CodexCloud is a web app that intelligently recommends new e-books for you to read, and lets you search, upload and catalog your entire library. It allows you to open e-books on an online reader sporting a nice, landscape mode, and allows automatic wireless synchronization with all of your mobile devices - Kindle, iOS and Android. Each book has a brief summary and author info that can help you decide whether you want to read it or not.
CodexCloud has a simple layout, enabling you to efficiently add and search your desired books. A list panel is present to the extreme left of the page, and right above the page are HOME, UPLOAD, BOOKSHELF and SEACRH options. The Lists category has My lists, Recommended to me, Most popular, Most recent and All my uploads. CodexCloud lets you upload books in a only a few simple steps, using either Add by URL, Upload from your computer or use the Mass uploader (.epub only).

Using any of the lists, you can easily add any book to your library using drag & drop. You can also give different names to your lists. The recommended list is populated on the basis of the types of books you read.

You may search books and sort them by Author name, Newest editions or by Title. Once you have added books, you can access them from the My lists or All my uploads option.  Each book has three options linked with it, allowing you to click to set as read, remove the book from the list or open it on an online reader.

As stated above, the online book reader has a landscape mode, making reading  a more worthwhile experience. A small icon is displayed at the top-right corner of the page; use it to navigate to the next page.

You can also configure your mobile devices, which is an added advantage. Once configured, your book lists will be automatically synced to all the linked devices. CodexCloud has compatible applications for iOS, Android and Kindle.

Netsh is a Windows command-line scripting utility to locally or remotely, display or modify the network configuration of an active computer. Vistumbler is an open source wireless network scanner to keep track of total access points, signal graphs, and statistics. With Vistumbler, you can find Wireless access points using “netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid” to get wireless information GPS Support Export/Import access points from Vistumbler TXT/VS1/VSZ or Netstumbler TXT/Text NS1 Export access point GPS locations. Vistumbler provides quite detailed information about available Wireless Access Points, which can enable finding security vulnerabilities in a wireless network.

For best results, the developer has recommended that you should disconnect from all access points while scanning for networks, as the results from Netsh seem to be more accurate when you are disconnected. Click Scan APs to begin the network scanning process. This will display active and dead connections, signal strength, channel, authentication procedure, encryption procedure, authentication type, latitude, longitude and Wireless Access Point’s manufacturer information. Such a scan can be quite handy in  checking out specific details about your available Wireless Access Points and to determine if they are secure enough for your network. For example, some Wireless Routers are configured and maintained by ISPs on behalf of large companies, in such a case the ISP may not be providing enough network security for your routers, which can result in security vulnerabilities. You can use Vistumbler to get in-depth information about your Wireless Access points and determine if they are secure enough.

The available information can also be viewed in graphical form by clicking on Graph 1 or Graph 2 buttons. The above mentioned information is displayed with both the graphical and default view.

You can use Options menu to enable use check Auto KML, Auto Scan APs on Launch, Play sound for all active APs, to use native WIFI and for checking debugging information.

Do you have multiple networks and would like to manage them all in one place? NetSetMan is a free tool for Windows that lets you manage up to 6 different network profiles. Did you ever forget your wireless network password? Or maybe you want to recover the keys of the wireless network in the office or at your friend’s apartment.

WirelessKeyView is a free portable tool for Windows that allows you to instantly recover your lost wireless network keys. It has been developed by Nirsoft, the same guys that bought you OpenFilesView, OutlookAttachView, and Asterisk Logger among many others.

Just extract the zip file and run the program, it will list all the networks and their keys in a simple list view.

Note: There are many software available to find and manage WiFi networks and I have covered few here on this blog, but this is the first time I have come across a WiFi gadget for Windows 7/Vista sidebar.

Xirrus Wi-Fi Monitor is a gadget for Windows 7/Vista sidebar that lets you monitor WiFi networks around you and shows the information of your connected and nearby networks in full details. It has a radar like graphic interface which helps you monitor the status in real time.

Once you have installed the gadget, open Windows 7/Vista sidebar. Now right-click sidebar icon and select Add Gadgets.

Now double-click Xirrus Wi-Fi Monitor or simply drag it to the sidebar, it will automatically detect the networks and show you some basic details in the sidebar. You can select the adapter and change some basic settings by going to Properties. It has nine different color skins available, you can choose the one that suits your theme.

Click this Gadget to see the complete details such as number of networks, their details, statistics, etc.

Do you want to create a quick network connection between two computers or laptops to share some files? Or maybe you want to share an internet connection? Windows 7 and Vista have a build-in feature to create a quick ad hoc wireless network connection, this means you can connect directly with another computer or laptop without the need of a router.

To begin, click Start and select Network. Now click on Network And Sharing Center as shown in the screenshot below. If you can’t find Network, then type Network in Start Search and hit Enter.

Now in the left sidebar, click Set Up A Connection Or Network. From the list select Set Up A Wireless Ad Hoc(Computer-To-Computer) Network option and click Next.

