on opening properties of empty libraries created with default Windows Explorer. Other than the bug and crash fixes, it can now allow you to add multiple folders at a time to Libraries.

The main interface of the application is same as before. Click the New Library button and enter the library name to create a new library.

The configuration menu of the selected library lets you change icon, select Library Type and Add folders to the library.

As mentioned earlier, it can now add multiple folders to specified library; you can select all the required folders, and add them to an existing or new library. Just navigate to the folder you wish to add, select it and then click Add Selected Folder button. When all folders are added to the list, click Add available at the bottom.

Some time ago, we covered an application for Windows named Click.to, which lets you save mouse clicking for performing lengthy tasks by providing you with links of all popular websites and frequently used applications. It integrates with the Windows clipboard copy action, and provides you with quick access links to user specified applications. Click.to has updated its arsenal of websites & applications, and has added Skype to the list. Users of Click.to are now capable of calling any phone number from anywhere on the desktop, using Skype.

To enable Skype in the Click.to application list, choose it during installation or select it from Options menu.

Select phone number from your desktop and copy it to your clipboard. The specified application list will appear on your screen. Click the Skype icon to initiate a Skype call directly without having to manually enter numbers into Skype.

Note that you will have to allow access to Click.to in Skype when using the application for the first time. Click Allow Access to enable Click.to access to Skype.

As announced on the official Dropbox forums, a preview build of the updated (v1.3.0.6) official Dropbox client for Android has just been released, an APK of which is now available for download. Apart from getting a taste of the Ice Cream Sandwich UI, the updated client brings plenty of new features for Android smartphones as well as tablets. These include better and quicker access to your Dropbox content, batch-uploading files to cloud and quick access to favorite content while offline. The updated client also brings a new native gallery to help you select/upload your photos and videos with ease. Preforming various file and folder actions such as renaming, deletion, sharing et al have also been made quite convenient. Details to follow.

As mentioned earlier, the UI of the updated Dropbox for Android has been completely overhauled with Ice Cream Sandwich-style tabbed navigation. Support for preforming uploads in batch is also a welcome addition, as is the option to easily rename files and folders on your Dropbox cloud.

While exploring your Dropbox content, tapping the small arrow icon displayed beside each folder reveals a drop down menu that contains all aforementioned options (Share, Delete or Rename). The dropdown menu for files has additional options such as marking a file as Favorite, exporting it to another installed app or saving it to SD card.

The app’s new native gallery displays thumbnails for all your local photos and videos. This, along with bulk uploading, makes it much easier for you to save local media to your Dropbox cloud.

Apart from adding all the aforementioned features, the updated client has seen numerous bug fixes and performance enhancements.

WordPress is certainly among the most extensively used blogging tools and online Content Management Systems out there. The official WordPress client for Android has been around in the Android Market for quite some time now, but compared to the website itself, said client was a far cry in terms of the editing features that it offered. However, things have changed quite drastically with the recent update that the app has received. The updated (v2.0) WordPress client comes packed with a brand new Dashboard, post editor and Quick Action toolbar with rich text editing options as well as full support for Android tablets. The new dashboard displays all the core WordPress features and is accessible from almost anywhere within the app’s UI via a button that sits in the top-right corner of the screen. Among other options on the bar at the top of the app’s homescreen, you have the choice of switching between multiple blogs from the dropdown menu, and refresh the app’s content manually.

The aforementioned Quick Action toolbar remains visible just above the keyboard while you’re editing your posts, while in previous versions, you had to scroll all the way to the bottom of the post to find them. Not only does the new toolbar make it extremely easy to edit text and add required media content, it comes packed with a few new options as well, such as inserting quotation marks and page breaks. Tapping the camera icon on this toolbar lets you capture fresh photos or videos, import existing media from the gallery, and add it to the post. For each image that you add, you are presented with the choice to rename it, insert a caption, adjust its alignment and dimensions. Each post that you create can also be previewed before publishing, that is, you can view what the post will look like on the blog itself, and determine if you need to make any changes to the format.

A lot of users would agree that the current version of the app is what it should have been from the start. These seemingly minor changes have increased the usability of the app manifold, making it a tool that could actually eliminate the need to use the WordPress web interface for bloggers who tend to move around a lot. The official Skype client for Android that has been satisfying a majority of users for quite some time, just got even better with its latest update (v2.6) that, in addition to adding support for quite a few more devices, brings a new, more polished homescreen, the option to send photos, videos and other files to your Skype contacts, voicemail and battery enhancements, better video quality for Tegra devices, auto sign-in and a more user-friendly method to sign out of the app. Details to follow.

Apart from the new icons, you will also notice a new button in the top-right corner of the app’s homescreen. This button lets you sign out of the app with a single tap, without having to open the app menu (Menu > Sign out), as was required in previous versions.

