It seems that internet is fast replacing the conventional way of watching TV shows. The recent Mortal Kombat web series is one such example. After merely a few hours of being released on the internet, it has now gone viral. This seems to be a good tactic to check market response for TV shows and potentially movies before producing high budget formats. For example, there was initially a small video released showing the trailer for a potential Mortal Kombat movie reboot and after an overwhelming response, Warner Brothers have now released this webs series. In fact many famous TV shows like “V” provide free podcasts via Hulu and YouTube after an episode is aired on a TV channel. This seems to be ironing out the copy rights issue of reproducing or watching TV shows for free.

ted or Torrent Episode Downloader (Not to be confused with Ted Talks) is a tool for searching and downloading TV show episodes via bittorrent. ted comes with a built-in list of shows for you to download. It also displays a summary of each program to help you identify and sort TV shows. ted downloads reliable torrent files for your shows and passes them to your bittorrent client. It can be used with Azureus, uTorrent, Tomato Torrent, Transmission or other torrent clients.

Just click on the Add button (from the main interface) and select a TV show from the list to download or search episodes for. You can go through this list to search for new episodes, download old ones and find a related DVD to buy. Make sure you check the Download in HD checkbox to get the best quality episodes. Click on the episode name followed by the Add button to select the episode for downloading. You can also click on Add a Custom Show button to add your own feed for downloading TV shows (e.g. Podcasts of TV shows).

You can check for new episodes, delete a show from the list, disable automatic schedule (for finding new episodes), edit show details, etc by right clicking on the added programs name.

For advanced options, head over to the Extras menu and select Preferences. The General tab can be used to schedule searching for new episodes of the added shows after a time interval, e.g. every 60 minutes, managing the default destination folder for the downloaded Torrent file, etc.

The Look and Feel tab allows configuring logging of errors, starting ted at system startup and getting alerts for new Torrent files that are found by ted. Likewise, the Advanced and Network tabs allow setting torrent parameters and setting proxy configurations (if required).

Disclaimer: It must be noted that while some shows like Kiefer Sutherland’s “ The Confession” is a web series and freely available, however, there are many shows that might not be available for free or can have copyright issues regarding their unauthorized distribution. Many Windows and Linux users who download content via Torrents, use uTorrent or Azereus (now known as Vuze) Torrent clients. This can be quite helpful in  avoiding bandwidth loss due to seeding a torrent file (such as for users who do not have unlimited downloading packages from their ISPs).

Like all other Torrent clients, Ktorrent resides in the system tray, from where users can also manage a number of common options.

Magnet Links is a technology which is going to be used extensively in the future, some sites now provide Magnet Link alongside .torrent file.

The .torrent file identifies a file by location or name, the Magnet Link on the other hand identifies a file by the content; in layman’s term, by the content’s hast value. This means if the .torrent file is no longer available you will still be able to download the content. Sounds cool, right?

There are two quick ways of generating a magnet link from the .torrent file, using uTorrent(the popular Bittorrent client) and Magnetizer(a tool that nobody has heard about before).

Copy Magnet Links From uTorrent

Open .torrent file with uTorrent, right-click the torrent, and select Copy Magnet URL from the context menu.

uTorrent fully supports magnet links, instead of downloading .torrent file from Piratebay or elsewhere it is more easier to grab the Magnet link. Once you click the Magnet Link it will open the default torrent client(in my case it is uTorrent) and start downloading the torrent immediately.

Convert Torrent File To Magnet Links With Magnetizer

Instead of having to first add a torrent to uTorrent and then copy the Magnet Link, the best way is to use a small portable tool called Magnetizer. Just add the torrents and hit Magnetizer, it will start the torrent in your default torrent client. And yes, it can also be used to batch convert the torrents into magnet links.

So what is the purpose of this tool? It is useful if the host takes down the .torrent file and the trackers are no longer available. There is actually a build-in option to fetch more trackers.

uTorrent is by far the most popular windows desktop client to download torrents. Even though it works flawlessly for me in Windows 7, some people are having trouble using it. There are reports in various forums that uTorrent exceeds memory limit and shoots up to 100% in other cases some downloads will stop at 99.9%. In few cases uTorrent shows false reports and works oddly.

uTorrent is not the first app that is encountering such problems, Mozilla Thunderbird was also having trouble running in Windows 7 for some users. I have listed few fixes below that might help your uTorrent to act normally.

1. Right-click uTorrent and go to Compatibility tab. Here, select Windows Vista under compatibility mode and make sure that it is checked to run under Administrator privileges. See screenshot below.

