Since today or yesterday you can also set up Gmail Offline (enable in Labs) to download ALL your email + attachments (or everything of the last x months/years). Of course it'll be available in your browser alone then, but if you want to have it separate, you can set up a portable Opera/Chrome/Firefox/whatever+Gears just for the mail, which would give you an actual separate Gmail email client. Pro over this Gmail backup? You can actually access your email.