You’ll find the new Send file option under the Actions tab on a contact’s screen. Tapping said option opens your device’s local storage, allowing you to share any file with the selected contact. Files received from other users can be found within the /sdcard/Download folder. The option to send files to your contacts is undoubtedly a handy addition, however, it would’ve been much better if this option had been integrated within the messenger interface as well. Lets hope the developers add said feature in future updates.

Remember Iris? It’s one of the very first Siri-inspired apps to land on the Android Market. Although not as feature-rich as other similar Android apps, Iris has been doing pretty well on the Market so far, and for good reason. The app’s capability to indulge in friendly chitchats with users, launch apps and call/text your contacts via voice commands inspired a few Android fans so much that they judged it to be even better than the iOS voice-recognition assistant itself. If, for some reason, Iris hasn’t been able to impress you thus far, the latest additions to the app just might. The latest update not only brings a bunch of new query types, but also lets you ask Iris to play you videos (which are played within the app) and fetch the lyrics to a song of choice. In addition, the app can now supports being launched from anywhere in the OS by holding down the Search key.

Long-pressing the search key brings up the Complete action using menu that will contain the Iris option.

As mentioned earlier, Iris now takes voice commands from users to search for and play videos, show lyrics of requested songs, read horoscopes, fetch recipes for dishes and keep you apprised of the latest news and stock prices. Videos are played within the app’s interface.

That’s not all; you can now also get movie recommendations from Iris. To our utter surprise, not only was the app able to fetch useful results for our movie-based queries, but also supplemented those answers with comprehensive movie details, star cast, ratings, release date and much more.

The latest update makes Iris an even stronger contender among similar apps out there. There are, of course, better Android apps out there (some a lot older than Apple’s Siri) that let you control various aspects of the OS through voice commands, but that is not what Siri is primarily about. It’s more about having a virtual assistant that you can chat with and ask questions about anything, and that is what the developers seem to be expanding towards.

iOS has enjoyed deep integration with Twitter ever since iOS 5 rolled out, but Twitter itself isn’t lying dormant by any means, as shown by the update rolled out today for Twitter’s official iPhone and iPad app. The famous micro blogging service updated its web version recently, and those changes are now reflected in the iOS app as well. Not only has the interface been completely revamped, the app now has a bunch of new options and features too. Head past the break to find out everything about the new Twitter.

If you are already signed in to Twitter when you download the update, then you will miss out on an attractive new feature added to the app. Log out to see the beautiful new welcome page that shows a different background image every time. Sign in and you will be greeted by a whole new Twitter. Although a lot of people don’t like it, one has to admit that the overall appearance of the app is rather neat now.

If you look at the bottom of the app’s screen you will notice that all the sections have been changed. The Connect section lists all the Mentions you have received as well as the interactions of other users with your account. Using the Discover menu, users can see the latest trends and hottest news on Twitter, and find out if there are any suggestions on which people they should follow. The search bar present in this section is helpful in finding tweets and users related to a particular hash tag or term. Direct Messages can now be found under the Me tab. Said section of the app also allows you to view your complete Profile along with all stats related to your Twitter network. A rather interesting option here is Saved Searches, which is a log of all the terms and users you have ever searched for.

As mentioned earlier, it seems a lot of users are unhappy with the new Twitter, but I personally didn’t find much wrong with it. The update makes the app more attractive in terms of looks, and it certainly makes it easier for users to find things they would really be interested in. The development on Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin is fast-tracking ahead, and perhaps one of the most discussed features among Ubuntu users regarding Precise Pangolin, is it’s scrollbar. The opinion of the overlay scrollbar has always had a mixed reaction. While some seem to like it, others simply can’t stand it. If you are a fan of the overlay scrollbar, then you might be interested in updating your Oneiric scrollbar to the Pangolin one, which is available for OS version 11.10 with all new improvements.

The new overlay scrollbar has come with improved thumb appearance, extension of the proximity area to cover the entire window edge, new thumb positioning in accordance to the mouse pointer and bar position. The thumb is now more freely movable, jumping is now triggered using middle-click or via Shift + Button1. The below image displays a comparison of both scrollbars, with the left screenshot displaying the old scrollbar, whereas the right screenshot displays the updated (Ubuntu 12.04) scrollbar.

To install the new overlay scrollbar, simply add the following PPA to software sources, and update it.

The official Facebook client for Android has undergone a massive change in terms of interface as well as features with its latest update. To put it simply, the updated Facebook client for Android resembles the looks and, in many ways, functionality of its iPhone counterpart. The UI has received a complete overhaul, with all your friend requests, messages and notifications arranged at the top as separate buttons that can be tapped to reveal their contents within a bubble. The app now also lets you search for, access and filter all the required Facebook content in a much more convenient manner, explore photos much faster, view your friends’ tags on them and access your friends lists and subscriptions. Last but not the least, the update adds support for push notifications and the Timeline feature, that is, if you have it enabled for your account).

One of the best things about the new UI is the left sidebar that can be reveal by tapping the More/Menu button in the top-left corner of the screen. The left sidebar provides you access to the search bar and all major sections of the social network from almost anywhere in the app.

