vReveal is an application for editing videos, creating panorama images (from videos), and grabbing video snapshots. It comes with many basic video editing features, and is easier to use than Windows Live Movie Maker. Using vReveal, you can add titles, fix sharpness, color and contrast issues, stabilize a shaky scene, and save edited videos in numerous video formats. Read on after the jump for our full review.

By default, vReveal scans your Videos, Pictures and Desktop directories for locating media files. However, you can select specific directories as well.

Once a video is detected, click Edit to start editing the video. Using the available options, you can add/remove video frames, adjust video sharpness, change aspect ratio, add/adjust effects, white balance, saturation, focus etc.

Other than editing videos, you can also create panoramas from imported video frames.

Once you are done editing the video, it can be saved in WMV or AVI formats. It is worth mentioning that vReveal has both paid and free versions, and the option to edit and save videos in HD-format can only be achieved using the paid version. Furthermore, video editing and saving the output video is limited to 240p and 480p in free version, and other formats like 720p and 1080p (HD formats) require bucks. However, you can can edit and save HD videos to lower resolutions, hence circumventing the limitation to some extent. While saving a video, you can also adjust the video quality by clicking Advanced button, and moving the Quality slider.

You may also share your edited videos on Facebook and YouTube, using the sharing buttons at the bottom of vReveal interface.

Although vReveal is quite a handy and easy-to-use video editor, which can be of immense convenience for novice users, it does come with a few drawbacks. These include the above-mentioned editing restrictions, and the fact that it displays ads during installation as well as an Upgrade button on the main interface. On a personal note, I found vReveal editor to be a capable application with easy options and acceptable limitations in its free version, as it does not display watermarks (except a few seconds at the start of the video) for the saved videos, and provides video editing for videos up to 480p resolution, which should be sufficient for most casual users. The program works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Avidemux is a free open source video editing tool designed to cut, filter and encode videos to numerous formats. It is quite popular in the open source community but underrated elsewhere. It supports a huge set of file types, including popular formats, such as, AVI, MPEGs, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs. Click Open to import video, go to any frame, and select start and end points, using Start button (A button) and End button (B button), to cut a video.

Head over to View menu to manage zoom options, whereas decoding, frame rate, filtering and other options can be set from Video and Audio menus. From Tools menu, calculate the bitrate (same option present on the main menu as the Calculator button), rebuilding frames,  viewing bitrate histograms, scanning for black frames, etc. The Auto, Go and Custom menus contain options to stop, play, pause videos, to switch between frames, and so on.

After a project has been successfully edited, you can save it in multiple formats via the Save button (after specifying a desired format). Tasks can be automated using projects and job queue from the Add Job option in File menu. The Edit menu provides basic cut, copy, paste options, along with a Preferences feature that allows setting automation parameters.

Avidemux is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux based operating systems.

We have reviewed Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010’s noteworthy features here. The great news is that PowerPoint 2010 not only lets you embed videos into your presentations rather it also provides tools for video editing.

First of all, learn how you can embed videos into a PowerPoint presentation. Once you have embedded the video in the slide, start using the built-in Video Editing features of PowerPoint 2010 to enhance your embedded videos and make them look better.

Please note that in the guide(link given above) we only wrote about embedding online videos, but you can also embed video from file. It will automatically compress and optimize the embedded media for improved playback in presentation. It supports the following formats(including audio):

• AVI
• WMV
• MOV
• H.264
• MP3
• WMA

Now lets see the operations that included in PowerPoint 2010 Format tab. You can easily trim an unwanted section of the video, can apply different styles like fading edges, 3D rotation, live reflections, etc to your videos, and can also color the video if you think it is not matching the background of your slide.

In the screenshots below you can see how easy it is to trim a video.

There is a separate section for applying Video Shape, Video Border, and Video Effects.

Under Corrections you can adjust Bright and Contrast of the video by choosing the desired value.

Click the Video Correction Options and a new window will open which contains tons of options that can be performed on the video.

The Border Color and Border Style options located on the left sidebar, let you edit the border color and style of the video, shadow and reflection effects can be added from the Shadow and Reflection options. You can perform 3-D operations on the video using the 3-D Format and 3-D Rotation option. The Crop option lets you crop portions of the video. Simply specify the video position and other crop parameters like Width, Height, Left and Right etc and you are done.

The Size and Position options let you adjust the exact size and position of the video. You can add the Video’s Title and description from the Alt Text option.

All the above discussed options are under the Format tab, you will find other editing options under the Playback tab. Options to Trim Video, Fade In/Out, and Playback are neatly laid out for the users(see screenshot below).

Great thing about Eyespot is it allows you to apply special effects, transitions and even audio dubbing to your videos. The videos can also be send to your mobile phone via MMS. It also lets you embed videos to any webpage. Max video upload limit is at 100mb which is enough for a 20 minute video.

Photobucket

Photobucket enables video editing within a browser using Flash and lets users remix their photos and home videos with other elements, such as music, video captions, and transitions. Photobucket also provides a simple service that enables you to store, share and publish your visual digital content online. Images and videos can be directly linked from Photobucket to any site.

Motionbox

Motionbox’s tagline is “Personal video sharing made easy,” and the implication is that it’s more like a Yahoo! Photos(Flickr) or Picasa Online for videos — a way to make your videos available to friends and loved ones without sending huge files. During uploading, it displays a progress bar for each individual file as well as for the overall upload status. Unlike some other online video editing services, Motionbox is not about mixing still pictures with video and sound, so there’s no uploading photos or audio. It is a nice looking service, but it just doesn’t do very much. A few special effects—even just transitions and loops—would make it more appealing.

Vivia-The Video Editor

Vivia is a video editing program for Linux and Windows. It provides extremely easy editing of clips and transitions in real-time, along with multi-camera support for editing scenes that were recorded by more than one camera simultaneously. One of the most interesting feature of vivia is that it has crash recovery. I can’t tell you how many times you freak out over a crashed application that doesn’t save your work. It also does real-time changes when edited so you can see the results right away. I would certainly like to see more formats supported, but the overall interface is great and is quite easy to understand.

Blender

Blender is a widely used open source application for 3D modeling and animation. Perhaps not so well known feature of blender is its ability to edit video and audio, thanks to its sequence editor. In fact, it is a full blown non-linear editing module, which allows to apply numerous effects, as well as doing simple tasks as blending clips together, adding transitions, etc.

I have been using it recently to do some basic video editing, and I think it keeps up quite well in comparison with other, more “professional”, video editing tools. Since blender has its own unique interface, which doesn’t follow the conventions adopted by other programs (it is heavily optimized for a keystroke-oriented workflow), it might be a little bit difficult at the beginning, but once you learn the basic elements of the interface, is in fact very intuitive.
