There are too many social networks out there, and too little time to keep up with all of them. In all fairness, not everything that appears in your news feed or timeline is worth reading, nor is it all equally important. mybucketz is a web service to bring more organization to your Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr feeds. It lets you create ‘buckets’ of your friends or people you are following on these networks. These buckets then act as groups for reading updates only from the people you’ve added to them. It does take time to create buckets and organize all your contacts into them but once done with this one-time process, your feed reading experience will become much better. At the very least, it will be free of updates from apps, and promoted or sponsored content.
In order to use the service, you have to create a free mybucketz account. The next step is to connect your social media accounts with the service. Click ‘Connections’ and add your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr account. You will have to authorize the app to connect with each account, and it will ask for extensive access in order to show you the updates.
Once you’ve connected your accounts, you can start creating buckets. The process is simple but time consuming; you need to first add a bucket and then add people to it. Type a bucket name and click ‘Add Bucket’. Next, select the account you want to add connections from, using the ‘Select Connections’ dropdown. Your contacts will load automatically, albeit rather slowly. Next, just select a bucket and then click the plus sign next to each contact to add them to that bucket. Repeat it for any other buckets you want to create, and you’re all set.
Once you have your buckets set up, click ‘Feeds’ at the top. You can now select a bucket from ‘Select bucket to dump out’ dropdown and start reading updates from everyone in that bucket.
To post a Facebook status update or a tweet, click the ‘Post to Social Networks’ button, type in an update, select the network(s) you want to post to, and click ‘Post’.
You can interact with the items in your feed as well, like replying to a tweet, commenting on a Facebook update, liking or commenting on an image from Instagram and so on.
While services like Twitter and Facebook offer their own Groups and Lists features respectively to view only the updates from selected contacts together, mybucketz’s biggest advantage is that it allows you to mix feeds from select Twitter and Facebook contacts into one bucket, presenting it all in a decent interface. If there was a way to import your existing Twitter lists or Facebook Groups into the service to begin with, it would have made it much easier to create buckets. Other than that, the service doesn’t leave much to be desired in terms of what it’s meant to do.