The updated client not only renders photos much faster but also displays tags included with them (if any). You can now also remove posts from your Facebook profile page. Anything that you’ve Liked or Recommended on a webpage or posts that have you tagged can be instantly be removed from your Wall with a swipe. If you find a post on your profile that you wish to remove, swipe across it from right to left (preferably from the top of the plus button). It might take more than just a few tries to get it right the first time, but when you do, you’ll see a Remove button appear on top of the post. Tapping the button will remove the post from your profile page.

Log file analyzers come with a built-in auto-update feature to let users view latest changes made to log files and most recent events reported by deployed solution. If you want to bring the auto-update feature to Notepad++, add Document Monitor to Notepad++ plugin list. This plugin comes useful in instances where you need to check shared documents for changes, and also to analyze long log files. Since Notepad++ requires you to re-open the document to view the changes and latest modifications, Document Monitor saves you not only the time, but also the effort, involved in finding the file and scrolling down the document to view the latest changes.

Document Monitor doesn’t only work for active document; it monitors all opened documents and updates them after every 3 seconds. You can install the plugin from Plugin Manager or download the DLL file (link given at the bottom of the post), and copy it to Notepad++/Plugins folder to install the plugin. When installed, you can enable and disable document monitoring from Document Monitor menu.

Once the monitoring process starts, open all those documents that are to be consistently checked for changes and updates. As mentioned earlier, it updates the document after every 3 seconds. Sadly, it doesn’t allow you to customize the document monitoring time intervals. Hopefully, developer will design a configuration console to tweak the default time interval and select documents that users want to monitor.

Evernote – the groundbreaking cross-platform note-taking service -  has just updated its official Android client (to v3.3) with a handful of goodies. Apart from several new features that have been added to the Evernote client itself (details later), we now have the Evernote Widget available as a separate app on the Android Market. Using this widget, users can now easily access the core Evernote features right from their homescreens regardless of whether the app itself is installed on your SD card or internal storage. The app itself now supports even better integration with Evernote’s drawing app, Skitch. Furthermore, you can now easily share your notebooks on the fly with either your contacts or anyone via public URLs. Details to follow after the jump.

Although previous versions of Evernote came packed with the home screen widgets, you weren’t able to use them if you had the app stored in the SD card. This is what prompted the devlopers to launch Evernote Widget (the app), which only works with the latest version (3.3) of Evernote.

The updated client itself, now lets you annotate images using Skitch directly from within the editing interface and easily transfer notes to Skitch and vice versa. What’s more, you can now edit an existing picture (attachment) and add it to your notes by either updating the original attachment or appending a copy of it to your notes.

With the added notebook sharing options, you can now generate public URLs of your Evernote notebooks and share them with your friends via email or over social media. In addition, you may also edit access privileges for specific users (available with the premium version only).

Apart from all the aforementioned features that have been included with the client, there are several bug fixes that have been made as well to provide you with a much smoother and faster note-taking experience.

The official Yahoo! Weather app for Android has just received a major update with plenty of new features. Amid all the other visually attractive, highly informative and feature-rich weather apps that are already present on the Android Market, why should a user consider yet another alternative? Well, for one, because this one comes from Yahoo! (enough said!), because it ticks all the aforementioned criteria that makes a weather app worthy of a consideration, and third, because it sports quite a few unique features of its own. For instance, real-time crowd-sourced photos from Flickr that approximately depict the exact weather ‘feel’ of selected locations, accurate and extended weather details from The Weather Channel that can be seen by just titling your device, option to receive up-to-date weather forecasts for as many as 10 different locations of your interest, an equally interactive homescreen widget that replicates a miniature version of the app itself and keeps you apprised of current weather conditions for each selected location, and lastly, the price of the app, $0. At its very core, the updated Yahoo! Weather app can be deemed as an attempt at infusing features of crowd-sourcing apps with the weather-related apps (just like Weddar). The concept of the app seems to be inspired from Fickr’s Project Weather concept, which is meant to crowd-source multiple images of different locations of the word, each portraying current weather conditions in that particular region to give the users (especially the travellers) a better idea as to how the weather actually feels/looks like in a certain area, rather than informing them about its temperature and other complex meteorological parameters.

The app, when opened, displays the current weather condition, 5-day weather forecast and a relevant background image. Swipe on the screen to get an idea about the weather forecast of another selected city of the world. Adding a new location is simple. From the app’s homescreen, tap Menu > Locations and sign in with your Yahoo ID. Tap on the plus (+) sign and enter a location of your interest. Provided you’ve added some of the more known names/cities of the world to your locations, chances are bright that the app would be able to find a perfectly matching image for each location. Unlike other alternative weather apps, Yahoo! Weather sports the least cluttered homescreen, yet presents you with the most sought-after weather information. Still, if you just want to enjoy the scenic images (and not the weather) of all the various locations, just tap anywhere in the middle of the app’s homescreen and swipe left/right.

