Cast Your YouTube, Twitter, And Reddit Feed To Chromecast [Android]

A while back we reviewed an Android app called Trending Videos Cast that searched for trending videos on YouTube and other popular media channels. It then cast those videos to your Chromecast saving you the trouble of finding and queuing them yourself. The app, as we noted in our review, left much to be desired for but was nevertheless a pretty good concept. Scarlett for Chromecast is a free Android app that addresses many of the areas where Trending Videos Cast was lacking. Apart from the much more sleek and clean interface, the app can connect with your YouTube and Twitter accounts and display the feed from each one. It can also cast videos popular on Reddit and comes with a nice dashboard for when the app is idle. Read More

How To Disable Notifications For Recommended Videos From YouTube [Android]

YouTube for Android has received an update and of all the features that might have been implemented in the new version of the app, notifications for recommended videos is one of them. The update has brought some great features with it like an in-app editing tool but this new type of notification is going to get your attention before anything else. The new notifications do not appear when you open the YouTube. They appear like any other notification would in the Android Notification area. It's just another way the app will distract you with videos that are trending and match your previous viewing preferences. Fortunately, the YouTube app has a way of shutting them off. Here's how. How To Natively Loop Videos On YouTube To Play Repeatedly

If I ever have a song stuck in my head, my go-to solution for getting rid of it is to listen to it on repeat a million times. I normally use YouTube to listen to the song because I know it's going to be there and it's just super easy to find. What has been slightly less easy in the past is setting a video on YouTube to loop. It has an auto-play feature that will automatically start playing the next suggested video unless you disable it but up until yesterday, there was no option to loop the same video to play over and over. YouTube has just integrated the option in the right-click context menu that appears when you click inside the media player. Read More

Watch YouTube Videos With Friends In Perfect Playback Sync

Last year, a friend and I decided to watch a movie together. We decided we'd do this not by being physically present in the same room but by watching at our homes at the same time so we could make fun of it and cringe as needed since it was a bad movie. Surprisingly, we couldn't find a service that would let you sync movie playback and we didn't have much fun. The point is syncing video playback across two systems that aren't on the same network isn't easy, except in the case of YouTube videos because ShareTube exists. It's a little web app that lets you create a 'viewing' room and invite friends to it. You can search for and queue videos from YouTube to watch and it ensures that playback is synced for everyone in the room. Read More

Add An ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ Button To The YouTube Search Bar [Chrome]

Google's I'm Feeling Lucky button isn't used much. Most things that the average person Googles aren't answered by the very first search result. In the event that you're visiting a popular website like Apple, Amazon, or YouTube, you already know the URL to it and don't need to Google it. The same can't be said for videos on YouTube. Let's say you wanted to check out the music video for the latest single released by your favorite artist.  You would of course search for it on YouTube. The first result will be the video as published by the official channel that you will click through to watch. Youtube I am feeling Lucky is a Chrome extension that saves you a few clicks and adds an 'I'm feeling lucky' button next to the search bar in YouTube. All you have to do is enter the name of the video you're looking for and click it to go to the first search result. Read More

Use The Hashtag Symbol To Find An Artist’s Music Only Channel On YouTube

YouTube is where you can find and listen to just about any song you want. For even the more obscure, underground, and not-so-widely distributed songs and artists, chances are you can find their work on  YouTube. What some people might not know is that for some of the most popular artists, there exists an exclusive Music channel by them. The music channels feature only audio and no videos. The quality of the sound is often better and it makes for easier streaming compared to listening/watching a Vevo video. Unfortunately, a simple search on YouTube will not lead you to the music channel. To find it, you need to add the # symbol before your search. Read More

Play YouTube Videos In Any Aspect Ratio You Want

YouTube is by far the most popular video sharing service on the internet. Not only can you upload as many videos as you want but the site also makes it easy to share them either via social media or by embedding. The embed code is provided by Youtube and all you really have to do is copy and paste it. That said, if a video has aspect ratio problems, or while attempting to change the size of the video player, a video's aspect ratio has been upset, there's no easy way to change it. Stretch.site is a web app that lets you play a YouTube video in just about any aspect ratio. You are free to change it to any size while the video plays. Read More

Play Music From YouTube & Soundcloud From The Title Bar In Chrome

YouTube isn't just the largest collection of videos on the internet, it's also where you can find the largest collection of music videos (artist produced and fan made). People create playlists of music on the site and it's often used to listen to music as if the service were a radio. The problem with listening to music on YouTube is that you're also streaming the video which is unnecessary load on your internet connection, and you have to keep the site open in a tab. Meet UpNext Music Player, a Chrome extension that lets you play music from both YouTube and Soundcloud from the title bar. You can search for music, create playlists, and even import them. It also features top charts of trending music from various genres that you can listen to. Read More

Automatically Play/Pause A YouTube Video When You Switch Tabs [Firefox]

YouTube's play/pause keyboard shortcut doesn't work all that great. If you're wondering why you've never heard of said shortcut it's mostly because it doesn't work. You may have hit the shortcut multiple times and never realized it wasn't working. The shortcut is the space bar and nine out of ten times it will just scroll down on the page instead of pausing the video. With the shortcut rarely working, it's inconvenient to pause a video on YouTube before you switch to a different tab. What I normally do is hit the hard mute key on my keyboard to stop all sound if I need to mute it in a hurry. Smart Pause for YouTube is a Firefox extension that will automatically pause a YouTube video when you switch to a different tab, and automatically play it when you return to it. Get The Space Bar To Pause YouTube Videos Instead Of Scrolling Down [Chrome]