Click Next again and it will ask you to type a Network name and select the Security settings as shown in the screenshot below.

Make sure you select a good password, if you don’t know which security type to select, click on Help Me Choose link next to it. After you are done click Next and the Network connection will be ready.

Now in the Network And Sharing Center you can choose what to share as you can see from the screenshot below.

To Share an Internet Connection, click View Status next to the connection that you want to share. Now click on Properties button which you will find under Activity.

Click on the Sharing tab and tick the checkbox where it says Allow Other Network Computers To Connect Through This Computer’s Internet Connection. Under Home Networking Connection select Wireless network Connection and click OK.

Now your connection is ready to to shared. To enable the wireless network connection you just made, go to Start and click Connect To.

You will see your wireless connection listed there. Select your connection and click Connect.

You will see a success message as shown below.

You will see your connection listed under Wireless Network Connection on the other computer. Simply connect from there and you are done sharing the internet connection.

Note: To connect successfully make sure the wireless hardware is enabled on both computers or laptops.

Today, enterprises are deploying wireless LANs for corporate applications and home users that involve e-mail, Web browsing, and access to various server-based databases. The need for higher data rates and techniques to improve performance of wireless LANs is becoming crucial to support these types of applications. To get that extra performance, you may have a lot to consider.

Select The Right Physical Layer

An important element that impacts the performance of a wireless LAN is the selection of the appropriate Physical (PHY) Layer (i.e., 802.11a, 802.11b, or802.11g). 802.11a offers the highest capacity at 54Mbps for each of twelve (maximum) non-overlapping channels and freedom from most potential RF interference. 802.11b provides 11Mbps data rates, with only three non-overlapping channels. 802.11g will eventually extend 802.11b networks to have 54Mbps operation, but the three non-overlapping channels limitation will still exist. Of course requirements dictate needs for performance, which will point you toward a particular PHY. If you need maximum performance, then 802.11a is the way to go, but you may need more access points because of the weaker range it has compared to 802.11b.

MIMO ANTENNA

If you are using 802.11g – consider getting an MIMO antenna (which allows faster speeds at greater distances.)

Replace Other 2.4 GHz Devices

You may need to replace your 2.4GHz cordless phones with either a 900Mhz or 5.8GHz style cordless phone due to interference. These phones and other nearby wireless LANs can offer significant interfering signals that degrade the operation of an 802.11b wireless LAN. These external sources of RF energy in the 2.4GHz band periodically block users and access points from accessing the shared air medium. As a result, the performance of your wireless LAN will suffer when RF interference is present. So obviously you should strive to minimize sources of RF interference and possibly set the access point channels to avoid the interfering signals.

Properly Set Access Point Channels

The 802.11b standard defines 14 channels (11 in the U.S.) that overlap considerably, leaving only three channels that don’t overlap with each other. For access points that are within range of each other, set them to different channels (e.g., 1, 6, and 11) in order to avoid inter-access point interference. You can also take advantage of the automatic channel selection features that some access points offer. With 802.11a, this is not an issue because the 802.11a standard defines separate, non-overlapping channels.

Maximize RF Coverage

If access points are too far apart, then some users will be associating with the wireless LAN at something less than the maximum data rate. For example, users close to an 802.11b access point may be operating at 11Mbps; whereas, a user at a greater distance may only have 2Mbps capability. In order to maximize performance, ensure that RF coverage is adequate and spread out nearby for optimum performance.

Same Router And Network Adapter

Choose your router and network adapters from the same company. Manufacturers usually have a proprietary “turbo” mode that only works when using both their router and network adapters. As a side benefit; your overall configuration is usually easier.

Upgrade Your 802.11b

Upgrade your 802.11a and 802.11b devices to 802.11g, which is much faster, and is backward-compatible with 802.11b devices, although a small one room environment (i.e. apartment, dorm room) with no future expansion should use 802.11a.

Wired Connection

Whenever possible, connect computers using a wired connection! Yes, this is an “Anti-tip” because you’re not even using the wireless network – but a direct connection is dramatically faster and more secure!

Wireless Router On Central Location

If possible, place your wireless router (or access point) in a central location. Obviously, the closer you are to the access point; the better. But do not necessarily place the device on your roof (or up too high) – 4 to 6 feet off the ground is perfect.

Update Your Windows Wireless Network Driver

Update your Windows Wireless Network Driver. While Microsoft Update, is “supposed” to notify you of updates to your drivers – it’s best to visit the manufacturers website to double-check. Updates usually only add a new feature, or increase stability and security; but sometimes can improve performance.

Update And Upgrade Your Router

Update your Router’s firmware. Most routers easily update their firmware directly from their software. Updates add new features, increase stability and security; and also sometimes help in improving the performance. The antenna that comes with your device is usually a low powered and omni-directional. Upgrade to a more powerful (powered) antenna. If your router is near an outside wall, get a high-gain antenna that focuses the wireless signals only one direction.

Portable Computer Antenna

Even though it’s more convenient to have a portable computer’s antenna horizontal – it should be oriented vertically (up & down).