Looking to get a quick peek into the weather conditions in more detail? Just tilt your phone (in landscape orientation) to find extended weather details including sunrise/sunset time, barometer, visibility, wind direction, feels like (temperature), dew point, moon visibility, wind speed, humidity and more. For an even more detailed forecast, you can tap the Extended Forecast button to navigate to The Weather Channel website. While tapping on the bottom-left of the app’s homescreen takes you to the official Flickr website, the share button on the bottom-right of this screen lets you share the weather for a particular city along with corresponding photo via Facebook, Twitter, email and more.

That’s not all. The app’s elegant little widget adds flair to your homescreen by frequently circling all the added the locations along with updated weather forecasts and relevant images of each. Even though the app (as of now) is missing HD videos, it also means less stringent storage requirements on your device as compared to some of the other alternative apps such as BeWeather, Weather+ et al, that sport said feature.

Contrary to what Facebook fans might believe, Google+ isn’t going anywhere. It’s here to stay and that’s why the folks over at Google are taking its updates pretty seriously. Just a few days ago the Google+ app for Android got revamped via a pretty big update (which we covered in detail) and now its iOS counterpart has been updated too. The changes are not as major as the Android update, but still, include some very welcome and long-awaited features. Head past the break for details.

I was really annoyed when Google+ didn’t let me sign up for an account using my work email, which happens to be a Google Apps account. But finally Google+ has added support for Google Apps accounts, and this change is also reflected in the iOS update. That is, you can now log in to the Google+ app with any Google account (even if it doesn’t end with “@gmail.com”).

If you are a fan of Facebook and prone to hitting the “Like” button on every other photo you come across, then you must surely have missed this feature in the Google+ iOS client, but not anymore. With the new update, you can +1 photos in addition to adding comments to them.

Now we come to our favorite new feature of the update. In the Google+ messenger, while chatting with your friends, the app will display if they are available or not. This will be manifested in the form of a green border around the display picture of the friend who is available to chat. Also, when that friend is typing a message, the app will display a notification reading “Name is typing…” right above the message field. The Messenger section of the app has grown to become quite a competitor of Facebook’s Messenger app and some other third-party social network messengers.

However, we came across a slight hiccup in said section during our test-run of the app. While using the updated app on our iPhone 4 and iPad 2, we noticed that the typing notification and presence indication only work when both parties are using an iDevice. While chatting with a colleague who was using Google+ on his Android phone, the iOS variant of the app did not show any indicators.

The rest of the app remains pretty much the same, and no major changes have been made to the user interface. In addition to these changes, the official update description lists that the app has also gone through a few performance improvements  and bug fixes, although there weren’t a lot of bugs in the app in the first place.

Among many other updates that have been introduced with the fresh version of the app, the most significant one is its extended personalization. What that means is that users can now connect to the app with their social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Google+) and certain reading-related web services (Instapaper, Read It Later, Trip It, Evernote, Google Reader) to get personalized news feeds based on your areas of interest. In addition, the app now supports saving articles to your device for offline reading and automatically syncs all the saved content over the web so that you may be able to access it across various devices. As of now, the updated version of the New360 app has been rolled out for smartphones only. Android tablet and iPad owners might have to wait for a bit longer.

The app lets you enjoy a personalized news reading experience on your device based on the content it fetches from your Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader, Google+ and Evernote accounts. While saving an article within the updated News360 app is simple, syncing it to the cloud is even simpler.

To save/bookmark your favorite news story, just tap on the small plus (+) button at the bottom-right of the screen. All saved content can be accessed by hitting the play icon and tapping Saved. To sync saved content across various platforms, just pull the screen down and release it. That’s it; you can now access your favorite content either via the News360.com website or on any other device (requires the same login credentials, of course).

Any video embedded within a story can be played within the same page by hitting the Play button.

A new version of the official Android Market app (v3.3.11) seems to be in the pipeline and good news  is, its APK is now available for download on the web courtesy of a leak from Android Police. While the interface of the updated Market retains more or less the same old looks (icons and fonts seem much denser), it’s on the app’s settings front where some very major (and much-awaited) changes have been made. The new Market adds better control over app downloads, as users now have the choice to auto-update all apps at once, update apps over Wi-Fi only and configure the Market settings to automatically add shortcuts of each newly installed app to the homescreen. To add to the long list of updated features, the latest version of Android Market now displays star ratings of each app in a bar graph (the same way the website does) and allows you to search for apps via voice commands. While said version of the Android Market seems to be working fine with smartphones, it seems it isn’t too friendly with Honeycomb tablets (far too many glitches). More after the jump.

Most of the changes mentioned above can be seen within the app’s Settings screen with added toggles for Auto-update apps, Update over Wi-Fi only and Auto-add shortcuts.

As for the auto-update feature, any apps that demand new user permissions still need to be updated manually (quite understandably so). However, for all other apps, users no longer need to check the Allow Automatic Update option for each installed app individually. Same holds for the post-installation auto-add shortcut feature that can help you save substantial time (and effort) that would otherwise be wasted in locating the app within the app drawer and placing its shortcut on the homescreen. The update over Wi-Fi option is likely to be greeted warmly by users who want to avoid receiving updates over mobile data.

