A lot of Windows Phone apps are good enough to hold their own against similar apps belonging to other platforms, but the WP Store lacks official support for several popular services. Recently though, there has been a flurry of WP8 updates to several official apps, with a few services arriving on the platform for the first time as well. LivingSocial is a great service for anyone wishing to find a good shopping deal, specially if you want to travel to new places. The service has been around for quite some time, and has finally arrived on Windows Phone. The new app is pretty good, and takes the location of the user into account before suggesting deals. The deals can be related to anything from products to services and travel, unlike Quixby and Deal Flux that handle only a small number of genres. Users even get to purchase the deals right from within the app if they choose to associate their credit card with LivingSocial.
Existing LivingSocial users can begin using the app by signing in to their account on the welcome screen, and the same area houses the sign up option as well. To register an account for the app, you need to provide your email address and set a new password.
Your current location is the first thing LivingSocial detects, and then presents deals available in your area. To change the location or see deals from other nearby cities, hit the arrow icon located in the top-right corner. The main page of LivingSocial displays the best deals, travel-related offers and a list of upcoming events in the chose city. The ‘Escapes’ section lists deals that are useful for tourists in any given city.
Anyone who is really serious about using LivingSocial can benefit a great deal from it by syncing the service’s voucher wallet with the WP8 app. Thanks to the wallet, you get to make reservations, order products, or save a voucher for later use in your WP8 device. If you come across a really great deal and want to tell your friends about it, the sharing menu has buttons for email, SMS and social media. Before you buy any deal though, it is better to gauge its popularity by going through the ‘purchased’ and ‘savings’ stats.
LivingSocial is a free app, and a must-have for existing users of the service. You can only use the app on Windows Phone 8, leaving Mango users out of luck.