2. Make sure you have added uTorrent in Firewall Exception. This step is just a reminder for those who might have forgotten it.

3. Go to Preferences > Advanced > Disk Cache and make sure both Disable Windows Caching Of Disk Writes and Disable Windows Caching Of Disk Reads are checked. This can help reduce the I/O Reads and I/O Writes, thus resolve the HDD speed and overload problem.

Have you ever wondered why your direct downloading gives you more speed than your torrents? Do you want to know how to increase the downloading speed? The default settings of any torrent client will always gives you slow downloads because your client doesn’t know which type of connection you have. Every torrent client needs to be tweaked so as to increase the download speed. Today we will show you how to increase your torrent’s speed without using any any complex software, you’ll see the difference in downloading speed.

Here we are using utorrent v1.8 as an exemplary client with a 256k connection. We won’t waste more time, lets start changing the settings.

Connections Pane:

Change Your Network Settings

In Connections pane, Under “Port used for incoming connections”, enter any port number. It is best to use a port number above 10000. Mine is 17590 as shown in the pic.

Randomize Port Each Time Utorrent Start

This option randomizes the port each time utorrent starts, which is highly unnecessary, UNCHECK it.

Enable UPnP Port Mapping And NAT-PMP Port Mapping

If you are manually forwarding your port than keep it UNCHECKED, but if you dont know what port forwarding is or you’re not forwarding the port manually than CHECK it.

Add Utorrent To Windows Firewall Exceptions

UNCHECK it if your windows firewall is disabled, try disabling the Windows firewall whenever using torrents, because Windows firewall literally hates torrents, it won’t allow to increase the speed ever.

Bandwidth Pane:

Global Maximum Number of Connections

This option lets you “the number of connections made to your torrent”, it should not be set too low and not too high either, if you’ll set it too low, the torrent wont be able to connect with seeds and peers, if you set it too high it will cause too much bandwidth wastage. For 256K connection 130 is optimal. for other connections you can calculate it by this formula: upload speed x 80%

Maximum Number of connected peers per torrent

70 (for 256k) is optimal for other connections use this formula: upload speed * 1.3

Number of upload slots per torrent

Optimal setting for 256k connection is 3. To calculate your settings, try this formula: 1 + (upload speed / 6)

Use additional upload slots if upload speed <90%

it should be CHECKED.

Maximum Number Of Download Speed

It may sound interesting not to limit your download speed, but it greatly affects the downloading if set to unlimited. To calculate this setting use:

download speed * 90%

BitTorrent Pane:

Enable DHT Network

Its highly recommended to CHECK this option, it highly improves the speed.

Protocol Encryption

It is recommended to either select FORCED or ENABLE for this option, This can help increase speed in many ISPs.

Enable DHT for new torrents

CHECK it.

Enable Peer Exchange

CHECK it.

Ask Tracker For Scrape Information

CHECK it.

Enable Local Peer Discovery

CHECK it.

Limit Local Peer Bandwidth

UNCHECK it.

Advanced Pane:

Net.max_Halfopen

The default setting in Windows XP for maximum connections is 8 which is not optimal enough for torrents to connect to seeds and peers. The best way to increase the number of half open connections is to increase the value for 8 to 50 to 60, too high or too low will decrease the download speed drastically. We will have to apply a patch too to increase the default value (in Windows XP SP2 only), you can apply the patch from here, this patch will increase the half open connections on OS level.

NOTE: Windows update sometimes revert this setting back to default one, so its better to keep checking every now and then.

Peer.disconnect_inactive_interval

Increase the value from default 300 to 600, it also increases the download speed.

Download this free software utility and apply the optimal settings, it will apply the most appropriate setting of your Internet connection. You can download this software from here.

Handling Firewall

If you use any firewall, Go to its Preference or Settings and find an option with tag ‘Allow list’ or ‘Programs’. Add utorrent or any client you’re using in allow list, save the settings when You’re done. In Windows firewall, you can add an exception of your torrent client too.

How To Configure Your Router

1. Go to start | run |type cmd, in command prompt type ipconfig, press enter.
2. Note down your ip address and default gateway.
3. Type in your default gateway into your browser’s address bar, a password prompt may come up. The default username and password are admin for some routers, if you use a username and password to connect try using that.
4. Under ‘Applications’ fill out one line for each p2p client you use
5. You need to use your ip address, the correct port range and set either tcp or udp
6. You can change the ports in the actual p2p client’s settings, just make sure they are the exactly same in the router too.
7. Save your settings.