The new star rating graph on the download screen of each app is quite a  welcome addition and a definite improvement over the previous interface.

If, for some reason, you are facing too many force closes after replacing the older version of Android Market, then navigate to Menu > Settings > Applications > Manager Applications > Market and hit Clear Data. This should solve the problem.

The official Google+ client for Android has just been updated to v2.1. While most of the updated features which the users got to see in the leaked version (2.0) of the app at the start of the previous month have been retained, there are quite a few other notable changes that the updated client brings with it; the most significant of them being the option to logout of the app – handy for users with multiple accounts. For those users who, for some reason, couldn’t take a peak at the leaked version of the app, the official update sports a totally revamped UI that resembles the looks of the latest Android OS variant, Ice Cream Sandwich. Other than that, almost every facet of the app has undergone a change of some sort; be it a new notifications panel, the Stream, Circles, Photos or Profile screen, the unexplained absence of the homescreen widget and even the Messenger title, which we believed could so possibly have been renamed yet again (this time to Chord) as it was in the leaked version. Details to follow after the break.

So, what does the updated client actually add in terms of aesthetics and new features? An Android 4.0 style graphical interface, relocation of the notifications bar to the top-right corner of the homescreen and of the Posts, About and Photos tabs to the top of the Profile screen, improved Photo gallery with enlarged thumbnails and the option to switch between images in full-screen, improved Circles with profile pictures of all contacts displayed in thumbnails besides each and optimized battery consumption along with several bug fixes.

In addition, the app supports easy addition of new people/friends to a Circle. While within a Circle, just hit the Add People button at the bottom, pick your friends from the list and tap OK. Also, the client now allows logging in with Google Apps accounts as well.

Apart from the Messenger title, another feature that has (thankfully) been retained from the previous official version is the ability to share photos in Messenger by hitting the camera icon beside the message field – a feature that was, rather surprisingly, discarded in the leaked version.

However, there is one very major feature that has actually been omitted from the updated version. Apparently, the leaked version wasn’t missing a widget because it was incomplete; Google was actually aiming to remove the homescreen widget from the smartphone variant of the client. That’s right. No more widget.

Twitter enjoys deep iOS integration in the almost-released iOS 5. But to complement these changes, the official Twitter app was also in great need for an iOS 5 update, and that’s exactly what it has just got. The biggest (and most welcome) change you will find in the update is the app’s ability to upload photos with automatic link shortening. Twitter users have wanted that feature in the iOS app for quite some time and this will surely bring a lot of added convenience to the platform’s fans. An updated version of the Google+ (v2.0.0) app apparently meant for the much anticipated Ice Cream Sandwich installment of Android has just been leaked onto the internet by the guys over at Android Police. An APK of the app is now available for download (links provided at the end) if you wish to take it for a spin before the official release (probably somewhere around the time ICS is released). The latest version seems to work on most Android devices and brings quite a few noticeable changes; in the interface though, and not in terms of functionality. For starters, Messenger (previously known as Huddle) has now been renamed to Chords. Apart from that, there have been other minor changes to the overall UI of the app which we shall explore via screenshots and brief details after the jump.

The revamped interface of the app certainly looks well-polished. If you’re looking for the notification bar on the homescreen, you won’t find it at the bottom anymore. Instead, it has been condensed and repositioned at the top-right side of this screen.

Also, as you can see from the very first screenshot (above), Messenger has been renamed to Chords but serves the same purpose as before. To our surprise, the camera button (for sharing photos) that was previously visible besides the text message field on the messenger screen has been completely eliminated.

Tapping the Circles button on the homescreen unveils a pleasant sight though. We’re not referring to the shift of the Circles and People tabs to the top but to the contacts from your various circles whose profile pictures are now displayed in thumbnails along with their respective circle.

Another noteworthy change in the new interface of Google+ can be seen within Photos. The tiles/thumbnails have been enlarged while the About, Photos and Posts tabs have been relocated to the top of the screen to mirror the interface of Ice Cream Sandwich. One other thing, the update seems to be missing the homescreen widget for phones.

First of all, the big news: TuneIn Radio can now run in the background! This may not be such a big deal for other platforms but it is a relatively new feature for Windows Phone 7 apps. Once a station is playing, it appears in the top volume bar just as the stock radio channels appear.

The home page has 7 categories with a bundle of radio channels from around the globe. Pick one and you will be awed by the number of channels under it. But still if you don’t find what you are looking for you can simply search for any channel by name, genre or location.

