I agree with Nakadori... get down to 25-30% free disk space and performance suffers.<br>Naysayers shouldn't speak in absolutes

Nakadori,

Hard disk space is not related to performance in any way, unless you happen to be really low under like 2 gigs or something. "But following these simple steps will save more Hard Disk space in your drive where Windows is installed which means faster performance. This also helps in reducing the RAM load which means faster performance." is a completely ridiculous statement. Making extra disk space on the HD with Windows doesn't make it run any faster, only RAM and CPU matter. And the only thing above that could possibly help the RAM is if you uninstalled some old programs that ran themselves automatically on startup and occupied memory. That's it. This list sucks.

For everyone's information. I agree with you all, that this post helps more in freeing disk space rather than increasing performance. But following these simple steps will save more Hard Disk space in your drive where Windows is installed which means faster performance. This also helps in reducing the RAM load which means faster performance.

I agree that it is not directly related to Performance increase, but indirectly.

For my drive maintenance, I simply run CCleaner once a while and for defrag, I've set up Diskeeper to run automatically in the background. No tedious time consuming manual defrags. Drives in pretty good shape.

Let's not confuse system performance and free disk space, shall we?

Disk Cleanup? All it does is delete temporary files, and that frees up disk space but does not improve performance. If anything it degrades performance since programs store their cache there to load faster.

Emptying Recycle Bin? Done by Disk Cleanup, which you've already mentioned.

Clearing IE cache? Done by Disk Cleanup too. Yeah I know, "4 Easy Ways To Increase Your Computer’s Performance When Using Windows" wouldn't have sounded so sexy.

Removing old programs? "Oh gee, I knew I could install programs but I never knew I could remove them, thanks!"

System Restore? Let me just quote you on this one:
Editor’s Note: Don’t do this if you are a beginner in using Windows XP, System Restore is important when it comes to restore your lost settings. Make sure you know what you are doing before turning off System Restore
Keywords: "if you are a beginner", "know what you're doing".
Because non-beginners who know what they're doing haven't heard about stuff like defragmentation and disk cleanup and actually need to read this guide.

The only thing you mentioned that does noticeably improve performance is defragmentation. And then, it's not exactly such an "easy" thing to do since you have to do it regularly and it takes time and resources.

So, rephrasing the title of this guide to reflect its actual content would result in: "1 Way To Increase Your Computer's Performance, And 2 Obvious And 1 Unsafe Ways To Increase Free Disk Space When Using Windows".

Meh. its pretty much just a way to add more hard drive space. Wouldn't technically speed up your compy (cep maybe defrag). I like the delete old programs. should add disable start-up progs.