YouTube supports keyboard shortcuts for playing and/or pausing a video. These shortcuts, as fas as using them in Chrome are oddly temperamental; sometimes they work and other times they do not. It has something to do with where you clicked outside the video player. In my personal experience, playing around with the shortcuts has sometimes yielded success and other times not. If the shortcuts were to function flawlessly you could play/pause videos with the spacebar. Hit the spacebar now though and it's more likely the page will just scroll down instead of pausing the video. If you're a Chrome user, there's YouTube Pause. A simple extension that works in the background and gets the spacebar shortcut to function properly. Read More

How To Disable The New Autoplay Feature On YouTube

YouTube is rolling out a new autoplay feature. It's a lot like the autoplay feature you see on Hulu where the next suggested video is automatically played after 3 seconds if you do not cancel or pause it. When YouTube first started auto-playing videos today I thought I had maybe clicked on a playlist. It's still rolling out at the moment and some of you might not be seeing. It's useful no doubt but you might not know it can be disabled because the switch that turns it off comes after an ad. The feature has been available to select users since 2014 when it was in the test phase. Here's how it works and how you can turn it off. Read More

Find What Regional Restrictions Have Been Applied To A YouTube Video

The internet is for everyone unless you live in the wrong part of the world in which case not all of it is for you. Copyright among many other things results in online content being restricted geographically. A very obvious example is Hulu which limits its services to the USA and understandably so. YouTube also allows users to restrict the content they upload to certain geographical areas. Sometimes these restrictions don't make sense especially when you're residing in the United Kingdom and can't see a video uploaded by the BBC. That said, there are plenty of ways to circumvent these YouTube restrictions but before you go looking for a proxy tool, it would help to know which regions a YouTube video is restricted in. YouTube Region Restriction Checker is a simple tool that tells you just that. Read More

How To Set Up Parental Controls On The YouTube Kids App

YouTube Kids has just been released and its purpose is to help parents control what kids watch on YouTube. The content filters come built-in meaning YouTube decides (based on video rating and content) what types of videos are appropriate for young viewers. What it leaves in the hands of the parent is how long a child may use the app, and whether a child can freely search for videos. The settings are secured behind a PIN that will fool kids so long as they can't read numbers. Here's how the parental controls work in the new app. Read More

Create GIF Images With YouTube And Add Text To Them

GIFs are becoming quite popular. Imgur, where the internet's treasure trove of great GIFs resides, rolled out a new format called GIFV to make them play, load, and loop better. In case you were looking for a few great tools to make a good GIF, you can check out our list of GIF making apps. Alternatively, you can wait for YouTube to universally roll out its new GIF maker. The video hosting giant has obviously realised how popular GIFs are. Quite a few apps exist that let you paste a YouTube video's URL and then extract a portion of it as a GIF so it kind of makes sense that YouTube would just add the feature itself. It's still rolling out with one particular video having been identified as having the feature enabled for it. You might have to wait a while before it's available for all videos but here's how the feature works and the video you can test it out on. Read More

Remove A Suggested Channel From YouTube

YouTube is one of my favorite ways to procrastinate. I can't even count how many times I've seen Sainsbury's 2014 Christmas commercial and a lot of times, I saw it as an ad which means it was followed by a video that I watched afterwards. Good times. Now, because I watch so many videos and I have no filter for what I'll click on, YouTube starts thinking I'm interested in the weirdest stuff. It's an algorithm so I can't expect it to understand that my viewing habits are just an average human being lazy but it becomes a problem when my home page is filled with suggested channels that do not interest me. These suggestions aren't all bad and I've found some good channels this way but they are recurring, painfully recurring and when one does not interest me, it's just spam. What's more is that new suggestions won't show up unless these old ones are made to go away. Here's how you can tell YouTube to stop showing you a particular kind of video or remove a channel from the suggested ones altogether. This doesn't require an extension or an add-on so it will work in ANY browser. Read More

3 Ways To Download Subtitles From A YouTube Video

You'd be surprised how useful people find subtitles to be. Many might think subtitles at the bottom of the screen can ruin your movie watching experience but some people genuinely benefit from them. For some it's a better viewing experience, for non-native speakers of a particular language subtitles can serve as a good learning tool, and anyone with a hearing impairment can watch movies without any trouble. If you're watching a DVD or a Blu-Ray, getting subtitles is no problem. A simple Google search will help you find millions of resources for movie subtitles. Now imagine you wanted to download subtitles of an instructional YouTube video and you will find you have far fewer options. Here are three ways to extract subtitles from a YouTube video. Read More

YouTuber Adds Background Playback & Download Options To YouTube App [Jailbreak]

We're going to start this of by saying that music piracy is not okay. It's not, and you shouldn't do it. Moving on, YouTube is so much more than just music videos; it's an amazing place to find tutorials from something as simple as folding a t-shirt to as complex as developing apps. People upload a great variety of content (that is not  copy right protected) and YouTuber is a Cydia tweak available in the ModMyi repository that lets you download YouTube videos in low, medium, or high quality and import them to your camera roll. The tweak can also block ads in the app but if you're benefiting from someone's content on YouTube, you should watch that ad. It can also play YouTube videos in the background  and play high quality videos on 3G and 4G. Read More

Muzeit Is A YouTube Music Player For Chrome With Social Discovery Features

YouTube is by far the most popular video sharing service out there, and a huge chunk of users still use it on their desktops. If you spend a lot of time streaming song videos there, then it seems counter-intuitive having to visit the site every time you want to check out which songs are running popular. We've already seen Streamus for Chrome provide a solution in the form of a music player that allows you to browse, discover and play YouTube music videos without actually visiting the site itself. Currently in beta, Muzeit is a similar Chrome extension with a focus on social sharing and discovery. It lets you search for and discover YouTube song videos, import all your YouTube playlists or create new ones, and share your favorite music with other Muzeit users and your friends over at Facebook. Details to follow. Read More