The Local Radio option is pretty amazing and makes use of your current location to suggest channels near you. The streaming rate is pretty good and a moderately good connection will suffice. If you really like a station, you can save it to the presets section. TuneIn also comes with the ability to pin any channel of your choice to the start screen. If you are into listening to Podcasts, the app helps you with that too. And for all that, it costs you nothing. That’s right. TuneIn Radio is absolutely free. Couple of weeks back we reported regarding Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread update for Google Samsung Nexus S. Although the update did upgrade the OS version to 2.3.6, but one major flaw was broken Wi-Fi Tethering. Concerned Androiders and Nexus S owners debated this issue for quite some time. Apparently an all new Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread update for the Google Nexus S is on the roll again but this time with fixed wireless tethering and a different build code. The build number of this update is GRK39F whereas previously it was GRK39C. As the update is pretty much similar to what rolled out previously, it is apparent that there is no changelog available for this one.

The users who have received the update have claimed a fixed tethering and wireless issue. We believe that this update is a must have if you updated your phone previously on 2.3.6 and ended up with broken Wi-Fi and tethering. This update requires you to be on GRJ22 build.

In case you want to check if the update is available for your phone, go to settings > About Phone  and tap on Software Update. Once you get an update availability notification, follow onscreen instructions to detail to get your phone updated to Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread.

The update should reach your Phone OTA, Over the Air, and if that’s not the case, then follow the instructions provided here to do a manual update:

Important Note: The manual update or OTA update is only meant for users without root access on their device. If you are root and want to apply this Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread update with fixed Wi-Fi and Tethering, then its bets to wait for custom ROM that is based on this build. AddictiveTips will not be responsible if you end up with a bricked device following this procedure.

1. The first step is to download the update from here, rename the downloaded file to update.zip and save it on your desktop.
2. Once done, connect your phone to the computer via USB cable that came with the phone.
3. Now mount your phone as SD Card and copy the Update.zip file present on your desktop to SD Card extension root.
4. Once you have the file placed on your phone’s internal SD Card partition, power-off your phone.
5. After you have powered off your device, reboot your phone while holsing Volume up key along with power button.
6. Now select Recovery using volume button.
7. Now you will see Android logo with exclamation mark on the screen. Keep pressing Power and Volume Up buttons together until you see recovery mode.
8. Once you enter recovery mode, Select Apply sdcard Update.zip option and wait for the process to complete installation.
9. After the procedure completes, your phone will reboot into Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread.

The wait is finally over and Mango has now seen the light of day. But not so fast. For all the Windows Phone 7 enthusiasts out there, Mango might still be a few annoying days or even weeks away. The size of the WP7 community isn’t as small as some think and this is the reason the complete roll out across all carriers and to all device models will take about a month. Some of you might be lucky enough to have received the update by now. However, if you are not among those lucky few, you can force update to Mango from Nodo using the handy little method described below. If you have already tried this method unsuccessfully, then skip straight ahead to the important note at the end of the post.

Everyone hates waiting, and if you can’t stand to wait for Microsoft’s fruity goodness, there is a way to skip the queue and get Mango right now. The method is pretty simple and harmless. Although, no one is quite sure why it works. All that is certain is that it really does the trick.

Disclaimer: Please follow this guide at your own risk. AddictiveTips will not be liable if your device gets damaged or bricked during the process.

Prerequisites:

1. Zune client (preferably up to date).
2. Preferably 50% battery (at least) remaining in your cell phone. You can check the exact battery percentage using the diagnostic menu.
3. Remember that even though the procedure is pretty easy, it will take a lot of time. So be ready to part with your phone for about an hour or so as more than one update will most probably be required to get Mango, and during most of the procedure the phone will stay in download mode.

Instructions:

1. You will have to start by plugging in your phone to the PC. This should automatically launch Zune.
2. Once Zune is running, go to its Settings menu (next to the close button), and then from the menu on the left, choose Update. If the application indicates an available update, then congratulations, you are among the lucky few who are getting Mango this early. However, if it isn’t there, proceed with the next step.
3. To get the update in Zune you will need to disable your PC’s internet connection. Click on any other option in the side bar except Update (for example, you can click on Linking).
4. Now get your hand ready for whichever way you have chosen to disable your internet connection (say pulling your network cable, turning off WiFi, switching off your router or simply disabling the connection from Internet settings), but don’t disconnect just yet.
5. You have to disconnect the internet connection as soon as you go back into the Update menu (from the left-side bar). Do it as quick as possible otherwise it won’t work. If you succeeded with the timing, there will be an update notification from Zune after about a minute and the small “update” button will become active in the Update menu.
6. If no such thing happens, don’t panic. We didn’t get it right the first time either. Keep repeating step 5 until you get the notification.
7. When you finally receive the update notification, proceed with the update (Zune will guide you through it step-by-step).
8. Go back to Zune and wait for the next update note to appear. It should pop up in a minute, but if it doesn’t, you can use the Step 5 method again.
9. After this second update has been installed, a third and last update notification will appear. Let Zune run its course and finish the update.
10. Once step 9 has completed, check your phone settings’ About menu. The OS version should be 7702, which is Mango.

