How To Backup Your Firefox 3 Profile, Settings, Passwords, Extensions And Bookmarks Easily

Firefox users need to create a backup to guard against the possibility that their profile may get corrupted or wiped after installing a new extension or a new version of Firefox. Backing up Firefox manually is as simple as copying their respective profile folders to another location. If you do that, you’ll have a full backup with all your settings and personal data will be saved. Backups come handy when you want to save the profile on multiple computers or want to use the profile in your freshly installed Firefox in your new computer.

Manual Backup

An advantage of manual backup is that you don’t need to have Firefox functioning in order to restore your backup which includes bookmarks, saved passwords and extensions, it’s just a case of copying the backup profiles. The hardest part is finding the profile folders, they are located in different places for different versions of Windows and they may be assigned random file names that make them difficult to recognize.

On Windows Vista machines the locations for your Firefox profiles is:

C:\Users\<User name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<Profile Name>

On Windows XP the location of profiles is:

C:\Documents and Settings\<User name >\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\< Profile name >

Editor’s Note: Where C:\ being the drive where windows is installed. In my case it was C drive, in your case it could be any drive where you have installed Windows. Please also note that the location of profile is given with respect to where firefox is installed by default.

This Profile Folder contains all your preferences and settings, including passwords, bookmarks, extensions, etc. Hence you can copy it and save it somewhere else for later use. If you install Firefox from scratch, you will have to replace the folder in the new Firefox profile.

Backup Using FEBE – Firefox Add-on

FEBE is one of the best way to backup your Firefox profile. Once you install it, you can go to Tools  > FEBE > FEBE Options and there you will find various backup options. You may decide to backup only certain things like cookies or bookmarks or you may backup the entire profile which will include everything including the add-ons. One other very useful feature in FEBE is scheduled backup. You can schedule the backup at a specific time everyday and FEBE does the rest.

Backup Using MozBackup – Windows Software

Mozbackup is another utility which allows you to backup your Firefox preferences. You will first need to download and install it and then like FEBE, it allows you to either backup specific preferences or the entire profile which includes bookmarks, saved passwords and extensions. However it doesn’t have a scheduler like FEBE but it does its job seamlessly !