Important Note:

Most users have experienced problems using this procedure as you have to get the timing exactly right to force the update. Some users can’t get it to work and their Zune messages keep switching between “Phone is up to date” when PC’s net is on, and “Can’t connect to server, check your internet connection” when internet is disabled. Here are a few things you can do if step 5 refuses to work for you.

• Try using a different PC to apply the method.
• Restart your phone and computer,
• If all else fails (as it did for us), do this: Turn on your PC’s internet connection. Make Zune check for updates by clicking on another option in the menu on the left. Now click back on the Update option and while Zune is still checking for updates, turn off your PC’s connection and at the same moment turn on your phone’s Wi-Fi (if you have an active mobile data connection, this should not be necessary, but try it nonetheless). Doing this got us the update on our Samsung Omnia 7 and HTC HD7.

So I guess this also solves the mystery of how Zune is getting the update when your computer’s connection is off. We believe it might be using the phone’s internet connection in some way.

However if your device has the leaked RTM or beta version of Mango installed on it, you might have to use our guide to restore Nodo on your device before you can use the above mentioned procedure.

Android Market 3.1.5 is silently rolling out on select Android devices as we write. The new market version has been confirmed from various sources and some industrious hackers have already juiced the APK for your installation pleasure. There isn’t much known regarding this “minor” Android Market update. Our Nexus S received a silent update to the latest version a few moments ago. We believe that it’s a security fix with some other minor essentials on board while some users have reported an apparent increase in speed.

So in order to see what’s new in this Android Market version, here are the instructions:

1. The first step is to download Android Market 3.1.5 from here and save the file on your desktop.
2. Once done, connect your phone to the computer.
3. Now mount SD Card as flash drive and copy the download Vending app file to SD Card root.
4. After you are done copying, disconnect your phone from the computer.
5. Now download ES File Explorer from Market.
6. Launch the file explorer after installation is complete and navigate to where you copied the Market app on SD Card.
7. Now tap on the app icon and follow onscreen instructions to complete installation.
8. Once the installation is complete, exit from file manager.
9. Now launch Market to see if everything went as planned.

If you see the new version of the Market, then you are all set to explore and download apps. And if its contrary to what you expected, then try to reboot your device, clear cache and then re-launch the Market.

The official Google+ client for Android has received a timely update (to v1.0.7) with a plethora of useful features that would surely help it compete better with some of the other hot-running social apps among users (Facebook in particular). For starters, it adds support for the much anticipated group video chat feature better known as Hangouts. Also added to the updated client of Google+ for Android are some other sought-after features which we shall delve into after the break.

If you have an Android device with a front-facing camera and Android 2.3 or above, then the news of the addition of Hangouts to the Google+ client would surely delight you. For other users, it’s just a matter of time before this feature is available for their devices as well. We put the Hangouts feature to test on our Nexus S with quite satisfactory results. To our (rather pleasant) surprise, an active Hangout session keeps running in the background. To alert you of your active Hangout, the app displays a notification icon in the status bar.

Glancing at some of the other features included with the updated Google+ client for Android, we find that users can now set their profile pictures from within the app. Other noteworthy additions made to the updated client include sharing photos in Huddle (now known as Messenger), long pressing on posts in stream to +1, share and mute them and improved SMS support (for users in India only). In addition, the app brings enhanced public search and App2SD support along with extensive settings for your Google+ notifications.

To set a new profile photo, just tap on the Profile button, tap on the profile photo thumbnail, then pick one from the gallery or simply grab a fresh one instantly from your camera.

As mentioned earlier, Huddle is now called Messenger and allows you to share photos with your contacts. You will notice a camera icon besides the text message field on the conversation screen. If you’re the adventurous, risk taking, alligator wrestling type of geek, then it’s possible that you prefer to use experimental versions of browsers as opposed to the stable ones. While following nightly developer builds is more of a developer thing, a common user might take to using developer versions to get his/her hands on the latest features. Nightly builds for both Chrome and Firefox are released and while it is easy to update the Firefox build, it isn’t as easy to do so in Chromium (Chrome’s nightly build). Chromium Auto Updater is an auto updater utility that updates your version of Chromium on a daily basis. It works solely in the background and does not require you to restart Chromium.

Install the program and you’re ready to go. It will automatically update your current version to the latest one. After installation and the first upgrade, the utility will run an update at 8PM daily. Other than that, it remains dormant and does not run continuously in the background.

Alternatively, you can update the Chromium version manually. Go to the Start menu and look for Chromium Auto Updater in Chromium files.

The utility installs and updates Chromium which means you won’t see any installer files. A command prompt window will open and you will be able to see download progress.

Once download is complete, the utility will upgrade your nightly version. You don’t have to exit the browser while it upgrades and no restart is required once upgrade is complete.

The command prompt window will close on its own once Chromium has been upgraded. The utility is great if you you don’t like to start every morning off with a file download or doing a manual browser upgrade.

Insider has been around for quite a while as it is Microsoft’s official app for getting users started with their Windows Phone 7 devices. But frankly, it wasn’t really worthwhile, covering a few very basic aspects of this amazing platform which in no way did justice to it. But with Mango just round the corner, change is in the air. The Mango update of Insider has just been released, and it brings a bucket of welcome changes to the app.

Insider has expanded its range of coverage to several areas now. But before we get to that, for those who don’t know what Insider is, here is its functionality in a nutshell: Insider strives to keep you in touch with the official world of WP7. It brings you the latest tips and tricks regarding the OS, suggests the apps and games which are currently hot in the Marketplace.

But that was the pre-Mango version of the app. Now the categories cover the following:

• Tips: This section contains the things you might need to get started with a new phone, or even if you are an experienced user, you might find something interesting here.
• Apps: A few days back, we covered App Flow which was an amazing app discovery service for Windows Phone 7. While the Apps section of Insider might not be as comprehensive as App Flow, it effectively serves the same purpose, namely, suggesting new apps in the market which are currently popular with users.
• Games: Pretty similar to the Apps section. It displays games currently trending in the Marketplace.
• Wallpapers: Personally I love the Bing search engine integrated with WP7, even though I never used Bing before I got my Samsung Omnia 7. The one and only reason for it is the constantly changing backgrounds Bing search sports along with interesting tidbits of information. Insider offers you all these images to be downloaded as wallpapers to your phone.
• Ringtones: That’s right. Ringtones! Mango has finally solved the long-standing issues of using ringtones other than the ones provided by default (as we covered earlier). Insider makes use of this new ability and offers 5 new ringtones each month which can be downloaded to your device’s ringtones section simply by tapping the ‘+’ button in front of each tone.

The official Facebook client for Android has just been updated (to v1.7). The latest update to one of the most downloaded apps on the Android Market adds a flurry of options that would surely delight Facebook addicts. The update brings pull-to-refresh (for selective screens), image swiping and better privacy controls along with advanced tagging/sharing options and other minor performance tweaks too. What’s best is that the latest updated Facebook client is now available on the Tablet Market too, from where it went missing without any apparent reason a few versions ago. Details on updated features and screenshots to follow.

The aforementioned features would help bring the official client of said service much closer to its web interface with almost all the sought-after features (and even more) available to the users on their Android devices. For starters, the update adds a very useful pull-to-refresh option that allows users to simply drag/pull down their Facebook News Feed, Profile and Messages screens in order to refresh them upon request. The old style of tapping the Menu > Refresh button to refresh said screens has been retained.

The most noticeable and welcoming change in the entire update is indeed the image swiping option which means that users can now easily swipe through all images within an album in full screen instead of switching between them by pressing the left/right arrow buttons (hated doing that myself).

Next in the list of recently added features are the enhanced sharing and tagging options. In this regard, freshly included Photo, Status and Check-In buttons on your News Feed screen allow you to easily post images/videos, share status updates and check in at various locations with just a few taps.

Integration of Tag People and Tag Location buttons in the new Status Message screen means that users can now easily tag friends and locations with their posts (as can be seen from the screenshot below). Tapping on the Tag People button lets you easily tag friends in your posts. Tagging friends in pictures has also been made possible.

You can also let people know of your whereabouts with the Add Location button. Add Location feature is optional and can be turned on/off as you like. Remember that all the tagged people and/or their friends may also see the posts in which you, your friends or anyone else has been tagged. In addition, you may opt to review a tag that others have added to your posts. There is also a button on (the right of) this screen that lets you share your posts with just your friends or with everyone.

The latest update also adds better Inline Privacy Control, meaning that users can now manage their privacy settings in order to allow/disallow specific people who can see and/or comment on your posts.

Note: The Everyone label (as it was previously known) has been changed to Public in the latest update (v1.7) of Facebook app for Android.

Google Nexus S is primarily a developer phone which makes it lucky enough to get first taste of any Android update that rolls out. According to count less sources, Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread is rolling out for Google Nexus S right now. The new update is basically targeted towards fixing the notorious voice search bug which in some instances is becoming a deal breaker all together. However there are multiple claims of different blogs, forums and portals that this Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread update for Google Nexus S basically breaks your phone’s tethering capability altogether! We don’t know what to make out of this, but if these rumors stand to be true, then it’s better not to update to this version unless it is clear if tethering works or is broken.

According to various sources, the update is available over the air for Canadian Nexus S users. We don’t know exactly when it will reach your device but the time lapse shouldn’t be more than 24 hours. In case you are root and want tp upgrade to this new Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread update for Google Nexus S, then a better approach will be to wait for a custom ROM that comes with this update’s framework as base. This will not only ensure safety but developers might also tinker with this update to to re-enable tethering capability.

As of now, the people who have downloaded and upgraded to this version are reporting a total loss of tethering capability on their phone.

In case you want to check if the update is available for your phone, go to settings > About Phone  and tap on Software Update. Once you get an update availability notification, follow onscreen instructions to detail to get your phone updated to Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread. Once you are done updating your device, cross check if voice search works and also try to setup tethering to see if it is broken in your case too.
